*Star Note* 1953 $2 Red Seal United States Note Grades Select AU. When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes.

1929 $5 National Currency 'The Broad St. National Bank Of Trenton, NJ' Type 2 Grades vf++ 1929 $5 National Currency 'The Broad St. National Bank Of Trenton, NJ' Type 2 Grades vf++

1929 $5 National Currency 'The Broad St. National Bank Of Trenton, NJ' Type 2 Grades vf++

Lot #75 (Sale Order 57 of 693)

1929 $5 National Currency 'The Broad St. National Bank Of Trenton, NJ' Type 2 Grades vf++. Series of 1929 national bank notes come in two varieties. Collectors call these type 1 and type 2 varieties. Type 1 1929 $5 national bank notes have a serial number that ends with the letter A. Type 2 1929 $5 national bank notes have a serial number that ends with a number. The charter number is also printed in brown ink twice on type 2 1929 $5 bills. Backed by bonds deposited with the Federal Government, this kind of money says “National Currency” at the top center of the note. These notes were issued by banks who received a Charter from the United States government allowing them to issue money. The Government Printing Office printed these notes with the same design except for the name of the banks, signatures of the bank officers and the Charter number. National Currency notes were made from 1863 to 1929. These notes were a way of creating confidence in an always shaky banking system. Member banks were required to deposit bonds with the government. The bank could then issue currency equal to 90% of the amount of the bonds. The financial panic of 1929 destroyed many of the National Banks and put an end to this system. There were more than 14,000 banks that issued National Currency and there are large numbers of avid collectors. The 1929 issue was the only “small size” issue, that is to distinguish from the “horse blanket” size notes of years previous to 1929.

***Auction Highlight*** 1896-o Vam 23 Morgan Dollar $1 Graded Select Unc By USCG. Up for Auction is a Key Date 1896-o. Silvery and untoned over minimally abraded surfaces, this appealing coin is worthy of a strong bid. A true condition rarity among Morgan dollars, the 1896-O is readily obtainable in worn condition yet scarce to rare in all Mint State grades. When we further consider that most Uncirculated survivors of this 4,900,000-piece issue are poorly struck with inferior luster, the present offering is sure to catch the eye of the discerning Morgan dollar collector. Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 471 $10 Grades xf Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 471 $10 Grades xf

Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 471 $10 Grades xf

Lot #85 (Sale Order 65 of 693)

Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 471 $10 Grades xf. The second type of military payment certificate issued by the United States is known as the series 471. They were only used by our troops for about a year. March 10th, 1947 was their introduction date and they were redeemed on March 22nd, 1948. Military payment certificates, or MPC, were a form of currency used to pay U.S. military personnel in certain foreign countries. They were used in one area or another from a few months after the end of World War II until a few months after the end of U.S. participation in the Vietnam War – from 1946 until 1973. MPC utilized layers of line lithography to create colorful banknotes that could be produced cheaply. Fifteen series of MPCs were created. However, only 13 series were issued. The remaining two were largely destroyed, although some examples remain. Among the 13 released series a total of 94 notes are recognized.

1935A $1 Silver Certificate North Africa, Signatures of Julian & Morgenthau Grades Choice AU/BU Slid

Lot #105 (Sale Order 80 of 693)

1935A $1 Silver Certificate North Africa, Signatures of Julian & Morgenthau Grades Choice AU/BU Slider. 1935a $1 Silver Certificate North Africa, Signatures of Julian & Morgenthau. It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Were the Nazis under Field Marshall Rommel preparing a massive push through North Africa? If they did, and succeeded, they could use the millions of dollars in currency the seized to buy war material. To thwart this, these Silver Certificates were sent to North Africa. Each has a yellow seal on the front. If the Nazis did succeed to over run our expeditiary force, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "North Africa" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.

1929 $20 National Currency Type 1 'The First National Bank Of Santa Ana, CA' Grades vf++ 1929 $20 National Currency Type 1 'The First National Bank Of Santa Ana, CA' Grades vf++

1929 $20 National Currency Type 1 'The First National Bank Of Santa Ana, CA' Grades vf++

Lot #115 (Sale Order 90 of 693)

1929 $20 National Currency Type 1 'The First National Bank Of Santa Ana, CA' Grades vf++. Series of 1929 national bank notes come in two varieties. Collectors call these type 1 and type 2 varieties. Type 1 1929 $20 national bank notes have a serial number that ends with the letter A. Type 2 1929 $20 national bank notes have a serial number that ends with a number. The charter number is also printed in brown ink twice on type 2 1929 $20 bills.

1992 Columbus 500th Anniversary Solid Silver Ships of Discovery Medals Set Over 2oz of silver

Lot #128 (Sale Order 99 of 693)

1992 Columbus 500th Anniversary Solid Silver Ships of Discovery Medals Set Over 2oz of silver. Up for Auction is a Set that was mired in Controversy. The set was commissioned by “The Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Commission”, a temporary federal agency that was dogged by controversy since they commissioned the medals. The Commission was attacked by the Representative Frank Annunzio (D-Ill.), the legendary "coin czar" of Capitol Hill. Annunzio felt the coins which were authorized by a federal department, albeit temporary, would be mistaken for the coins Annunzio had shepherded through the US min’s official Commemorative program. Annunzio and the Mints Lawyers put such pressure on the commission that they eventually limited the number of medals to just 500 sets. This is the first time I have ever seen a set in hand, or been able to bring it to auction.

***Auction Highlight*** PCGS 1884 Morgan Dollar $1 Graded pr64 By PCGS. 1884 Morgan Dollar PR64 PCGS. Richly toned in a blend of variegated copper and sandy-gray shades, this handsome specimen reveals more vivid blue, gold, lilac and apricot undertones as the surfaces dip into a light. Razor sharp in striking detail with carefully preserved surfaces, there is much to recommend this conditionally rare Gem to advanced specimen type and date collectors. From a mintage of 875 Proofs A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

Lot #143 (Sale Order 113 of 693)

***Auction Highlight*** 1879-p TOP POP! Morgan Dollar $1 Graded ms67 By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION - Up For Auction is a 1879-p Morgan Dollar ms67 SEGS. Production of silver dollars was front and center in 1879 with more than 25 million coins struck, including nearly 15 million at Philadelphia. Examples are plentiful in all grades up to Gem MS65, but superb examples are seldom seen. Like many dates in the Morgan dollar series, large quantities of this issue have survived due to long-term Treasury storage, although most were released in the 1950s, prior to the massive distribution of silver dollars in the early 1960s. This piece is a sharply struck superb Gem with frosty silver luster and full mint brilliance. There is no evidence of toning on either side. Tied for finest known. We have included another ms67 for your comparison. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

*HIGHLIGHT OF ENTIRE AUCTION* 1852-o Gold Liberty Double Eagle $20 Graded ms61+ By SEGS (fc)

Lot #148 (Sale Order 118 of 693)

***Auction Highlight*** 1852-o Gold Liberty Double Eagle $20 Graded ms61+ By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION - Up for Auction is one of only 13 surviving Uncirculated 1852-o Double Eagles. The fields of this outstanding New Orleans Mint double eagle offers flashy Mint Luster and a semi reflective appearance. Pale honey-olive shades enhance rose-orange patina. This impressive coin is well preserved for an 1852-O twenty, has outstanding eye appeal, and ranks among the finest known. Even though the New Orleans Mint had produced double eagles in quantity in both 1850 and 1851, the coiners were still working out difficulties found in producing such a large gold coin with precision. Emphasis seemed to be more on quantity than quality, leaving many with uneven or weak strikes. In the end, 190,000 specimens came off the Mint's presses, which helped to make this one of the more readily available of all New Orleans double eagles. As with most gold coins produced in the Antebellum South, these coins entered circulation where they would remain. Numismatics in America was still in its infancy in the early 1850s and there was essentially no interest in mintmarks, which when combined with the denomination's high face value meant that few examples of the issue were intentionally saved. The Civil War disrupted monetary circulation patterns drastically, causing many to be used for overseas commerce or otherwise withdrawn from domestic use. When double eagle holdings from overseas started to be repatriated back to these shores in the 20th century, most surviving specimens bore evidence of their extended storage in large sacks, as well as the years of commercial use in the mid to late 19th century. It is estimated that only 400 to 600 examples of the 1852-O double eagle can be accounted for today, most in the VF and EF range, with a very small number of coins at the AU level or above. This comparative availability at the middle circulated grade levels has made the issue especially popular for type collectors seeking just a single New Orleans double eagle. This popularity, in turn, has placed quite a bit of competitive pressure for the few examples known at the AU level and above. This situation is even more pronounced at the Mint State level, where at best only about a dozen Uncirculated examples of the issue may still be extant. I have included an ms61 which is currently for sale at collectors corner for $53,550, and an ms62 that is also available for purchase at collectors corner for $77,500. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

The 1901 Morgan dollar is much more elusive than its mintage of more than 6.9 million pieces would suggest, especially in high grade. Most coins not released into circulation were probably melted in 1918, under the provisions of the Pittman Act. This impressive MS62 example is nicely detailed and highly lustrous, with lightly marked surfaces that show a few hints of light toning. Some weakness in the centers is usual for the issue. *HIGHLIGHT OF ENTIRE AUCTION* 1833 Large Date BD-1 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle $5 Graded ms63 detail

Lot #166 (Sale Order 136 of 693)

***Auction Highlight*** 1833 Large Date BD-1 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle $5 Graded ms63 details By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION - Up for Auction is the Ultra rare 1833 Large Date BD-1 Capped Bust $5 Gold - A substantial mintage of 193,630 Capped Head Left half eagles was accomplished in 1833, with three die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the BD-1 variety, with the Large Date obverse. The actual size difference of the digits in the Small Date and Large Date variants is just barely distinguishable, but the style of the number punches is distinctly different. The 3s on the Large Date have pronounced knobs and the 8 is more blocklike rather than the italic (or belted) style seen on the Small Date. The BD-1 is a rare variety, with a surviving population of just 35-45 examples in all grades, but it is still seen more often than the Small Date varieties. An article by Paul Gilkes in the June 26, 2000 issue of Coin World deals directly with the rarity of the 1829 half eagle, but the explanation applies just as effectively to the 1833:"The main reason the 1829 Capped Head, Large Planchet half eagle is so difficult to obtain is that it and many of its predecessors fell victim to the great melts, a byproduct of the flood of Mexican and Peruvian silver. The influx of silver on the world market compared to gold supplies lowered the silver price, but appeared as an unstoppable increase in the value of gold reckoned in Mexican dollars. The result was widespread hoarding and melting of older gold coins when their bullion value exceeded their face value by enough to warrant a profit over the cost of melting. Tens of thousands of half eagles and other gold denominations of recent vintage were melted soon after their production and reclaimed ... "As a result, few people in the 1820s and 1830s ever saw or handled a U.S. quarter eagle or half eagle. The few that did survive are often encountered in relatively high grades. For the 1833, the average grade is 57.6. This coin is noticeably finer at the MS63 Details level. A bit softly struck on the obverse stars and the left portion of the eagle's wing, the surfaces otherwise are bright and the fields semi reflective. Even, light reddish-yellow color is seen over each side of this rarely seen Capped Head issue. I have included an ms64 for your comparison. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION - Up For Auction is a 1849-d $2 ½ Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle ms62 SEGS. Variety 11-M, confirmed by the high 1 in the date. The 1849-D (10,945 coins produced) is extremely rare in Mint State grades. With just 15 coins known in Mint State. The present example displays overall sharp definition. In fact, there are really no ill-defined features, and the orange-gold surfaces show appreciable brightness in the fields. Scattered abrasions are consistent with the MS62 grade level, and the only noteworthy pedigree marker is a stray mark in the upper left obverse. Tied for Finest Known. We have included another ms62 for your comparison. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

*HIGHLIGHT OF ENTIRE AUCTION* 1892-p TOP POP Morgan Dollar $1 Graded ms66 By SEGS (fc)

Lot #168 (Sale Order 138 of 693)

***Auction Highlight*** 1892-p TOP POP Morgan Dollar $1 Graded ms66 By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION - Up for Auction is a 1892-p Morgan Dollar ms66 SEGS. Silver dollar production was markedly reduced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1892, with a reported mintage of just over 1 million pieces. For the first time, all three branch mints struck more Morgan dollars than the Philadelphia facility in 1892. Apparently, the Mint was only striking silver dollars on demand, rather than striving to produce the unneeded millions of coins mandated by the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in earlier years. The 1892 Morgan dollar is very rare in MS66 condition. This delightful premium Gem exhibits well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of blending on the hair strands above Liberty's ear. The impeccably preserved, creamy surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster on both sides and eye appeal is terrific. Tied for finest known. We have included another ms66 for your comparison. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

1928 $10 Gold Certificate, Signatures Woods/Mellon Fr-2400 Grades vf+

Lot #169 (Sale Order 139 of 693)

1928 $10 Gold Certificate, Signatures Woods/Mellon Fr-2400 Grades vf+. Alexander Hamilton is the central subject of this scarce $10 gold note, issued because of a change in the size of United States currency beginning with all series dated 1928. This change in the size of America’s currency came about from a study that had determined that printing smaller currency would save the government a hefty amount of money in production cost. Because of the nature of gold certificates – each one accompanied the deposit of gold coins – they are somewhat scarce to begin with, as gold is far more scarce than silver. Add to that the decision to drop the gold standard by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, thus making owning gold coin (or notes promising gold coin) illegal, and you end up with a series of notes that was printed, then recalled less than six years after their initial issue. Many of the notes were destroyed when turned in, and few of them survived. Fortunately for collectors, the restriction for owning gold certificates as collectibles was repealed by Treasury Secretary C. Douglas Dillon in 1964, but the damage had been done to the stockpiles of said notes. Not many remain of the millions that had originally been issued prior to the depression.

***Auction Highlight*** 1897-o Morgan Dollar $1 Graded Select Unc By USCG. Up for Auction is a Key Date 1897-o. Silvery and untoned over minimally abraded surfaces, this appealing coin is worthy of a strong bid. A true condition rarity among Morgan dollars, the 1897-O is readily obtainable in worn condition yet scarce to rare in all Mint State grades. When we further consider that most Uncirculated survivors of this 4,004,000-piece issue are poorly struck with inferior luster, the present offering is sure to catch the eye of the discerning Morgan dollar collector.

Lot #189 (Sale Order 158 of 693)

***Auction Highlight*** 1873 Closed 3 Two Cent Piece 2c Graded pr67 rb By SEGS. Up For Auction is a. 1873 Closed 3 Two Cent PR 67 Red-Brown SEGS. The Guide Book mintage of 600 pieces includes two varieties of the 1873 proof-only issue -- the Closed 3 proofs, which are considered originals, as well as proofs with an Open 3 logotype, which allegedly are restrikes. (It is possible that the Open 3 coins were struck in 1873 as well.) This sparkling, Plus-graded Red and Brown Premium Gem radiates eye appeal. A speckling of brick-red patina overlays reflective copper-orange fields and recesses on the obverse, while peach-gold and ruby-red shades occupy the reverse. The strike is impressively sharp, while the surfaces are free of any perceptible carbon. Tied for finest known in Red Brown. We have included a PR66+ example for your comparison A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

***Auction Highlight*** 1896-s Barber Quarter 25c Graded ms63 details By SEGS. The 1896-S Barber quarter is a low-mintage, key date, with a production total of just 188,039 pieces. The issue is scarce in grades above XF, and Mint State coins are nothing short of rare. This date is much more difficult to locate in Mint State grades than the vaunted 1913-S.The present coin is a delightful MS62+ specimen, with a razor-sharp strike, and lustrous, brilliant surfaces. Eye appeal is outstanding, and we expect spirited competition from series enthusiasts when this lot is called. A few minor light hairlines on the obverse explain the grad. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

***Auction Highlight*** Old Casino 50c Roll $10 In Halves "Horseshoe" Vegas 1934 Walker & 'D' Frankl

Lot #221 (Sale Order 183 of 693)

***Auction Highlight*** Old Casino 50c Roll $10 In Halves "Horseshoe" Vegas 1934 Walker & 'D' Franklin Ends. Up for Auction is a Consignment I have been talking about for the last few months, and I have finally secured. I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. I have put 3 in each of the Independence auctions. We estimate the rolls to be worth $700-$900 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

1934A $5 Silver Certificate North Africa, Signatures of Julian & Morgenthau Grades vf, very fine.

Lot #233 (Sale Order 195 of 693)

***Auction Highlight*** 1892-s Morgan Dollar $1 Graded au55 details By SEGS. One of the leading condition rarities in the long-running and ever-popular Morgan Dollar series, the 1892-S is an important find even at the au grade level. This is because the vast majority of survivors of this 1.2 million-piece delivery are well worn, with even AUs scarce by the standards of the type. Obviously, most coins from this issue were either placed into circulation at or near the time of striking or were destroyed under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act. With one of the lowest certified populations in Mint State for any Morgan Silver Dollar, this AU 55 Details graded example would be a great addition to your collection. There are also no outwardly distracting abrasions, but the surfaces have both hairlines which limit the grade to details as well as tons of original luster which shines forth. ***Auction Highlight*** 1863 US Fractional Currency 25c Second Issue fr-1283 Washington In Oval Grades Gem CU. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.
