Springfield 1855 Pistol Carbine Springfield 1855 Pistol Carbine

Springfield 1855 Pistol Carbine

Lot #107 (Sale Order 107 of 144)

Springfield Armory U.S. model 1855 Maynard Tape Primed Pistol Carbine. This is one of approximately 4000 produced using the same Maynard priming system and 58 caliber ammunition as the 1855 musket. Instead of directly priming the nipple by hand for each shot, the user would install a roll of paper percussion caps. A single cap would be exposed, sheared and carried by the hammer to detonate on the nipple. Standard rifle percussion caps could also be used. This system was abandoned at the beginning of the Civil War. This was used as a pistol but when fitted with the rare shoulder stock, which is included, it could be used as a carbine. The lock plate is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” and the Maynard system's door is engraved with the Federal Eagle. The butt plate on the removable stock is marked “US”. The left side of the barrel is marked “V”, “P” with an eagle head and dated “1855”. The condition shows use with some spots of pitting on the barrel, around the nipple and on the lock plate to the extent that only a portion of "SPRINGFIELD" is legible. The pistol grip has a surface crack on either side but is solid. There is also a crack at the forend that looks to be an old repair. The detachable stock is in nice condition with some light surface handling marks. Overall a nice excellent example of a scarce and desirable U.S. Pistol Carbine with the rare Maynard tape device worthy of any Springfield collection. Antique.

Sharps & Hankins 1859 Navy Carbine

Lot #117 (Sale Order 117 of 144)

Sharps & Hankins 1859 single shot, breech loading Navy Carbine. This Sharps and Hankins .52 caliber rim fire rifle, patented in 1859 and with a leather wrapped barrel, was used by the Navy. When the trigger guard is pulled down the barrel moves forward in the frame to open the chamber for loading. This was one of the first breechloaders to use self-contained metal cartridges. This example appears to be complete with the original leather barrel cover. The action has turned a grey-brown patina. The action functions and locks as expected. The left side of receiver is marked "SHARPS PATENT 1859". The right side is marked "SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA". The stock is in nice condition with a few scattered scuffs and small dings from use. An interesting piece of Naval firearms history that is seldom seen. Antique.

Springfield 1855 Maynard Primer Rifle Springfield 1855 Maynard Primer Rifle

Springfield 1855 Maynard Primer Rifle

Lot #118 (Sale Order 118 of 144)

Springfield Armory US Model 1855 Maynard Tape Primed Rifle-Musket, manufactured in 1859 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Model 1855 was the first US musket to utilize the .58 caliber Minie ball. This example is outfitted with the short-lived Maynard tape priming system, to which Springfield had purchased the rights. Instead of directly priming the nipple by hand for each shot, the user would simply install a roll of paper percussion caps, and a single cap would be exposed, sheared and carried by the hammer to detonate on the nipple. Standard rifle percussion caps could also be used. This system was abandoned at the beginning of the Civil War and introduction of the Model 1861. This rifle features iron furniture, the lock plate is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1859” and the Maynard system’s door is engraved with the Federal Eagle. The butt plate is marked “US”, the barrel bands are marked "U" and the left side of the barrel is marked “V”, “P” with an eagle head and dated “1857”. Included is a period and "US" marked bayonet. The overall condition is very nice with a strong action bright bore and distinct rifling. The lock plate lettering and eagle are nice and crisp. The stock is in very nice condition with some scattered marks from handling. Overall and excellent example of a scarce and handsome U.S. musket with the rare Maynard tape device worthy of any Springfield collection. Antique.

U.S. Springfield M1795 Flintlock Musket U.S. Springfield M1795 Flintlock Musket

U.S. Springfield M1795 Flintlock Musket

Lot #119 (Sale Order 119 of 144)

Based on the 1763 Charleville musket which were imported from France and used during the Revolutionary War, the Model 1795 was the first musket to be produced in the United States. These were manufactured by Springfield, Harper's Ferry and Eli Whitney. The Model 1795 was used in the War of 1812. It was replaced by the Springfield 1812 and 1816 models. The "U.S." marked barrel and bands have turned a dark almost black color. The lock plate, showing darker near the pan, still distinctly reads "U.S. / Eagle / SPRINGFIELD" and the rear of the plate is clearly marked "1809". The top of the butt plate appears to be marked "1810". The action functions as expected. The screw holding the cock although looking original, is short and not secure. The stock is in very nice condition with no cracks but the typical wear just behind the pan. Overall a very nice and collectible piece of American history. Antique.
