An Exceptional French and Indian Wars Engraved Powder Horn

Lot #1 (Sale Order 1 of 192)

A fine French and Indian Wars New York style map horn with elaborate engraved scenes.  At the top of the horn near the throat is a rare depiction of a rank of armed militia facing off against an equally impressive group of British grenadiers sporting mitre caps.  The center of the horn with engraved British Monarch Coat of Arms surrounded by complicated map system.  Map system includes at the top Lake Ontario and tributaries including the Hudson River valley with all major cities including Albany, Saratoga, Crown Point and Ticonderoga.  All major French and Indian, and later Revolutionary War forts are included in this beautifully engraved horn with the river system ending in New York with several Naval ships.  Next to New York is a naval designed compass.  This horn measures 14" through the curve and 3" in diameter.  Base is connected by wood pegs with a lanyard ring on the bottom.  4.5" throat with raised rings to spout.  A very fine horn that could easily have seen use in both the French and Indian War, and later Revolutionary War.

Revolutionary War Powder Horn with Engraved Folk Styled Animal Scenes Identified to Jonathan Hunton

Lot #2 (Sale Order 2 of 192)

Jonathan Hunton's Revolutionary War Powder Horn with Engraved Folk Styled Animal Scenes Identified to Jonathan Hunton of Milford, New Hampshire

Very elegant engraved powder horn with several folk style animal scenes and identified to Jonathan Hunton.  Engraved animals on this horn include several large North American game species such as deer, elk, bear, ducks and birds.  Several marine animals are also engraved with fine detail including fish, turtles and beavers.  Blending in with the game species are mystical animals with a mermaid with lions head and a half horse half marine animal.  In the center of the animal scenes is a soldier on horse back in attack posture.  Just under the identification is a lion.  The engraved identification states "Jonathan Hunton His" over "Horn Made At Milford" over "John".  The Horn measures 13.25" through the curve with the base measuring 3" in diameter.  The base is connected to the horn proper with wood pegs.  A long 4" throat to raised ring and spout.

Johnathan Hunton enlisted on October 4, 1775, to Captain Joshua Abbott's Company with 41 other subscribers in the Colony of New Hampshire for $4.00 for full satisfaction.  This specific unit was under the command of the Fifth Company of Col. John Stark.  This unit was at several famous battles including Bunker Hill in 1775.  Jonathan Hunton was also involved with the Battle of Saratoga that ended with the capture of General John Burgoyne.

Condition: This horn is in very good condition having been cleaned in the past.  The horn proper still displays a yellowing mustard patina.  The throat and base with a darker brown patina.  The engraving and markings are in very good condition.  A great horn with good history.

Twice-Converted Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1840 Rifled-Musket Twice-Converted Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1840 Rifled-Musket

Twice-Converted Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1840 Rifled-Musket

Lot #31 (Sale Order 29 of 192)

.69 caliber, 42" barrel, no S/N.  Bright barrel secured to military stock by three spring-retained barrel bands.  Lockplate marked forward of hammer with "[eagle]/US".  Marked rear of hammer "HARPERS/FERRY/1841".  Sideplate and tail of triggerguard marked with matching "12" rack numbers, as do barrel bands.  Lockplate interior marked "A12", with back of hammer marked "12".  Button end ramrod.  Top of barrel marked in two lines "BUTTERFIELD'S/PHILADA".

The Butterfield Patent priming method, designed by Jesse Butterfield and patented in 1855, utilized a disk of fulminate mercury stored in an attached reserve forward of the hammer.  In 1859, Butterfield was awarded a contract from the U.S. government for the right to convert 5,000 arms in the arsenals to his system.  Final numbers and other data related to the completion, or lack thereof, to the contract have been lost.  In any case, this arm seems to have been converted at an unknown time from the Butterfield system to the more conventional percussion cap primer.

Condition: Good.  Barrel retains a mostly bright finish with some scattered oxidation and light rust spots.  Some marking to metal from old conversions.  Markings legible.  Stock shows some minor wood loss around barrel but is otherwise free of major cracks and damage.  Mechanically functional. Bore is mostly bright with some old dust and visible rifling.

Model 1865 Spencer Carbine Attributed to Kit Carson Model 1865 Spencer Carbine Attributed to Kit Carson

Lot #56 (Sale Order 53 of 192)

.56-50 caliber, 18.5" barrel, S/N 2820. Serial number on barrel under forend matches.  Blade front sight with ladder rear sight.  Fitted with stabler cut-off.  Blued barrel with color case hardened frame and smooth walnut stock, smooth forend secured by a single barrel band. Top of receiver marked "Model 1865" over four-line "Spencer Repeating Rifle/PAT'D MARCH 6 1860/MANUF'D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO." No military markings present on stock or sub-inspector markings on small parts.  Stock decorated around the periphery with square shanked brass-headed tacks on each side of stock.  Obverse of stock hand-marked with punch tool, reading "C. CARSON", with what appears to be an abandoned attempt of the same style of marking on the reverse. Magazine follower tube not present. A hard used Spencer carbine, showing features and wear typical of American Indian use.

According to a document dated July 24, 1946, this carbine was placed on loan to Bent Lodge No. 42, Free and Accepted Masons, by Mrs. C.D. Weimer (nee Elsa Gusdorf) shortly before the death of her mother Bertha on August 30, 1946. The document specifies that the carbine is to be held "In Trust for Melvin B. Weimer" Elsa's son.

Bent Lodge served as the caretakers of the Carson Property after its initial acquisition by the Lodge in 1910. In 1937, under the care of Lodge member Floyd Morrow, the house was first used as a museum, with the lodge charging a small fee for tours.  Recognizing it's significance, we assume that Bertha Gusdorf instructed Elsa to place the carbine on loan to the Museum. In 1949, the Kit Carson Memorial Fund Inc. was chartered to ensure the perpetual care of the site as a museum.

Although the history of the carbine is lost to the ages, the Gusdorf's held a prominent place in Taos history. Elsa Gusdorf (1898-1946) was the daughter of Alexander (1848-1923) and Bertha Gusdorf (1858-1946) who came to the Taos area in the mid to late 1870s.  Together with his half brother, Alexander established a flour mill, a hardware store, opened the Don Fernando Hotel and was the President of the First State Bank of Taos. At his death in 1923, the Gusdorf estate consisted of more than 12,000 acres of ranch and mining lands, along with other real estate holdings.  Bertha became responsible for the family fortunes, and became the first woman to serve as president of the bank. The couple had two daughters, Elsa (Weimer) and Corine (Wylie)

Elsa lived most of her younger years in Taos, before marrying C. D Weimer of Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was through Elsa that the carbine has descended.

Though the document from Bent Lodge states that this piece was "Kit Carson's Rifle", the possibility of its use by the western hero is unclear, as Carson passed away at Fort Lyon, Colorado on May 23, 1868. By this time in his life Carson had been retired from active military service since 1867. The first military US Model 1865 carbines did not arrive in the Colorado Territory until 1868, at which time 500 were issued. Though rare, these carbines are easily distinguished by a brand on the observe side of the buttstock reading "U.S./COL. TER." in addition to the typical military cartouches.  However, the gun may have been acquired by Carson on his late 1867 trip to Washington, in which he accompanied several Chiefs of the Ute nation to assist them in their lobbying of the U.S. Federal Government for aid. In any case, the carbine has for many years been labeled as his carbine, even being the subject of a published picture in the 1978 Time-Life publication The Scouts (page 33). The lot is further accompanied by a Polaroid photograph dated 10/7/98 showing the carbine on display with other rifles at the Carson Museum.

The lot additional includes a beaded buckskin rifle scabbard (which was almost certainly not made for the carbine)  from the early 20th century, as well as a copy of the original loan documents from the Bent Lodge, the Polaroid photograph showing the gun on exhibit, and a copy of the Time Life series book in which the carbine and scabbard are illustrated.

Condition: Carbine shows wear typical of Indian use. Barrel has a mixed gunmetal patination with some streaks of rust around receiver along with some darkening to a chocolate coloration.  Some patches of bright steel remaining on receiver as well as triggerguard.  Markings on lockplate obliterated, with receiver markings partially legible.  Some loss of tacks with stabler cut-off mechanism missing.  Stock shows some marks and blemishes consistent with age and use as well as some drying and stable cracks, especially on wrist.  Some sections of missing wood typical with a well-used gun of this age.  Sling bar missing.  Action is fine and very tight.  Bore is dark with scattered old pitting and some visible rifling.  A well-used carbine with western provenance

Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver

Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver

Lot #61 (Sale Order 58 of 192)

.45 Colt caliber, 7.5" barrel, S/N 4139 (mfg. ca1874). Blued and color case hardened finish, smooth walnut grip. Single line "italic" barrel address, two-line with two-date patent marking on frame, followed by U.S. Matching serial numbers on frame, barrel, triggerguard, butt and cylinder. However the font of the cylinder numbers does not match the balance of the gun numbers. Bottom of barrel marked with small Ainsworth "A" inspection and small "P". Additional small "A" inspections appear on the triggerguard and on top of the backstrap, although not on the frame as is correct. Black powder frame, early pattern ejector housing with locating pin and bullseye ejector rod head, six-groove wide rifling with narrow lands. Military pattern checkering on the hammer spur, minimal chamfer (bevel) on the front edge of the cylinder, correct for early production single actions. Some cross polish evident around front sight blade. Grip appears to be an old replacement with imperfect fit and no number visible in the backstrap cut out. An interesting early Single Action that appears to be an Ainsworth inspected gun that had a hard life after its military use and wears an old set of replacement grips. While this falls in the range of potential "Custer" Single Actions, it is more likely one fo the guns that was later reissued to the Post Office and falls within a cluster of those serial numbers, explaining why the gun may have escaped being altered to artillery.

Condition: Good. Retains no finish with a mottled and oxidized gray patina. Markings remain mostly clear and legible. Cylinder may be re-numbered. Mechanically functional, good bore with moderate oxidation. Grips replaced with wear, bumps, dings and chips.

Condition: Good. Retains much of an old re-nickel over some pitting. Lot #64 (Sale Order 61 of 192)

.45 Colt caliber, 5.5" barrel, S/N 349801 (mfg. ca1927). Nickel finish, mother of pearl grips. Engraved with flowing foliate scrolls with feathery sprays which cover most fo the smokeless powder frame and part of the cylinder and barrel. Coverage is about 75%. Grips with raised carved steer head on the obverse with red eyes. Accompanied by a Colt Factory Letter that confirms that the gun was factory engraved with a nickel finish and was shipped to Wolf & Klar in Fort Worth on January 12, 1927. It was the only gun in the shipment. The letter also notes that the gun had hard rubber grips when it left the factory, which are no longer present. A lovely late pre-war Single Action with factory engraving that would enhance any serious Colt collection.

Artifacts Purportedly from the Gunfight at the OK Corral Artifacts Purportedly from the Gunfight at the OK Corral

Artifacts Purportedly from the Gunfight at the OK Corral

Lot #68 (Sale Order 65 of 192)

Lot of 2.  Includes a brass .45 caliber cartridge case, and a spent, mushroomed slug purportedly from the famed Gunfight at the OK Corral, which took place in Tombstone, Arizona on October 26, 1881.

According to the documentation accompanying these artifacts they were originally found in Tombstone by Joe Seubbing in 1966. Seubbing reportedly removed the slug from the window frame of the Addie Bourland Dress Shop, which formed the backdrop for the Earp's during the fight.  At the time, Seubbing speculated that it was fired by Billy Clanton.

The shell casing was found on the South Side of Fremont street where the gunfight took place.

Seubbing subsequently sold the relics to Mike Moorman who displayed them in a private museum until they were acquired by the present owner. Includes a copy of a July 20, 1992 typed note from Steubbing, with an inked addendum from Mike Moorman

**Engraved Smith & Wesson Military & Police 4th Change (M1905) Revolver to George A. Willhauck

Lot #99 (Sale Order 96 of 192)

.38 Special caliber, 4" barrel, S/N 393102. Blued finish, color case hardened hammer and trigger, checkered wood grips. Double action, 6-shot revolver with wing out cylinder. Right side of barrel marked SMITH & WESSON, with small S&W trademark logo on left side of frame, under cylinder release latch. Right side of barrel marked 38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG. Barrel address in two lines reading: SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA / PATENTED FEB. 8 06, SEPT. 14 09, DEC. 29, 14. Matching serial numbers on the butt, under the barrel and on the rear of the cylinder, with the right grip pencil numbered to the gun. The frame recess and crane are both mating numbered 18564. Gun is profusely engraved with flowing deep relief foliate scrolls with nearly 100% coverage on the frame, nearly all of the cylinder with the exception of the flutes and with additional decoration at the breech and muzzle of the barrel, the butt, gripstrap, backstrap and triggerguard. The right side of the frame features a circular panel with a falcon as the central image. The backstrap is additionally engraved with the name: GEORGE A. WILLHAUCK.

A quick check of census records finds that in 1940 a 50-year old George A. Willhauck was living in Boston, working as a "Collections Attorney" for the Boston Telephone and Telegraph Company. Willhauck had served as Sergeant Major during WWI in the headquarters company of the 71st Artillery - Coastal Artillery Corps. Unlike many coastal artillery regiments, the 71st was actually deployed with the A.E.F., arriving in Liverpool, England on August 15, 1918 and Le Harve, France on August 30. The regiment was deployed with tractor towed 8" howitzers, but the November 11 Armistice occurred before the regiment saw combat. As "collections" in the 1930s and 1940s often involved physically tracking people down and collecting payment face to face, carrying a firearm for protection was not a bad idea and hardly uncommon. The engraving on this gun is almost certainly factory work and it is likely that the gun was commissioned by Willhauck, or possibly by the telephone company for him. The quality and condition are exquisite and it is a fantastic example of work being done at Smith & Wesson in the pre-World War II period. A factory letter from Roy Jinks has been commissioned.

**C&R or FFL required

Condition: Excellent. Retains most of the blued finish with some very minor wear and loss at high edges and contact points and some minor thinning, most notably on the backstrap. Hammer and trigger retain nearly all of their vivid case coloring. All markings and engraving remain extremely crisp and sharp. Mechanically excellent, fine bore. Grips fine with crisp checkering and pencil marked with matching serial number. Overall a fantastic engraved pre-War Military & Police 4th Change (M1905).

David Clark MC-3A Partial Pressure Flying Suit with Canvas Carrying Bag David Clark MC-3A Partial Pressure Flying Suit with Canvas Carrying Bag

David Clark MC-3A Partial Pressure Flying Suit with Canvas Carrying Bag

Lot #110 (Sale Order 107 of 192)

Operational in 1957, the David C. Clark Company of Worcester, Massachusetts developed the Model MC-3 suit as a replacement for the MC-1, itself designed as a replacement for the S-2 suit.  A precautionary measure against catastrophic de-pressurization at high altitudes, a constant danger faced by pilots of high-altitude Cold-War aircraft such as the U-2 and B-36.  A great improvement over previous suits, the MC-3 was a turning point in pressure-suit design, using a combination of the then-common "capstan" system, and an innovative full-torso bladder around the vital organs, extending from the shoulders to the middle of the thigh.  In the event of depressurization, the suit would inflate, protecting the pilot's body against the swelling caused by the low air pressure at high altitude.  The raised tubes on the extremities would pull against the fabric, ensuring a tight fit when pressurized.  This would give the pilot time to guide the plane to a safer, lower altitude.  The suit came in 12 sizes, with fine adjustments made possible by laces throughout the suit.

The MA-2 helmet, developed by International Latex Corporation of Dover, Delaware, featured a number of improvements over its predecessors, including additional connective snaps, a better microphone, high-pressure oxygen delivery hoses, and a feeding port for food and drink on long flights.  The MA-2 was a very successful design and would be used well into the 1960s, paired with several models of partial pressure suits.  The helmet was used in a number of experimental high altitude/speed projects, including the XS-1, X-1A, and X-s rocket flights, as well as Project Excelsior, which included a parachute jump of over 30 Kilometers (18 miles).

Label on interior head and neck liner reads, Hood, Helmet, Flying MA-2 Stock No 8415 NL 28125-21 International Latex Corp Dover Delaware L.L.C. Part No. SPD1 MFG Contract No AF33 (602) Suppliment Agreement No Inspected JL 1957. U.S.

Waterloo Dirk of the 42d Regiment, Black Watch, in a Shadow Box Frame Waterloo Dirk of the 42d Regiment, Black Watch, in a Shadow Box Frame

Waterloo Dirk of the 42d Regiment, Black Watch, in a Shadow Box Frame

Lot #111 (Sale Order 108 of 192)

11.25" blade, 15.25" overall length. Carved wood handle with ca 50% of pommel severed from the grip. Additionally ca 50% of wood is broken at the top of the grips.  Metal scabbard is numbered 42 and has three heavily patinated brass fittings with floral motifs. Lot includes a copy of a photograph of Hougomont and a medal with George P. Regent and a bust of King George on one side. Opposite side marked Waterloo and Wellington June 18, 1815.

Cased in a shadow box case with cutout figure of a soldier with a note that reads, Waterloo Dirk. Bandsman's dirk of the 42d Regiment, the Black Watch, found at Hougomont, a farmhouse complex, scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the Battle of Waterloo, 18 June 1815. The tin sheath, once leather covered, is marked with St. Andrew and 42. The middle band rear engraved, BAND, 42d Regt. No. 9" Note attached states Col. H. Petrie found the dirk "in the wall of Hougomont." On 16 June 1815 the Black Watch lost 49% of the officers and men at Quatre Bras, (45 KIA; 243 WIA). The survivor fought at Waterloo two days later in the 5th British Infantry Division which sustained 43% casualties. The 42d lost 5 KIA; 42 WIA. Presumably, this dirk belonged to one of these men? The Black Watch was one of four regiments cited individually for bravery by the Duke of Wellington.

Condition: Blade is heavily pitted and grips with fragments of wood missing as noted. Knife and scabbard are secured by wire to the background - so other side of the dirk has not been thoroughly examined. Scabbard has a significant dent in the metal. Scabbard is in near-relic condition.

Bryant surmounted by Scottish flag and motto "RESPICE ASPICE PROSPICE" (Look to the past, present, and future).  Steel scabbard.

Henry Balfour Fergusson Bryant is included in the 1901 British Army List as a Lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry serving in the Egyptian Army, with his first appointment dated July of 1899.  Before his entry into the Highland Light Infantry, in 1895, Bryant is recorded as serving in the militia.  He is again mentioned in the 1907 List as a Lieutenant serving as Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Bombay, India.  Balfour would not serve long in India, as he died of enteric fever in 1908.  His obituary in the Times of London states that by his death "...the Army loses one of its strongest racquet players."

Condition: Good.  Blade shows some scattered oxidation from age with etching remaining visible and legible.  Some wear and flaking of finish to guard typical of age.  Most of the blue silk trim is missing from guard.  A very attractive sword from a short-lived regiment.

Wilkinson British Highland Officer's Sword of Lieutenant James Ritchie, 3rd Gordon Highlanders Wilkinson British Highland Officer's Sword of Lieutenant James Ritchie, 3rd Gordon Highlanders

Wilkinson British Highland Officer's Sword of Lieutenant James Ritchie, 3rd Gordon Highlanders

Lot #116 (Sale Order 113 of 192)

32.25" spearpoint blade with 16" median fuller, 1.125" wide at ricasso, S/N 41112.  Plated steel guard of regimental form with buff leather-backed red wool liner and wire-wrapped shagreen grip.  Blade well-etched throughout with thistles, reverse with "GORDON HIGHLANDERS" with thistle under crown, along with panel with stylized initials "JR".  Reverse shows George VII royal cypher.  Reverse ricasso marked with four-line Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall address.  Regimental pattern steel scabbard.

Lieutenant James Ritchie appears in the British Army List of June, 1907 as serving in the 3rd Gordon Highlanders, a militia regiment.  He appears to disappear from army records after this time, which may indicate he was a short-term officer, usually serving in their units for a year.  Another "J Ritchie" appears as a Lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry in the Army List of 1915, though it is unclear whether this officer is of any relation to the one who owned this sword, as there is no corresponding name in the lists of the Gordon Highlanders.

Condition: Blade has a pewter patination with good detail remaining on blade.  Guard has some very minor wear to plating.  Grip and liner in very good condition.

Wilkinson British Highland Officer's Undress Sword of Captain Charles E Anderson, Gordon Highlanders

Lot #119 (Sale Order 116 of 192)

Wilkinson British Highland Officer's Undress Sword of Captain Charles E Anderson, Gordon Highlanders, KIA 1916

Born in Shanghai in 1890, Charles Edward Anderson undertook the Royal Military Academy exam in 1909 at the age of 19.  After graduation he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.  In October 1914, Anderson was assigned to D Company and departed Southampton for France of the SS Minneapolis and two days latter arrived at the Belgian port of Zeebrugge along with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guard, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, and 2nd Battalion Border Regiment .  On the 28th of that month, while attached to the 1st Brigade South of Cheluvelt, Belgium, the regiment came under a ferocious German attack proceeded by heavy artillery fire.  The attack was successfully repelled with the loss of over 100 men from the Battalion.  Another attack by the battalion three days later resulted in the serious wounding of Lieutenant Anderson, who received a bullet wound to the knee joint.  THis action would later be known as one of the opening engagements of the First Battle of Ypres.

Anderson's wound was severe, and required an extensive convalescence.  Medical documents dated August, 1915, state that despite numerous treatments he was still considered unfit for general or home duty, though he received a positive prognosis.  He penned numerous letters to his superiors stressing his desire to return to the men of his unit, though these were met with disappointing results.  Eventually, after applying for a Adjutant position, Anderson returned to the Gordons in 1916.

In July 1916, the Gordons found themselves dug in at a position near Mametz Wood, facing off against the German 2nd Army during what would be known as the Battle of Bazentin Ridge, part of the Battle of the Somme.  After the loss of forward positions held by the 22nd British Infantry Brigade, the Gordons were ordered to attack and retake the village of Bazentin-le-Petit.  Anderson's D Company would make up the first line of the assault, commencing at 3:30 PM on July 14th.  The attack was costly for the British, as the Germans had constructed several machine gun emplacements which were used to great effect.  According to documents from the British War Office, Anderson was killed on July 20th though the exact circumstances of his death are not embellished upon.  He is buried in lot K. 5 of Dernancourt Communal Cemetery.

Thomas Nicol Folster Hourston, a native of the Orkney Isles in Scotland was attached to the London Scottish Regiment for ten months from 1914 to 1915.  He then joined the 10th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders on November 11, 1916, transferring from the 3rd Reserve Battalion with the rank of Second Lieutenant.  During this time he was wounded twice, once at the Battle of Loos (September 1915) and again at Arras (April 1917).

Lieutenant Hourston miraculously survived a potentially deadly accident in 1917 near Havrincourt, France, when his party was inadvertently found to be in an area in which heavy friendly artillery fire was imminent.  Luckily, one of the first shells to be fired was carried by the wind and missed his group.  Hourston was promoted to temporary Captain in February 1918, and later that month was appointed Adjutant.  He was decorated twice for bravery, earning a Military Cross in May 1917, and a bar to the medal December 1918.  He is listed in the June, 1920 Service List as a Captain in the Argyll & Sutherlands.

** A.H. Fox A Special Presentation Shotgun Named to W.H. Gough

Lot #161 (Sale Order 154 of 192)

12 gauge, 30" engraved-rib barrels choked modified and full, S/N 6500. Blued barrels, deeply engraved color case hardened receiver, highly figured walnut stock with lobed pistol-gripped stock and leather covered recoil pad. Checkered and carved splinter forend with engraved case hardened latch and bone and gold inlaid escutcheon. Water table engraved with foliate decorations and further engraved: PRESENTATION / GRADE / 6500 / SPECIAL  with the opposite side engraved with the patent date information. Interior of forend engraved en-suite with matching serial number as well. Matching serial number 6500 is present on triggerguard tang and under barrels which are also marked: A SPECIAL and FOX / PROOF. The number 3 is under both barrels. The barrel rib is marked in gold leaf in two lines: BUILT EXPRESSLY FOR W.H. GOUGH / BY A.H. FOX GUN Co., PHILA. PA. The receiver is profusely engraved with the highest quality tight banknote Arabesque scrolls, foliate sprays and game scenes with applied gold decorations. These include a classical archer motif on both of the recoil shields, roses on the lower front edge of the receiver, a wolf and a grouse on the bottom of the receiver and a partridge on the triggerguard. The barrels are similarly engraved at the chambers and muzzles and feature an applied gold elk on the side of each chamber along with gold bands. The wrist of the highly figured stock is finely checkered with carved floral boarders and the stock flats behind the receiver are similarly carved. The stock is capped by a leather covered recoil pad. The splinter foend is carved and checkered with a finely engraved case hardened release mechanism and features a bone and gold inlaid escutcheon. The double triggers are gold plated and have a 14.25" length of pull. The drop at comb is 1.875" and the drop at heel is 2.375". A really outstanding example of the gun maker's art, exquisitely executed and very attractive. The gun is accompanied by a Merkel hard case with a set of Merkel accessories inside. The records of Doug Turnbull Restorations indicate that this gun (by serial number, noted as an "AH FOX A Special") was sent to them in 1993 for restoration. Details of the work performed were not immediately available in their records. The loss of Fox factory records makes it impossible to confirm the serial number and configuration of the Gough presentation gun. Were it possible to definitively prove that this is the Gough gun it would no doubt be worth well in excess of $150,000 in the current Fox collector market.

William Gough was an engraver who engraved for A.H. Fox, Parker, Winchester, Remington, Marlin and Colt, as well as Meriden and Aubrey shotguns. His father, Harold, was a Birmingham Gun trade engraver that came to the US and worked for Parker Bros in Meriden. William Gough apprenticed under his father at Parker Bros. About 1912, he went to the A.H. Fox Gun Co. and was head of their engraving department. He designed the bolder engraving styles Fox went to in the 1913-14 time frame. Even though he was head of the Fox engraving department, most of the work he did was commission work from others (Winchester, Colt, Marlin, etc.) and a few high-grade Fox guns. Once the gun company part of their business was sold to Savage, and the production of the Ansley H. Fox gun was moved to Utica, NY, this outside commission work didn't sit well with the Savage executives and Gough opened his own engraving shop in Utica, and continued engraving into the 1950s. From the Utica newspaper dated August 24th 1954, William Gough "...took commissions in special engraving jobs from many parts of the country...he worked on engravings for Aubrey Guns, then manufactured by Sears Roebuck Co.; for guns turned out by Norwich Arms Corp., and Hollenbeck guns manufactured in Virgiina." (courtesy www.meridenfirearms.com)

**C&R or FFL required

Condition: Very fine, as restored. Gun shows little use, however the blue on the barrels has thinned with age and has as streaky appearance under strong light, suggesting that it may be original finish. The blue has mixed with a lightly oxidized plum patina that make the barrels appear to retain more blue to the naked eye than they really do. The receiver retains most of the vivid case coloring with crisp and clear engraving and markings throughout. Mechanically fine and tight, with fine, bright bores. Stock fine with some light handling marks. Case and accessories fine as well.
