Marks: 0. Comments: Sonneberg, circa 1880, the doll closely resembles the Bru bebe known as "circle-dot" whose market the doll attempted to capture. Value Points: most endearing doll with wonderfully expressive features, especially rare in this tiny size.

Very Rare German Pull-Toy Cow in Swiss Festival Costume 1600/2200

15" (38 cm.) l. Standing upon a wooden base with cast iron spoked wheels is a brown and white hide-covered cow with large brown glass eyes, horns, carved hooves and nose, and hide tail. The cow has original leather collar with brass bell, and is decorated with a bead-trimmed needlework collar accented with colorful braided ribbon streamers, and with a brass coronet with colorful wreath of flowers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, mid-1800s. The Alpine regions of Switzerland, Germany and Austria traditionally celebrated Spring with the annual "ascent to the mountains" during which herds of cows and their shepherds single-filed the narrow mountain passes to reach the freshest grasses at the mountain peaks, where they feasted until August. At that time, they returned, single-file again, down the narrow passes to the villages below. The return to the villages ("descent from the mountains", known as "Almabtrieb" in Austria and "Alpabfahrten" in Switzerland) was celebrated by merry festivals. The shepherds dressed in colorful traditional folklore costumes, and the greatest milk-producing cow was bedecked with flowers and a crown. Historical accounts have poetically described the event as "cow bells across the meadows". Value Points: very rare early toy with wonderful detail and historical background.

The store is lavishly filled with apothecary contents including a matched set of milk glass labeled jars which line the top shelf, dozens of glass bottles with intriguing herbal cures, and various labeled tin and cardboard containers, as well as scales, mortar and pestle, ladder, two skulls and a skeleton. A porcelain head man in blue uniform stands in attendance. The shop has original Apotheke name at the center top of back wall. Excellent condition. Germany, mid-1800s.

Unique French Postal Train Car with Original Provenance 1800/2500

13" (33 cm.) w. x 13"h. x 11"d. A wooden-framed railway car is finished with tinted straw in decorative manner to create wall murals, carpets, inlay furnishings, and walls in the interior, and slatted boards and window frames on the exterior. When opened, the interior room has built-in furnishings including table, reclining sofa with pillows, desk and work table with lamp and telephone, and a carpet is attached to the floor. The exterior has cast iron wheels, lamps, and other railway car apparatus. Very good/excellent condition. Included is an early ink script note describing the car which (translated) reads "Postal Wagon [made] in tinted straw, made by J. Gardon, retired courier of Paris mail, made in Saint Maur-les-Fosses, May 25, 1915" with J. Gardon signature. The French postal service historically used train cars known as post wagons, mostly integrated into passenger trains with sleeping and resting areas as well as office space. This unique and wonderfully-imaginative piece, with maker's provenance, was one man's celebration of his earlier working history.

Bisque socket head with very plump cheeks, brown glass inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes, rose-blushed eyeshadow, brushstroked brows, closed mouth modeled as though open with row of painted teeth, outlined lips, pierced ears, auburn hand-tied human hair wig, Sonneberg composition and wooden fully-jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 12 (head) E.G. (on torso). Comments: Ernst Grossman, the Sonneberg sculptor and doll maker, registered the first German design for "ball joints moving in every direction" (GM 82) and "doll able to make several movements by means of rubber strings" (GM88) in 1880. The body was inspired by the newly popular French bebe, as was this facial model, resembling Bru's "circle/dot" bebe. Condition: generally excellent, original finish, light scuffing on torso. Comments: created in 1948 by Priscilla Bushnell, the former partner of Dewees Cochran. Of the same material and in the same style as the Cochran dolls, its production resulted in a lawsuit between the two feuding artists. The story is related in the forthcoming book, Dewees Cochran, The Artist and Her Dolls by Ann Leis. A light wood box with paper lithographed cover opens to form into the floor and frame of a late-19th century dining room, with folding heavy stock walls having original patterned burgundy wallpaper and gilt paper edging and with two windows at the back wall with original burgundy satin draperies and lace linings. The room is furnished with dark wooden dining room table with six chairs, cupboard, dessert buffet, and jardiniere filled with flowers, the chairs with leather seats and all furnishings with gilt paper edging. There is a fireplace with burgundy satin trim and the room is accented with two large ormolu mirrors, ormolu mantel clock, pewter tea set and more. Three dollhouse dolls are included. Excellent condition. The folding box rooms were presented in Paris by Badeuille and his successor from the mid-1800s until 1897 of which this example is circa 1890s, and are very to find complete.

A heavy card stock box with vividly colorful lithograph on the lid depicting an audience clapping at circus performances is labeled "Circus Spearino", and opens to a bountiful collection of circus performers, animals and props, and includes planked wooden flooring (for insertion of figures to allow standing), and various tables, benches and chairs. The figures are each hinged at arm and leg joints to allow variation of poses, and each has well-detailed costume. The interior lid of the box has illustrated suggestions for posing (much in the manner of early Schoenhut circus ads), and was likely designed as a competition to the American wooden circus toy.
