Journal des Desmoiselles was published in Paris at 48 Rue Vivienne, and this set covers the years 1860, 1861, 1862, 1864, 1865 (two volumes), and 1867/68.

French "Surprise" Cornet with Double-Sided Bisque Head 1200/1500

13" (33 cm.) The silk-covered cornet with wonderful hand-painted scene has elaborately-carved bone handle and a silk ruffled cap which conceals a double-faced bisque head hidden inside the cornet. When the handle is moved up and down, the head pops up and down; one side depicts a handsome young lad with blue glass eyes and closed mouth, and the other side depicts the same lad with a crying expression and blue glass eyes. There is a ruffled collar at the neck and a silk bodice which attaches to the interior of the cone. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1880. Value Points: very rare and delightful surprise whose luxury details include hand-painted scene on cornet, bone carved handle and rare double-faced head with original cap and costume.

30" (76 cm.) x 15" x 13". The ochre-painted grocery store room with very fancily carved columns at each side has original wallpaper and ornamental floor paper designed to simulate tile. A floor-to-ceiling cabinet at back wall features two glass-front display cabinets that flank nine food and condiment drawers with original Hacker gilt metal drawer labels, and there is a pair of matching cabinets at the angled sides that have eight more labeled drawers. Carved architectural trim with gilt striping enhances the entire store highlighted by a faux-clock at the center back. Included is a matching counter, barrel, folding step ladder, brass and tin scale, and a German bisque store-keeper with sculpted moustache and original costume. Excellent original condition throughout, one glass replaced, one drawer pull lacking. Germany, circa 1890, Christian Hacker, the actual store is photographed in Kohler's book, Christian Hacker, page 188, described as "emblazoned with Art Nouveau ornaments". Ex-Margaret Lumia collection.

When wound, music plays, she turns her head and raises and lowers her hand while three different heads alternately pop up and down from behind the wall, as though waiting for a chance to snatch a bread loaf. A bisque doll with blue glass enamel eyes, dark eyeliner, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with pale accented lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate, carton torso and lower legs, metal rod upper arms and legs, metal hands, metal rods emanating from the torso are attached to a spoked wheeled base with platform that holds a woven basket of colorful silk flowers. When wound, the man "walks" along, pushing the flower cart in front and lifts and lowers his right arm as though offering flowers for sale, while his head turns side-to-side. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well, old repaint of metal cart. Comments: attributed to Vichy, circa 1865. Value Points: beautiful face, charming activity, original (very frail) silk costume.
