Conway Stewart draws the design inspiration for the detailed engraving on the cap and barrel from the work of Pugin featured on the exterior walls of the Palace of Westminster itself. The small diamond shaped recesses covering the cap and barrel are based on similar decorative detail on the outside of the Palace. The tiny oak leaves in the recesses are a symbol of England, whose mighty oak forests built the navy and made England a maritime nation, spreading the ideas of democracy from the Mother of Parliaments around the World. Westminster mediaeval Palace was entirely destroyed by a fire on 16 October 1834. It took more than 30 years to complete the construction of the new Palace of Westminster. The three ships which embarked on this legendary voyage, the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery are masterfully carved in low relief around the cap with bands of rope and flowing ribbons engraved with each ship's moniker. One ribbon bears the engraved description: "America's 400th Anniversary" along with "1607 - 2007". The barrel features illustrations of the fleet based on sail-maker drawings of the day within three rope-bordered cartouches. A sextant, cannon, and ship's navigation wheel decorate the bottom of portion of the barrel. The final touch to this creative design is a compass rose on the end of the barrel. The David Oscarson Jacques de Molay pen is named for the last grand master of the Knights Templar, a Christian military order that fought in the Crusades. In 1307, France’s King Philip IV, who was deeply in debt to the order, had de Molay and his fellow knights arrested on charges of heresy. Seven years later, with the approval of Pope Clement V, Philip ordered de Molay burned at the stake after he refused to confess to the charges brought against him. The cap crown depicts the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which was built on what is said to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial near Jerusalem. The barrel represents the Apprentice Pillar at Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland, which was erected 150 years after the dissolution of the Knights Templar but is said to contain many symbols of the order. The clip is in the shape of a knight’s sword, and the gripping section is engraved with an acacia branch, a Templar symbol of purity and endurance. The bottom is engraved with the image of two knights on one horse, an image also found at Rosslyn Chapel. This is a reference to the order’s oath of brotherhood and poverty. Limited Edition Purple. This La Sagrada Familia Limited Edition roller ball in Black is a tribute to Antoni Gaudi’s contributions to the magnificent Basilica in Barcelona. The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia was originally the inspiration of a bookseller, Josep Maria Bocabella, but in March of 1883, Antoni Gaudi (1852 – 1926) assumed responsibility for its design, changing it radically. Gaudi was appointed Architect Director in 1884 and construction continues today; on the subject of the extremely long construction period, Gaudí is said to have remarked: "My client is not in a hurry”. When Gaudí died in 1926, the basilica was between 15 and 25 percent complete. Work continued after Gaudí's death, until it was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Parts of the unfinished Basilica and Gaudí's models and workshop were destroyed during the war. Present design is based on reconstructed versions of the plans that were burned in a fire as well as on modern adaptations and construction is estimated to be completed in 2026. Using a mortar and pestle, a composition of glass, water and metal oxides is ground for hours by hand. When settled, the water is removed, leaving the fine paste that is the basis for hard enamel. A quill is then used to apply each coat of the mixture to the surface of the metal, ensuring that the entire guilloch area is completely covered in enamel. The components are then fired in a furnace at temperatures exceeding 1,000 F, fusing the enamel to the metal and forming a layer of glass. After cooling, the pieces are manually ground with a diamond file, restoring their proper shape and surface. This tedious process is repeated at length until the level of enamel reaches the depth required to cover the peaks and fill the valleys of each intricate guilloch pattern. When the final stages of firing are completed, the pieces are polished and buffed, revealing the velvet finish of translucent hard enamel. Production of translucent hard enamel demands the highest levels of patience, experience and skill. A five-year apprenticeship is required to ensure that the highest levels of quality will be met in each individual Collection piece. The Jacques De Molay pen by David Oscarson commemorates Grand Master Jacques de Molay of the Knights Templar, who was arrested on Friday the 13th of October, 1307 by King Philip IV of France. He would be later executed on March 14, 1314 for supposed heresy against the church. Philip IV owed a massive debt to the Knights Templar and manufactured evidence of heresy which would lead to the arrest and execution of numerous Knights Templar within France's borders. This commemorative pen has its body is coated in dark green enamel. The white and black checkered enamel recalls the tessellate floor of the Masonic Temple. The clip is fashioned after a Templar sword, complete with the red stone of de Molay. Alfonso I “The Belligerent” King of Aragon and Navarre died without descendants. His reign was left to two military orders. The Aragon people rejected the king’s will and made Ramiro, the king’s brother, the successor to the throne. He left his monastery and marries Ines de Poitiers they have a daughter, Petronilla, who is given to marry Ramon Berenguer IV immediately after her birth. Following the same example, the Navarre also tried to install their own king and so the two kingdoms became divided. Aragon and Catalan began their common destiny. In accordance with the Romanov tradition, this piece was presented to Empress Maria Fedorovna in 1887 by her husband, Tsar Alexander III. Consuelo Venderbilt, the Duchess of Marlborough saw the Imperial Blue Serpent Clock Egg on a visit to Russia and was stricken by its beauty. Shortly thereafter, Fabergé was commissioned to recreate the design, which was completed in 1902, this time in Pink, bearing her initials. The Pink Serpent pen takes its inspiration from this historical Fabergé Egg, the only one made for an American. With this Limited Edition Montegrappa celebrates ballet on the occasion of the 230th anniversary of Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet Theatre foundation. The Bolshoi company was founded in 1776 by Prince Peter Urussov, under the auspices of the Tsarina Catherine the Great. The Petrovsky Theatre where the Bolshoi company originally performed was completely destroyed in the gigantic fire of 1805 during the Napoleonic wars. The present Bolshoi theatre was built in 1825 in perfect neoclassical style, the word 'Bolshoi' in Russian simply meaning 'Grand'. The importance of the Bolshoi was already well-known when, at the end of the 19th century, it began to concentrate on classical ballet, becoming the sanctuary of classical dance during the 20th century. To create Tribute to Ballet Limited Edition, Montegrappa has drawn its inspiration from the neoclassical architecture of the Bolshoi theatre which is both sumptuous and sober. The barrel of solid silver is decorated with a low-relief engraving of the famous facade of the theatre with its great portico supported by eight columns, dominated by Apollo, the Greek god of the arts, in particular music and song, with his quadriga or four-horse chariot. Above and below the facade is a decorative motif whose design reproduces the decoration of the ceiling vault of the theatre dominating the stage, at the centre of which is a lyre. It translates into, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord Our God, The Lord In One.” On the cap is the Star of David. Opening it reveals the word for life in Hebrew and a pattern of interlaced Stars of David, while the barrel also features an engraving of a palm branch, a classic symbol of peace. The Stars of Egypt Limited Edition is a masterpiece tribute to the early astronomers of ancient Egypt, rendered in very deeply engraved .925 sterling silver. The pen has the look and feel of a found object, covered in the imagery of astronomy and Egyptian culture. These were the pyramid builders who used the stars and the Sun to align their temples and pyramids to the four cardinal points of the compass. These early astronomers also developed the 24-hour day, and the 365 day calendar, with 12 months of 30 days each followed by 5 additional days to balance with the solar year. The pen's cap and barrel combine to show three major images arranged on a canvas representing the constellations near Orion and featuring the star Sirius. In ancient Egyptian astronomy, the star Sirius was the brightest in the night sky and is the stellar representation of Isis. Sirius appears in July, when the Nile River begins its annual flood, announcing the heat of the summer and the coming of the harvest in the fall. The Nile flooding gave fertility to the soil. Because of the importance of Sirius, the ancient Egyptians based their calendar on its coming. On the solid gold Stars of Egypt pen, the Sheaffer White Dot is replaced by a .25 karat diamond representing that star. The back face of the cap is dominated by the figure of the constellation we know as Orion, but the Ancient Egyptians saw as Osiris, the God of the Underworld. The figure is set at the center of a burst of rays which are further framed in a circle motif that extends around to the front face of the cap, creating an interesting winged appearance at the sides of the clip. The barrel has two large images that work together on the top side, the same face as the nib face. The pyramid represents the Great Pyramid at Giza, one of three principal pyramids. Some believe that the three represent a sky map of the three stars of the Belt of Orion. The cap of the pyramid derived from the Eye of Ra or Eye of Horus. This symbol, also rendered as the Eye of Providence, appears on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States of America and on the reverse of the US one dollar bill. In the shaft our artists have represented the story of the Old Testament with its most significant images: Adam and Eve, Noah’s Arch, David and Goliath, Abraham and Isaac, Moses and the Decalogue, while on the cap we have represented the prayer in front of the Wailing Wall, a very important spiritual moment. Jacob, who was later renamed Israel after a mysterious incident in which he with an angel or God, had twelve sons who became the ancestors of twelve tribes, each occupying a separate territory in the holy land of Israel. The Visconti 12 Tribes pen is enriched with Biblical symbols and historical meaning. Distinctive signs and images attributed to each of the tribes are engraved into the pen through a scrimshaw process and different color enamels. The body of the pen is made from ancient 925 silver and features a raised engraving of an olive tree branch, symbol of peace and prosperity. The body has a unique rotating system that shows each tribe image as the barrel is turned: ‘Reouvene, Shimone, Levy, Yehouda, Yissakhar, Zevouloune, Dan, Naphthali, Gad, Asher, Yossef, Binyamine’. The pen has many more hidden surprises: The clip is modeled after the hand of the Torah. The five fingers are often considered to represent the five books of the Torah. The number is 1,618 and it corresponds to what is considered a “particularly aesthetic ratio”. July 4th, 1776 is a date that changed the world. It is the day that declared the birth of a great nation and enshrined the rights of free and independent people. Adopted by the Continental Congress, the Declaration of Independence announced that the 13 American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, were now independent states, and thus no longer part of the British Empire. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson and signed by 56 members of the Congress in pen and ink, it is fitting that Visconti would commemorate this event with an amazing limited edition rollerball pen. Visconti uses its sophisticated scrimshaw technique to replicate the full text of the Declaration of Independence onto the pen’s ivory resin body. The writing is just large enough to be legible to the naked eye - a specially engraved viewing glass is included to magnify the intricate details. A reproduction of the painting, ‘Declaration of Independence’ by the American artist John Trumbull, is inscribed on the barrel. The ornate bands are cast in aged sterling silver including the blind cap engraved with an American bald eagle. The rollerball pen and magnifying glass are presented in a special collector’s box crafted in American walnut with leather inset embossed with the declaration’s 56 signatures.
