18TH CENTURY PRINT OF GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI Lot #3001 (Sale Order 1 of 416) Print of Giovanni Battista Piranesi's "Vedute di Piazza Navona sopra le rovine del Circo Agonale" likely from the late 18th century. Print itself measures 19 3/16 inches tall by 28 1/2 inches wide. Has intermittent light foxing throughout the print and has a 2 1/2 centimeter long tear on the rightmost middle part of the print. The frame it sits in measures approximately 30 1/2 inches tall by 39 3/16 inches wide.

MONUMENTAL TAINO GODDESS SKELETAL SCULPTURE Lot #3018 (Sale Order 17 of 416) A massive ax form depicting the Taino goddess Atabey with a skeletal infant. She is either nurturing or possibly delivering the child. This follows the intention of spiritual death and rebirth after taking the hallucinogen cohoba. This may be the largest ax of this kind known. It appears to be an early piece probably dating 900-1000AD. It was originally from a Dominican Republic collection I purchased in Miami. Usually small vessels like this were used to hold lime that was mixed with cohoba to neutralize stomach acids that effect the potency of cohoba. Made from a fine grained hard stone. PRECOLOMBIAN TAINO CONCH SHELL PUBERTY FID Lot #3030 (Sale Order 29 of 416) A long anthropo-zoomorphic puberty fid made from the columella of a conch shell. Nice detail. Puberty fids were used to ritually make young maidens accessible for reproduction. Figure may be a frog man. Frogs symbolize fertility so it’s likely. A band of interfacing triangles surround fid just under frogs feet. Triangles are a feminine symbol. Very rare for a 3 dimensional carving to appear on a shell fid. Length 7.8”. Arm and legs are one fluid entity. On reverse the arms and shoulder holes become bird heads while another bird head is evident as a head with beak. PRECOLUMBIAN TAINO MONUMENTAL ZEMI AXE HEAD Lot #3035 (Sale Order 34 of 416) Pre-Columbian Taino monumental Zemi axe head. This rare example features a substantial Zemi at the top of the axe. The facial pattern of large eyes and open mouth likely denotes Yucahu the primary male fertility god of the Taino. A huge band of deeply incised stylized bird heads and swirls dominate the center of the ax on both sides. Holes are drilled at the joints of the a ankles and wrists and represent spirit portals, soft spots where spirits enter and leave the body. The bottom edge is a little rough but does not detract from this impressive piece. There is a solid, naturally occurring linear inclusion on one side, part of the stones structure. Quite heavy. Made of magnetite. Length 10 inches long by 8.5 inches wide. Purchased from Pre-Columbian art dealer Robert Sonin at the New York Pier show in the late 1980s. The bottom of the plate is marked with the Allach symbol. The twisted green runes are the official logo of Obersturmbannführer-SS Karl Diebitch. This plate is in Bavarian "regal" style. It is marked with a Führeradler and is in 22-karat gold leaf. Plate has a few intermittent blemishes on the bottom but is in overall good condition. This lot has a reserve.
