Model of RAINBOW, 1934 America’s Cup Defender Model of RAINBOW, 1934 America’s Cup Defender

Model of RAINBOW, 1934 America’s Cup Defender

Lot #016 (Sale Order 16 of 104)

Professionally built wood model of 1934 J-Boat yacht designed by William Starling Burgess and built for Harold Vanderbilt. RAINBOW won the Cup that year but was defeated in the defender trials in 1938. She was scrapped in 1940. The model is 18 in long and 25 in tall, has excellent detail, and comes with a beautiful class case and wooden stand. BUT, at some point in its life the model was vandalized by an angry child (?), a jilted lover (?), or maybe a spouse or ex-spouse (?) who cut all of the rigging. However, a competent model builder can repair the damage with skill, patience, and eyesight well beyond mine. The model also comes with a well-padded shipping container if you decide you want to send it off to a pro for repair. OR, display like it is and enjoy the beautiful lines of the yacht.

Laser 2 Sailboat

Lot #023 (Sale Order 23 of 104)

Owner says, Similar to the Solo Laser, but roomier to allow 2 sailors and has both a Main Sail and a Jib Sail. Pretty sure it was built around 2000 and is in very good condition. Both Main and Jib are in great shape, along with 2 centerboards, one fairly new and a second that has some wear, which I used for teaching friends to sail. Rudder and all equipment is in very good working order. Can easily be sailed solo with just the main, or with both sails out. Or bring a friend for the fun. Boat comes with the Lil-Rider trailer, which is in great shape. It will be outfitted with new hardware and wheels prior to the auction. (New safety chains, tow coupler, straps, lighting kit and wheels) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_2

1960 Century Resorter

Lot #024 (Sale Order 24 of 104)

95% of this beautiful boat is in excellent condition with good wood, instruments, and great upholstery, and includes a galvanized trailer. It is almost turnkey, EXCEPT it is missing the transom. It seems as if there was some rot or perhaps the previous owner backed into a concrete pier. So, a new transom needs to be built and fitted. Estimates range from $1500 to $3000 for a professional job or less if you are a good woodworker. Beside the transom job, the boat appears to be in first class shape. Trailer included.

Lot #036 (Sale Order 36 of 104)

The Coronado has traditionally been the top of the line for Century. This one has just been pulled out of storage and needs work. The upholstery will need replacing and the hull will need a complete refinish. Initial inspection did not find any rot, but further investigation is needed. The engine is a big block V-8 that is complete but will need some tweaking. This is definitely a project boat, which when finished, will reward the new owner with a fast and solid head-turner.

1948 Century Sea Maid 1948 Century Sea Maid

1948 Century Sea Maid

Lot #047 (Sale Order 47 of 104)

A stunning example of one of Century’s first post-war runabouts, the Sea Maid features a twin-cockpit forward layout with dark mahogany and blond decking and almost perfect upholstery and instrumentation. It has been lovingly cared for inside a boathouse on Lake Sunapee. The Gray Marine Fire Ball 6 cylinder engine provides plenty of power for a fast, comfortable ride. This boat is one of the finest of its kind in the country today.

MODEL-Sea Maid Runabout. Year :1948. Length: 19’6″. Bottom: New 1990. Last in Water: Unknown

Engine Details

Manufacturer: Gray Marine. Model: Fire Ball. Horsepower: 140. Year: 1948 Overhaul in 1990. Cylinders : Six. Condition Good

HULL AND DECK STRUCTURES

The hull construction is of 3/8″ planked Mahogany, over White Oak framing with Oak battens utilized on the hull interior. Fastenings are a combination of bronze screws and bolts. A visual inspection of the hull sides did not reveal any sign of checking, or protruding planking. The hull sides are protected in uniform coatings of varnish, and have a smooth, damage free finish. An inspection of the hull interior did not reveal any deficiencies. All accessible structural members inspected and found to be in well preserved condition. The removal of fastenings was not performed at this time, however there was no outward evidence of fastener failure sighted.

BOTTOM

According to the documentation provided the bottom was replaced in 1990 with the planks set in 3M5200 for a water tight seal. The stem, stern post, keel, floor supports and transom interior were found to be easily accessible, in good visual condition. The transverse frames that were accessible were noted to be free of splitting and checking. The bronze bolts and screw heads that are visible were clean and dry, corrosion free. The bilge spaces were observed to be very clean and dry. The single bronze through hull fitting was clean and dry, free of visible corrosion. The factory thru hull was absent a seacock, which is not to current ABYC Standards but was typical for this vintage. .

STEERING SYSTEM.

The steering system was inspected and found to be installed to good marine practice, well secured. The wheel was spun and the rudder observed to turn without difficulty. The manual linkage system was observed to be in good serviceable condition. The rudder blade was found to be properly aligned and supported. .

MACHINERY AND SYSTEMS .

The propulsion power is supplied by an in line six cylinder Gray Marine gasoline engine, rated at 140 horsepower by the manufacturer. The engine was not demonstrated to run at this time, and a visual inspection only was performed. The engine beds and mounts, wiring harness, fuel line, cooling hoses and exhaust system were found to be to good marine practice, without area of concern. The air intake was found to be fitted with a secured spark arrester. The appearance of the engine was found to be clean and dry, without fuel or oil leaks present. The painted fuel tank is chocked and strapped in place against the transom interior. The tank has been removed, inspected, cleaned and painted for corrosion protection. The basic 12 volt DC system also appears to have been refurbished during the last restoration. The engine is coupled to a paragon reverse gear, also found to be in good visual condition. It is worth mention that many of the comparable listings available of like kind and quality, restored vessels have modern replacement engines, which to a collector may not be as desirable as the original manufacturer’s equipment.

16 ft Tunnel Race Boat 16 ft Tunnel Race Boat

16 ft Tunnel Race Boat

Lot #063 (Sale Order 63 of 104)

This is an early Clock Craft 16 ft tunnel boat designed for around-the-buoys racing in the seventies. It is powered by a 1960 Mercury 80 hp 6-cylinder short shaft engine with a Speedmaster 1:1 direct drive lower unit. The motor was totally restored by an outboard speed shop in Richmond, Virginia less than 5 years ago. It was raced in the early SH tunnel class in 1972-1974 and set a World Speed Record on July 6, 1974. In addition, there is a complete spare Speedmaster lower unit included. Note that just the Speedmaster lower unit for a motor like this typically goes for between $1000 and $1500 EACH. Several stainless steel propellers are also included, each worth $500.

The previous owner of this rig showed it at the Alton Bay Boat Show a few years ago and was preparing it for speed runs at the NHBM Race Boat Regatta, but unexpectedly passed away. This is a rare opportunity for a fast and historically significant race boat and record-setting motor. Trailer included.

Gambit Ice Boat - 2 Person Gambit Ice Boat - 2 Person

Gambit Ice Boat - 2 Person

Lot #073 (Sale Order 73 of 104)

This Gambit was built by Jay Whitehair in about 1985 from a Lloyd Roberts design. Whitehair remains an active and renowned iceboat builder and sailor in northern New England. Roberts, also an active sailor from Maine is the author of the first and still definitive book on the sport, Think Ice - the DN Iceboating Book.

Owners bought the new Gambit from Jay as an addition to their little fleet. The appeal was that it could take two sailors, so it was perfect for a family option as there were four young sons who were developing an interest in the sport. It was also enjoyed over the ensuing decades by friends and extended family as a fun way to experience hard water sailing with a bit less risk than venturing out solo. It was sailed locally on Winnipesaukee, Wentworth and Mirror Lake.

This Gambit is not a boat for the aspiring competitive racer but a fine craft for family fun. Close examination will show signs of jumping in and out with golf shoes or ice skates. As Jay Whitehair commented, it is a real tribute to Lloyd that it has survived in such good condition. After being in storage for about a decade in the 1990 s, it was actively sailed from about 2000 to 2017 when local conditions permitted. All hardware is included and in good condition as is the sail. The trailer is old but functional for this light craft and it is currently registered.

NDK Romany 16ft Kayak

Lot #080 (Sale Order 80 of 104)

Owner says, Designed by Welsh Kayaking Legend Nigel Denise, first to circumnavigate England by Kayak in 1980. The Romany is well suited for both Lake and Ocean. This is the model made for a lighter smaller framed paddler, which my wife paddled extensively in the Pacific Northwest and on Lake Winnipesaukee. Well suited for day trips as well as overnight touring. Tracks extremely well, yet still responsive due to a slight rocker and very rock proof as all NDK’s started life on the Welsh coast. New NDK Romany kayaks can still be purchased at a Maine dealer but run over $4,000.
