When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes. The note itself is a Silver Certificate. Silver Certificates were redeemable in Silver. One of their most distinctive qualities is the blue Treasury seal and serial numbers. These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. Up for Auction is a Consignment I have been talking about for the last few months, and I have finally secured. I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. I have put 3 in each of the Independence auctions. We estimate the rolls to be worth $500-$700 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

As is with xf details, I would put it at 7th to 8th finest. Variety Equivalents: Maris 9, Frossard 5.3, Doughty 29, Hays 13, Chapman 44. It is the Obverse 26: 7 Leans Right. The 7 leans sharply to the right on this obverse, and its tail nearly touches a border dentil. There is wide spacing between the top three hair locks. This obverse is found on S-54, S-55, and S-56. The Reverse is Reverse Y: A in STATES High, Leans Left. Sometimes called the Office Boy reverse, for the rather amateurish appearance of the reverse. The letters TED are each successively higher, the A in STATES is high, leans left, and too close to the first T, the M in AMERICA leans to the right, and that entire word is poorly spaced. If Robert Scot engraved this die, he must have exceeded his daily rum allotment. This reverse is found only on S-55. It is the Die State II: Both dies have been polished to remove the clash marks that appeared in earlier die states, although remnants of a clash mark remain at the upper junction of the hair and cap.

Our delightful Near Gem 1920-S half dollar has smooth, lustrous, satiny surfaces. The striking quality is, as said, impressive with both sides exhibiting above average detail that includes emerging definition to Liberty's head and left hand on the obverse and nearly full delineation between the eagle's breast feathers on the reverse. After producing only 1,552,000 half dollars in 1919, the San Francisco Mint increased its output for this denomination to 4,624,000 coins in 1920. The 1920-S is among the more challenging Walking Liberty half dollars to locate in Mint State, especially with the combination of Near Gem surface preservation and superior striking quality offered here. In terms of total number of Uncirculated coins extant, in fact, the 1920-S ranks 10th in rarity among the 65 circulation strike issues of this type. This is one of the finest certified examples that we have handled in recent memory, would be an excellent choice for an advanced collection. - Note I have used FULL Size Pictures of the Obverse and Reverse and the Slab for Pictures 4-6 of the example I am comparing this to. A simply outstanding Premium Gem Morgan dollar from every standpoint. The luster is bold with lively cartwheel activity and a stunning Rainbow Toned Obverse. The strike is sharp for the date and essentially complete, and the satiny surfaces approach pristine quality from the first glance to the last. There are many hundreds of MS-66 examples of this date to choose from in the numismatic marketplace, but there the otherwise common nature of the date ceases to be. In MS-67, as here, the issue becomes rare. Of the 21 examples at NGC, only one other piece has been awarded a star for eye appeal, making this example even more desirable. It is difficult to imagine a much finer 1901-O Morgan dollar though PCGS has certified a lone MS-68 example. That MS-68 no doubt resides in an extremely advanced and permanent Morgan dollar collection, and has not been seen since its sale in the Legend auction of 2015 for $55,813. That aside, the present piece could easily represent the finest example of the date you are apt to find in today's marketplace, and savvy bidders will react accordingly. Note the Last Non Star ms67 to sell at auction sold for $10,200 in 2020. And the two before that in 2019 for $15,275 and $16,800. None of which had the Star Designation. One of the Finest Known. One may think that the Reverse of the Two Continents of The Western Hemisphere but upon closer examination you will see that they are two women bent into the general shapes of the two continents. When examining a Monroe Commemorative the cheeks of the two statesmen on the obverse and the figures that represent the two continents on the reverse are the highpoints and will show wear first. The 1923-S Monroe commemorative half dollar was sponsored by the California film industry, ostensibly to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine. The obverse design by artist Chester Beach features the conjoined heads of Presidents James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. The reverse was a James Earle Fraser copy of an 1899-dated medal by Ralph Beck, showing the continents of North and South America in the shape of female figures. The coins were offered at one dollar each, but sales were slow. A large distribution of 274,077 examples was eventually achieved, but many of the coins were simply released into circulation at face value.Unfortunately, the Monroe half dollar was not a well-produced issue, and virtually all examples seen are weakly struck. This spectacular Superb Gem exhibits a better-than-average strike and virtually flawless surfaces that show highlights of sea-green, lavender-gray, and violet toning at the peripheries. When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes. The note itself is a Silver Certificate. Silver Certificates were redeemable in Silver. One of their most distinctive qualities is the blue Treasury seal and serial numbers. These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. The legend states that Silver had been deposited in the Treasury and was payable on demand to the note’s bearer.

Up for Auction is a Consignment I have been talking about for the last few months, and I have finally secured. I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. I have put 3 in each of the Independence auctions. We estimate the rolls to be worth $500-$700 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

At 82,304 pieces the mintage of the 1878 three-dollar gold piece is misleading as Most of the 1878 three-dollar gold pieces that remained in the Mint were eventually melted. As some backstory. In 1875, the federal government mandated that, beginning on January 1, 1879, gold coins would once again be exchangeable at par with paper currency. This would return gold coinage to active commerce in the eastern part of the United States for the first time since banks suspended gold specie payments in December 1861, due to the uncertain economic climate brought about by the onset of the Civil War. In anticipation of this event, the Mint increased gold coin production in 1878 to build up its stocks of such pieces. The market also anticipated the date the mandate was due to take effect, and on December 17, 1878, gold achieved parity with paper on its own. However, the contemporary public showed little interest in exchanging paper currency for gold and, even if they had, it is unlikely that many people would have requested three-dollar gold pieces. The denomination was unpopular almost from the time of authorization in the mid 1850s, and with supplies of 1878 coins quickly accumulating at the Mint and in bank reserves, yearly mintages fell off sharply again beginning in 1879 and continuing through the series' end in 1889. Up for Auction is a terrific 1810/09 Classic Head Cent, S-281, xf40. The example at hand has a pleasing even brown color, minimal contact marks for the grade, and is struck slightly off center. It is the Breen Die State III. Produced for only seven years from 1808 through 1814, the Classic Head large cent design is the work of German-born engraver John Reich. Known for years among numismatists as the Turban Head cent (based on the name popularized by Edouard Frossard in his 1879 monograph), the more familiar Classic Head name used today actually predates Frossard's description and is attributed to Ebenezer Locke Mason, Jr. in 1868. The latter name was basically reintroduced to the numismatic community in the 1950s by Walter Breen, who theorizes that Reich's inspiration for Liberty's portrait probably came from one or more statues of boy athletes from Ancient Greece. The fillet inscribed LIBERTY on the portrait was worn as a prize for winners of city-wide athletic competitions, hence Breen's conclusion. In the absence of documentary evidence explaining why, the author further speculates that objection to the use of a boy athlete as a model for Liberty from one or more contemporary observers may have prompted Chief Engraver Robert Scot to replace his assistant Reich's design after only seven years of production. Regardless of the exact circumstances of its design and replacement, the Classic Head series is one of the shortest among early coppers from the U.S. Mint. The paucity of examples produced does not alone explain why this is also one of the most challenging types to locate in finer circulated and Mint State grades. Planchet stock for this series, all of which was supplied by Matthew Boulton of Birmingham, England, is inferior to that which the Mint used to produce other large cent types. The copper used for the Classic Head coinage is softer with more metallic impurities, which made the finished coins more susceptible to wear, environmental damage and unattractive toning. Indeed, the vast majority of survivors of all dates of this type are well worn and/or impaired. This 1810/09 has survived well better than the vas majority of the others. It is also worth noting that it has never been determined if the underlying date is either an 09 or an 08. And last you will notice from the closeup that not only is the 2nd one stamped over a former 0, but it was also stamped over a partial 1 which can be seen protruding from the top of the 1. Good luck acquiring this terrific and scarce overdate. PCGS estimates 1500 survive in all grades. This example is tied for 33rd finest. The Morgan dollars of 1921 are a historical accident, produced 17 years after the previous last-of-their-kind only because the Peace dollar was not ready. Production values were poor, and for the San Francisco issue, there are only 26 Proof like coins (including one Deep Proof like) in the combined certified population, with this MS65 example tied at the top of the heap. While contrast is minimal, the reflectivity of the fields is patently obvious. One of the most satisfying 1921-dated Morgan dollars in existence. Noted numismatic scholar Wayne Miller stated that the 1921-S Morgan Dollar is, "...by far the worst of any Morgan Dollar in terms of appearance. Most are a weak mushy strike." In his book Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia, Q. David Bowers also states: "Semi-proof like 1921-S Dollars are occasionally seen, but with far less frequency than their Denver or Philadelphia counterparts. Full proof like pieces are great rarities; possibly fewer than a dozen pieces exist." The conclusions of these two authors should be enough to explain the rarity and desirability of this near-Gem specimen. Uniformly reflective throughout, the surfaces display sharp delineation that softens slightly on Liberty's hair and eagle's breast. As befits the proof like finish, die striations are prevalent in the obverse and reverse fields. Collectors who specialize in Proof like Morgans would be wise to take full advantage of the opportunity that we offer here. The coin at Hand is Graded ms64 by PCGS. I think this coin is a superb Reference coin and I encourage everyone to try and own it. The Coin is Incredibly weakly struck with no detail in the hair above the ear and ZERO Breast feathers. It also has severe Lines on the Obverse made by coin counting machines, Likely in the Redfield Hoard acquisition. You will Note that neither the Coin Counting Marks or the Strike effects the PCGS Grade. Additionally, the coin is most certainly PL, but the did not assign it a PL Grade. I find this PCGS coin very useful in understanding PCGS Grading possibilities and tolerances.

Highlight of the Entire Auction. Up for Auction is a Numismatic Rarity. An Uncirculated 1815-p Capped Bust Quarter. Only 12 Uncirculated Examples have Survived from 1815. The example at hand is tied for 3rd Finest Known! Per Ron Guth of PCGS “Quiet times prevailed at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia in 1815, where only Quarter Dollars, Half Dollars, and Half Eagles were made that year. Mintages dropped precipitously on all three denominations, but especially on the Half Eagle. The Mint produced only 47,150 Half Dollars in 1815, a far cry from the million-plus mintages of previous and subsequent years. This makes the 1815 Half Dollar a standout among the Capped Bust Half Dollars - a rarity that is desired in all grades.What makes the 1815 Half Dollar even more interesting is that all are overdates, with the 5 of the date punched over a 2. Though only a portion of the underlying 2 is visible, it can be seen even on worn examples.” It is useful to explore the reason that 1815 saw such a low mintage of half dollars. The "War of 1812," was punctuated by an invasion by British forces in mid-1814 and the torching of the White House. The uncertainties of war led to the hoarding of gold and silver. For most of 1815 the Mint lacked gold or silver bullion deposits from which to strike coins. The war with the British officially ended with the U.S. Senate's ratification of the Treaty of Ghent on February 16, 1815. By year's end the flow of gold and silver resumed in a limited way. The Mint once again began to strike half dollars. The entire delivery of 47,150 half dollars bearing an 1815 date was made January 10, 1816 -- one day before a fire at the Mint destroyed the rolling and drawing mills, as well as the melting room, halting gold and silver coinage again until 1817. Up for Auction is a Consignment I have been talking about for the last few months, and I have finally secured. I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. I have put 3 in each of the Independence auctions. We estimate the rolls to be worth $500-$700 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Well struck for the issue and essentially untouched. The Denver Mint was the sole facility to produce the Buffalo nickel in its final year. While the nation dipped back into recession in these years, demand for the coins eased off and many 1938-D Buffalo nickels sat in Treasury vaults. Collectors would have to wait until stocks of earlier coins were sufficiently depleted to warrant introduction into circulation. Many fresh rolls of coins were stashed away by speculators and numismatists, making this issue one of the most readily available of all the Buffalo nickels in Mint State. The 2015 US Marshals Service Silver Dollar was one of three coins issued to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the nation’s first federal law enforcement agency. The designs for the coin focused on the legendary status of the United States Marshals in America’s cultural landscape. The obverse design of the coin features an image of the US Marshals Service Star with the silhouette of US Marshals riding horses across the lower portion. The inscriptions include “Liberty”, the anniversary dates “1789-2014”, the motto “In God We Trust”, and the date of issue “2015”. The obverse was designed by Richard Masters and engraved by Charles Vickers. On the reverse is a depiction of a frontier U.S. Marshal leaning against a post and holding a “wanted” poster. This image is intended to represent Marshals as the lawmen of the frontiers, playing an important role in their geographic, political, and cultural history. An inscription above the image includes the words of the Marshals Service motto “Justice, Integrity, Service”. Additional inscriptions include “E Pluribus Unum”, “United States of America”, and the denomination “$1”. The reverse was designed by Frank Morris and engraved by Joseph Menna.

On November 3, 1975, Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon announced the reissuance of the $2 note as a cost-saving measure; the new $2 notes would be available from banks on April 13, 1976, Thomas Jefferson's birthday.[28] Series 1976 and onward $2 bills were partially redesigned and reissued as a Federal Reserve Note. The note retains the same portrait of Jefferson, and the basic design of the obverse remains unchanged since 1928. The treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in green ink, replacing the red used on the previous United States Note. Since the reintroduction of the note coincided with the United States Bicentennial, it was decided to use a bicentennial-themed design on the reverse. The bill was not issued specifically to celebrate the bicenntenial, as is widely assumed. An engraved rendition (not an exact reproduction) of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence replaced Monticello on the reverse. Beginning with Series 1995, all $2 notes have been produced at the Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. An issue of Series 2003A $2 bills was printed from July to September 2006 for all twelve Federal Reserve Banks.

One of their most distinctive qualities is the blue Treasury seal and serial numbers. These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. The legend states that Silver had been deposited in the Treasury and was payable on demand to the note’s bearer. This note has a tear on the top right side.
