It was a three-month regiment and upon mustering out in Columbus on August 12, 1861, the 21st OVI reorganized at Camp Vance in Findlay, Ohio and re-enlisted for three-years service on Sept. 19, 1861. On Sept. 19 they arrived at the area of Chickamauga Creek and fully engaged in the battle under the command of Lt. Colonel D.M. Stoughton and occupied the area known as Snodgrass Hill. At the end of battle on the 20th of Sept. they had expended all of their ammunition 43,550 rounds total and retired to the rear of the ridge and a runner was sent to locate the ordnance train. In the six hours of fighting, the 21st OVI numbering approximately 540 men, lost 265 killed, wounded or captured. The 21st OVI took part in the Battle of Chattanooga and when the three-year enlistment period expired most of the men re-enlisted for the duration of the war in the Atlanta Campaign under William T. *Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co., "Egyptian Contract" New Model 1859, .52 cal

Lot #24 (Sale Order 25 of 126)

*Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co., "Egyptian Contract" New Model 1859, .52 cal, s/n 39099, BP rifle, brl length 36", very good plus condition, lever action falling block percussion, Very nice example of an "Egyptian Contract" rifle having the 36" barrel with Saber bayonet lug. In late 1859 with the help of J.H. Adams Jr. of Washington, D.C. the Viceroy of Egypt placed an order for 600 Sharps Model 1859 rifle-muskets. The serial numbers for these rifles are in the 3600 to 4000 range. Sharps had multiple problems during this time period from inferior and limited supplies to a steam boiler failure and the need for new equipment to bore the 36" barrels, but by February of 1861 all the rifles were completed and inspected by US Government Inspectors. By April of 1861 payment for the contract rifles still had not been received so Palmer offered the rifles to the U.S. Ordnance Department. On April 17th J.R. Hawley of Hartford, Connecticut a Captain of Rifle Company A went to the Sharps factory and purchased 90 rifles for his company and later that same week the remaining 510 rifles were purchased by the State of Connecticut and issued to the 1st, 2nd and 4th Infantry Regiments. The walnut full length stock with straight grip butt stock shows only the slightest amount of very light handling throughout with the most noticeable a small loss just behind center barrel band left side top and under frame right side. All patent markings on receiver frame are very crisp with an "H" sub inspection mark right side of lever lock. The case hardened components have a light and dark grey/brown mottled patina throughout with a few scattered tool marks on bolster edges. The bore has shine with very nice rifling and the barrel has a thinning blued finish with some scattered tool marks mostly noticeable around barrel bands. A fixed front sight with folding adjustable rear graduated to 8 with the barrel being marked "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO/HARTFORD CONN" forward of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1859" rearward of it. The sight base has the Lawrence patent on the base. The butt plate and patchbox are case hardened both showing traces of coloring with some tool marks present on butt plate and some light freckling in a few areas on box. Standard Sharps sling swivels mounted bottom of middle barrel band as well as inletted in bottom of butt stock. Very nice example of an "Egyptian Contract" Sharps 1859 rifle. Extremely Rare Smith & Wesson, Model 1940 MK II Light Rifle, 9mm,

Lot #91 (Sale Order 94 of 126)

Extremely Rare Smith & Wesson, Model 1940 MK II Light Rifle, 9mm, s/n 2112, carbine, brl length 10", excellent plus condition, semi auto, Wonderful High Condition example of a very rare Smith & Wesson. In 1939 the British government contracted Smith & Wesson to design a pistol caliber carbine and the Mark I was born but failed in trials testing at the Royal Small Arms Factory so Smith & Wesson modified the Mark 1 by strengthening the receiver with an external fluted sleeve serving as the safety. The light rifle proved unsuccessful and the British government canceled their contract. There are believed to be less than 80 examples of the Mark II in current circulation with most having a warning label applied to the left side of the Tenite butt stock, thankfully this example escaped that procedure. It is believed that serial numbers ended at approximately 2200 with this example being one of the last produced. The barrel is fully fluted with longitudinal lines and the forward grip served two purposes, one for dispensing of spent cases downward and the other to house the 20 round detachable box magazine. The steel butt plate is serrated bearing the serial number at the top, the serial number is also located on the underside of the receiver at the wrist area along with the "MK2" designation. The left side of the frame is marked with the Smith & Wesson trademark logo. The left side of the receiver has a two line address "SMITH & WESSON/SPRINGFIELD, MASS. U.S.A." and the right side bears three patent numbers in two lines. The rear sight is adjustable for elevation and the front is a fixed blade. The rifle comes with an original period leather sling, one magazine and green Leatherette bound Handbook of the Smith & Wesson Semi-A-tomatic Light Rifle Caliber- 9mm Model of 1940. 1940 shows only the slightest of handling wear and the bore appears as new. Wonderful example of a S&W MK2 Light Rifle. Proxibid does not provide high resolution photos. Please email us at info@zettauction.com with lot numbers for any high resolution photos you would like. U.S. Rock Island Arsenal, Mock Up Ramrod Bayonet 1903, .30-03

Lot #97 (Sale Order 100 of 126)

U.S. Rock Island Arsenal, Mock Up Ramrod Bayonet 1903, .30-03, s/n 1965, rifle, brl length 24", very good condition, bolt action, For the collector who has almost every 1903 variation manufactured the rarest of all to find is the Ramrod Bayonet. With what is believed to be less than 80 examples still in existence and not have ever had a chance to buy an original example the owner of this rifle states it was his perfect place holder. The rifle has the correct retractable rod bayonet with stud and push button release along with the correct two hole front sight base containing a blade front sight. A Krag style tangent rear sight. The one piece handguard has a loss on the left side from the rear barrel band back to the receiver and a 1904 dated cartouche in a borderline box left side above the trigger. The steel butt plate is smooth and has a trapdoor for a cleaning kit. The underside of the wrist is marked with a "54/circle P: and is a walnut straight grip with finger groove forend. The bore shines and the steel butt plate shows some freckling with remaining blued metal surfaces showing only very light handling throughout. The walnut stock and handguard shows some light scattered indentations and handling wear along with the loss. This is a mock up rifle using correct parts but that being said would make a very nice addition to the collection that has everything but a ramrod bayonet.
