1890s LEADVILLE CO. PJ COONEY FIRE HOSE CARRIAGE Lot #250a (Sale Order 257 of 674) We are pleased to offer this original 1890s Fire Hose Reel Carriage made by PJ Cooney and used in Leadville Colorado. This rare and wonderful Hose Reel was made by the PJ Cooney Company in the 1890s. They we located 900-902 Cass Ave. St Louis, Missouri. They were a manufactuer of Hose Carriages, Ladder Wagons, plus other Wagons and other Fire Related items. This wagon apperas to be manufatured after 1893 when the company incorporated under the name PJ Cooney. This can be assumed by that name being cast into the hose reel. The company was well reguared as one of the premier manufatuers of Fire Equipment during that time period. Its products were used by Fire Departments throughout the United States. This carriage was purchased and used by the Leadville, Colorado Fire Department. It was named Hose #2. Leadville, Colorado was a very prosperous Gold and Silver mining town. Abe Lee first struck gold there in 1860. Then in in the 1870s Silver was found. In 1877 the town was official known as Leadville after the lead carbonite which bore its fortunes. 1000s flocked to Leadville to strike it rich thru mining, liquor, gambling, and entrupernership. Some struck it rich but most did not as was the typical story of the minig boom of the time. The town has a very interesting and historic past as documented in several books. As Leadville grew the need for infrustructure was needed. Like most towns of that period Fire was a major concern. First volenteer fire groups were formed and as time went on the things got more oranized and the city hired a Fire Chief to handle the operations. So in the 1890s the Leadville must have felt the need for a new Fire Hose Reel Carriage and purchased this amazing piece of history. This rare carriage is a 4 wheel horse drawn version. Its almost all original and in period paint. The name CC Whitney Leadville, Co. is painted on the wagon and we assume this was the company that originally painted the details and town name in the carriage. The paint is beautiful condition well preserved, and very stable. Its a rich maroon with gold highlights. The wood and metal hose reel has the makers name PJ Cooney Builder St Louis Mo. embossed in it. The wagon has a pair of nozzels 1 stamped WD Allen Co. Chicago the other stamped The Akron Brass Mfg Co. The wagon comes with period brass lanterns. There are still 3 period original fire axes present along with a tool box. There are two fire alarm bells mounted on the front of the carriage. The carriage has a reupholstered seat with basket under it. This carriage is very well bulit with leaf spring suspension and brakes. There are very nice brass accents throughout. The carriage mreasures 144" Long by 61" Wide. The metal wrapped wood spoke wheels measure 55" rear and 45" front. The hose reel measures 52" tall by 37" wide and still has a hose coiled on it. We have some research and several copies of period pictures showing the carriage in Leadville. Plus two books about the History of Leadville that feature pictures of the carriage. This wonderful Fire Hose Carriage is possibly the finest piece of early American Fire History ever found. The originality is truly amazing. Plus the unique provenance surrounding this carriage make it a true piece of history!
