Series 1976 $2 Green Seal Dallas Green Seal Federal Reserve Note (FRN) Grades xf+ Lot #27 (Sale Order 20 of 516) Series 1976 $2 Green Seal Dallas Green Seal Federal Reserve Note (FRN) Grades xf+. On November 3, 1975, Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon announced the reissuance of the $2 note as a cost-saving measure; the new $2 notes would be available from banks on April 13, 1976, Thomas Jefferson's birthday.[28] Series 1976 and onward $2 bills were partially redesigned and reissued as a Federal Reserve Note. The note retains the same portrait of Jefferson, and the basic design of the obverse remains unchanged since 1928. The treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in green ink, replacing the red used on the previous United States Note. Since the reintroduction of the note coincided with the United States Bicentennial, it was decided to use a bicentennial-themed design on the reverse. The bill was not issued specifically to celebrate the bicenntenial, as is widely assumed. An engraved rendition (not an exact reproduction) of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence replaced Monticello on the reverse. Beginning with Series 1995, all $2 notes have been produced at the Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. An issue of Series 2003A $2 bills was printed from July to September 2006 for all twelve Federal Reserve Banks.

Hard Times tokens are privately issued mostly copper large cent sized tokens that were produced from 1833 to 1844. The period of economic hardship during Van Buren's presidency (the Panic of 1837) came to be known as the "Hard Times". With America in a deep recession, people began hoarding coins as a safeguard, and small change disappeared from the marketplace. In response, merchants began buying tokens from private mints so they could make change in business transactions. They were made of copper with a reverse similar to legal U.S. cents. This example is an ideological token without a head. The ‘executive experiment’ was Van Buren’s sub-treasury idea using a fiscal agent. The tortoise carrying the safe meant the democrats could never get the Bill through congress. On the reverse is a line from Van Buren’s inaugural speech when he said, “I follow in the steps of my illustrious predecessor.” Contemporary cartoons showed Van Buren behind a Jackass stepping in its hoofprints. A rare piece of American history, and a true prize for collectors. HT-32

Up for Auction is a Consignment I have been talking about for the last few months, and I have finally secured. I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. I have put 3 in each of the Independence auctions. We estimate the rolls to be worth $700-$900 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

This is for a series 1934A $20 Dollar Hawaii Federal Reserve Note San Francisco. Signatures Julian-Morgenthau. It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Everybody in Hawaii was sitting on pins and needles. Were the Japanese preparing a massive invasion of the islands? If they did invade, they could use the millions of dollars in currency on the islands to buy war material. To thwart this, these $20 Federal Reserve Notes were sent to the islands. Each has a large HAWAII printed on the reverse. If the Japanese did invade, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "Hawaii" Notes were destroyed. The 27-p is the big sleeper of numismatics in my opinion. It has the 2nd lowest mintage in the whole Peace dollar series. Lower than the 34-s, the 21-p, yet it does not command its proper value. Good coin to own multiple of and save, in my opinion, but if you've been coming to our auctions for a while you will have seen that this has always been my opinion. This is a beautiful premium near-Gem that would do justice to the any Peace dollar collection. Sharply struck from the rims to the centers, both sides also sport full mint luster in a lively satin to softly frosted finish. Brilliant throughout with much to offer the advanced Peace dollar enthusiast. After only the 1928, the 1927 has the lowest mintage of any circulation strike issue in this series. Just 848,000 coins were struck, and Mint State survivors are scarce by the standards of the type. Roger Burdette in his Guide Book of Peace Dollars (2008) writes: "The 1927 issue is the rarest Philadelphia-minted coin in Uncirculated condition, although the 1928 is often given this honor because of its very low total mintage. Exceptional vivid multicolored toning is seen on both sides of this lovely coin. Shades of blue, red, gold and pink provide outstanding visual appeal. Here is a frosty, sharply struck and expertly preserved Superb Gem that would do justice to the finest type set or Liberty Seated dime collection. One of the provisions of the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 -- often called the "Crime of '73" -- was to increase the weight of the dime, quarter, and half dollar by a minuscule amount to bring them closer to the Latin Monetary Union in Europe. For the dime, this meant that the weight increased from 2.49 grams to 2.50 grams, an almost negligible change that would last until the cessation of circulating silver coins in 1964. The new coins were introduced later in 1873 and as in 1853, arrows were placed on either side of the date to indicate the heavier coins. The arrows were hand punched into each die, creating a wide variety of positional varieties, and some dies were so heavily polished that the arrows nearly disappear on some specimens. After less than two years the arrows were removed in 1874, creating a short-lived type. The 1874 Arrows dime is in constant demand by type coin specialists who seek examples to mark the design. Superb Gem Mint State examples of any Liberty Seated dime are notable, but are particularly challenging among 1874 dimes. The Superb Gem offered here ranks among the finest certified for both the type and issue, and will make a very appealing addition to a world class cabinet. The 8 also is strongly and distinctly doubled. What this coin has that the standard VAM 10 does not is the Teardrop Die Gouge under the 6 in the Date. The teardrop is sizeable enough and interesting enough in my opinion to qualify as a new VAM, most likely it would be designated as the VAM 10A. Very Cool. This note features the familiar portrait of Alexander Hamilton that was used on all of our $10 bills through 1999, and the back shows the US Treasury. This note does not have the familiar "In God We Trust" motto above the US Treasury, though, as that motto was not added until 1957. The Blue Seal is large and at right; a large blue "10" dominates the left side of the note.

Up for Auction is a rare 1935/1934-d Boon. Quoting David Hall of PCGS “The 1934-D and 1934-S with the "small 1934" varieties of the Boone commemorative half dollars were the subject of tremendous manipulation and controversy at the time of issue. The 200th anniversary of Daniel Boone's birth was in 1934. In that year Boone silver commemoratives were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and distributed nationwide. The people involved with the distribution of the Boone commems wanted to keep the series going and indeed did thru 1938. In 1935, Boones were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints and dated 1935. In steps the distributer, C. Frank Dunn, the secretary of the Boone Bicentennial Commission, along with others, who convinced the powers that be that the 1935 Boones should also have the 1934 date on them. Then a very small number of Denver and San Francisco Mint Boones (2,003 and 2,004 respectively) were struck dated 1935 but also having a "small" 1934 on the coin. This small mintage literally created a contemporary rarity. Dunn offered the two low mintage "small 1934" varieties thru the numismatic press at $3.70 for the pair. However, very few people who ordered them actually got their order filled. Speculation is that Dunn bought the coins himself and just refunded everyone's money. Shortly after the 1935-D & S small 1934 Boones "sold out" they jumped in price on the aftermarket to $25 for the pair, then eventually $50 for the pair. And shortly after that Dunn came up with a good number of the coins, supposedly from people who had originally bought and then had resold to Dunn. The whole sleazy deal was part of the boom and bust commemorative collecting/investing fad of the mid-1930's.Today, all the manipulation of the past has been forgotten and commemorative collectors just want the coins for their sets. On November 3, 1975, Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon announced the reissuance of the $2 note as a cost-saving measure; the new $2 notes would be available from banks on April 13, 1976, Thomas Jefferson's birthday.[28] Series 1976 and onward $2 bills were partially redesigned and reissued as a Federal Reserve Note. The note retains the same portrait of Jefferson, and the basic design of the obverse remains unchanged since 1928. The treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in green ink, replacing the red used on the previous United States Note. Since the reintroduction of the note coincided with the United States Bicentennial, it was decided to use a bicentennial-themed design on the reverse. The bill was not issued specifically to celebrate the bicenntenial, as is widely assumed. An engraved rendition (not an exact reproduction) of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence replaced Monticello on the reverse. Beginning with Series 1995, all $2 notes have been produced at the Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. An issue of Series 2003A $2 bills was printed from July to September 2006 for all twelve Federal Reserve Banks.

Each has a large HAWAII printed on the reverse. If the Japanese did invade, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "Hawaii" Notes were destroyed. On November 3, 1975, Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon announced the reissuance of the $2 note as a cost-saving measure; the new $2 notes would be available from banks on April 13, 1976, Thomas Jefferson's birthday.[28] Series 1976 and onward $2 bills were partially redesigned and reissued as a Federal Reserve Note. The note retains the same portrait of Jefferson, and the basic design of the obverse remains unchanged since 1928. The treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in green ink, replacing the red used on the previous United States Note. Since the reintroduction of the note coincided with the United States Bicentennial, it was decided to use a bicentennial-themed design on the reverse. The bill was not issued specifically to celebrate the bicenntenial, as is widely assumed. An engraved rendition (not an exact reproduction) of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence replaced Monticello on the reverse. Beginning with Series 1995, all $2 notes have been produced at the Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. An issue of Series 2003A $2 bills was printed from July to September 2006 for all twelve Federal Reserve Banks.

If they did, and succedded, they could use the millions of dollars in currency the seized to buy war material. To thwart this, these Silver Certificates were sent to North Africa. Each has a yellow seal on the front. If the Nazis did succeed to over run our expeditiary force, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "North Africa" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.

Up for Auction is a Consignment I have been talking about for the last few months, and I have finally secured. I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. I have put 3 in each of the Independence auctions. We estimate the rolls to be worth $700-$900 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

It is virtually pristine, and will be just right for inclusion in an advanced type set or Important Peace dollar Set. The final year of production for the Peace dollars, unless a 1964-dated example comes to light some day, and even then, the 1935 and 1935-S Peace dollars will be the final collectible issues. Introduced in 1921, the design was struck continuously through 1928, and then discontinued until 1934 for its final two years. This Superb Gem is tied for the finest known and presents an extremely important opportunity for the advanced collector. The Lone ms67 From PCGS has never appeared at auction and the last sighting of one of the 7 graded ms67 by NGC was in June of 20 and sold for $12,000. I have included a picture of that coin. To the Unaided eye, both coins appear Pristine. Under a 10x Loupe, or by zooming into the photo, one will notice that both our example and the NGC example have numerous contact marks in non noticeable areas like the hair and the wing. I just point this out to assist our bidders in understanding that it doesn't require a perfect coin under 10x magnification to garner an ms67, just that the focal areas and very noticeable areas like open field and cheek are clean. Contact marks in areas with heavy device detail impact the grade much less.

An evenly toned, warm chocolate-copper example to represent this conditionally challenging large cent type. The strike is a tad off center toward the top on the reverse, but both sides offer uniformly bold definition over all design elements. But for the light marks on the top Obverse, and the strong roman Numeral 15 on the Reverse this example would be a terrific and solid xf coin. As it is, it still is an acceptable xf details example. It is the Small Date Variety, which can be readily discerned by looking at the 8 in the Date. On the Small Date variety, the Lower Loop is twice the size as the upper and on the large date they are similar in size. Remarkably smooth for a Classic Head cent, especially one that saw light circulation.

On November 3, 1975, Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon announced the reissuance of the $2 note as a cost-saving measure; the new $2 notes would be available from banks on April 13, 1976, Thomas Jefferson's birthday.[28] Series 1976 and onward $2 bills were partially redesigned and reissued as a Federal Reserve Note. The note retains the same portrait of Jefferson, and the basic design of the obverse remains unchanged since 1928. The treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in green ink, replacing the red used on the previous United States Note. Since the reintroduction of the note coincided with the United States Bicentennial, it was decided to use a bicentennial-themed design on the reverse. The bill was not issued specifically to celebrate the bicenntenial, as is widely assumed. An engraved rendition (not an exact reproduction) of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence replaced Monticello on the reverse. Beginning with Series 1995, all $2 notes have been produced at the Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. An issue of Series 2003A $2 bills was printed from July to September 2006 for all twelve Federal Reserve Banks.

If they did invade, they could use the millions of dollars in currency on the islands to buy war material. To thwart this, these $1 Federal Reserve Notes were sent to the islands. Each has a large HAWAII printed on the reverse. If the Japanese did invade, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "Hawaii" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.

We have weighed the roll and can assure you that it is 20 Silver Dollars, that all 20 are 1922-p and that it is not an uncirculated roll as the weight comes in slightly under the 534.60 grams that a fully uncirculated roll would weigh. On November 3, 1975, Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon announced the reissuance of the $2 note as a cost-saving measure; the new $2 notes would be available from banks on April 13, 1976, Thomas Jefferson's birthday.[28] Series 1976 and onward $2 bills were partially redesigned and reissued as a Federal Reserve Note. The note retains the same portrait of Jefferson, and the basic design of the obverse remains unchanged since 1928. The treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in green ink, replacing the red used on the previous United States Note. Since the reintroduction of the note coincided with the United States Bicentennial, it was decided to use a bicentennial-themed design on the reverse. The bill was not issued specifically to celebrate the bicenntenial, as is widely assumed. An engraved rendition (not an exact reproduction) of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence replaced Monticello on the reverse. Beginning with Series 1995, all $2 notes have been produced at the Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. An issue of Series 2003A $2 bills was printed from July to September 2006 for all twelve Federal Reserve Banks.

It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Everybody in Hawaii was sitting on pins and needles. Were the Japanese preparing a massive invasion of the islands? If they did invade, they could use the millions of dollars in currency on the islands to buy war material. To thwart this, these $1 Federal Reserve Notes were sent to the islands. Each has a large HAWAII printed on the reverse. If the Japanese did invade, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "Hawaii" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.

Up for Auction is a piece of American History which we have to date not been able to bring you. Up for auction is a $1 Gilt covered “So-Called” Dollar. It was Authorized by the United States Congress in 1876 to celebrate the “Centennial” exposition. It was called a “so-Called” Dollar because it was spendable at the exposition as a Dollar. Most people took them home as souvenirs. Many were not properly handled as most went to non numismatists. The one at hand is certified by NGC as Unc Details. It had at one time been wiped clean and a few hairlines were left behind. Nonetheless, it is an important piece of US History and a wonderful Example. The Obverse reads “THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES. And is dated 1776. The Reverse reads “BY AUTHORITY OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES IN COMMEMORATION OF THE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE”, and is dated 1876 (note the date is wildly doubled). I think after this auction ends I’m going to hunt one down for my own collection I liked this so much, lol.

The two-cent piece made its debut in 1864 at a time when gold and silver coinage had long since been absent from circulation in the Eastern and Midwestern states due to the economic turmoil and uncertainty brought about by the Civil War. Struck in bronze, the new denomination was not subject to such hoarding and, as such, initially proved popular in commercial channels. Mintages were correspondingly high in 1864 and 1865, but with the end of the Civil War in the latter year, production fell off rapidly through the series' end in 1873. The 1864 is the most plentiful date in this series, and as a first year issue it is understandably popular for type purposes. On the other hand, the issue contains an important rarity in the Small Motto variety. The first few Proofs, as well as a limited number of circulation strikes (Walter Breen, 1988, says only "a few thousand") were struck from an obverse die on which the letters in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST are small. Up for Auction is a Consignment I have been talking about for the last few months, and I have finally secured. I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. I have put 3 in each of the Independence auctions. We estimate the rolls to be worth $700-$900 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Up For Auction is the Incredibly scared McCloskey 1A Variety of the 1834 Plain 4 (First Head) $5 Gold Half Eagle. The Variety is also known as the Breen 6501. It is easily identifiable, when it is seldom encountered, by the telltale die breaks by stars 3-5. This is the Latest Die State Ever located of this Rare Variety. It is Listed as a R-3, but to date PCGS has only ever certified 2 Examples as the Mc Closkey 1-A. The Fields on this example are reflective, as is befitting, as the 1-A was also used to strike the legendary 1834 PROOF Half Eagle. As a Proof it is an R-7. I feel the listing of the McCloskey 1A as an R-3 is under rated in Rarity as it was obviously a short lived Die, having been used prior to strike the Proofs, as well as the few numbers certified to Date. The coin itself retains most of the original mint luster and being a very late Die State, the strike is much softer than usually seen, as the dies at this point had been thoroughly worn out. I am including 2 other pictures of earlier die states of the McCloskey 1-A, as well as the Original Proof Die state lacking any die cracks. According to Jaime Hernandez from PCGS, ‘The 1877 Indian Cent is unquestionably the most desirable coin in the entire circulation strike Indian Cent series. It is the second lowest mintage coin in the series, and only the 1909-S Indian cent has a lower mintage. Despite the 1877 Indian cent having the second lowest mintage in the series, it also survives in much smaller numbers than the 1909-S Indian cent. This is mainly due to the lack of coins being collected in 1877 compared to 1909. There is only one reverse die confirmed as striking all existing 1877 Indian cents. However, if there was only one reverse die employed to strike all (877,000)1877 Indian cents, then this lone die should have sustained major planchet flaws when striking such a large mintage. Sharply struck throughout, including in the centers, this is an exceptionally well produced and preserved example of the conditionally challenging Type II gold dollar. The Act of February 21, 1853, returned silver coinage to circulation in the East and Midwest by reducing the weight of the half dime, dime, quarter and half dollar to the point where their face value exceeded their bullion value. The coins were made subsidiary and were able to circulate freely in those areas for the first time since 1849. Mintages for all denominations from the half dime through the half dollar increased dramatically in 1853, with the Philadelphia Mint in particular churning out huge quantities of these coins. The effects on the gold dollar were significant and immediate, perhaps not surprising since the gold dollar was created in 1849 as a new denomination for coining California metal and also to help fill the void in commercial channels left by the withdrawal of silver. With silver coins returning to circulation in large numbers, the need for the gold dollar diminished rapidly. Yearly mintages at the Philadelphia Mint tapered off and by 1858 and through the end of the decade that facility was producing fewer than 200,000 examples per year. (The mintage for the 1860 amounted to a mere 36,514 pieces.) Additionally, the gold dollar's small size was an issue, but with few alternatives in circulation during the early 1850s, the public was accepting. In 1854 Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre prepared a new design for the gold dollar with an enlarged diameter of 15 millimeters, more convenient than the earlier 13 millimeter size. The weight of the denomination remained unchanged, so the coins were made slightly thinner. Unfortunately, the design that Longacre chose, although aesthetically pleasing, was in too high relief for the thinner planchets, and most examples displayed poor definition in and around the centers. The dies often clashed early and frequently during press runs, and many survivors exhibit numerous pronounced clash marks on one or (usually) both sides. The Mint abandoned the new design after only three years of production, and in the third -- 1856 -- only the San Francisco Mint struck examples of this type. Known in numismatic circles as the Type II gold dollar, mintages were generous only at the Philadelphia Mint in 1854 and 1855. The New Orleans and San Francisco mints achieved only modest deliveries in 1855 and 1856, respectively, while production at both the Charlotte and Dahlonega facilities in 1855 were extremely small (the 1855-D, for example, has a mintage of just 1,811 pieces). The 1854 and 1855 Philadelphia Mint issues are the obvious choices for representing this design in a gold type set and, indeed, examples are obtainable with ease in circulated grades. In lower Mint State grades the 1854 and 1855 issues are also plentiful, although the brevity of the type and its scarcity explains the premium enjoyed by these issues even in grades such as MS-61 and MS-62. The true rarity of the 1854 and 1855 Type II gold dollars emerges at the uppermost reaches of the Choice Uncirculated level, where the striking problems combined with limited contemporary interest in preserving these coins explains the paucity of premium survivors such as that offered here. This variety is sometimes mistaken for one of the 1824/1 die pairings, but the raised line to the left of the diagonal of the 4 is distinct on this piece, indicating the recut digit and not the overdate. This is one of two die pairings that comprise this Guide Book variety, both of which are similar in rarity. Superb pale silver gray surfaces have mellowed from full brilliance while never losing an iota of their dramatic cartwheel luster. Careful examination yields golden and olive highlights, particularly around peripheral design elements. The strike is strong, leaving fine details and a doubled profile of Liberty in its wake. Several grade limiting Light lines can be seen on the upper left of the Obverse. Some evidence of a die clash is seen under each of the eagle’s wings, and magnification reveals some pitting of the die surface in that area, perhaps spalling or perhaps a vestige of the process of removing the clash marks. The “distinct ridge” above the talon at right referred to in Overton is a portion of that clash mark. The repunching on the 4 of the date is readily visible, a short raised line parallel to the diagonal downstroke on the left of that numeral. With a small mintage of only 700,000 pieces, and the vast majority melted after it gained territory status, The 1883 Hawaii half dollar is quite scarce today, much more so than the Quarter or Dime. The 1883 Hawaiian "Hapalua" was struck at the San Francisco Mint on U.S. Half Dollar planchets. Many were redeemed and melted after Hawaii acquired U.S. territorial statusPer Maurice Gould and Kenneth Bressett writing in Hawaiian Coins, Tokens, and Paper Money (1961): "In 1883, Claus Spreckels, a banker, sugar planter, and power behind the throne, approached the King on the subject of having a silver coinage struck for the Islands. Application was made by the Hawaiian Government for the coinage at the San Francisco mint, of one million dollars in silver denominations to correspond with the silver coins of the United States of America in fineness and weight, regulations of the 9th of November, 1883, by the Secretary of the United States Treasury." Dr. Sheldon enumerated this variety first in his numbering scheme, suggesting it was the first 1796 Liberty Cap die pairing. Walter Breen gave the first variety honors to Sheldon-91, based on the reasoning of Denis Loring. The reverse die reappears in the 1798 series on S-178, the Second Hair Style with the Reverse of 1796. This early die state exhibits no obverse die bulge with no evidence of the late-state die crack. While the surfaces do show significant impairment, all of the devices are still strongly present and do display full VF if not XF details. When examining this example under magnification one can see terrific detail in miss liberty’s hair and cap. The date is strong and sharp and every device on the reverse is strong and complete. Treasury notes were only printed in 1890 and 1891. Some notes in the 1860s did say “treasury note” on them. However, those are not true treasury notes. These are also sometimes called 1891 $1 coin notes. 1890 and 1891 $1 treasury notes look very similar at first glance. However, there are differences in the seal type and color. The 1890 $1 treasury note also has a very dark green back. The back of the 1891 $1 specimen has a lot more white space. Like many large size currency notes from the late 1800s, the series of 1891 $1 treasury note has taken on a nickname based on the person featured on it. Many collectors simply call this a “Stanton” note. Edwin M Stanton is the bearded man on the left hand side of the bill. The biggest misconception about 1891 $1 bills is that they are star notes. Yes, every serial number does end with a solid red star. However, that does not signify that they are star replacement notes. The Bruce Roberts signature combination was only used in 1898; that is the least year that 1891 $1 bills were printed. Replacement star notes were not incorporated until 1910. Replacement stars are also hollow, not solid. So the star at the end of your serial number does not add any value. They are all like that. The star is just a design element.

Backed by bonds deposited with the Federal Government, this kind of money says “National Currency” at the top center of the note. These notes were issued by banks who received a Charter from the United States government allowing them to issue money. The Government Printing Office printed these notes with the same design except for the name of the banks, signatures of the bank officers and the Charter number. National Currency notes were made from 1863 to 1929. These notes were a way of creating confidence in an always shaky banking system. Member banks were required to deposit bonds with the government. The bank could then issue currency equal to 90% of the amount of the bonds. The financial panic of 1929 destroyed many of the National Banks and put an end to this system.There were more than 14,000 banks that issued National Currency and there are large numbers of avid collectors. The 1929 issue was the only “small size” issue, that is to distinguish from the “horse blanket” size notes of years previous to 1929. The note comes in two types. The Type I note has a brown seal with the charter number only in large black numerals. Type 2 notes have in addition the charter number printed with brown letters near the serial number of the note. This is from the 'Bank of America and Saving Association San Francisco' Charter number 13044. National Currency was only made at this bank in 1929

When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes. The note itself is a Silver Certificate. Silver Certificates were redeemable in Silver. One of their most distinctive qualities is the blue Treasury seal and serial numbers. These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. The legend states that Silver had been deposited in the Treasury and was payable on demand to the note’s bearer.

This note features the familiar portrait of George Washington that was used on all of our $1 bills through to today, and the back shows A large One Dollar and gives this note its name of a "Funny Back". This note does not have the familiar "In God We Trust" motto on the reverse, though, as that motto was not added until 1957.

One of their most distinctive qualities is the blue Treasury seal and serial numbers. These notes include an additional legend printed on the face that is not present on any other Federal Reserve notes. The legend states that Silver had been deposited in the Treasury and was payable on demand to the note’s bearer.
