“Colorado Territory” moulding plane, 1860s. Lot #90 (Sale Order 90 of 253) This #14 hollow moulder, made by D.R. Barton & Co., of Rochester, N.Y., is stamped with a very unusual owner’s mark, at least for a moulding plane. It's circa 1861-1869, and the owner’s mark reads: MOUNTAIN CITY / C. T. (Colorado Territory) and was made with the postmark stamp of the Mountain City postmaster. Mountain City was a gold-mining town located between Blackhawk and Central City, but was overtaken & absorbed by those two casino gaming towns long ago. The mark appears on both the heel and the toe of the plane. A clear example of the postmark with an Oct. 14, 1861 date is taped to the side of the plane. Good. ($40-80).

Broadaxe with graphically-curved handle. Lot #103 (Sale Order 103 of 253) The only discernable mark on this otherwise common 11" broadaxe is a large number 7. “Champion” Mortising Machine, 1912 patent. Lot #105 (Sale Order 105 of 253) CHAMPION MORTISER / J. LEUKART MFG. / COLUMBUS OHIO / PATD SEPT 10 1912. Mortising machines like this one became popular in the early 1900s for drilling the mortises for door locks. They lost favor in the early 1920s, when electric tools began to replace them. This machine is adjustable for length and depth of cut, and the width of cut is determined by the bit diameter. In use, the bit drops down incrementally after it makes each forward and backward pass. It took me about 3 minutes of cranking to cut the example mortise on which it's displayed. It was a basket case when I got it. It's now in fine, restored condition. ($200-300).

Stanley No. 12 veneer scraper with toothing blade and a break. Lot #110 (Sale Order 110 of 253) Stanley No. 12 scraper plane has a toothing blade marked with the low S.W. logo and FINE (fine teeth on the blade). It would rate near Fine except for a break to one of the arms that connects the two halves of the blade holder. If I had half an hour I could repair that with a drill press and a steel pin; you could, too, and would have a nice user. Still, there's the toothing blade...buy it for the blade and throw the plane away, if you wish. ($40-75).

Doesn't look like it ever had a tool rest. Someone grabbed the main shaft with a pair of vise-grips to remove the stone's retaining nut, which resulted in some scars on the metal. 92% of the black & orange japanning remains. Runs smoothly, just as fast (or slow) as your little 'ol heart desires. Good+. ($45-90).

A very attractive English badger plane. Lot #125 (Sale Order 125 of 253) D. BROWN is the only (incuse) stamp on this badger plane and it's in the usual location for a maker's stamp. There are a couple of David Browns listed as planemakers in the very early 1800s in the Liverpool area, so maybe this panel raising plane was made by one of them. 17¼" long with a 2½" iron, skewed & canted as usual with these planes. Has a lignum vitae wear strip inlaid along the right bottom edge. This is a really attractive plane (despite a strip of pith between the toe & throat) with a marvelous patina. If you're tempted to try out a British badger plane in your shop, then this might be the one you're looking for. It feels good. Highly recommended. Good+ at the very least. ($60-150).

International CutAwl reciprocating electric cutter for thin materials. Lot #220 (Sale Order 219 of 253) INTERNATIONAL CUTAWL / TYPE K8 Serial #5511 is an electric reciprocating cutter for thin materials--wood, metal, & plastic. The head can be turned & locked in any of 4 positions, similar to a scrolling jig saw. The action is very fast and it cuts through thin material quite smoothly and rapidly. Literature on the Internet hails them as superior for patternwork. The nameplate lists patents from the 1920s & 1930s. This example is in Fine condition and comes in the original wood crate. The last vegetable slicer or cabbage cutter you'll ever have to buy. Lot #249 (Sale Order 248 of 253) Massive cabbage cutter (cabbage shredder, kraut cutter, vegetable slicer) is the largest most of us will ever lay eyes on. 18" wide x 45½" long. Unfortunately, it's missing the sliding box, but that's probably because you couldn't fit both of them in the same state at the same time. (The box is currently being used as a livestock corral in southern Kansas.) Just plain impressive. Good. ($60-120).

Stands about 15" high and is about 18" long not counting the crank handle. Has to be mounted to a sturdy surface in use 'cause there's a lot going on when it's in operation. Turn the handle one way to peel & core, then reverse direction to eject the core and prepare it to receive another. Has a welded repair to one component. Original green paint, which was Goodell's color. It needs to be cleaned and "tuned" a bit, but well worth it. You'll be through a bushel basket in no time just to watch all the parts moving at the same time. I'll call it Good. ($75-150).
