Civil War Period M1853 British Enfield Percussion Musket-Queen Victoria (V.R.) Lock Mark Lot #62 (Sale Order 67 of 237) Direct from an Afghanistan War U.S. Soldier estate and was found on the battlefields of Afghanistan. This Pattern 1853 musket is in extremely good condition and similar examples have been offered for $1500 and up. The lock plate is dated 1861 and has the Enfield stamping along with the Crown V.R. (Victoria Regina) stamping indicating this musket was British Military issued. Action functions smoothly. The following is a quote from the American Rifleman Magazine pertaining to these M1853 Enfield's: Guns intended for British military service had the “V.R.” lock markings. Rifles produced for private sale often featured crowns, but no regal initials. These latter types would have been the ones that were fielded by both the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War. It is highly doubtful that many, if any, actual British service P’53s saw use in North America (discounting Canada, of course) between 1861 and 1865. As well as being issued to British regulars and colonial troops, huge numbers of Pattern 1853 arms saw widespread use during the American Civil War, China’s Taiping Rebellion and in numerous other affrays around the world. Recently, for instance, a few have been encountered by U.S. servicemen fighting in the Middle East, as British and Khyber Pass-made ’53s were hot items for decades after it had been retired in the United Kingdom.

Early Serial Number Production Civil War Period Spencer Carbine-1st Kentucky Vol. Cavalry? Lot #63 (Sale Order 68 of 237) Rare Civil War Period produced Spencer Cavalry Carbine? Spencer serial numbers up to 5,000 or so were primarily long rifles and not carbines. This excellent example of a Civil war period manufactured Spencer carbine is serial number 5039. There is a known Spencer carbine with serial number 5047 that was issued to Company B, 1st Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry on January 22, 1865 and serial number 5243 was also issued to the 1st Kentucky Vol. cavalry on the same date. Another earlier serial number of a Spencer carbine, 4863, was issued to the New York Volunteer cavalry in September of 1863. The Spencer carbine offered in this auction is well within the serial number range of an issued U.U. Civil War Carbine! Barrel is 22" long and chambered in .52 cal. The barrel has the correct Civil war period production 6 grooves. No front sling swivel on barrel stock as is correct for the early Spencer carbines. Ammo tube in the stock has a strong spring. Based on conditions of a few other examples we have observed, the condition of this Spencer carbine would be considered excellent! Action functions smoothly. AUCTIONEER's NOTE: We have been asked several questions about this example. 1) The barrel measures .817" outside diameter. 2) The side sling plate is inset into stock and screwed on top of the receiver side plate rather than inset into the metal. 3) measuring barrel length with a thin blade tape measure, it measures 22-1/4" while outside measurement is 22"-One knowledgable collector indicated the example could have quite possibly been converted from the Spencer Long Rifle for issue to the cavalry since the carbine production was limited. Please bid based on your own knowledge, expertise and/or research.
