Sale Highlight! Large 3 13/16 Sale Highlight! Large 3 13/16

Sale Highlight! Large 3 13/16" Paleo Cougar Mountain - Jasper with excellent flaking. 2 COA's.

Lot #174 (Sale Order 177 of 366)

Sale Highlight! Large 3 13/16" Paleo Cougar Mountain made from Jasper with excellent flaking. This is a beautiful example of a very rare Great Basin – Columbia River Plateau area point. Cougar Mountains are related to Haskett points and are considered to be the knife form of the Haskett. Cougar Mountain and Haskett points are contemporaneous with Clovis in the West. In obsidian hydration testing conducted by Great Basin Associates and performed by Sonoma State University, a majority of the Haskett – Cougar Mountain points predated Clovis examples from the same areas and the Great Basin. The dates for Cougar Mountain – Haskett range from 12,100-10,500 BP. This point was found on the Ray Simmons field in 1960 near Pasco Washington by Shirley Twehus. Shirley was a member of the mid Columbia Archaeological Society. The Ben Stermer COA which accompanies this point states "this is a fine example of this type, exhibiting excellent workmanship". This is a rare opportunity to own an exceptional Paleo point from the Columbia River. Ex. Richard Lang, Gordon Erspamer collections. Stermer and Jackson COA's.

Historic Elbow Pipe, 3 13/16 Historic Elbow Pipe, 3 13/16

Historic Elbow Pipe, 3 13/16". Decorated Steatite pipe bowl with patinated wooden stem.

Lot #302 (Sale Order 309 of 366)

Historic Elbow Pipe, 3 13/16". Decorated Steatite pipe bowl with patinated wooden stem from Yakima, WA. From the Ernest Cowles collection. Cowles' inventory number, 'K-42', is marked on the bottom of the bowl. Ernie was a member of the O.A.S. and was profiled in "Who's Who in Indian Relics", Vol. 3, 1972. Described in Ernie Cowles collection notes, the entry for 'K-42' reads: "Small L-shaped Pipe with wooden stem that belonged to Chief Saluskin of the Yakimas. Bill Gannon bought the Chief's beadwork and other belongings and gave me the pipe." Bill Gannon was an early Native American Art dealer in the eastern Washington territory. An interesting feature of the pipe is the linen thread wrapped around the stem where it inserts into the bowl to help tighten the fit. A copy of the Cowles Collection notes with the K-42 information is included.
