21" French musical automaton "Little Girl Playing with Kitten" by Leopold Lambert. $6000/7000

Seated upon a wooden chair behind a carved maple wood table is a bisque-head girl with flat-cut neck socket, blue eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, carton torso containing mechanism, carton legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, antique costume, holding a little bisque doll in one hand, and a ball on string in the other. A little kitten is balanced on a metal rod at the edge of the table. When wound, she nods and turns her head, dangling the ball over the kitten and lifting the doll up and down as though showing the kitten to the doll. The kitten swings back and forth as though trying to catch the ball. Music plays. Marks: L.B. (key). K*R Simon & Halbig 117 (doll). Excellent condition, music and mechanism function well, costume excellent albeit quite dusty. Leopold Lambert, the automaton was created about 1895, although the doll head is circa 1915; the head has flat cut neck socket specific to automata. A rare and delightful automaton.
