US Fractional Currency 25c Third Issue fr-1294 Bust of Wm Fessenden Green Rev Grades vf+. William Pitt Fessenden was an American politician from the U.S. state of Maine. Fessenden was a Whig and member of the Fessenden political family. He served in the United States House of Representatives and Senate before becoming Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

The coins may range from circulated to uncirculated. Any condition is possible. We have weighed the roll and can assure you that it is 20 Silver Dollars, that all 20 are 1921-p and that it is not an uncirculated roll as the weight comes in slightly under the 534.60 grams that a fully uncirculated roll would weigh. We recently Acquired a large Estate Hoard of solid date Rolls. Trends lists au50 at $50, xf40 at $45, vf20 at $45, f12 at $45, vg8 at $40, g4 at $40.

It's referred to as a "Horseblanket Note," due to their large size. The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

1899 "Black Eagle" $1 Silver Certificate FR-236 Speelman-White Grades f+. Ranked #16 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, the Series 1899 Black Eagle note is from an era when paper money was backed by precious silver, as the issue bears the statement ONE SILVER DOLLAR PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND. It doesn’t take much work to figure out the nickname of the 1899 $1 silver certificate. A quick glance shows three vignettes, an eagle, Ulysses S Grant, and Abraham Lincoln. Somewhere along the way the collecting world decided that this note should be called a “black eagle.” The name has stuck. Whether you have been collected for a week or your entire life, you certainly know what a black eagle is. Grant and Lincoln often get overlooked. That might be for the best since both men are closely associated with several other large size pieces of currency

1864 $2 Confederate States Of America, T-70 Grades Select AU. This $2 paper note not only marks the last of its denomination it also was from the 7th and final series of currency issued by the Confederacy. The note features a portrait of Confederate Secretary of the State Judah Benjamin, one of the most capable members of President Jefferson Davis’ cabinet. During the Civil War, Benjamin also served as the South’s attorney general and secretary of war. When the Confederates lost a battle, he refused to reveal that they didn’t have any available reinforcements, instead accepting a congressional censure. After the war, he spent days burning personal correspondence and government documents before escaping to England, where he became a successful attorney.

A superb PROOF PR67+ Cameo example. A lovely specimen with superb champagne toned surfaces, razor sharp striking detail, and bold cameo contrast. Produced from 1865 through 1889, the nickel three-cent piece was initially intended as a replacement for its silver counterpart, examples of which were withdrawn from circulation in the East and Midwest after the suspension of specie payments early in the Civil War. As the usefulness of this denomination waned, circulation strike mintages fell off markedly beginning in the mid 1870s. The scarcest issues in that format are located near the end of this series, including the 1884 and 1885 with circulation strike mintages of just 1,700 and 1,000 pieces, respectively. For the Proofs, however, the scarcest issues are concentrated near the beginning of the nickel three-cent series, and none is rarer than the first year 1865. The mintage of this issue is unknown since it was not recorded by Mint personnel, however at least 500 pieces were struck for inclusion in the year's silver Proof sets, which were prepared in 100-set batches on February 25, March 10, 16, 20 and 24. Since this is a first year issue, additional Proof 1865 nickel three-cent pieces were undoubtedly struck for individual sale, but the number of coins involved was probably minimal. We are confident, therefore, that the 1865 has the lowest mintage of any Proof in this series. Scarce in an absolute sense, survivors are undeniably rare with the superior quality and eye appeal offered here. An outstanding coin that would do justice to the finest cabinet. Bryan refers to William Jennings Bryan and the Political campaigns of 1896 and 1900. These medals were made by Eastern silversmiths during Presidential campaigns of 1896 and 1900. They were more dignified in tone than many contemporary pieces issued for the same purpose, as latter usually were struck in base metal and were most satirical of Bryan and his cause. These silver medals showed comparative size and ratio of a dollar struck at the then-current price of silver with what it would be like if free coinage were to rule. They are much more than mere political pieces as they bore direct reference to the silver controversy and, hence, to our national coinage.

The Norfolk Half Dollar Honors the Bicentennial of Norfolk, Virginia's elevation to the status of Borough in 1736. This Commemorative marked an event of purely local interest, and realized poor sales at the time of issue. In the irony that often accompanies such initial failure, it is now among the Scarcer and More Costly Coins in the old commemorative series. This bill authorized the coining of not more than 25,000 half dollars, to be coined at a single mint and with a single design. The entire mintage of 25,013 Norfolk halves was coined in September at the Philadelphia Mint (the odd 13 pieces were reserved for assay and later destroyed). The 1796, BB-61 is rare in About Uncirculated or finer condition. The Bowers reference suggests no more than 30 pieces exist in any AU grade, and only about a dozen Mint State pieces are known. This example is remarkably well-defined with smooth, toned fields and nice mint luster that glows beneath the toning. Light hairlines are present, but unnoticeable without aid of a loupe. Bands of slate-blue alternate with areas of tan-gold patina on the obverse, while the blue overtones are less prevalent on the still-lustrous reverse. Slight wear on Liberty's temple and the eagle's breast indicate minimal circulation.One other variety exists with the Small Date, Large Letters configuration -- the BB-64 die marriage -- but that reverse die failed early and only two or three examples are confirmed, making the BB-61 the sole 1796 die pair to represent the type. In 1896, the U.S. Treasury printed Silver Certificates with beautiful designs depicting educational motifs. Known as the “Educational Series,” each of these notes is a numismatic masterpiece. They’re also incredibly difficult to come by on the front, paired on the back with a first and only in U.S. currency: the portraits of BOTH George and Martha Washington!Due to their theme, these notes became known as “One Dollar Eds” and they feature much more than just History in the form of a reclining woman pointing towards a panoramic view of the Potomac River and Washington, DC with her arm wrapped around Youth represented by the figure a young boy. Besides the images of the Washington Monument and Capitol building, the United States Constitution can be seen on the right side of the bill. Additionally, the last names of important Americans are printed in wreaths that surround the front of the bill. Some of those listed include Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Fulton and Ulysses Grant. Most of the people were included because of their artistic, cultural, or scientific achievements. ***Auction Highlight*** 1793 Chain America S-3, B-4, R-3 Flowing Hair large cent 1c Graded vf30 details By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION - Up for Auction is the Penultimate American Collectors coin, the legendary Chain Cent, The first coin, by the fledgling country. While technically the 1792 Dimse was made a few months prior, it was made in such small quantities that it is today seen as a pattern coi. The Chain Cent is universally accepted as the first US Coin. This Example Is the Sheldon 3, Breen Die State III, heavily clashed variety. Detail is pleasing for the VF level, and all legends and the date are clear. The fields and design recesses exhibit considerable granularity amid deep ebony-brown patina. The obverse exhibits extensive as made adjustment marks. HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT - Any Flowing Hair dollar approaching Uncirculated condition is an important numismatic treasure, rare and irresistible for early dollar specialists and advanced type collectors alike. This borderline Mint State coin is struck from the most-available die pair of the series, with surfaces that are attractive and unequivocally sharp -- moreso than many technically Uncirculated pieces we have seen. The diagnostic "bar" or die line near the highest neck curl identifies the readily available BB-27 die pair. Yet it is the uncommon eye appeal, surface quality, and bold strike that set this coin far above others not only of the variety, but among all near-Mint Flowing Hair dollars.The surfaces are uniformly toned in pleasing shades of brassy-gold, and light-olive shades. A few Stray Marks on the obverse account for the details grade. Significant reflectivity in the fields over both sides. The strike on Liberty's hair strands is average for the BB-27 variety. The portrait is rendered in high relief, where the hair detail normally succumbs to wear or weak strike. The eagle's breast is rounded but not quite as well-struck as the obverse, although the wing, leg, and tailfeather details are sharp. Struck from Bowers Die State III, the die line from the left stem extends to the rim (the usual measure of the die state). A faint die crack travels from the eagle's right shoulder through the nearest pair of leaves to the second T of STATES and to the rim. A small, triangular area in the eagle's right wing is a struck-through anomaly from the early minting process, interesting but not of any real importance. In short, this is an exceptional example in all regards and a prize for the early dollar connoisseur. We expect intense bidding competition when this marvelous Flowing Hair dollar crosses the block.

CC-mint Trade Dollar production remained low through 1877--just 534,000 pieces were delivered with this date and mintmark combination. Furthermore, upward of 10,000 examples may have been melted as part of the 44,148 undistributed Trade Dollars destroyed under federal authority on July 19, 1878. The majority of extant Mint State '77-CC Trade Dollars grade no finer than MS62. One should not, however, assume that this issue is common in BU. An Uncirculated 1877-CC Trade Dollar of any quality is a significant find in today's market, and one that should not be allowed to slip past the specialist. The surfaces of this specimen display soft luster, and whispers of peripheral light toning on the obverse. The design elements are sharply struck throughout. Just a few unobtrusive contact marks are noted over each side, and some wispy slide marks are visible in the fields.

1918 $1 National Currency "Flying Eagle" Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, PA Grades vf+. There are three different years found on series of 1918 one dollar bills. Despite also saying 1914 and 1913, these are referred to by collectors as 1918 federal reserve bank notes. Collectors have given this note the nickname of the “Flying Eagle.” The back of the note shows why the bill received its nickname. Keep in mind that series of 1918 one dollar federal reserve bank notes were issued for 12 different banks. The artwork will all be the same though. George Washington is on the left hand side of the bill. There is a blue seal on the right hand side of the bill and the serial numbers are in blue ink.

1862 US Fractional Currency 25¢ First Issue Fr-1280 Thomas Jefferson Grades vf+. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

It shows a portrait of Jefferson and an old vignette of the Capitol building from way back in the day. The reverse features a prominent fancy "2" surrounded by a "bracelet" of seals. 1880 $1 Legal Tender Fr-30 RARE Grades vg, very good. This Note may look like the much more common legal tender note of 1917 but it is much more rare and sought after being released almost 30 years earlier. The Main way to tell the difference is by the date & the large red seal on the right hand side of this note. The 1917 $1 Legal Tender Notes have a much smaller seal and its on the left side of the note instead of the right. This 1880 $1 Legal Tender Note Was the last Legal Tender Note of the 19th Century to be issued . It's referred to as a "Horseblanket Note," due to their large size. The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art. These notes are usually found in low vf grades or lower. Finding higher grade ones can be a challenge

A very important Trade dollar variety and tied for second FINEST known. This is a very popular variety and one of very few major varieties for the series; the partially effaced CC mintmark can be seen by the unaided eye under the S mintmark. A radial cartwheel luster swirls on both sides. A light champagne tone dusts both obverse and reverse, with accents of richer apricot-gold and a highlight of blue at 7:00 on the Obverse. The devices are crisply and fully struck on both sides. The Fields are highly reflective, which we tried to illustrate in the second set of photos. Ms. Liberty and the details are sharp and bold, as is the reverse eagle. Clearly condition census quality.

The small 12.7 mm diameter of the Type I gold dollar brought about a few complaints of it being easy to lose, like the silver trime. To address this, Longacre enlarged the diameter to 14.3 mm, but he also completely revised the design, replacing it with an Indian design with a crown of feathers resembling his design on the newly introduced three-dollar gold piece. He also moved the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA to the obverse from the reverse. The reverse laurel wreath was replaced with the cereal wreath Longacre employed on the three-dollar denomination and that was later adopted for the Flying Eagle cent. Even with these design changes, challenges faced Mint personnel when striking the coins. Because the weight of the denomination remained unchanged, the coins were made slightly thinner. The obverse Indian head bust of Liberty was in too high a relief for the thinner planchets, and most examples displayed poor definition in and around the centers. To further complicate matters, the dies often clashed early and frequently during press runs, and many survivors exhibit numerous pronounced clash marks. Bowers estimates 90% of all 1854 Type II dollars bear such clash marks on one or both sides. When looking at a San Diego half look for the first signs of wear on Minerva’s knees and on the upper-right portion of the tower. The production history of this issue is very interesting. The Act of May 3, 1935 authorized the San Francisco Mint to strike Commemorative Half Dollars for sale at the 1935-1936 San Diego World's Fair. A total of 250,132 pieces dated 1935-S were delivered, but only 70,132 coins were actually distributed. The remainder were melted and recoined into examples dated 1936-D, this under the terms of the Act of May 6, 1936. 150,000 examples of the 1936-D delivery, however, were also melted as unsold, leaving a net mintage for that issue of 30,092 coins.The present representative is one of the three finest certified 1935-S San Diego Half Dollars. We cannot overstate the importance of this offering for the advanced collector. Like the other coins with such a lofty grade, this lovely Superb Gem possesses solid technical quality for the assigned grade. The surfaces are alive with swirling mint frost and surfaces which untoned, silver-grey. A nearly abrasion-free survivor with extraordinary eye appeal.

One of less than 15 Known Uncirculated Examples. Fully prooflike in finish, this gorgeous piece exhibits pronounced contrast between reflective fields and sharp, satiny devices. The entire coin is draped in original light orange patina that enhances exceptional eye appeal. A beautiful Mint State example of a classic rarity in the Type III Liberty double eagle series.With the exception of 1888, the Philadelphia Mint struck very few double eagles throughout the 1880s. In 1885 only 751 coins were struck, making this one of the lowest mintage figures for circulation strike coins of the entire Liberty double eagle series, exceeded only by the 1882 and the 1861 Paquet Reverse coins. During this period, double eagles mostly circulated in the West, while in the East and the South there was not much call for the denomination since newly issued Silver and Gold Certificates were easily convertible into coin if so desired. The San Francisco Mint furnished the West's need for the gold coins, resulting in low mintages at Philadelphia. When collectors wished to obtain a specimen for the year, most would opt for the Proof coins. It is currently estimated that some 100 or so specimens exist in any grade, a significant percentage of the overall mintage. The majority of the surviving examples are in the EF to AU levels. Not a single Gem example has been recorded by any grading services and only two grading events are noted at the MS-63 level. This is a seldom encountered opportunity for the serious Liberty double eagle specialist to add a landmark rarity to his or her cabinet. I have included 2 other ms62 for your comparison.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT - Any Peace dollar in this condition is extremely rare because of the shallowness of the design and the wide-open, vulnerable spaces presented by the devices and the fields. Unless a coin is immediately removed from the press after striking and carefully preserved over the years, the likelihood of a regular business strike surviving unharmed is extremely low. The 1934-D, the final Denver Mint Peace dollar (discounting the rumored 1964-D pieces), is especially rare in this lofty state of preservation. This should not be overlooked by the enthusiast of this widely collected series. Only four specimens have been certified MS67 by all services combined, and none are known finer. This superb Stunningly toned example is a half point from the finest known. Dave Bowers explained the rarity of this issue in his 1993 Encyclopedia: "The 1934-D seems to be a Peace dollar that has been forgotten or overlooked. Despite a generous mintage, few documented hoards have come on the market, and I am not aware of any surviving mint-sealed bags. Presumably, the mintage dribbled into the channels of commerce over a long period of time. Phenomenal quality and eye appeal for this short lived, conditionally challenging design type. Bursting with satiny mint luster, both sides are further enhanced with gorgeous peripheral toning in Orange/Russet and cobalt blue iridescence. The strike is equally full in all areas, and with silky smooth surfaces the validity of the premium Gem grade is assured in our minds. As with their counterparts from 1853 to 1855, the Liberty Seated dimes with Arrows of 1873 and 1874 carried that distinguishing feature to denote a change in the weight standard for the denomination. In the case of these later issues, the weight was increased slightly from 2.49 grams to 2.50 grams by the Act of February 12, 1873. The Arrows coinage of 1873 to 1874 is more challenging to locate in Mint State than its predecessor from the mid 1850s, and the 1873 Philadelphia Mint issue is rarer than its 1874 counterpart in the finest grades. Indeed, this exquisite MS-65+ is among the highest graded, and it easily qualifies for inclusion in the Condition Census of the issue. No Motto Liberty half eagles were coined from 1839 to 1866, and they are rarely found in high grades despite the long run of dates. For the entire No Motto type, less than 15 examples survive at the MS65 and higher level. Clearly the 1861 is the most plentiful date in high grade, yet less than 15 MS65 and higher examples exist, and PCGS believes that number to be closer to 10. This lovely Gem possesses brilliant, light-yellow luster with satin surfaces and excellent design definition. It is an essentially fully struck specimen, with lightly striated fields that show a high degree of reflectivity, bordering on Full PL. Only a few minimal abrasions are seen on either side, and Liberty's portrait is free of all but one or two faint, inconsequential marks and an as made Struck Thru. Exceptional eye appeal exists on both sides. I have included 2 other ms65 examples for your comparison. I think ours is superior to the PCGS coin and I have included the NGC to illustrate the striations commonly found on the issue.

Both sides are satiny in texture with hard, tight surfaces that are free of significant blemishes. Struck from an advanced state of the dies, as are most examples of this variety, there is considerable evidence of die rust on both sides. The reverse die break within the wreath above the date is also readily evident. Crosby 3-B is one of the more frequently encountered die marriages of the 1785 Nova Constellatio copper, although the present example is far finer both technically and aesthetically than the typically offered survivor.

1886 $1 Martha Washington Silver Certificate Grades g, good. Here’s the famous Martha Washington note, and what a note it is! Featuring the “Mother of our Country,” it’s still the first — and only — United States paper currency to feature a real-life woman as the primary portrait. The certificates were first printed in 1886 and could be redeemed at any time for a hefty silver dollar. The 1886 series was the very first of the $1 Silver Certificate notes, and this note has been ranked as #50 in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes. The note was so popular that Martha Washington returned for a second series with a slightly revised design in 1891. The design began in the summer of 1886. The Galveston Daily News reported on August 17th, 1886, "It is learned at the Treasury Department that the new Silver Certificates authorized at the last session of Congress will not be ready for issue before November, the $1 certificate contains a vignette of Martha Washington." The portrait featured on the currency is based on Charles François Jalabert's portrait of Martha Washington.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960?s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn?t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

1870's US Fractional Currency 50¢ Fourth Issue Fr-1376 Grades f+. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Everybody in Hawaii was sitting on pins and needles. Were the Japanese preparing a massive invasion of the islands? If they did invade, they could use the millions of dollars in currency on the islands to buy war material. To thwart this, these $1 Federal Reserve Notes were sent to the islands. Each has a large HAWAII printed on the reverse. If the Japanese did invade, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "Hawaii" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.

1870's US Fractional Currency 15¢ Fourth Issue Fr-1267 Grades vf++. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

Ranked #16 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, the Series 1899 Black Eagle note is from an era when paper money was backed by precious silver, as the issue bears the statement ONE SILVER DOLLAR PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND. It doesn’t take much work to figure out the nickname of the 1899 $1 silver certificate. A quick glance shows three vignettes, an eagle, Ulysses S Grant, and Abraham Lincoln. Somewhere along the way the collecting world decided that this note should be called a “black eagle.” The name has stuck. Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

1922 Large Size $10 Gold Certificate Fr-1173 Speelman/White Grades vf+. It is hard to believe that large size ten dollar gold certificates were only issued in 1907 and 1922. The United States first printed gold certificates in the early 1860s. For some reason they never printed the ten dollar denomination until 1907. 1922 was the last year of the large size gold Certificate Currnecy. In 1928 paper money was changed to the size we are accustomed to seeing today. The portrait of Alexander Hamilton was used instead of the virtually unknown Michael Hillegas. Hillegas was the first treasurer of The United States. Perhaps if Hillegas had died in a duel then he would be better remembered today. All 1922 $10 gold certificates were signed by Speelman and White. Interestingly enough, there is a small variety for the series. Some notes have smaller serial numbers than the standard numbers. The small serial number notes do command a slight premium, especially in higher grades.

To date only 2 Mint State examples of this 10 arrows variety have ever surfaced. The 10 Arrows 1798 Silver Dollar is an interesting variety in that three of the arrows are missing from the bundle on the reverse. This was not a case of grinding the arrows from the die. Rather, the missing arrows never existed in the first place. The placement of the arrows, apart from the missing ones, is identical on both the 10 arrows variety and the normal 13 arrows 1798 Bust Dollar. The engraver was given the option of adding the additional arrows, and where to place them. In this case, he simply forgot (or neglected) to add them. The example at hand is virtually uncirculated. In fact I think it is. I think that a weak strike has been seen as a soft rub. I would categorize the coin as ms61 details rather than the au58+ details that SEGS has opted to call it. The Survival of Gold Certificates, particularly the high denominations, was impacted greatly by Franklin D. Roosevelt's executive order of April 5, 1933, requiring the surrender of these notes. In very clear terms it read, "Under the Executive Order of the President, all persons are required to deliver all gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates now owned by them to a Federal Reserve Bank, branch or agency, or to any member bank of the Federal Reserve System." The ban on gold certificates lasted until April 24, 1964, when they were given back their legal tender status. Though they were legal currency, the obligation to pay the bearer gold on demand was no longer honored. The notes remain incredibly rare as a type, with around 100 known in all grades.The presently offered example displays vividly printed inks and crackling fresh paper. The all important overprint is seen in its original yellow-gold brilliance. A true grade rarity with a few examples certified as finer. Otherwise, there is not much to limit the grade other than slightly muted luster. The strike is bold, even, and well-centered. I will note that the au58+ sold by Goldbergs, Goldberg disagreed with the grade and called it an ms60. I think ours is nicer. The 1904-S is the undisputed series rarity in Mint State grades, second only to the near-uncollectible 1892-O Micro O, a variety that many collectors exclude from their sets anyway. Ranking the 1904-S an R.6 in Mint State (population of 15-39 coins), David and John Feigenbaum say in The Complete Guide to Certified Barber Coinage, "1904-S is not only the scarcest regular issue in the half dollar set, but it also has a far lower population than the 1901-S quarter and 1895-O dime. Its rarity is usually not appreciated until you try to assemble a set and you can't find one, even after years of looking. Trying to purchase one at auction is an eye-opening experience."This Select example has swirling luster and delightful original amber-gold on the obverse and ice-blue on the reverse that complements the silver surfaces elsewhere. While a couple of slide marks and ticks on Liberty's cheek preclude a finer grade, the strike is bold, just short of full, and the eye appeal is over the top. Expect the bidding to be fierce, and act accordingly.

1902 $10 National Currency Third Charter President McKinley The Commercial National & Savings Bank Of LA, CA Grades vf, very fine. This note belongs to an important series of United States currency in that it is the last type note of National Bank Currency printed in the old larger size. At the beginning of the final charter of notes (1929) all the new notes are made in the new smaller size. This note also features the portrait of William McKinley 25th president of the United States, who had been shot and killed at the Pan-American Exposition just a few months before the first notes in this series were printed and released bearing his image. National bank notes are different from other nationally printed currency in that they are printed specifically for each individual chartered bank organization. This assisted greatly in creating a system of bank notes that were the same across the country. This aided in travelers knowing what they were spending and receiving in change, rather than the times when each bank and state printed their own currency with their own designs. The National Bank Note system was abandoned shortly after the changeover to smaller size notes in 1929, making the third charter notes the last truly used issue of this kind.

Despite also saying 1914 and 1913, these are referred to by collectors as 1918 federal reserve bank notes. Collectors have given this note the nickname of the “Flying Eagle.” The back of the note shows why the bill received its nickname. Keep in mind that series of 1918 one dollar federal reserve bank notes were issued for 12 different banks. The artwork will all be the same though. George Washington is on the left hand side of the bill. There is a blue seal on the right hand side of the bill and the serial numbers are in blue ink.

1870's US Fractional Currency 15¢ Fourth Issue Fr-1267 Grades vf++. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

Up for Auction is One of The Civil War’s Foremost Rarities, The “Encased Postage” coin. While not Technically a Coin, a Note or a Stamp, John Gault’s Encased Postage was king of currency For a Brief Year in 1862. When The Civil war Broke out in 1861, all of the “Hard Currency” quickly Dissapeared. But people still needed to purchase a 3¢ loaf of bread, a 1¢ newspaper, a 5¢ quart of milk and countless other goods that required coins. And vendors had to make change when an item’s price was less than a nickel, a dime or a quarter. In some cities, businesses gave customers I.O.Us, private companies created “Civil War tokens” and paper money was cut into several pieces to represent a fraction of a dollar. Clever remedies for sure, but none that were widely used or accepted. All of this radically changed on July 17, 1862, when Congress decided to address the coinage shortage and passed a law that allowed postage stamps to satisfy debts of less than $5. People began to carry stamps in their purses and pockets and used them repeatedly for daily purchases. Vendors gladly accepted the stamps as payment. But all of this hand-to-hand usage quickly resulted in damaged stamps with denominations sometimes unrecognizable. The local post offices would not exchange damaged stamps for new ones, so a remedy was needed. John Gault, a New York entrepreneur, decided he had the best solution. On August 12, 1862, Gault obtained a patent for a “postage stamp case”, or as he named the item in a newspaper advertisement, the “New Metallic Currency. Gault didn’t sell the encased stamps to the public. Instead, he sold them to stores and businesses that needed “coinage” to make change for customers’ purchases. Gault’s profit came from the 20% markup over the face value of the stamp. To increase his potential profit, Gault’s second idea was to inscribe advertising on the back of the encased stamp. He would charge companies who purchased the metallic currency an additional 2¢ for each item. Encased stamps were widely accepted in the general commerce realm until later in 1862 when the government issued “fractional currency”. This legitimate, government-sanctioned currency quickly eliminated the coin shortage. Having no other value than the stamp, people tore apart the encasements of their metallic currency to remove the stamp to use as postage. Thus the scarcity of the 1862 encased stamps today. The Example being offered today is EP34B, Large Ayer’s, Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, 3c Rose Colored Washington Stamp, with the Advertising Slogan “To Purify the Blood” The case has a nice Patina and some original silvering remaining, which is rare, The Mica & Stamp are 100% intact. The Stamp is Clear and the Case pleasing.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

We have weighed the roll and can assure you that it is 20 Silver Dollars, that all 20 are 1921-p and that it is not an uncirculated roll as the weight comes in slightly under the 534.60 grams that a fully uncirculated roll would weigh. 1863 US Fractional Currency 25c Third Issue fr-1303 George Washinton Grades vf++. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.
