1864 $10 Confederate Note, T68 Grades vf+. Of great historical interest this is the last $10 currency notes issued by the Confederate States of America. The 7th and last issue of Confederate notes. Notes hand signed and numbered by Confederate soldiers and families. Printed and issued over 140 years ago during the Civil War. Depicts Confederate cabinet member Robert M. T. Hunter and features a detailed vignette of horse-drawn artillery. This large 7" x 3" Confederate $10 note is a genuine keepsake from one of the most significant periods in American history.

Up for Auction is an Ultra Rare, Late Die State of the 1863 French Liberty Head facing Left, Army & Navy Civil War Token. It is a Rarity 8! WOW. One of the scarce Dies of a common looking token. It has the 13, 5 pointed stars in the field, with 6 raised stars on he headband. The die Sinker was “Smith” This obverse die was only ever paired with two reverses, the 313 and the 315, this is clearly the 313, the rarer of the two. Great find! Fuld 7b/313 R-8 BUT, in addition to all of that, it is the ultra rare late die state, stuck on rusted dies, and the date has one of the very few overdates in all of the civil war tokens. 1863/6. It must have been struck as 1866, with an incorrect digit and then restru=ck with the correct 1863. Even though this token is generally considered an R-8, this overdate would bring it to an R-9 as a condition rarity! Incredible coin!

The denomination was struck sporadically at the San Francisco Mint from 1854 through 1860, and then again in 1870, after which gold dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint only. The 1854-S is not only the first-year issue from this mint, it is also the only San Francisco issue of the Type One design. Just 14,632 pieces were struck. Uncirculated survivors rarely appear at auction, especially in near-Gem condition. This Superb PQ Example displays a razor-sharp strike and satiny brass-gold and peach mint luster. No singular abrasions are worthy of mention. Tied for 3rd finest known.

On January 28, 1791 Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton submitted an extensive report that examined the issues relative to the establishment of a Mint: "A plan for an establishment of this nature, involves a great variety of considerations-intricate, nice, and important. The general state of debtor and creditor; all the relations and consequences of price; the essential interests of trade and industry; the value of all property; the whole income, both of the State and of individuals, are liable to be sensibly influenced, beneficially or otherwise, by the judicious or injudicious regulation of this interesting object."Hamilton examined all aspects of such an establishment in an extremely detailed report, which was the basis for the Mint Act of April 2, 1792. In his report, Hamilton considered numerous particulars:"1st. What ought to be the nature of the money unit of the United States?"2nd. What the proportion between gold and silver, if coins of both metals are to be established?"3rd. What the proportion and composition of alloy in each kind?"4th. Whether the expense of coinage shall be defrayed by the Government, or out of the material itself?"5th. What shall be the number, denominations, sizes, and devices of the coins?"6th. Whether foreign coins shall be permitted to be current or not; if the former, at what rate, and for what period?"When finally prepared and enacted The Mint Act of April 2, 1792 specified that the copper cents were "each to be the value of the one hundredth part of a dollar, and to contain eleven penny-weights of copper." The weight of 11 pennyweight, or 264 grains, heavier than the brass Continental Currency coins. Congress reduced the weight to 208 grains when they amended the Mint Act on January 14, 1793 in what may be one of the shortest Acts ever passed:"Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That every cent shall contain two hundred and eight grains of copper, and every half cent shall contain one hundred and four grains of copper; and that so much of the act, entitled "An act establishing a mint, and regulating the coins of the United States," as respects the weight of cents and half cents, shall be, and the same is hereby repealed."The first copper coins struck at the fledgling U.S. Mint in Philadelphia were the Chain cents, including this example. The 1890-O is plentiful in well-worn grades through lower Uncirculated levels, claiming an average certified grade that barely crosses the MS62 threshold despite a mintage of 10.7 million coins. This Louisiana branch mint issue is rare in Premium Gem condition. This strike and condition rarity is a very appealing representative of this challenging New Orleans Mint Morgan dollar issue. Central high point detail ranges from bold (obverse) to sharp (reverse), and the coin is free of the extreme softness seen in these areas on most examples of the issue. Both sides shimmer with radiant satin luster, and the surfaces are brilliant with an exceptionally smooth texture. The rarity of the 1890-O as a sharply struck Gem has long been recognized by numismatic writers. Wayne Miller (The Morgan & Peace Dollar Textbook) states, "As with all of the 'O' mint dollars from 1887-1897, most specimens [of the 1890-O] are poorly struck." Q. David Bowers (1993) writes: "Most Mint State coins are weakly struck..." Due to this feature, the typical Uncirculated example is confined to lower certified grades through MS-64+, even if the surfaces are lustrous and overall smooth. A noteworthy departure from the norm, this premium quality Gem would do justice to the finest Morgan dollar set. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. This 1917 $1 note is the last large-sized legal tender bank note ever issued. It's referred to as a "Horseblanket Note," due to their large size. The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art. The nicest one we have ever been able to bring to auction. These notes are usually found in xf and lower. Finding higher grade ones can be a challenge.

This stunningly and colorfully toned example exhibits yellow-orange patina that yields to bolder Blue-gold iridescence at the borders. Sharply struck in virtually all areas, both sides are appreciably lustrous with a pleasingly smooth appearance in hand. Walter Breen divined a mintage figure of 1,200 circulation strikes for the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar decades ago. While the first Reeded Edge half dollars were struck in November, Robert W. Julian has described "technical difficulties" that "were serious enough that [Chief Coiner Adam Eckfeldt] would be forced to return to the screw press and lettered-edge half dollars." Given the population of surviving 1836 Reeded Edge half dollars today, Julian has estimated that the mintage was actually closer to 5,000 pieces. Between the legendarily elusive Small Eagle half dollars of 1796 and 1797 and the scarce Philadelphia Mint dates between 1879 and 1890, no other half dollar issue approaches the low mintage of the 1836 Reeded Edge. The number struck was just a fraction of such well regarded dates as 1794 and 1815, without the relatively high survivorship and large Proof mintages of the final decade of the Liberty Seated design. Beyond its evident historical importance, the 1836 Reeded Edge has always been admired as a rarity. For most of the 19th century, this issue was deemed a pattern, too rare to have been issued for circulation. While listed in J. Hewitt Judd's United States Pattern, Trial, and Experimental Pieces as Judd-57, a listing that remains in modern editions out of a sense of tradition, the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar is now acknowledged as a regular issue coin. The vast majority of survivors show significant wear, Choice AU survivors such as this scarce and always in demand. Additionally, this is far and away the most beautifully toned example we have ever seen in hand or in any listing. ***Auction Highlight*** 1861-p Gold Liberty Double Eagle $20 Graded ms64+ By SEGS. The beginning of the nation's breakup began in December 1860 when South Carolina seceded from the Union. Six other states would do so in the early months of 1861 in protest to the Morrill Tariff and the election of Abraham Lincoln as the 16th president. These seven states joined together to form the Confederate States of America. An action like this could only provoke and panic the banking and moneyed interests of New York and the East Coast, of course. Depositors inundated the mints with bullion for coinage into gold (compare mintage figures on all the gold denominations to the results from 1860). Many double eagles, however, were sent overseas once hostilities broke out at Fort Sumter to purchase War materials. With a war on, and military suppliers rubbing their hands in anticipation of war profits, the game was on to send goods to America, both North and South, to be paid for by means of these precious metal double eagles. This is one of the finest 1861 twenties I have ever seen. An exceptionally bright example of the first, or No Motto Type exhibiting mint glow on rich gold surfaces with nothing to censor it from its assigned near-Gem grade. The luster presents a satiny quality throughout. Soft-edged devices and lettering throughout the centers are typical on this issue, as commonly seen; however, a small percentage of this year's production is found with enough convincing detail to be called "bold" and this is one such coin. Marks and abrasions are virtually non-existent with nothing worthy of singular mention on either side. Watch for spirited bidding when this lot crosses the block. I have included 2 other examples for your comparison, an ms65 thar realized $66,125 in 2011 and an ms64 that realized $22,325 in 2014. I think ours is nicer than the ms64 and comparable to the ms65. I will further note that The smooth even Satin like surfaces of the fields suggest this is a non-seawater, original near-Gem double eagle. Rare as such, we note hundreds of 1861 twenties were brought up from the S.S. Republic -- but most of those graded AU58 through MS62. A true numismatic rarity. In the top 10 surviving examples. Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Mid 1800's Philadelphia Token H.Tromenner Phila Grades Choice AU. Up for Auction is a Two Scruples Apothecary token made by H. Troemner. Henry Troemner (1809–1873) was a German-American entrepreneur. He started the Henry Troemner Company, known today as Troemner Inc. The company produced balances and scales.Troemner immigrated to the United States in 1832 and settled initially in New York City, then, by 1843, Philadelphia. He began making scales and weights in a partnership in 1840, and then established his own company in 1844. He was commissioned by the United States Mint in Philadelphia to make their balances, which he did so well that he was invited to make the bullion balances for the Department of Treasury. He later made scales for the Mexican Mint, Assay Office in New York, and the San Francisco Mint.According to Ernest Child, Troemner was probably was the first American manufacturer to follow the French mathematician Gilles Personnel de Roberval's balance design. This is distinguished by the load being superimposed on the beam, rather than suspended from the beam, and allowed faster weighing's.[1]After his death in 1873 his wife Catherine inherited the business, which was kept in the family until incorporating in 1955.

1870's US Fractional Currency 50¢ Fourth Issue Fr-1376 Grades f, fine. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number. William Meredith is pictured on the front.

1865 US Fractional Currency 3c Third Issue fr-1226 Washingon Grades vf++. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art. The nicest one we have ever been able to bring to auction.

The strike is typical for this challenging issue, both sides minimally circulated with appreciable luster remaining. Alone among New Orleans Mint issues in the three-dollar gold series, the 1854-O was produced to the extent of 24,000 pieces. This is a generous total for the type, but attrition through circulation was high and of the 1,000 or so coins believed extant most grade EF or lower. This is a noteworthy Choice AU whose significance is further enhanced by the extreme rarity of true Mint State survivors. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

1864 $50 Confederate States of America Richmond CSA Bank Note T-66 Grades xf. After the Civil War broke out in 1861, the newly established Confederate government began to issue it's own money as legal tender to the citizens of the South. The gamble was that if the South won the war, the money would be redeemable. The 1st note from the Government of the Confederate States of America was issued in April of 1861. From then on, notes were issued on through 1864. Almost every Confederate note was painstakingly hand signed and numbered. It is not uncommon for these notes to have uneven, or rough borders since scissors or shears were used to hastily cut the sheets of notes apart.

But it is far rarer than many casual observers may realize. Across the entire decade, only the 1841-O has a lower mintage than the 1844 (2,500 coins), but the Philadelphia issue prevails as the rarer of the two. PCGS accurately estimates that only 50 to 75 examples are known in all grades. Of these, the present piece is both the fourth-finest and one of only four coins known that are Uncirculated. Housed in a SEGS holder, this mildly abraded, sharp Condition Census coin displays satiny orange-gold luster. Eye appeal exceeds expectations for the issue. We have provided pictures of the other three mint state examples. Note the wing tips on our piece and on the three others. Ours is actually more full and I suspect the other three may actually be au58+ examples. Our coin, exhibits no wear at all on the wing tips! The Mint was gradually perfecting the art of proof coinage by the late 1870s, but few 19th century proofs can match the quality and eye appeal of this example. This incredible 1878 quarter graded PR67 displays undeniable elements of contrast, especially on the reverse, where the richly frosted devices seem to float on deeply reflective fields. Teal Green graces the obverse center with purplish-blue iridescence near the rim, while the reverse exhibits less intense color, predominantly at the center right. The strike and preservation are equally impeccable. It is the Briggs 4-D Variety which exhibits a die lump at the base of Liberty's staff, while the reverse reveals a die lump in the middle of the horizontal shield lines. Struck in the year the Morgan (or "Bland," as it was known at the time) dollar was introduced, the 1878 proof Seated quarters were struck to the extent of just 800 coins. Ranked #16 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, the Series 1899 Black Eagle note is from an era when paper money was backed by precious silver, as the issue bears the statement ONE SILVER DOLLAR PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND. It doesn’t take much work to figure out the nickname of the 1899 $1 silver certificate. A quick glance shows three vignettes, an eagle, Ulysses S Grant, and Abraham Lincoln. Somewhere along the way the collecting world decided that this note should be called a “black eagle.” The name has stuck. This coin represents the BD-1 variety, called the "Spike Shield" variety because of a die line that extends from the left corner of the shield to the eagle's wing. All three die varieties for 1802 use the same obverse die, which was traditionally thought to be an overdate. However, most modern researchers believe the artifact connecting the ball of the 2 to the diagonal is just a die line, rather than an under type digit. The reverse die was subsequently used to strike the JR-3 variety of the 1802 dime and the JR-2 variety of the 1803 dime. The BD-1, has a surviving population of 90-120 examples in all grades. Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

1864 $5 Confederate Note, T69 Graded cu61 By PMG. From the seventh and last issue of Confederate currency, these bills were authorized in February 1864. When these $5 notes were issued over 150 years ago, each one was individually signed and numbered. This $5 Confederate note has a pink overprint and a picture of the Virginia State Capitol in the center. In the lower right corner of the note is a picture of C.G. Memminger. This note was printed on plain paper with pink and black ink on the front and blue ink on the back.

***Auction Highlight*** 1788 New Jersey Head Left Maris 49.F Colonial Cent 1c Graded ag3 By SEGS. Up for Auction is the ultra rare 1788 New Jersey Left Facing Horse Cent. There are 3 die varieties for the rare left facing horse, and this is the Maris 49-f, ultra scarce. I am now going to quote, verbatim, from the description of the maris 49-f from the University of Notre Dame, colonial currency project website. If you want to read more about this after my paragraph, you can go to their website.“ This is one of three horse facing left varieties. Traditionally these were attributed to Goadsby working independently at Rahway after obtaining a legal writ against Cox on November 6, 1787. It was assumed he continued minting coins until the middle of 1788. However, Hodder has recently shown that Goadsby transported the Rahway press with some copper ingots and blank planchets and probably some dies to Walter Mould's Morristown mint (by December 1787). The press remained there until the start of February 1788 when it was send back to Rahway presumably with the dies (Cox was out of jail by this time). In March the unused copper was returned. A few months thereafter (in June), due to continued legal troubles between Goadsby and Cox, the man who had secured their bond, Matthias Ogden, obtained all the Rahway equipment which he took to his home on Water Street in Elizabethtown, where he started minting coppers until 1790. Based on this newly discovered scenario about the only person who could not have minted these coins is the person they have been traditionally assigned to, since he did not have a coin press while Cox was in jail! Currently the mystery of the left facing coppers had not been solved.The obverse is the distinctive horse facing left. Note the plow is more complex than usual with two cross bars connecting the handles. Maris notes that the coulter is fashioned from a sword (the hilt is visible above the beam). Obverse 49 has a larger horse head than the other two varieties (obverses 50 and 51). Obverse 51 is distinctive in that it is on a smaller planchet and has the smallest sized head. Obverse 49 can be distinguished from 50 in that on obverse 49 there is much space between the end of the plow beam and the start of the legend (however the legend ends closer to the plow handles) while on obverse 50 the legend starts and ends very close to the plow. Obverse 49 is only combined with reverse f.Reverse f is found in combinations with obverses 49 and 50 as well as the horse facing right obverse 37. The shield on reverse f has left and right (dexter and sinister) points that are higher than the central point. The only similar reverse in this group is reverse g. They can be distinguished in that on reverse g the left (dexter) point is at the end stroke of the R while the right (sinister) point is directed towards the bottom curve of the S in the legend. On reverse f the points are at the first vertical stroke of the R and the star. Also, as Maris states, the stars are smaller on reverse f.”

1864 $50 Confederate States of America Richmond CSA Bank Note T-66 Grades xf details. After the Civil War broke out in 1861, the newly established Confederate government began to issue it's own money as legal tender to the citizens of the South. The gamble was that if the South won the war, the money would be redeemable. The 1st note from the Government of the Confederate States of America was issued in April of 1861. From then on, notes were issued on through 1864. Almost every Confederate note was painstakingly hand signed and numbered. It is not uncommon for these notes to have uneven, or rough borders since scissors or shears were used to hastily cut the sheets of notes apart.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

This 1917 $1 note is the last large-sized legal tender bank note ever issued. It's referred to as a "Horseblanket Note," due to their large size. The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art. The nicest one we have ever been able to bring to auction. These notes are usually found in xf and lower. Finding higher grade ones can be a challenge.

***Auction Highlight*** 1922 Large Size $10 Gold Certificate Fr-1173 Speelman/White Grades xf. It is hard to believe that large size ten dollar gold certificates were only issued in 1907 and 1922. The United States first printed gold certificates in the early 1860s. For some reason they never printed the ten dollar denomination until 1907. 1922 was the last year of the large size gold Certificate Currnecy. In 1928 paper money was changed to the size we are accustomed to seeing today. The portrait of Alexander Hamilton was used instead of the virtually unknown Michael Hillegas. Hillegas was the first treasurer of The United States. Perhaps if Hillegas had died in a duel then he would be better remembered today. All 1922 $10 gold certificates were signed by Speelman and White. Interestingly enough, there is a small variety for the series. Some notes have smaller serial numbers than the standard numbers. The small serial number notes do command a slight premium, especially in higher grades.

***Auction Highlight*** 1855-p Gold Dollar $1 Graded Select+ Unc By USCG. The small 12.7 mm diameter of the Type I gold dollar brought about a few complaints of it being easy to lose, like the silver trime. To address this, Longacre enlarged the diameter to 14.3 mm, but he also completely revised the design, replacing it with an Indian design with a crown of feathers resembling his design on the newly introduced three-dollar gold piece. He also moved the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA to the obverse from the reverse. The reverse laurel wreath was replaced with the cereal wreath Longacre employed on the three-dollar denomination and that was later adopted for the Flying Eagle cent. Even with these design changes, challenges faced Mint personnel when striking the coins. Because the weight of the denomination remained unchanged, the coins were made slightly thinner. The obverse Indian head bust of Liberty was in too high a relief for the thinner planchets, and most examples displayed poor definition in and around the centers. To further complicate matters, the dies often clashed early and frequently during press runs, and many survivors exhibit numerous pronounced clash marks. Bowers estimates 90% of all 1854 Type II dollars bear such clash marks on one or both sides. These striking deficiencies prompted the third and final redesign in 1856, enlarging the bust and flattening its relief profile. The honey-gold luster is especially smooth and satiny on this Plus-graded coin. No major abrasions distract from the eye appeal -- only a few hairlines on each side prevent a finer grade. Offered is an exceptional condition rarity for this often overlooked issue in the early San Francisco Mint Morgan dollar series. A lovely Gem Mint State coin, both sides are highly lustrous with only the lightest silver and champagne-gold iridescence. Otherwise satin to softly frosted in finish, the fields reveal modest semi-reflectivity. It is fully struck, as typical for the issue, but far smoother and more carefully preserved than the vast majority of 1883-S silver dollars.Although often overshadowed by the 1884-S, the 1883-S is highly elusive in Mint State. While the mintage was 6,250,000 pieces, the 1883-S is one of the few Morgan dollars that saw active circulation beginning in the 19th century. Indeed, worn survivors are available with ease. On the other hand, Mint State survivors are scarce in today's market. While many examples emerged from federal holdings in the 1950s and 1960s, these were quickly absorbed by contemporary collectors. No other significant quantities were found apart from a partial bag in the estate of LaVere Redfield. The coins from both the Redfield hoard and the Federal holdings seemed to average about MS-63. The 1922 $50 gold certificate is a simple design with lots of white space, designed to draw the eye to engraved elements that were present, in keeping with the design philosophy of the time. A large portrait of Ulysses S. Grant is the focal point of the face flanked by gold design elements including a 50 protector, serial numbers, and the Treasury seal. The back printed in a gold-orange color has a simple denomination counter. The gold overprints are boldly printed while the orange printed back design retains its intended brilliance. The Series of 1922 notes have an inscription, not present on the earlier issues, in the left field, "THIS CERTIFICATE IS A LEGAL TENDER / IN THE AMOUNT THEREOF IN PAYMENT OF ALL / DEBTS AND DUES, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE / ACTS OF MARCH 14, 1900, AS AMENDED / ON DECEMBER 24, 1919." The back is the same design as the preceding type. The orange-gold color tended to fade. Today, notes with bright backs are worth more than those with faded color, regardless of the grade. The print run of this variety was 5,184,000. The surviving population is in the hundreds, with most showing Heavy circulation and fading.

The third curl from the top wraps down with its point touching the fourth curl, diagnostic for this obverse, which was shared with three reverse dies. Not only is this a late die state, but it is among the finer known examples of the variety, certainly among the top dozen or so survivors. In addition to heavy clash marks and die flow lines in the left obverse field, additional clash marks are visible in the right obverse field, above Liberty's head, and below the bust. This die state is somewhat more advanced than the Reiver coin, described as the usual die state for the variety. Pleasing surfaces have an attractive blend of medium gray and light gold color. There are no noticeable adjustment marks, and only a few insignificant scratches or scrapes on the surfaces. It is nicely centered as usual, with full and wide borders on both sides. This 1882 $20 Gold Certificate, an incredible condition rarity, displays nearly perfect centering with boardwalk margins framing its grandiose design.This design ranks #95 in 100 Greatest American Currency Notes by Q. David Bowers and David M. Sundman. The face depicts the recently martyred (1881) President James Garfield, while the back shows an eagle clutching a lightning bolt, with two cable-laying ships in the distance, titled Ocean Telegraph, engraved by George D. Baldwin. A portrait of Garfield also appears on the $5 National Bank Notes of 1882; a close copy mirror-imaged. The inscription "GOLD COIN" is in the "shingle"-style lettering layout. Gold coins, absent from commerce since the waning days of December 1861, achieved parity with Legal Tender and other paper on December 17, 1878. Accordingly, the Series of 1882 Gold Certificates could be exchanged at par.The Atlantic telegraph, as it was best known, was completed in the summer of 1858 amidst great celebrations on both sides of the Atlantic. In New York City a grand display was held in the streets and within the Crystal Palace. Conceived by Cyrus W. Field, the connection made possible fast communications between Europe and America, with great implications for news and financial information. The transmission was not instantaneous, however. A message of 99 words from Queen Victoria to President Andrew Johnson took 67 minutes to transmit. This was deemed satisfactory, far eclipsing the sending of news by steamship. There was trouble, signals were often interrupted or incomplete, and the last clear message was received on September 1. Soon afterward, the project was abandoned. Not until after the Civil War was an effective connection made. In 1866 the S.S. Great Eastern laid new cable and repaired some cable laid in 1865, achieving the success that is honored on this note design. The print run of F-1178 (W-2220) was 16,344,000. PMG estimate that about 525 to 550 survive in All Grades

This 1917 $1 note is the last large-sized legal tender bank note ever issued. It's referred to as a "Horseblanket Note," due to their large size. The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art. The nicest one we have ever been able to bring to auction.

Silky smooth surfaces are bathed in full, billowy mint frost. Brilliant apart from subtle sandy-pink highlights that appear to drift toward the borders. At 19,963,000 circulation strikes produced, the 1886 boasts the highest mintage for a silver dollar of any design type produced up to that point in time. Thanks to the release of large numbers of examples from government storage throughout much of the early to mid-20th century, the 1886 is one of the most common Morgan dollars in Mint State. As with so many issues in this series, however, MS-68 is the grade level at which the word "rare" becomes applicable for the 1886. Among the finest examples that we have ever had the privilege of bringing to auction, this virtually pristine beauty would do justice to any high quality collection. $100 Confederate bill, 1864 Lucy Holcombe Pickens, the Queen of the Confederacy Grades vf++. Lucy Holcombe Pickens (1832–1899), known as the “Queen of the Confederacy,” is the only woman to be featured on currency issued by a Confederate state. Pickens was born on her family’s planation in La Grange, Tennessee. She attended La Grange Female Academy and, at the age of 14 with her older sister, Anna Eliza, began attending school at the Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Her family moved to Marshall, Texas in 1848, and their new home, Wyalucing Plantation, was built with enslaved labor between 1848–1850. In the years that followed, the family remained staunch supporters of slavery and southern politics. Lucy seems to have been well-traveled for a young woman of the mid-19th century, and on trips throughout the south she met her future husband, Senator Francis Wilkinson Pickens. Senator Pickens was a South Carolina native, two-time widower, and the son of a former governor. He and Lucy married at Wyalucing on April 26, 1858.That same year, with Lucy's support, Pickens was appointed United States ambassador to Russia. The family moved oversees where Lucy became a favorite of Czar Alexander II and Czarina Maria Alexandrovna. Prior to the start of the Civil War, Pickens resigned his post, and he and Lucy returned to South Carolina. Lucy became known as the “Queen of the Confederacy” after her husband was elected Governor of South Carolina in 1860. Long admired for her beauty and financial support of the Confederacy, Lucy was featured on four different Confederate bills during the Civil War. She supported the Confederate cause by selling jewels given to her in Russia, an endeavor that helped outfit the Confederate Army unit named after her — the Lucy Holcombe Legion. This particular style of bill was issued two years after her husband left office, a testimony to her continuing popularity. It would take more than 152 years for the U.S. Treasury to prominently feature women on currency notes. On April 20, 2016, the Treasury announced that Harriet Tubman, leading abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the U.S. Army during the Civil War, would replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill beginning in 2020. The reverse of the $10 bill will also pay tribute in 2020 to the 1913 historic march for suffrage that ended at the steps of the Treasury building. Images of Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul will be featured. The reverse of the new $5 bill will honor people and events at the Lincoln Memorial that helped shape U.S. history including opera singer Marian Anderson and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Fully original surfaces exhibit a blend of vivid reddish-orange luster and original gray-brown iridescence, the reverse a bit more vivid overall. Both sides are equally smooth with a bold strike from the rims to the centers.This curious Indian cent variety features the base of an errant numeral 1 protruding from the neck of Miss Liberty just above the pearls in her necklace. The discovery of this variety is attributed to dealer Jack Beyer according to the Snow reference, where the following is noted: "It was assumed early on that this variety would be found in high grades due to the general availability of this date. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number. William Meredith is pictured on the front.
