Mid-19th Century English Pedestal Table with Arrangement of Miniature Decorative Objects 700/900 Lot #3 (Sale Order 3 of 319) 5" (13 cm.) Arranged upon a walnut pedestal tripod table are a myriad of miniature ormolu accessories including vase, candle holder, inkwell, candy dish on pedestal, journal holder, and inkwell with attached scale. Along with metal banquet lamp, desk globe and table-top screen with walnut frame and ormolu trim (originally designed as a dance card), circa 1890. The table is signed on the underside "J. Bubb Maker"; the English miniature furniture maker in the Georgian style produced doll-sized tables, cabinets and chest of drawers in his South London workshop from 1808-1835.

Comments: from her series of art character dolls presented by Marion Kaulitz Munich art studio; the dolls were shown in a 1909 edition of the magazine International Studio, and featured in important exhibitions in Munich and Berlin in that year, designed to represent real "children of the street". Firmly-stuffed rooster in red, green, gold, and burgundy felt feathers has embroidered detail on tail feathers, black bead eyes, and felt covered metal feet allowing the rooster to stand freely. With original blank metal button on feather. The felt rooster line was popular in the Steiff offerings, made from 1900 until the 1920s and was described by Marianne and Jurgen Cieslik in their book Button In Ear as "a burst of glorious color". Bisque socket head with slender angular features depicting an adult lady, aquiline slender nose, painted smoke blue eyes with heavily modeled lids and well-sculpted eye sockets, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with solemn expression, shaded lips, brunette mohair wig, composition and wooden fully-jointed lady body with defined bosom, tiny waist and accentuated derriere, antique royal blue silk dress, undergarments, bonnet and leather shoes. Marks: Simon & Halbig S&H 152 7 (head) Heinrich Handwerck Germany (body). Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1910, the doll was inspired by Rosa Luxemburg (1870-1919), the Polish-born German intellectual and social reformer whose short life was spent advocating the rights of the common man and woman, and who was considered a heroine in her time. The portrait doll was likely presented at the 1910 Leipzig Spring Fair in the important display of suffragette dolls which highlighted the event. Since it was not created for child play purposes, it is certain that very few examples of the doll were ever created and it is very rare. Value Points: the rarity is rivaled by compelling modeling including deeply defined eyes, strong chin and aquiline nose, enhanced by choicest bisque and painting, original wig, body, body finish, and original costume.

Early and Very Fine Bone and Mosaic Inlay Sewing Box 900/1400 Lot #44 (Sale Order 44 of 319) 17" (43 cm.) l. x 11" x 6". The solid wooden large sewing box is elaborately decorated on the lid sides and interior of bone and intricately-designed mosaics, and has a blue velvet lid lining and lock and key. When the lid is lifted, the sewing box is revealed with elaborately-constructed niches and boxes, also with inlay, and along with a number of carved bone tools including unusual barrel-shaped spools with turning knobs on the lids, richly-carved case, and green silk-covered pincushion. A single dove-tailed drawer at the base pulls open to reveal a blue velvet hinged work surface, more cubicles, an unusual open-carved flat box, and a carved bone pair of scissors, along with early playing cards. Excellent condition. Early 1800s.

Standing upon velvet covered base is a bisque-head lady with refined portrait face, blue glass eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes and brows, aquiline nose, closed mouth with shaded lips, pierced ears, dark brunette mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, paper mache hands, original Spanish festival dress of gold silk with black lace overskirt, soutache braid, red silk bows and gold jewelry. When wound, music plays and she sways her body (from the waist) back and forth, turns her head, and alternately lifts her left hand, and then her right hand which she twists back and forth at her wrist, thus shaking the tambourine which she holds. Bisque shoulderhead with perfectly oval face and elongated throat with defined throat, cobalt blue enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, arched brows, accented nostrils of aquiline-shaped nose, closed mouth with suggestion of smile, unpierced ears, original carton torso and legs, with hand-stitched original kid arms having fingers stitched to hold objects. The lady is standing upon a wooden platform with three cast brass wheels. When wound, music plays and the lady glides forward and in circles, while alternately lifting each arm to peer through her lorgnette or to fan herself. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: F. Depose G. (front shoulderplate). Comments; attributed to Roullet, circa 1867, with original commissioned portrait head from the porcelain firm of Gaultier. German Pull-Toy Mohair "Record Bunny" by Steiff 600/900 Lot #89 (Sale Order 89 of 319) 9" (23 cm.) Balanced on a red wooden-wheeled base with iron chassis is a cream mohair bunny with large amber eyes, long floppy ears, hinged arms and legs. When the toy is pulled along, the bunny appears to "pump" the ride as he tilts his body forward and back. Excellent condition, bellows intact for sound effect is not working. Germany, Steiff, from their line of "record" toys, Germany, Steiff, the style of toy was made in wide variation of animals from 1912 until the 1950s. French Globe de Mariee with Bride and Historical Ephemera 600/900 Lot #201 (Sale Order 201 of 319) 16" x 12" (41 x 31 cm). A red velvet covered basket with gilded filigree trim and curved handle encloses a rose silk tufted cushion. The handle is decorated with a garland of hand-pressed bisque flowers and silk leaves, and resting upon the cushion is the bride's wax orange blossom coronet and decoration for gown. There is a bisque lady doll with antique costume and miniature spray of wax orange blossoms posed on the cushion, and there are three medallions attached to the front, one is a small cross and rosette of Lorraine recaptured by France in WWI, and the other two are beautiful gilded or bronzed medallions depicting a mother and child created as benefit for 1914 war orphans. The presentation is on wooden ebony-finished base with blown glass dome. French, circa 1915.

Elaborate and Whimsical Carved Wooden Gazebo as Sewing Cabinet 400/600 Lot #251 (Sale Order 250 of 319) 16" (41 cm.) Designed to appear as a garden gazebo, of fine woods with natural and ebony finish, and having domed roof and cupola, the sewing case has bone pillars which are actually thread winders, attached pin-cushion to the tower wall, hollow tower which accesses by unscrewing the domed top, and a cupola which unscrews for access to another hidden compartment. There is a bone finial at the very peak and graduated shelved base for placement of other accessories such as thimbles. Excellent condition. When wound, music plays, she turns her head side to side and alternately lifts powder puff and mirror in a synchronic manner. French 19th Century Globe de Mariee with Lavish Ormolu Designs 800/1000 Lot #307 (Sale Order 304 of 319) 21" (53 cm.) Arranged upon an ebony base under a blown glass dome is a gilt ormolu arrangement framing a burgundy velvet cushion upon which rests the wax floral decorations of a bride. The ormolu decorations include love bird, grape leaves, sheaths of wheat, and margeurites, each with symbolic meaning, as well as three framed mirrors and eighteen porcelain hand-painted flowers. Excellent condition. French, circa 1885. The globe de mariee was chosen by a young couple before their marriage with particular attention to choosing symbolic elements that would provide good omens for their life together; the tradition was prevalent throughout the 1800s and lasting until the 1920s in France.
