1935 PONY EXPRESS DIAMOND JUBILEE So Called Half Dollar 50c Grades GEM+ Unc. As part of the celebrations planned for the 75th anniversary of the 1860 launch of the Pony Express service, the Oregon Trail Memorial Association engaged the Coin Department of the Scott Stamp & Coin Company of New York City to strike the "official memento of the Pony Express Diamond Jubilee", however the medal was actually struck by Whitehead & Hoag, a firm which incidentally struck many of the medals in the so called dollar series. The Oregon Trail Memorial Association was the sponsor of the Pony Express Diamond Jubilee. The Jubilee ran from 3 April to 24 October 1935 and featured a "re-ride" of the original Pony Express trail in August. The original 1966-mile trail had its eastern terminus in St. Joseph, Missouri and its western terminus in Sacramento, California. The re-ride was completed by approximately 300 members of the Boy Scouts (the Boy Scouts of America, coincidentally, was celebrating its 25th anniversary in 1935). The riders carried mail addressed to US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, an avid stamp collector, which was given to him after the ride in a ceremony on the White House lawn in Washington, DC. The medal was struck in nickel-silver (i.e., nickel) and is 1.25 inches in diameter. The medal's obverse features a Pony Express rider in full gallop out on the trail, while the reverse depicts one of the many relay stations that were set up along the route so that riders could change horses, get food and water or get some rest if it was the end of their shift. It was designed by William Henry Jackson, the Research Secretary of the Oregon Trail Memorial Association.

T-52 Dec. 2 1862 $10 Confederate States of America (C.S.A.) PF-2/Cr.376 Grades xf+. The T-52 was printed on plain pink paper and has a blue back. The center of the note presents a representation of the proposed state capitol of South Carolina in Columbia. R. M. T. Hunter, who served as Secretary of State for a brief stint, as was a Confederate Senator, is shown at the lower right. The ornate blue back bears the denomination. This note was payable six months after the ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and United States. It also was receivable for all dues except exports dues and fundable in 8% stock.

1870's US Fractional Currency 50¢ Fourth Issue Fr-1376 Grades vf, very fine. A stunning Fourth Issue 10 Cent Fractional seen with marvelous centering and good size margins. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

Continental Currency May 10th, 1775 $3 Fr-CC3 Grades g, good. An emission totaling $3,000,000 payable in Spanish milled dollars, or the equivalent in gold or silver, was authorized by the Continental Congress resolution of May 10, 1775 and approved by resolutions of June 23-24 and July 25, 1775 and put into circulation in August. The money, for "The United Colonies", was to be used to pay war expenses and was to be redeemed from taxes collected by the colonies. The paper, made at Ivy Mills in Chester County, Pennsylvania, contained blue fibers and mica flakes and was similar to the type used on Pennsylvania currency. The exception was the unique $20 denomination which was printed on paper made by Benjamin Franklin (thin white paper that had the left side polychromed by marbling). This bill is also a different size from the other denominations. The bills were printed by Hall and Sellers in Philadelphia using border cuts, emblem cuts, nature prints and hand set type. Apparently, thirty six of the borders were designed and cut by David Rittenhouse. The bills were signed with red and brown ink and numbered in dark red ink. Counterfeit detectors were on pink paper except for the $20, which was on blue paper. Denominations printed were the: $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, $7, $8, $20 and $30.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

The Roll at hand weighs 536.65 Grams. Deducting the Wrapper Weight of 2.1 Grams, the average coin in this roll weights 26.72 Grams. Your going to find in this roll a lot of Uncirculated coins and a few sliders. This is a Very Near Solid roll of Uncirculated Morgan Dollars.

1893 Isabella Isabella Quarter 25c Grades Choice AU/BU Slider. When Examining an Isabella Quarter on the Obverse, wear first shows in the area of the Crown’s Central Oval Jewel and on Isabella’s cheek. Reverse wear will first be noted on the Strand of Wool Resting on the Kneeling Spinner’s Thigh. Due to Die Wear, Raised or Sharp Definition of the Strand of Wool is not the norm. This area can display a Slight Weakness of Strike, which is par for the Design and should not be Labeled Wear. In January 1893, well after the Columbian half dollar was a reality, Mrs. Potter Palmer, well-known Chicago socialite, patron of the arts, and grande dame of the Exposition,[1] suggested to the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives that $10,000 of the money earmarked for the Board of Lady Managers of the World's Columbian Exposition be given in the form of a special issue of souvenir (as they were called) quarter dollars. This was translated into a law approved March 3, 1893, which stated that the production of these quarters would not exceed 40,000 and that the pieces would be of standard weight and fineness. Like the Columbian half dollars, the quarters would be made from metal taken from uncurrent silver coins held by the Treasury Department.The Board of Lady Managers had been formed at the insistence of Susan B. Anthony, who has determined that women should be adequately represented in the administration of the Exposition. Interestingly, there was also a Board of Gentlemen Managers, but this did not get much publicity, as it was taken for granted. The Board of Lady Managers took complete charge of the quarter-dollar project and stated that the coins were to have female motifs. Kenyon Cox, a well-known illustrator, was commissioned to prepare sketches, apparently furnishing motifs that were eventually modified by Charles E. Barber at the Mint. However, another artist, Caroline C. Peddle, one of Cox's former art students, was also heavily involved and furnished sketches, all of which were eventually rejected.[2] For the obverse, a depiction of Queen Isabella of Spain was suggested, for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella furnished the financing for Columbus' voyage of discovery, Isabella vowing to pledge her crown and jewels if necessary (according to popular legend). In April 1893 the Treasury Department responded by submitting its own two obverse designs to the Board of Lady Managers, one sketch showing Isabella as a young queen (this was eventually chosen) and the other with a facing head of Isabella as an adult. Thus the Isabella quarter, as it was soon to be designated, became the first legal tender United States coin to depict a foreign monarch

A well framed and crisp example of this 1863 Ace that features the portrait of Alabama Senator (U.S. and Confederate) Clement C. Clay at center. The printed design elements are boldly inked. After the Civil War broke out in 1861, the newly established Confederate government began to issue it's own money as legal tender to the citizens of the South. The gamble was that if the South won the war, the money would be redeemable. The 1st note from the Government of the Confederate States of America was issued in April of 1861. From then on, notes were issued on through 1864. Almost every Confederate note was painstakingly hand signed and numbered. It is not uncommon for these notes to have uneven, or rough borders since scissors or shears were used to hastily cut the sheets of notes apart.

From the feedback we have been receiving, people are happy with these rolls, nearly half the roll seems to be teens, all the rolls have a few Indians, most of the rolls have some steel cents, and a lot of the wheaties are mintmarks. These shotgun rolls are all from a new consignee. They are all frrom one Estate. This particular Roll shows a 1909-s on one end and a VDB reverse on the other end.

A Proof Like and essentially brilliant representative of this conditionally rare Carson City issue. The scattered small obverse field marks correspond to the grade. Breen-5804 is the widely spaced Micro CC with the distance between the Cs about equal to their combined height. Breen (1988) described the Micro CC as extremely rare, while Bowers (1993) called it "quite scarce." All 1876-CC Trade dollars have a Type One obverse, about half have a Type One reverse, and only about 15% have a Micro CC. The Tall CC variety is usual for the '76-CC. An ultra rare variety of an ultra rare Issue. PCGS estimates that only 40 uncirculated examples of the entire date, all varieties exist. In this rare variety, no more than 5 examples survive. Only 75,000 of these Proof Silver Eagles have been minted, which makes it the 3rd lowest mintage Silver Eagle ever minted! All series of 1902 five dollar bills have a picture of Ben Harrison on the Left hand side of the bill. Each bill has a large blue number printed on the front of the bill twice. Despite saying series of 1902, these notes were actually printed between 1908 and 1928. There are two different varieties of 1902 $5 blue seals. If the back of your blue seal has the years 1902 and 1908 written on it, then you have what is known as a 1902 date back. If your five dollar bill does not have those two dates written on the back of it, then you have what is known as a 1902 plain back. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

Nicknamed the “Sawhorse” for its intricate back design, which features a large X, this exquisite motif was first printed in the 1870s. Issued for more than half a century, it ended with these Series 1917 notes, which were issued during the tenure of U.S. Treasury officials Hoouston Teehee and John Burke – whose signatures appear on the note’s face. Available now because of a special purchase, these lightly circulated pieces are still crisp and bright with bold color. The Legendary 1793 Left Facing Half Cent. Manley Die State 2.0, the usually seen state with HALF CENT weak on the reverse. The designer of the Liberty Cap half cent of 1793 is unknown, although various numismatists have floated their favorite nominees over the years. The head faces toward the viewer's left on the obverse, a curiosity that would be altered to face right on all the 1793-dated large cents. This XF Details half cent features mahogany-brown surfaces with lighter chocolate-brown high points. A few dark areas occupy the central reverse, emphasizing the absence of most of the denomination, a function of the 2.0 die state. A nice example of this important one-year type. Pleasing Eye Appeal. Much nicer than most in this grade. Certified by NGC.

Offered is an appealing Choice AU example of a popular early half eagle variety that will no doubt find its next home in an advanced gold type set. Light golden yellow patina blankets surfaces that retain plenty of satiny mint luster, generally in the protected areas within and around the devices. The strike is suitably bold in and around the centers, with softness of strike minor. There is only the expected light rub and wispy handling marks from light commercial use. The four known die marriages of the 1810 half eagle correspond to the four varieties listed for this issue in the Guide Book. BD-4 is the Large Date, Large 5 pairing, the obverse of which was previously used to strike the BD-3 Large Date, Small 5 variety and the reverse in its only use. An early die state example in a/a, the present coin displays no evidence of clashing, lapping or cracks on either side. This AU-58 details 1810 Large Date, Large 5 half eagle would serve with distinction in a high quality gold type set.

***Auction Highlight*** **Star Note** 1869 $1 Large Size Legal Tender Note "Rainbow Note" Graded vf20 By PMG. One of the most coveted and sought-after currency pieces in American history is this 1869 Legal Tender Series “Rainbow” Note, so named for the colorful appearance of the front design, which features a red Treasury seal and serial numbers, a green frame around the serial number, a green tint at the top of the note, and a vertical blue tint or “stain” that runs vertically through part of the paper. Not only are the 1869 Legal Tender Series notes the only notes which bear the label “Treasury Note” instead of the label “United States Note,” found on all later issues, this $1 note from the series also marks the very first appearance of President George Washington on any federal $1 denomination bill! Listed as #41 in the book 100 Greatest Currency Notes by Q. David Bowers, the Rainbow Note also features a vignette of Columbus arriving in the New World in the upper left corner. The reverse side is perhaps even more interesting, with an array of continuous geometric “flowers” surrounding the intertwined letters “US” and a block of text describing the penalties for counterfeiting. In fact, the term “greenbacks” was used for the notes thanks to their dazzling all-green colored backs. First authorized in 1862, Legal Tender Notes are the longest-lived type of U.S. paper money in the United States. Unlike other paper currency, these notes were backed only by the credit of the government, and none have been authorized since 1869.

Prior to that, the date was rare in Uncirculated condition. However, while the date is plentiful overall, it is not in high grade. The finest pieces typically seen on the market are Premium Gems, and even among them quality of strike varies. Superb Gems are almost unheard of outside of high-profile collections. No Proof like coins are known this fine, and only nine non-Proof like 1901-O dollars garner a higher grade. The present example represents an incredible bidding opportunity. Frosty, untoned surfaces radiate mint luster and reveal no bothersome abrasions. The definition above Liberty's ear is significantly above average, although there remains a touch of softness, which you will never be rid of entirely on a 1901-O. An emission totaling $3,000,000 payable in Spanish milled dollars, or the equivalent in gold or silver, was authorized by the Continental Congress resolutions of November 29, 1775 with a supplemental $10,000 added on January 6,1776 for the replacement of worn out bills. Similar to the previous issue as to paper, printing and signatures but these bills were numbered in bright red ink and detector bills were on blue paper. Denominations printed were the: $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, $7 and $8.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

1862 $100 Confederate Note, T-39 Richmond, Virginia Grades Choice AU/BU Slider. High-denomination $100 Confederate Notes are in great demand among collectors and history buffs alike. Carefully preserved for over 155 years since the Civil War. This was the first interest bearing $100 note to be issued in large quantities by the Confederacy. They paid a 7.3% annual interest rate; double that of the First Series notes of Montgomery and Richmond. Some were issued by agents by hand, and their signatures—and sometimes the place of issue—are written on the backs. Some T-39s also have interest paid stamps on the backs indicating that the interest was collected by the bearer. The notes have a popular “Train” vignette on the front, with easily visible “straight steam” (all white) coming out of the smokestack. To the left is a vignette of a milkmaid. Once thought to be an apple, the object in her left hand above her head is most likely the handle of the bucket on her head. These notes were payable six months after the ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and United States and were not fundable.

1863 US Fractional Currency 5c Second Issue fr-1232 Washington In Oval Grades Choice AU. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

It's outnumbered in the census over three to one by its type-mate, Fr. 223. Signatures Rosecrans-Nebeker. Martha Washington is the first and only woman to grace the primary portrait of U.S. paper currency. Martha Washington's image appears on the $1 Silver Certificate. The $1 Certificates were discontinued in 1957. It was the nation's second-longest issued paper money and as the name suggests was backed by the U.S. Government's silver deposits and could be redeemed at any time for silver from the U.S. Treasury. he design began in the summer of 1886. The Galveston Daily News reported on August 17th, 1886, "It is learned at the Treasury Department that the new Silver Certificates authorized at the last session of Congress will not be ready for issue before November, the $1 certificate contains a vignette of Martha Washington." The first two decades of the United States Mint's half cent production saw numerous design alterations, both purposeful and unintentional. Though several contemporary denominations exhibit similar diversity, these changes on the half cent sometimes involved the often-overlooked third side of a coin, namely the edge.The earliest half cents of 1795 exhibited a lettered edge, but when the weight of the copper planchets was reduced late in the year it was decided to revert to a plain edge in order to accommodate the reduced thickness and circumvent the difficulty of shrinking the edge lettering. Though largely struck in 1796, these plain edge coins still employed 1795-dated dies and are considered part of that issue.In addition to the two edge types, four distinct obverse types for 1795 are determined by the presence or absence of a pole projecting from Liberty’s neck, and the presence of absence of a die flaw after the first digit of the date. It is the combination of these obverse and edge types that constitute the four prominent varieties that all 1795 half cents can be categorized under: Lettered Edge, With Pole; Lettered Edge, Punctuated Date; Plain Edge, Punctuated Date; Plain Edge, No Pole. Each of these four varieties is of similar rarity in circulated grades, with the Lettered Edge becoming slightly scarcer above Extremely Fine.The example offered today has terrific detail throughout the devices, especially through liberty’s hair. 1899 $5 Dollar Large Size Silver Certificate Oncpapa Indian Chief FR# 281 Grades vf++. The five dollar silver certificate has always been one of the most popular denominations to collect. There are several different design types, all of which are quite popular. The 1899 $5 silver certificate is especially popular. The powerful engraving of Running Antelope, Chief of the Oncpapa (Hunkpapa) Lakota Sioux is featured on this large-sized $5 currency note from 1899. This is the first – and only – time a Native American image was used as the central motif on any U.S. paper currency. The central vignette of Running Antelope is highlighted by the bright vibrant blue seal and “V” denoting its denomination. The note caused some ill will among the tribes of the Great Plains when it was issued as it depicted Running Antelope as a chief wearing a Pawnee headdress as the original Lakota headdress was too tall for the engraving. Apparently the engravers at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing weren’t aware that the Lakota and Pawnee were mortal enemies on the Great Plains! Known as Ta-to-ka-in-yan-ka in Lakota, Running Antelope was a close advisor to the great Sitting Bull. Satiny surfaces are uncommonly lustrous for this conditionally challenging issue. A true Uncirculated example without even the faintest hint of a rub. Multiple abrasions on the obverse do limit its grade, but no one can deny the Uncirculated Mint State of this Rare Morgan. The 1895-O is one of the key issues in the Morgan silver dollar series, the mintage a scant 450,000 pieces. As with many silver dollars of this type, the mintage has little bearing on the availability or grade distribution of examples in today's market. Take for example the 1881-CC, an issue with an even lower mintage (296,000 pieces). Thanks to the dispersal of 147,485 coins (49.50% of the mintage!) through the various GSA sales of the 1970s, the 1881-CC is a plentiful issue in all but the finest Mint State grades. Fate was not as kind to the 1895-O, with approximately 100,000 examples being placed into circulation and much of the remaining mintage melted as part of the 270,232,722 silver dollars destroyed pursuant to the 1918 Pittman Act. Up for Auction is one of the few surviving near mint state examples of the 1839-c $2 ½ Classic Head Gold. Second and final year of the Obverse Mintmark subtype, here from the Charlotte Mint which, like New Orleans and Dahlonega, had opened the previous year, 1838. The 3 in the date is recut to the north of the original digit, while the 9 in the date is recut to the east. Both sides have a series of interesting die cracks. The obverse has a crack that runs through the left side of the original low 3 in the date, through the later 3, upward onto the face to the earlobe. A second crack, from a late state where the die may be close to shattering, runs from the obverse centering dot through the cheek and to star 2. Yet another runs from the top of the T in LIBERTY to star 9. On the reverse, one crack runs from under the beak to near the top of the eagle's wing and onward to the rim. A second crosses from the left (facing) top shield point, through the beak and to the lower right corner of the A in STATES. A final crack runs from the eagle's claws down through the large 2 and thence to the rim. Both sides are orange-gold with glints of hazel. Minor field chatter and a few light abrasions are grade-consistent, although mentionable marks are few save for scattered tiny carbon spots. 1862 $1 Large Size Legal Tender Note Fr-16 "The GreenBack" Grades vg details. Series 1862 Legal Tender bills were the first Federally issued notes. They came to be nicknamed greenbacks for the color of the back. These notes were printed on paper that was very fragile so it's common to find them in horribly compromised condition. Finding a Nicer One Like this is a rarity. Head of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln,1861-1864, and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court 1864-1873. He is probably best known to numismatists for his causing the motto "In God We Trust" to be adopted for our national coinage.

The face of this note has the portrait of Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton to the left and the denomination in two conjoined rosettes at right. Gold overprints include "GOLD" at the top center and backgrounds to the serial numbers. Issued under the Act of March 3, 1863. The back is printed in a rich orange-gold and has an eagle at the center. After December 17, 1878, gold coins and paper currency were exchangeable at par in general commerce. Accordingly, these are the first of the Gold Certificates that saw wide use. The color tended to fade. Once again, the Anderson note is superb. Among American senators Benton, nicknamed "Old Bullion," is the most famous figure in the annals of gold coins. Among other things, he was responsible for the Act of June 28, 1834, which lowered the gold content of coins, permitting them to circulate at par for the first time since 1820. The print run of this variety was 1,020,000. PMG that fewer than 350 survive today

1922 Large Size $10 Gold Certificate Fr-1173 Grades f+. It is hard to believe that large size ten dollar gold certificates were only issued in 1907 and 1922. The United States first printed gold certificates in the early 1860s. For some reason they never printed the ten dollar denomination until 1907. 1922 was the last year of the large size gold Certificate Currnecy. In 1928 paper money was changed to the size we are accustomed to seeing today. The portrait of Alexander Hamilton was used instead of the virtually unknown Michael Hillegas. Hillegas was the first treasurer of The United States. Perhaps if Hillegas had died in a duel then he would be better remembered today. All 1922 $10 gold certificates were signed by Speelman and White. Interestingly enough, there is a small variety for the series. Some notes have smaller serial numbers than the standard numbers. The small serial number notes do command a slight premium, especially in higher grades.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Look for the Golden Arches. Actual roll pictured is the roll you will get. A great original bank shotgun roll with very tight ends. We have opened a few of these rolls.
