*Star Note* 2003A Richmond FRN Green Seal Grades Choice AU/BU Slider. When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes.

These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. The legend states that Silver had been deposited in the Treasury and was payable on demand to the note’s bearer.

As with most $20 bills the series of 1934C twenty dollar bill has a picture of Andrew Jackson on the front and The White House on the back of it. All series of 1934C $20 bills were printed in Washington DC. Series of 1934C $20 bills with a green seal are called Federal Reserve Notes. 1874 10c Fractional Currency, 5th Issue, Short Key Grades vf++. FR# 1266. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number. William Meredith is pictured on the front.

1922 $10 Gold Certificate, Sigs Speelman/White Grades vf++. It is hard to believe that large size ten dollar gold certificates were only issued in 1907 and 1922. The United States first printed gold certificates in the early 1860s. For some reason they never printed the ten dollar denomination until 1907. It was of course also the last large size ten dollar gold certificate printed. Hillegas was the first treasurer of The United States. Perhaps if Hillegas had died in a duel then he would be better remembered today. The nickname for a 1922 $10 bill is called a Hillegas note in reference to the portrait of Michael Hillegas who appears on the front of both 1907 and 1922 bills. Some new collectors reference the “sunburst” on the reverse of these notes. However, that certainly isn’t an accepted nickname.

The 1839 Liberty half eagles were the first of a denomination that would continue for nearly 70 years, although the design is actually quite different from the issues of 1840 and later, making it technically a one-year subtype. Most known survivors from the mintage of 118,000 coins are well-circulated, and Mint State examples are rare. The yellow-gold surfaces on this specimen offer rich, frosty luster and ebullient eye appeal. A few of the obverse stars around the periphery are incompletely struck up, but the central details are boldly impressed. Scattered light abrasions account for the grade, and a couple of small dark flecks appear on the reverse, which also shows some strike incompleteness on the dentilation. Despite such minor quibbles, this is a nonetheless lovely and elusive conditional rarity. PCGS Estimates that only 200 Survive in all grades and a mere 12 examples survive in mint state, with non grading higher than ms64. Tied for 10th Finest known. It is a rare MPD (misplaced Digit) rarity with a separate line in the Red book. To quote Ron Guth of PCGS “A Misplaced Date (MPD) occurs when the die sinker accidentally places the date way out of position. This is different from a repunched date, where a slight misalignment occurs between one or more punches of the date logotype. A Misplaced Date often occurs when the date logotype is dropped accidentally onto the die. In the case of the 1847 Half Eagle, the one listed in the GUIDEBOOK, is known as FS-301 (formerly FS-303). On the FS-301, the top of a 7 can be seen nestled in the denticles below the final 4 and 7 of the date. As of September 2011, PCGS had certified ten examples of the 1847/7 MPD (FS-301), the finest of which is a single PCGS MS-63 This example is the 4th finest known. One ms65 and 1 ms64 at NGC and one ms63 at both NGC and PCGS. I believe that ours is actually 3rd finest as I believe both the ms64 & ms65 at NGC are resubmits. According to Jaime Hernandez from PCGS, ‘The 1877 Indian Cent is unquestionably the most desirable coin in the entire circulation strike Indian Cent series. It is the second lowest mintage coin in the series, and only the 1909-S Indian cent has a lower mintage. Despite the 1877 Indian cent having the second lowest mintage in the series, it also survives in much smaller numbers than the 1909-S Indian cent. This is mainly due to the lack of coins being collected in 1877 compared to 1909. There is only one reverse die confirmed as striking all existing 1877 Indian cents. However, if there was only one reverse die employed to strike all (877,000)1877 Indian cents, then this lone die should have sustained major planchet flaws when striking such a large mintage. Surprisingly, this is not the case since 1877 cents show no traces of a damaged die. Therefore, it is strongly believed that the mintage of 877,000 coins struck, is actually a highly inflated figure. The 1887-S is a lower mintage (1,771000 pieces) issue for its type and was not represented to an appreciable extent in the Treasury Department silver dollar releases of 1962 to 1964. Quantities were available from government storage in earlier decades, but by the late 1950s the scarcity of this issue was already recognized. The LaVere Redfield hoard, dispersed in 1976, contained five to 10 bags, of which the vast majority of Uncirculated coins were in lower grades through MS-64 by today's standards. National Currency, issued 1915-34, are banknotes that are legal tender in the United States, together with United States Notes, silver certificates, Gold Certificates, National Bank Notes and Federal Reserve Notes. They had the same value as other kinds of notes of similar face value. Federal Reserve Bank Notes differ from Federal Reserve Notes in that they are backed by one of the twelve Federal Reserve Banks, rather than by all collectively. 1928 $1 Red Seal United States Note Grades f+. 1928 is the only year for which you can find a small size one dollar bill that has a red seal. The red seal denotes that the dollar bill is a legal tender note, also called a United States Note. 1928 one dollar red seal notes are very popular. The story of the 1928 is a strange one, in that it doesn’t make any chronological sense. All 1928 red seal dollar bills say series of 1928 on them. However, they were actually not printed until 1933. To make things even odder, 1928 one dollar red seals didn’t get released for circulation until late 1948. When they were finally released into circulation, Puerto Rico was chosen as the location of distribution. The collectability of the 1928 one dollar red seal does relate to the fact that it is a one year design and the note is very distinctive. All of these notes were printed in Washington DC and they are all signed by WO Woods as the treasurer of the united states and WH Woodin as secretary of the treasury. The back of all 1928 one dollar red seals feature the funnyback design. In addition to George Washington and a red seal, each 1928 one dollar legal tender note also says, “This note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private except duties on imports and interest on the public debt”. “United States Note – The United States of America – Washington – Will Pay To The Bearer On Demand One Dollar”

By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes. The note itself is a Silver Certificate. Silver Certificates were redeemable in Silver. One of their most distinctive qualities is the blue Treasury seal and serial numbers. These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. The legend states that Silver had been deposited in the Treasury and was payable on demand to the note’s bearer.

It Holds the Lone Spot at 2nd Finest Known behind the Elisburg Example. And in my opinion, it is superior to that legendary pedigree. I have included a picture of the lone ms63 as well as two ms62 examples for your comparison, Variety 4-F. The only variety of the year. Struck from strongly clashed and lapped dies, as on all known examples. The diagnostic die scratch on the reverse past the second A in AMERICA is plainly visible. This is one of the best struck 1852-D gold dollars known. In spite of the fact that the dies had severely clashed, the details seen in the center of both obverse and reverse are extremely sharp, with full, individually defined curls on the head of Liberty, complete radial lines on the stars, and a sharp date.. The surfaces show no readily distinguishable abrasions, just a host of clash marks and roughness in the die as made. There are multiple clash marks in the left obverse field, but this coin appears to have been struck from a reasonably early die state. The luster is frosty and far above average for the issue. Most 1852-D gold dollars are worn to the point that little natural luster remains, and the higher grade examples that exist usually have a dull, grainy texture. On this piece, there are splashes of intense orange-gold color in center of the obverse and around the stars; the reverse shows deeper and somewhat more even color that is a bit darker in hue near the 1 in the denomination. The 1852-D has about 100 pieces known, with perhaps seven to nine of these grading Uncirculated. Nearly all of these survivors are in the MS60 to MS61 range A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

Remarkable condition rarity for a 20th century United States Mint overdate that is elusive even in circulated grades. Softly frosted in texture, the surfaces are colorfully toned with a lovely appearance. Overall smooth in hand with an acceptable quality of strike for this challenging variety, the all important 7 under digit is plainly evident even without the aid of a loupe. As the only overdate and, indeed, major variety in the Standing Liberty quarter series of 1916 to 1930, the popularity of the 1918/7-S with specialists knows no bounds. The end of the First World War and the immediate post-War era saw a great need for circulating coinage in the booming economy of the United States. To supply enough working dies to all of the operational mints, the engraving department at the Philadelphia Mint undoubtedly went through periods of time when it was simultaneously producing dies for multiple years' production. One of those time periods was the end of 1917, when dies for both 1917- and 1918-dated coinage were being prepared. Researcher J.H. Cline presents this variety as a conventional repunched date, but more recent scholarship suggests that is most likely a product of a hub error. One obverse die for the Standing Liberty quarter received its first impression from a 1917-dated hub, but its second either purposely or inadvertently from a 1918-dated hub, creating the 1918/7 overdate. An S mintmark was applied and the die was shipped to the West Coast for use at the San Francisco Mint, where it struck an unknown, although presumably limited number of the 11,072,000 quarters struck in that facility during 1918. (The origins of another classic 20th century overdate -- the 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel -- are identical in both time and cause.)The 1918/7-S remained unknown to the numismatic community until 1937, the overdate making its first appearance in the Standard Catalog in 1942. The intervening 19 years between this overdates production and its numismatic discovery were sufficient to see the wear, if not loss, of most examples through circulation. MS-70 (PCGS).Examples of this type have been referred to as Mint errors in the past, and they are now listed as having been struck from unfinished proof dies. The W mintmark is important in making this distinction as, while the coins do not display a full cameo proof finish as one would expect for a proof Gold Eagle, the West Point Mint struck only proof Gold Eagles prior to 2006. It is likely that the dies were not completely polished and otherwise prepared for proof coinage but were accidentally used for this role by employees at the West Point Mint.There is another theory that could explain the existence of these curious 1999-W Quarter-Ounce Gold Eagles. Late 1999 witnessed a surge in demand for small-size Gold Eagles of the Tenth-Ounce and Quarter-Ounce "denominations" as the public was caught up in the Y2K fear. Since it was late in the year and the Mint no longer had access to dies for producing commercial strikes, a few previously used proof dies were pressed into service to deliver more commercial strikes. A comparison between mintages figures for the commercial strike Tenth-Ounce and Quarter-Ounce Gold Eagles dated 1998-2000 illustrate the strong demand that the Mint witnessed for these coins in 1999. No large quantities of the date were present in the Treasury releases of the early 1960s.Among condition rarities, the 1901 is one of the leaders in the Morgan dollar series, being scarce in all Mint State grades and downright rare finer than MS63. 1863 5c Fractional Currency, 3rd Issue, Green back Grades Select CU. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people started hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number. In the 3rd issue, all of the notes higher than three cents are all signed by banking officers. These were the first notes from the fractional series to include officer signatures. All third series notes were printed between December 5, 1864 and August 16, 1869. This is the only series to be used during and after the Civil War.

1907 Woodchopper $5 Lg size Legal Tender Note Grades f+. Although series of 1907 is written on the bill; Some bills were printed as late as 1927 and 1928. You can tell approximately when it was printed based on the signature combinations used by the signing treasury officials. The series of 1907 $5 bill was the last note of that denomination that Andrew Jackson was featured on. He later made an appearance on the ten dollar bill before being switched to the twenty dollar bill in 1928. The nickname for the 1907 $5 bill is the wood chopper. The note has the portrait of Andrew Jackson on the left hand side. The central image is that of a pioneer family moving west. A husband and wife are pictured with their young baby. There is also a hound dog in the frame. The man is holding an ax. This note has a red overprint. The treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in red ink. There is also a red V printed on the left hand side of the bill in red ink. As you can probably guess, that red V signifies the value as a Roman numeral.

1928A $1 Blue Seal Silver Certificate Grades xf+. 1928 $1 silver certificates do come in several different blocks. The most common block is the AA block, the IA, JA, KA, and LA blocks also exist, and these are scarcer. The lowest serial number notes were presented to important officials in Washington DC. These were given out in sheets of 12. There are still some uncut sheets that exist. All 1928 one dollar silver certificate notes feature a portrait of George Washington at center and a blue seal on the left hand side of the note. All 1928 $1 silver certificates are known as “funnybacks.” They get this name from their distinctive back design.
