Lot #259a (Sale Order 265 of 581) Simply massive! 21" long by 9" tall fossilized Cave Bear skull found in Siberia. Some restoration to a few areas around the jaw. This is a hard to find fossil and would make a great display for any relic room! The cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) was a species of bear that lived in Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene and became extinct about 24,000 years ago. The cave bear had a very broad, domed skull with a steep forehead. Its stout body had long thighs, massive shins and in-turning feet, making it similar in skeletal structure to the brown bear. Cave bears stood almost 12’ tall, and the average weight for a male Cave Bear was 770 to 1,320 lbs., though some specimens found were estimated to weigh as much as 2,200 lbs. They were kept in the Indiana collection for quite some time, until they were donated to a Museum in Wisconsin. The Museum never displayed the Cache. In the early 1960s, the Blades and a number of other artifacts were sold to a collector in Michigan where they stayed until 1974. At that time, they were sold to a prominent Ohio collector who retained them until October 1976, when they were purchased by the Relic Room, and then sold individually. These Blades are considered one of the greatest archaeological finds in Ohio's history.
