Very good condition, softcover. "Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize in History. Wartime commander, tactical innovator, military educator, iconoclastic troublemaker, Pulitzer Prize winner--those categories have only come together in a single military leader in American history. They all accurately describe Admiral William S. Sims (1858-1936), Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in European Waters during World War I. Sims spent nearly an entire career rocking the boat and challenging the conventional wisdom, and yet he ended up in London in one of the most important naval missions in history as the U.S. Navy's commander responsible for coordinating the war with First Sea Lord Admiral Sir John Jellico and the allies."

The AEF Way of War: The American Army and Combat in World War I The AEF Way of War: The American Army and Combat in World War I

The AEF Way of War: The American Army and Combat in World War I

Lot #35 (Sale Order 31 of 46)

Very good condition softcover. This book provides the most comprehensive examination of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) combat doctrine and methods ever published. It shows how AEF combat units actually fought on the Western Front in World War I. It describes how four AEF divisions (the 1st, 2nd, 26th, and 77th) planned and conducted their battles and how they adapted their doctrine, tactics, and other operational methods during the war. General John Pershing and other AEF leaders promulgated an inadequate prewar doctrine, with only minor modification, as the official doctrine of the AEF. Many early American attacks suffered from these unrealistic ideas that retained too much faith in the infantry rifleman on the modern battlefield. However, many AEF divisions adjusted their doctrine and operational methods as they fought, preparing more comprehensive attack plans, employing flexible infantry formations, and maximizing firepower to seize limited objectives.

To Fly and Fight: Memoirs of a Triple Ace

Lot #36 (Sale Order 32 of 46)

Very good condition, hardcover with dust jacket. "The Californian's enduring love of flying began in the 1920s with the planes that flew over his father's farm. In January 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. Later after he received his wings and flew P-39s, he was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the new 357th Fighter Group. Equipped with the new and deadly P-51 Mustang, the group shot down five enemy aircraft for each one it lost while escorting bombers to targets deep inside Germany. But the price was high. Half of its pilots were killed or imprisoned, including some of Bud's closest friends."

Fighting for MacArthur: The Navy and Marine Corps' Desperate Defense of the Philippines

Lot #37 (Sale Order 33 of 46)

Very good condition. "Fighting for MacArthur is the only book that focuses on the role of the Navy and Marine Corps during the 1941-42 defense of the Philippines. The book includes the most detailed account ever published of the Japanese bombing of the Cavite Navy Yard outside Manila on 10 December 1941, the worst destruction ever to US Navy installation. The book also provides many new details about the 4th Marine Regiment that surrendered on Corregidor in May 1942, the only time the Marine Corps lost a regiment in combat. Fighting for MacArthur includes important insights on the origins of the difficult relationship between Army General Douglas MacArthur and the Navy and also compares MacArthur’s actions in the defense of the Philippines to those of Admiral Thomas Hart, the Commander of the Asiatic Fleet."

The CIVIL WAR State by State (2013)

Lot #43 (Sale Order 39 of 46)

Very good condition, hardcover, dust jacket, "Most books and articles about the Civil War cover the subject chronologically and examine the war as one continuous event, but Civil War State by State looks at the war from the perspective of the forty-five states and territories that existed during the period. It looks at the politics of each; the battles fought; the regiments raised; the famous people, soldiers, sailors and very occasional airmen who played their part. Richly illustrated with maps and photographs, this book will provide a fund of knowledge and make a valuable addition to any historian's library."

Illustrated CONFEDERATE Reader (1998) Extraordinary Eyewitness Accounts

Lot #46 (Sale Order 42 of 46)

Very good condition, hardcover with dust jacket, owner sticker on dust jacket. Here is the Southern story of the War Between the States—in the words of the men and women who experienced it. Enhanced with almost 200 period photographs and illustrations—including many never before published—this is a personal, firsthand account of the Southern soldiers and civilians caught in the deadliest, most destructive war ever to be fought in America. From the war's romantic, heady first days, when the men of the South rushed to don the gray, to the final collapse of the Confederacy, when much of the South lay smoldering in grim ruins, The Illustrated Confederate Reader captures the reality and the drama of that terrible, memorable era of American history.
