Busy Bee Open Works Cylinder Phonograph

The Busy Bee Graphophone was manufactured by Columbia and marketed by Chicago's O'Neill James Company. Overall condition good. Bed plate retains 75+% of original paint and pinstriping with some chipping to the corners. Good original decal. Original cast aluminum winding key. Missing reproducer. Machine winds up and runs. Comes with repainted 10" black horn. It is like Columbia's Type Q Graphophone except that the mandrel is slightly larger diameter and it has a Busy Bee decal on the base. Columbia Grand Cabinet

Exceedingly rare Columbia Grand Graphophone cabinet. Which has been heavily modified as a bathroom vanity. It originally a held a Columbia Grand Concert Cylinder Phonograph. The phonograph is long gone. The pull down cylinder top is missing. The top has been cut open to fit a bathroom sink. All 8 drawer fronts are present with original locks and shell pulls. The top 2 drawers are currently locked in place and it is assumed that the drawers are missing. The 2nd 2 drawers have been shortened to 6"d. The bottom 4 drawers still retain their original 18"d. If you don't have one in your collection, all the bones are there for restoration. Measures 45.5"t x 32.5"w x 24.5"d.

It comes with a record and two paper picture rolls, record has some wear, but it does play Record and picture rolls are extremely difficult to find in any condition! Titles on the record are "Mickey Mouse in Winning the Derby" and "Mickey Mouse in Mickey's Pal Pluto". Matching paper picture rolls are in good condition. Machine comes with the power cord and bulb. This machine is in untouched original condition with its original brown oak finish, lightly alligatored throughout. What make this machine unique is the fact that both the top cover and lower cabinet are adorned with unusual Federal style decals in addition to the large standard Columbia decal . Upon close examination the transfers appear to have been placed on the cabinet when new, or at the time of manufacture. The transfers are under the old lightly alligatored original finish .Several experts speculate that this was most likely a "one off" custom decorated cabinet for a special exhibition or show, possibly The 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair. Certain Columbia machines exist today either in photographs or in the flesh, which are not standard catalog machines. The serial number is consistent with this theory. The upper mechanism has its original black paint and multi colored transfers, with some chipping, see photos. The upper mechanism is die cast and is slightly bowed, however the upper mechanism, carriage, transport, queuing mech, and tracking are original and move freely and in working order. Has original #7 aluminum reproducer with good stylus, has clean original nickel plated bedplate and ID tag in good condition. Has original slotted cast iron winding crank. Machine winds, runs and plays. Also included is an original 7" diameter, 14" long original aluminum Columbia horn. Purchased in the late 1980's from Kane County Flea Market . The following items were acquired by Larry Donley as part of the Clarence Ferguson Collection. Clarence Ferguson was the last authorized Edison Dealer in the U.S. According to Mr. Ferguson’s recorded interview with Leo Kimmett in September 1968, Ferguson started working at the Edison Company in 1907. How Mr. Ferguson acquired these items is unknown. In the interview he stated that when the Phonograph Plant closed down in New Jersey, everything was hauled out to the ‘meadows’ and dumped. This included record molds, equipment and parts. It is assumed that they were acquired by Mr. Ferguson at this time. Rather than piece out the items individually, Larry has decided to keep them as he had acquired them, as one lot. Tripling the standard group pitch to 450 TPI these records could play up to 40 minutes of music, 20 minutes each side. The records were plagued with problems such as skipping and groove wall breakdown. Only 14 different Edison LP Discs were issued before they were discontinued. This particular disc is #30003. It is in near mint original condition. There is no original sleeve for this record. Comes with an Edison Diamond Disc Record Catalog, a catalog on the Edison LP Phonograph, and other literature totaling 6 in number. This particular record was on display in the Larry Donley Phonograph Collection, Union IL and previously from the Clarence Ferguson Collection, Merrill WI.

1912 Teddy Roosevelt Election Song

Seymour sung to the tune of "John Brown's Body, The hand drawn cover artwork depicts Teddy Roosevelt giving a speech in the top left corner,bottom right corner has a cylinder phonograph with a horn and the voice of the people coming out of the horn, published by Progressive Pub Co. from East St.Louis IL, Back cover has a letter from Roosevelt of thanks to Miss Seymour for sending him a copy and also a cartoon at the bottom showing Taft and Roosevelt in the ring together. Roosevelt ran as a progressive beating Republican Taft in the primary, but would lose to Woodrow Wilson in the general election. This lot includes personal correspondence of Clarence Ferguson and includes a letter from Thomas A Edison Inc dated Feb 12, 1942 telling Mr Ferguson that they no longer carry the parts that he needs and reporting on the heath of an Edison employee that Mr. Ferguson had inquired about, and closing that they hoped to see Mr Ferguson again some time in Orange, including original envelope. A typed letter from Ethel M. Harlan, in Orange, NJ, from 1938. Mrs Harlan was the widow of cylinder recording artist. Byron Harlan. In the letter, Ms Harlan thanks Mr. Ferguson for the offer to send cylinder records of her husband saying that she has none and that she would be able to play them on the phonograph that Mr. Edison gave them as a wedding gift in 1904, in original envelope. A hand written letter dated April 9, 1946, from Harry Hunting in Yonkers, NY, stating that he is the son of Russell Hunting and that his father was the original (Michael Casey) and would be willing to purchase any records that he had, in original envelope. A typed letter from the Bishop And Babcock Company, Cleveland, OH from 1928 to Mr Ferguson stating that they no longer manufactured records, in original envelope. A hand written note stamped April 24, 1929, showing that Clarence Ferguson purchased a second hand Gem phonograph for $1, from Babson Brothers. Aeolian Sheridan Art Case Phonograph

Aeolian Sheridan World's Largest Phonograph, the president of the Aeolian Company had a mansion in Sarasota FL. It is told this machine came from Aeolian Hall which was the 3rd floor of the Aeolian Factory in New York. The third story had an 1100 seat theater and this was in the foyer until it was moved to his private residence in Sarasota FL. In 1924 George Gershwin played Rhapsody Blues for the first time with Paul Whiteman’s orchestra at Aeolian Hall. It is the world’s largest phonograph. This phonograph is in unrestored condition. All 10 original record albums are present which show heavy signs of wear. However, they are custom made for this machine and impossible to find if missing. There are 5 brown 10" Vocalion records, 1 black 10" Vocalion record and 1 Pathe record found amongst the albums, probably left from the original owner. Cabinet is in as-found condition with some scratches and flaws. The inlays on the cabinet are outstanding with no chips, missing parts or veneer separation. Comes with two extra reproducers (3 total) which were used for different tones and volume. There is actually a volume cord on the left corner that extends approximately 4' from the machine. This is a fabulous candidate for a total restoration!

Very primitive x-ray viewing devices dating from the late 1800s / early 1900s. Developed by Clarence Dally who worked for Thomas Edison. The early days of radiation were not understood and over a period of years Dally lost both of his arms and eventually died of cancer because of his prolonged exposure to radiation. Thomas Edison himself nearly lost his eyesight during these experiments. Edison gave up these experiments in the early 1900's. RARE Edison Dual Manhattan Coin Op Phonograph, in incredible condition for its age and rarity, came from the Walter Bellm Collection in Florida. The Manhattan Phonograph Company produced the machine in 1901-1902 based on the earliest "Standard" mechanism, the dual machine is in a single oak cabinet which simplified the retrieval of the coins, has Queen Anne legs that are not metal but wood, the metal supports on the legs can be clearly seen in a 1969 offering by Hathaway & Bowers. This was when Walt Bellm acquired this exceptional machine. Both cranks present but believed to be old replacements, dual porcelain signs in very good condition, no chips. This is a RARE opportunity to own this machine as there are only 3 known to exist!

Berliner Front Mount Ratchet Wind Phonograph

Ratchet Wind Front Mount Berliner Phonograph, this scarce phonograph has all original parts including reproducer (believed to be of the Clark Johnson type), horn and older replacement leather elbow. Original wooden tone arm has all of its original hardware. Nickel plating on ratchet is only at 75% showing some wear and rust. Cabinet has its original golden oak finish. Decal on back of machine 15% remains, original felt on turntable is present but needs to be replaced. There is an unusual metal trim/shim underneath the front mount. Also, one tiny screw hole on top right side of cabinet. Since the original break mechanism is present on the left side, no idea why there is a screw hole on the right side. No record hold down. Has original all black 15" horn with 9-3/4" cone shaped bell. Original black paint with gold pinstripes. Has numerous dents and dings on large end of bell, as well as a few on the body. A good and honest example of a hard to find machine! See photos.

The Concert Grand features a double comb mechanism with no chipped or broken teeth. It plays an 18.5" disc (compatible with Mira). Box winds and plays well. The mascot for Victor Talking Machine company. The dog is named Nipper and is thought to have been painted while on his owner’s coffin listening to his voice on the phonograph. There are two different styles. The first one is two ceramic salt and pepper shakers while the other is an older ceramic figure. The older one is from the 1940’s and has worn paint but the color is still visible. The other two are salt and pepper shakers with the cork still in the bottom. Shakers have been well kept. Polyphon Coin Operated Concerto I Orchestrion

Made by the Polyphon Musikwerke in Germany. It was imported by Regina Music Box Company in 1903 and sold at the Polyphone Concerto to hotel and tavern suppliers. Spring motor drives a 32" steel disc which plays a piano, two drums and one cymbal. It is coin operated. Two piece cabinet with original finish measures 112.5" tall including an 11" removable gallery, 45" wide and 24" deep. Lower cabinet has pull out door for disc storage. Disc included. There are only a few of these boxes known in the United States and this is perfect for the advanced collector. Plays well but hasn't been tuned for 40 years. Swiss Railway Station Coin-Op Automaton Music Box

Henri Vidoudez An outstanding example of the Swiss railway station music box genre; used to entertain children and adults alike in the waiting rooms while they idled the time between trains. They were used to entertain children (and adults too) in the waiting rooms. Historically, these coin-op machines were owned by their creator (in this case Henri Vidoudez) and leased to the Swiss Railway System in a revenue-sharing arrangement. They were maintained by Vidoudez throughout their service life. This piece dates to 1895. The casework is in exceptional condition, measuring 23” wide x 14” deep x 29” tall. There is an outside crank for winding and a electrical cord for the lighting only (with a 220 adapter to use here in America). The coin slot is located on the upper right side, and just below it on the bottom is the “secret” drawer where the money is collected. The 10-tune music box was restored in recent years at the renowned Baud Museum in St. Croix, Switzerland, to the highest of standards. The casework was done nearby by Monsieur Margot of L’Auberson. The drum and bell accompaniment, as well as the three dancing dolls, make this a wonderful presentation! Drop a penny in the slot, the light comes on, and the dolls start dancing to the music, and everyone watching will be all smiles! A true musical treasure, and one that will become a family heirloom!

Columbia Regina Grafonola Phonograph/Music Box

This magnificent machine with its impressive carvings, has its original brown mahogany finish which is lightly alligatored throughout. Overall above average condition. The vast majority of these machines were produced as a style 240 Reginaphone, however this example is marked "Colombia Grafonola Deluxe". Experts speculate that from that group, approximately 500 were produced as "Colombia Grafonola Deluxe." This unique convertible mechanism allows the user to play either disc phonograph records or a 15.5" Regina disc music box. Both the phonograph and music box mechanisms are in good working order. The 15.5" double comb short bed plate Regina mechanism is in excellent untouched original condition and also has a Zither attachment. This is among the finest sounding we have ever heard. It has its original 12" cast iron accessory turntable with its original felt. The tone arm and reproducer have their original nickel plating which is lightly oxidized. It has its original swing out waste needle cup mounted below the needle block. It has its original winding crank with safety clutch. The glide away tone modulating doors open and close smoothly over the internal horn which also houses a small trap door which is to be opened while the music box is playing. The lower storage compartment houses its eight original record storage boxes with their original paper dividers and knobs. The above consists of 4 10" and 4 12". The storage compartment also has provisions for storage of the 15.5" metal music box discs. As is appropriate with this machine, the 12 original, copper-plated 15.5" music box discs are the original complement to this style and are included. These discs bear no Regina markings as appropriate for a Colombia machine. Has its original cabinet key. The four legs and skirts are nicely intact and tight. This machine was purchased from the estate of the original owners in the mid 1980s in Riverside, Illinois. The machine had been in its original location in the parlor since its purchase and has only been moved twice and is being sold by the second owner. You never find them in such an exceptional condition with its complete complement of original accessories and in outstanding condition. ~50" x 23" x 23" From the Roger Merenkov Collection.

Bacigalupi 46-Note Wooden Pipe Keyboard Organ

Bacigalupi 46-Note Wooden Pipe Keyboard Organ, circa 1958, was utilized to lay down the soundtrack for the baby elephant bathing scene in the 1962 John Wayne movie, Hatari. Built by the great Luis Bacigalupi, in the West Coast Organ Company, El Monte, CA. Luis Bacigalupi was considered one of the greatest organ builders in the world. He came to American in 1904. He built this organ with his son in the late 1930's and early 1940's. He built this organ for himself but rented it to people in Hollywood and others in his area. You would call him and he would deliver and pick up the organ. Luis was the inventor of the cardboard and roll operated organs. This organ has had stories written about it by the NBSI magazine on at least 2 different occasions as well as by smaller publications. The organ has been in 30-40 and B movies in Hollywood. Henri Mancini was credited as the greatest composer of his time and played this organ in the majority of these movies. He played the tune "Elephant Walk", which was written for Hatari, during the scene where the animals gather at the watering hole. After Luis's death in 1958, the organ was left to his son, Luis Jr. Only a few years later, Luis's health failed. Then he sold it to J. Ward. Mr. Ward created Bullwinkle and was also considered the greatest cartoonist of his time. Mr. Ward played this organ on TV many times on the Howdy Doody and Kukla, Fran and Ollie shows. You cannot find an organ today built with so much craftsmanship with so much history as this great organ. Truly a museum piece that should be shared with everyone. Having the greatest organ builder, the greatest music composer and the greatest cartoonist all a part of one organ. This organ has been in a private collection on the east coast, owned by Dennis Windsor, who's show was mostly history but included his famous monkey, Joey, for the kids. Entertainment for children young and old. Dennis purchased this organ from Mrs. Ward after Mr. Wards death. It was then sent to The Great Canadian Nickelodeon Company where it underwent a total restoration.

Cail-o-phone Coin Op Cylinder Phonograph

Among the rarest coin op cylinder phonographs, the Cail-o-phone was a very limited production. Manufactured by the Caille Bros. of Detroit, MI in 1907. Features a single selection cylinder phonograph mechanism. Powered by 110 volt electric motor activated by dropping a penny in the coin slot. This machine is as complete and original as you could ever hope for, with the exception of the marquee and the listening tube. The mechanism is virtually untouched, including the original coin slot, coin vault key, even the original coin box is inside the vault. Quarter sawn paneled oak case in original finish, beveled glass cover. Cabinet mounted on fancy iron legs. Decal on the front of the mechanism bedplate in very good original condition. These machines seldom show up for sale, don't miss your opportunity to have one of the nicest machines of its kind in existence. Measures46" tall without marquee, 23" wide, 16.5" deep. Marquee measures 26.5" tall.
