US WWII FP-45 Liberator Pistol .45ACP Lot #1018 (Sale Order 20 of 829) Arguably the cheapest gun produced by any major combatant of WWII, this smooth bore, single shot, sheet steel pistol was originally intended to be air dropped into occupied countries to give the population there a means to fight back against German occupation. Around a million of these pistols were made in 3 months by the Guide Lamp Division of General Motors in 1942 with the conception to final production taking a grand total of about 6 months. This pistol would be air dropped in boxes with a comic strip of how to use the gun, a wooden dowel to push spent casings out, and some ammunition. The OSS would eventually take control of around 450,000 of these pistols and distribute some to Greece in 1944. When the war ended, there was little need or want of these pistol and most would ultimately end up destroyed by Allied forces. This Liberator is original and complete minus the bottom plate for retaining extra cartridges. Pistol opens and cocks as it should without issue. Sheet steel frame is in good condition overall with left side having "4451031" scratched on metal. Barrel has oxidized with age as has the cocking piece. A scarce opportunity to get an example of one of these pistols. Must see photos.
