1914 Ford Model T Roadster. This is the very first car Lot #140 (Sale Order 140 of 319) 1914 Ford Model T Roadster. This is the very first car Daryl Hemken purchased in 1957 to begin his collection of vehicles. The car has less than 1,000 miles as the original owner bought two of the 1914 models because it was the last year that Ford would include the cherry wood dashboard/cowl moving to a formed metal cowl in 1915. It was also the first year of Ford's "any color so long as it is black&" policy. The original owner rarely drove this car but stored it in his barn where he would sit and read his newspaper. The roof of the barn leaked which is why the seats and top are damaged. Otherwise, it runs well, according to Steve Hemken, Daryl's son and current caretaker of the collection. The car has the "turtle deck" trunk and there is a tank on the running board that contained acetylene for the headlamps. The car has seen limited use since it began the Hemken Collection in 1960 and is now running and drivable. It could be roadworthy with some easy interior repairs making it ready to cruise for ice cream or serve as a parade vehicle. It's likely you won't find another with this limited mileage.

1929 Ford Model A Roadster. In February 1929 Ford Motor Lot #141 (Sale Order 141 of 319) 1929 Ford Model A Roadster. In February 1929 Ford Motor Company had sold one million Model A's. Five months later the company had sold two million. It may have seemed like everybody had a Model A and this example was purchased by Daryl Hemken because he thought it was a great way to show how people during both the Depression and World War II had to 'make do' and the Model A could handle any task you could throw its direction. This Model A roadster was purchased during the 1960s in rough condition in Alexandria, Virginia. The former owner was a painter by trade, welding brackets on the fenders of the A to hold his ladders, using a screen door hook to keep the door closed, a chain to raise the trunk and tar to seal the windshield. It remains just as he found it.

1975 Volvo 164. Following an 18-year hiatus, Volvo Lot #142 (Sale Order 142 of 319) 1975 Volvo 164. Following an 18-year hiatus, Volvo unveiled its first luxury sedan in 1968, the 164, after ending production of its last luxury vehicle, the PV60, in 1950. The six-cylinder 164 was Volvo's answer to the Mercedes-Benz 250 and Jaguar's XJ6. This 1974 164 can use some cosmetic restoration, but the 3-litre over-head valve B30 engine does run.

1984 Volvo 240DL. With the newest Volvo 240 now over 25 Lot #143 (Sale Order 143 of 319) 1984 Volvo 240DL. With the newest Volvo 240 now over 25 years old, and the earliest incarnations of the 200 series heading into their 40s, examples of these iconic cars are finally starting to show up on the collector car market. Easy to work on and with reliable & simple mechanicals, the 200 family is lining up alongside similarly sized Mercedes-Benz models of the same era as an inexpensive introduction to classic European ownership. This DL (for deluxe) example needs restoration but has a running Volkswagen-designed D24 diesel engine under the hood and drives well. These aren't luxurious cars, but they are reliable, as you expect from a Scandinavian built vehicle. The 240s were built for many years simply because so many people liked them.

1942 Packard 110 Convertible. This Packard was brought Lot #144 (Sale Order 144 of 319) 1942 Packard 110 Convertible. This Packard was brought home from Davenport, Iowa in 1964 during a cold spell that hit -30 degrees by the time it was finally dragged onto the Hemken property in Williams, Iowa using Daryl's 1958 Mercedes-Benz which suffered from some electrical problems. Nonetheless the Packard made it into the collection and continues to have original paint, interior, and engine. There is minimal rust on this rare convertible that was part of very minimal Packard production in 1942 as automobile production was halted in February that year due to manufacturing changeover for World War II. There are no records of how many total vehicles Packard actually built that year including the small number of convertibles. Additional parts for this car include a complete 100 engine, new old stock front fenders and steering wheel, sells seperately. It does need a radio, but the dash plastics are very nice and the car is ready for restoration. McPherson College interns Spencer Ice & Jimmy Pawlak helped excavate this Packard from the barn!

1954 Packard Convertible. This convertible was Lot #145 (Sale Order 145 of 319) 1954 Packard Convertible. This convertible was purchased in July 1968 from Al Berger in Lohrville, Iowa and it still runs and drives, but does need brakes at the time of the auction. This was the final year for the Packard Series 5479 convertible as the manufacturer struggled with sales and merged with Studebaker on October 1, 1954, with headquarters in Detroit. This car is one of just 863 built that year. The company built a new engine plant in Utica, New York to manufacture a new 359ci straight eight engine which powers this convertible but just a few short months later introduced a brand-new V-8 engine which didn't make it into the '54 lineup.

1948 Plymouth Convertible. This Plymouth convertible Lot #146 (Sale Order 146 of 319) 1948 Plymouth Convertible. This Plymouth convertible was purchased in 1966 in Fort Dodge, IA to add to the Hemken Collection. It's not running but very restorable with all the factory components in place. This Super Deluxe model is one of 15,295 built during Plymouth's extended 15-month production calendar and has the factory 95 hp, 218ci straight six with manual three speed transmission. Plymouths after World War II weren't fancy, but they were known for ease of service.

1947 Hudson Big Boy Pickup. Though it appears to be Lot #147 (Sale Order 147 of 319) 1947 Hudson Big Boy Pickup. Though it appears to be rusty, this rare 1947 Hudson pickup doesn't have a rust hole anywhere on the body or box and is ready for a complete restoration or the base for a radical custom truck. Purchased in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1975, this pickup, dubbed the Big Boy by Hudson, belonged to Luther's Sewing Center. The truck features the largest pickup box of the time at 48 cubic feet of cargo space. And this one still has its original wood floor in place. Hudson built pickup trucks for many years, usually for other manufacturers or under names not associated with Hudson. After World War II the company had a large pickup in its truck offerings and decided to bring it back out as a Hudson ¾ ton Big Boy. This pickup shares its front end with the passenger Hudson and though it only lasted two model years (1946-47), the company sold about 6,000 of the trucks which was a respectable number in the mid-1940s. Even though it's not running, it's rare to see one of these Hudson trucks completely intact.

1948 Ford convertible. As most Ford aficionados know, Lot #148 (Sale Order 148 of 319) 1948 Ford convertible. As most Ford aficionados know, the 1948 Ford was the last year of the post-war facelifting the company did of its 1942 models to get it back on track with an all-new design that came in 1949. The '48 looked much like the '47 and even the '46, but what really set this year's convertible model apart from the rest of the model line was it was only available with Ford's famed flathead V-8. The 239ci flattie produced 100 horsepower, was super reliable with two leak-proof water pumps, four-ring aluminum pistons and an optional cartridge-type oil filter. The flathead engine is, and always will be, highly prized by purists, racers and hot rodders alike. So this DeLuxe convertible, purchased by Daryl Hemken in 1971 in Boone, Iowa fits the bill for being special. Though it isn't a running example, all the pieces are present and it's ready, whatever direction you want to take it.

1948 DeSoto Custom Convertible. In December 1974 Daryl Lot #149 (Sale Order 149 of 319) 1948 DeSoto Custom Convertible. In December 1974 Daryl Hemken discovered and purchased this 1948 Desoto Custom convertible in Cleveland, Ohio. Driving it back home he had to stop often because the car had a leaky gas tank. He found he could only get the tank to hold five gallons at a time, so stops were frequent and the journey was slow. DeSoto sold 8,100 convertibles in 1948 and this one still sports its original 237ci L-head straight six engine with DeSoto's innovative Fluid Drive system. That system, introduced by DeSoto in 1939, allows the car to be held stationary in any gear without disengaging the clutch for the three-speed manual transmission. This example isn't currently running, but is complete, just as Daryl Hemken found it back in 1974.

1937 Nash Ambassador. While Daryl Hemken was traveling Lot #150 (Sale Order 150 of 319) 1937 Nash Ambassador. While Daryl Hemken was traveling on a national auto tour in 1979, he came across this 1937 Nash Ambassador in Minnesota. He wasted no time when he got home. He quickly returned to the Nash location and brought it back to his collection. This is a running, driving vehicle though brakes do need replacement. It has a 322ci twin-ignition overhead valve straight 8 engine, hydraulic brakes, and overdrive, which was very unusual in 1937. Nash began using the Ambassador name for its most luxurious models in 1927 and competed with the likes of Packard, Lincoln, and Duesenberg in the grand luxury category. In 1937 the Sinclair Oil Company sponsored a baseball contest with Babe Ruth where a 1937 Nash Ambassador Eight sedan was given away every week.

1940 Buick Business Special Coupe. Daryl and Ann Hemken Lot #151 (Sale Order 151 of 319) 1940 Buick Business Special Coupe. Daryl and Ann Hemken bought it from Al Berger in 1978 in Lohrville, Iowa. They drove it home and continued to enjoy driving it around. The steering wheel, running boards, and running board molding are all redone. It has been re-painted one time, otherwise everything is original. The seats were re-stuffed and original upholstery fabric was re-used. Vehicle runs and drives great. The '40 Special Coupe cost $795 from the dealer and included the 248ci straight 8. The car was intended for sales and businessmen and even included a curtain that hung behind the front seat. The rear area does not contain a seat and the trunk has a flat wood surface built above the spare tire, providing even more room for sales samples or equipment someone might use as a traveling business.

1947 DeSoto. This is one of those "too good not to save Lot #152 (Sale Order 152 of 319) 1947 DeSoto. This is one of those "too good not to save" cars Daryl Hemken purchased from a collector in 1979. With just 31,000 original miles on the odometer, the car was destined to be used as a parts car for Hemken's 1948 DeSoto convertible. The roof and windshield were caved in when the former owner's storage garage had a roof collapse, so he let it go at auction. Hemken brought it home, realized how nice the car was and with a repaint it's now ready for the road. The '47 DeSoto's were dead ringers for the '46 models due to material shortages post-WW2, but the 237ci straight six engine and dependable manual three-speed transmission made these solid purchases. This one runs nice and still shows it is well worth saving.

1948 Cadillac Convertible. "Symbol of Lot #153 (Sale Order 153 of 319) 1948 Cadillac Convertible. "Symbol of Supremacy America's finest motor car" shouted the GM top-of-the-line Cadillac, which led the redesign charge with the industry's first all-new post-war styling. Daryl Hemken became the second owner of this convertible in 1965 when he purchased it from a Des Moines couple who were Christian Science Practitioners and used the car primarily to drive to the Mother Church in Boston. The all-new post-war Caddy's sported tail fins inspired by the P-38 fighter plane, a shortened wheelbase and a 2" wider track that provided more interior room. The Cadillac 346ci flathead V-8 remained, however, for another year when Cadillac introduced the overhead valve 331ci engine. That engine produced 160 horsepower, 10 horsepower more than the flathead. The engine in this car was overhauled in 1990. In hibernation for a number of years, it's still running well and is fully expected to make someone a "showy" and fun to drive Caddy convertible.

1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible. Purchased in 1964 Lot #154 (Sale Order 154 of 319) 1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible. Purchased in 1964 from Austin Helgerson in Des Moines, this non-running Packard Caribbean is completely intact. Standard features on this car placed it in the ultra-luxury class of the automobiles of the era. Standard features included full leather interior, chrome wire wheels, full length hood scoop, chrome wheel well trim, and continental tire kit. There were 750 of these first-year convertibles built, costing $5210 from the dealer, compared to its "sister" convertible, the series 2679. 1518 of those were built, but the dealer price was almost $2000 less at $3486. The Caribbean was based on Packard's 1952 show car, the Pan American convertible. The Caribbean's received extensive modifications by the Mitchell-Bentley Corporation in Ionia, Michigan. Those modifications included full cutout rear wheel fender wells with wide chrome trim. As Packard pointed out in its advertising the 1953 lineup was "America's most exciting car! Packard. Ask the Man who owns one!"

1923 Model T Ford. Daryl Hemken purchased this car in Lot #155 (Sale Order 155 of 319) 1923 Model T Ford. Daryl Hemken purchased this car in 1993 from Les Anderson in Kanawha, Iowa and used it to teach his sons how to drive. These cars are driven using one of three pedals with the left pedal the low and high gears, the center pedal for reverse and the right pedal for the brake. Obviously if you could handle driving a Model T it gave you great driving skills! The early '23's had forward opening doors, the last year for that configuration. Later in the year Ford placed a shelf behind the seat and the doors opened from the rear. This car remains fully functioning and drives well once you get used to the pedal.

1927 Model T "Snowbird" This is a rare restored Lot #156 (Sale Order 156 of 319) 1927 Model T "Snowbird". This is a rare restored snowmobile conversion that was purchased from the postmaster of Blairsburg, Iowa in 1970. It is fully operational but hasn't been run since its restoration, so everything remains in excellent condition. There are very few of these in existence. In 1917 Virgil D. White, a Ford dealer located in Ossipee, New Hampshire patented the idea of what he called the "snowmobile". Rather than making a completely new vehicle, White fabricated a conversion kit for his Model T allowing the car to travel in deep snow, making impassable roads accessible in the bitter New Hampshire winter. It included wooden and metal skis to replace the front wheels, plus an extra axle and wheels around back. The early kits used tracks made of metal cleats connected by heavy fabric, but that was later updated to stamped steel shoes with chain links connecting them. To accommodate the modifications, the factory rear axle, rear spring, radius rods, and driveshaft were swapped out. In their place went a 7:1 Ford truck worm gear driveline, which was anchored to the frame using two cantilevered semi-elliptical springs.

1928 Ford Model A Grocery Wagon. This fully restored Lot #157 (Sale Order 157 of 319) 1928 Ford Model A Grocery Wagon. This fully restored Model A "Huckster wagon" was originally used as a grocery delivery vehicle and was displayed at Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa before being purchased in 2004 for the Hemken Collection. The hucksters were used for many purposes and built by outside craftsmen who would build the rear sections to specifications using high quality wood. The name huckster is derived from the term used to describe someone who sells small items door to door or from a small store. Typical huckster wagons began life as Model A pickup trucks with the rear bed discarded and the huckster body built and installed. Delivery trucks were commonly used as were train depot hucksters to transport luggage. This one is completely drivable and ready to make that next delivery.

1932 Chevrolet Confederate Deluxe Sedan. This 1932 Lot #158 (Sale Order 158 of 319) 1932 Chevrolet Confederate Deluxe Sedan. This 1932 Chevy still wears its original paint providing a nice patina appearance. All exterior components are in place including the dual side fender spare tires, the chromed spoke wheels and the chrome engine vents on each side of the hood. The car was donated to the museum in 2009 by Albert Wilbolm of Colo, Iowa. Even the interior of this 4-door sedan is near perfect except for some fabric fading. The interior trim and dash gauges are all in excellent condition. The car still has the lace fabric pull-down shades on the side and rear windows for those times when privacy is important. The car runs and drives, but an engine knock may need to be investigated.

Willys Knight 1928 Model 56 Touring Sedan. A true “Barn Find” Lot #158a (Sale Order 159 of 319) Willys Knight 1928 Model 56 Touring Sedan. A true “Barn Find” automobile. Put in storage by the second owner in 1951, now…70 years later it was extracted from a storage building with doors that had been screwed shut. Last licensed in the year it went in storage, the title is currently missing in action.
Willys-Knight automobiles were produced between 1914 and 1933 by the Willys-Overland Company of Toledo, Ohio. The Willys-Knight employed a rare Knight sleeve valve engine invented by Charles Yale Knight. John North Willys was the first US auto maker to buy this license. Without the more common noisy valve system, these engines ran much more quietly.
Willys-Knight production ended in November 1932 (model year 1933) when the company, in receivership, stopped building higher priced cars, and instead focused on the manufacture of the inexpensive but durable Willys 77. Willys-Knight automobiles were top of the line American Luxury cars and carried very hefty price tags for their time.
This car, is a survivor in original condition. It does appear as though it may have had a red re-paint sometime in it’s life. Likely by the second owner who bought this Willys in 1949. He drove it to High School. A red car would be a much more appealing car for a young man in High School.
Everything else about this car appears to be original, including the 34,665 miles on the odometer. Minus it’s fabric top, the body and interior are in very good condition.
This Willys Knight was powered by a 157.6 ci Knight sleeve valve 6 cyl engine. It produced 45hp. Serial number indicates it was built mid-year 1928 in Toledo, OH. This car currently doesn't run but would be another excellent candidate for refurbishing back to original or restoration.

1916 Ford Model T Phaeton. This Model T was totally Lot #159 (Sale Order 160 of 319) 1916 Ford Model T Phaeton. This Model T was totally restored in 1986 and was shown at various Antique Automobile of America events. It garnered both First Junior and Senior awards and a Preservation Award from the organization. The car is a Phaeton with side curtains and has a brass radiator, the last year a brass radiator was used in the Model T's. This is also the first year for headlights operated electrically from the magneto. The car has been only on display since its restoration but is running and drivable. It should have the top taken down and then loaded with family for a nice open-air drive through town!

1931 Ford Model A 400 Convertible. The Model A Ford Lot #160 (Sale Order 161 of 319) 1931 Ford Model A 400 Convertible. The Model A Ford Convertible Sedan was introduced in May 1931, only a few months before the end of Model A production. Only about 5,000 of the 400-A (commonly called the A400) body style was made, and this example is #2287 in the production run so likely was assembled in July 1931. In its restoration the body was completely media blasted and sheet metal repairs made, fenders, running boards, hood and aprons reworked. Missing seats, floor pans, correct original handles, garnish moldings, armrests, stainless steel headlamps, cowl lamps and tail lamps, plus many other correct parts were located, repaired, and refinished. All chassis and mechanical components were disassembled, cleaned, bead-blasted or sandblasted as necessary before repairs and painting. All gears, bearings and seals were replaced in the transmission, rear axle, and driveline. All wheel bearings are new, as are spindle bolts, bushings and tie rod parts and seals. All steering arms are rebuilt with new balls and steering gear has been rebuilt with new bearings, races, and sector gear. Front and rear spring shackles and bushings are new, with rebuilt shock absorbers and original links. Brakes have new linings and all rods, shafts, clevises, and small parts have been restored or replaced. All wiring harnesses and cables are new in the original style. The battery is a new 6v Optima. Horn, light switch and operating rod are restored and replated originals. Steering wheel is a reproduction of the original. This one is ready to drive home!

1963 Thunderbird Landau Lot #160A (Sale Order 162 of 319) The Thunderbird was Ford’s answer to the personal luxury sports car market. The 1963 was the final year for this Third Generation T-Bird, given their body lines, they were nicknamed the “Bullet Birds”! This great original condition Landau T-Bird was added to the Hemken collection in March of 2000. Coming home from Arizona on a transport with “snow-birds” cars, the car’s condition reflects the benefits of the milder West Coast climate. Ford built 63,000+ Thunderbirds in 1963, but only 12,193 Landaus were sold.
Powered by Ford’s big 390ci V8 and backed by their 3-speed Cruise-O Matic, this car was built for comfort on the road. It comes with power windows & power seats, tilt-away steering, AM-FM radio, working AC and tinted glass. It runs and drives well. Cracked exhaust manifolds need replacing.

1956 Lincoln Mark II. Ford Motor Company introduced the Lot #161 (Sale Order 163 of 319) 1956 Lincoln Mark II. Ford Motor Company introduced the Continental in 1956 as its newest division, bringing back the concept of the Lincoln Continental which the company dropped at the end of the 1948 model year. This car was sold in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to a horse farm in Keswick, Iowa, the only one sold from that dealership during the two year production of this top-of-the-line exclusive personal luxury line. Daryl Hemken found the car in Des Moines and purchased it from a Lincoln dealer in 1964. In 1965 the Continental was driven to Michigan from Williams, Iowa with four little boys in the back and from 1970-1971 it was driven by Ann Hemken as her personal car to and from Kamrar, Iowa where she was a teacher. The car was repainted but otherwise is completely original and runs and drives as it was delivered from the factory. The Continental Mark II was the most expensive American-produced car at the time and was marketed to compete with the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. It came only as a two-door hardtop coupe using standard Lincoln drivetrain components with the remainder of the car hand assembled which probably led to its demise in 1957. The Continental Mark II had an extensive list of standard equipment. Equipped with power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, power vent windows, and full instrumentation, including a tachometer and a low-level fuel warning. The Mark II was offered with nineteen standard exterior colors and 43 interior design schemes with five interior fabrics. The factory price for the car was $9695 which is equivalent to $96,200 in today's dollars. The interior featured Bridge of Weir vat dyed leather from the Scottish village which was well known for its exceptional quality and used in the world's most exclusive automobiles. The car used Lincolns 3'68ci Y-block V-8 and the company's 3-speed Turbo-Drive automatic. But those engines weren't just taken from the Lincoln factory production line, but were chosen, disassembled, factory-blueprinted and reassembled following a rigorous quality control and performance inspection. Even the car's vaned wheel covers weren't just regular production items, each one having individually fastened vanes. A total of 2500 Continental Mark II's were built.

1931 Ford Model A Victoria Sedan. In 1938 Melvin (Slim) Lot #162 (Sale Order 164 of 319) 1931 Ford Model A Victoria Sedan. In 1938 Melvin (Slim) Rutherford from Whiting, Indiana was promoting an overhead valve conversion head that would provide a more efficient way to draw power from the venerable Ford 4-cylinder flathead engines. The Rutherford head was among several conversions being offered to racers and hot rodders alike and it was one of these conversion heads that led to the creation of this amazing 1931 Ford Model A Victoria sedan. The story of the car actually starts with the engine. Merv Criser, a retired Wichita fire fighter, bought a Rutherford head from a coworker for one hundred dollars in 1959. The owner didn't really want to sell the OHV head, but a financial problem (rod through the block) and a serious marital problem (he tore the engine down in his wife's laundry room) strongly influenced his decision to let it go. Merv stored the Rutherford head for three decades, until a close friend, who was an avid racing enthusiast, convinced him to part with this rare artifact from the early days of racing. The years passed by, and a decade later Merv re-acquired the Rutherford from the estate sale that followed the death of his good friend in 1999. Merv had his Rutherford back, and it was time to start a project that would properly showcase the conversion head. Since a four-cylinder engine equipped with a Rutherford OHV conversion would sure be something out of the ordinary, he wanted it in a Ford. But which one? Amazingly, the perfect car for the project came along at just the right time. The 1931 Vicky was an older restoration that had been done many years ago and located less than 30 miles from Wichita. It was in good running condition and driven under its own power to Merv's friend Tom Ruggles' shop. Tom helped perform the magic! Now it's a masterpiece of restoration with rust free body, perfect paint, leather interior and a contemporary air conditioning system installed for good measure. The Rutherford is mated to a 200.5 ci Model B engine which was modified to match up with the Rutherford head. Opening the hood produces awe inspiring gasps and further detail about the build can be found at www.RichPennAuctions.com. But it did get better. Dismantling the Vicky revealed a chassis and body that were in excellent condition, with no evidence of any rust or collision damage. The frame was unmodified and straight, and examination of the original sheet metal showed a Model A that had survived for eighty years with no significant deterioration. This was perfect because Merv wanted to be very close to original appearance when the restoration was completed.

1933 Rolls Royce 20/25 Four-Door Phaeton. This car was Lot #163 (Sale Order 165 of 319) 1933 Rolls Royce 20/25 Four-Door Phaeton. This car was manufactured in England but sold in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on December 13, 1933. It has the P-1 Open Touring body which is the largest placed on a Rolls Royce chassis in 1933. The 20/25 features side curtains, and aluminum body, cowl and fenders. The wheels were refinished at Dayton Wheel and painted Inca Silver. This car's history includes the legend that at one time this car was given to President Franklin Roosevelt and was kept at Hyde Park while he was president. It is an overall excellent running vehicle ready to take on its next tour.

1969 Corvette L88 with matching numbers. Chevrolet Lot #164 (Sale Order 166 of 319) 1969 Corvette L88 with matching numbers. Chevrolet built L88 Corvettes for just 3 years, 1967-69. Total production was just 216, with 116 of them in 1969. It was GM's intention to limit this car to just serious race teams. But it was sold to the public. Video of this rare Corvette available at www.RichPennAuctions.com. Paste the link in your browser. This is one of those that made it into public hands and survived. Found stored in a garage for over 20 years, it took five more years and a complete frame off restoration to get it back to the pristine condition it is in now. This is a rare one indeed. Of the 116 built in that final year, many were raced. Many did not survive. And when you screen those remainders and look for a "Triple Black"...a small handful might still exist. This L88 is rare indeed. The tank order sheet survived and 1911 numbers have been checked and matched. The odometer shows 24,300 original miles. The original hardtop is shown. The only detectable variance in the build is the side pipes. They are correct Corvette side pipes added in restoration and can easily be removed and returned to original. Much more information, including a video is available at www.RichPennAuctions.com Corvette VIN 194679S708646.
UPDATE INFORMATION: When this car was audited, the starter was found to be an incorrect L88 starter. A correct L88 starter was located and sent off to be rebuilt. When it was returned, installation was halted by stripped threads in one mounting hole. That hole needs too be correctly filled and retapped. There wasn’t time before the auction. The correct starter comes with. The existing starter works well.

1947 Chrysler Town & Country. A car thought to be once Lot #165 (Sale Order 167 of 319) 1947 Chrysler Town & Country. A car thought to be once owned by Bing Crosby, this fully restored 1947 Chrysler Town and Country was rescued from a life as a service station push vehicle by Daryl Hemken in February 1964. Hemken found the car in Boone, Iowa at a service station with a 2 x 12 board wired to the front bumper. It was being used to push cars into the station's service bay, a far cry from the vehicle's beginnings as one of Chrysler's most luxurious offerings of the era. The car ended up in Boone when a gentleman from that city was traveling in California with his family when his car quit. He found the car on a used car lot, loaded his family up and drove it back to Iowa. The story developed that the car had once belonged to Bing Crosby who, along with Red Skelton, had purchased identical cars on the same day. The car was brought back to the Hemken Collection and in 1989 a full restoration was begun in Ohio by an Amish craftsman, completed 12 years later and in the condition seen today. The car was one of Chrysler's top of line cars, unchanged from 1946 when it was reintroduced, sporting white ash with dark mahogany exterior panels, carefully finished in smooth and shiny clear coat. The window handles have the original folding (fobs) knobs and the interior seat upholstery has the original saran inserts. The exterior has the original twin spotlights and the factory luggage rack. This car is ready to travel in style! When the car was restored it participated in the Meadowbrook Hall Invitational Concours d'Elegance in 2001 and is a recipient of the AACA First Junior Award. It was also displayed at the Salisbury House Concours in 2001 and 2004, winning the people's choice award in 2001. For sheer post-war elegance, the Chrysler Town and Country is hard to beat and this example is ready to show and go.

1948 Playboy. Few people have actually seen an example Lot #166 (Sale Order 168 of 319) 1948 Playboy. Few people have actually seen an example of the 1948 Playboy retractable hardtop convertible because only 97 of the cars were built by the Playboy Motor Company of Buffalo, NY before its financial bankruptcy in 1951. This example, number 79, has 7500 actual miles, was originally owned by one of the founders of the company and features a 40 hp Hercules engine with overdrive, a very rare combination. The Playboy was the first car to have a multi-part retractable hardtop, coil springs and a unit body. The Hemken Collection is the third owner of the car which was purchased in Tampa, Florida in 2000. It was shown at the Salisbury House Concours in 2010. Only 43 of these cars are believed to have survived according to David Kaplan, a grandson of company founder Lou Horowitz, and considered the authority of his grandfather's cars. Horowitz was a Packard dealer who saw a need for a smaller, cheaper car than what he was selling. Using all outsourced parts, the car was built at a cost around $900 and Horowitz recruited two friends to begin production of the vehicle. Only 97 of the actual cars were built, not including a prototype and an unfinished car, but the group failed to develop a dealer network and was forced into bankruptcy. Under-capitalized, the company simply couldn't compete with the better-financed companies offering much more conventional cars. The three passenger convertible has a 90 inch wheelbase, less than a Rambler American, and is 156" long overall riding on 12-inch diameter wheels and weighing 1900 pounds. The car was priced at $985. Running well and driven in the 2021 Williams, IA July 4th celebration, the Playboy was a real crowd pleaser.

1935 Chevrolet 3-Window Coupe Street Rod. A '35 Lot #167 (Sale Order 169 of 319) 1935 Chevrolet 3-Window Coupe Street Rod. A '35 Chevrolet 3-Window coupe is pretty rare to start out with. This one is a classic "Old School" street rod. It was built to drive. Starting in 1968, a number of modifications have resulted in a trophy winning, well built, comfortably drivable street rod. These modifications include a rebuilt GM 4.3L V-6 which was matched to a GM 700R4 transmission. Both have only 7,000 miles on them. The '56 Chevy 3.08 Positraction rear end helps with the 25 highway MPG. The Walker radiator w/elect fan prevents overheating. Corvair front suspension with Oldsmobile Cutlass disc brakes and rear axle with coil over shocks (chrome) helps the ride. Creature comforts include a full heating/air conditioning system that works and a tilt wheel with a '58 Impala steering wheel along with power steering and power brakes. At your fingertips are cruise control, electric seats, windows, trunk lid and radio antenna. The late model radio also plays CDs. Car appearance inside and out is excellent. The interior includes tan vinyl (looks like leather) seat surfaces, side panels, headliner. Floor surfaces are carpeted. All trim, dash components, gauges, and brightwork are in excellent condition. Outside, headlamps have late model halogen headlights in chrome, chrome taillights with LED bulbs and cowl lights have turn signals. Overall appearance is excellent and driving performance will meet expectations! A great street rod that was built to be comfortable and classy on the street! The build achieved that.

1952 Daimler DB18. The Daimler DB18 Barker Special Lot #168 (Sale Order 170 of 319) 1952 Daimler DB18. The Daimler DB18 Barker Special Sports Drophead Coupe' convertible is likely one only a few collectors have seen. Even though the British Daimler Motor Company at one time was considered an equal to the Rolls Royce when it came to quality, sound engineering and prestige. This example was donated to the Hemken Collection by Brenda Steigel in memory of her husband Jim Steigel who died of brain cancer in March 2007. In 1985 Jim and Brenda Steigel traveled to Great Britain where Jim found and purchased this Daimler from a used car dealer, paying the equivalent of $5423 for the vehicle before having it shipped to the U.S., Jim was constantly visiting car museums throughout the country and the Hemken Collection was the last museum he visited before his death, so Brenda donated the car for display as a "tribute to him, his life, his dreams and his accomplishments" British Royalty have driven Daimlers since 1910 and lives on today as a marque in association with Jaguar Motor Cars. This non-running example has all the original components intact including the six cylinder 154ci, 85 hp engine, 4-speed transmission, four wheel drum brakes and right hand drive. Mechanically, the Special Sports was enhanced with twin carburetors and an overdrive epicyclic gearbox. Daimler, following World War II, introduced the 2.5 litre Special Sports in 1948. According to reports of the time it was well received and "much sought after for its ability to transport occupants with high speed and comfort. The drophead body by Barker, with its handsome lines, immediately conveyed an image of sportiness. And whilst the famous fluted radiator was distinctly altered, it did not detract from the Daimler marque. Both inside and out, the attention to detail was far above the standard of the day. This is especially apparent when one looks at the ease in which the hood is operated and the clever sideways occasional seating employed. 608 Special Sports' chassis were produced but only about 500 were given the Barker body. The remainder had Hooper coachwork. This example is the final year for the Drophead Coupe and has been repainted with a new top. It is ready to have its engine and drivetrain revived and the car placed back on the road or the show circuit.

1963 Willys Jeep 2-Door 4WD Wagon Lot #284A (Sale Order 289 of 319) The story of the Jeep begins in 1946. Willys-Overland Motors' President James Mooney announced the "Introduction of a new Jeep Station Wagon." Carrying with this introduction was the post WWII reputation for Jeeps being rugged, safe, easy to maintain and dependable. Mooney described it as a "peoples car." In 1949 they introduced 4WD. Upgrades in engines, from the Go-Devil flatheads of the '40's to the OHV Tornado of the '60's kept the Jeep power current with the market. In the 1960's Americans were buying bigger, stronger and more comfortable performance cars. But the coming gas crisis changed that. A strong argument could be made that the Willys Jeep was the genetic origin for the massive SUV market of today. This 1963 Willys 2-door wagon, with 4WD, was one of the last "pure" Willys Jeeps. Recently purchased for the Hemken Collection (February 2021), this Jeep comes from the western U.S. in virtually original condition. It's rust free, has low miles and has the original factory 230ci OHC 6cyl Tornado engine. The Tornado was overhauled in the last 500 miles. With the original interior and one re-paint, it's now a classic vintage "peoples" car. It runs and drives well and is ready for the next off road adventure.

1955 Studebaker President Speedster. This one-year-only Lot #285 (Sale Order 290 of 319) 1955 Studebaker President Speedster. This one-year-only Studebaker is fully functional except for possibly needing brakes and is one of 2215 produced. It is a member of the President series which was reintroduced to the motoring public after being retired in 1942. The Speedster initially had a run of 20 vehicles that were displayed at car shows around the U.S. with buyer reactions prompting Studebaker to put the car into production at mid-year, allowing Studebaker to offer a competitor to Ford's Thunderbird. The Los Angeles-built Speedster was loaded with standard equipment including a choice of Studebaker Automatic Drive or overdrive transmissions, power steering, power brakes, four-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, "Shoemaker-stitched" diamond-quilted genuine top-grain leather seating, carpeting front and rear, a map pocket (but no glove box), an eight-tube push-button radio, a machine turned instrument panel with Stewart-Warner 160 mph (260 km/h) speedometer and 8,000 rpm tachometer, turn signals, electric clock, tinted glass, cigarette lighter, oil filter and oil bath air cleaner, dual backup lamps, triple horns, two-speed electric wipers, tubeless whitewall tires, simulated wire wheel covers and fog-light bumperettes. List price for the car was $3346 which was about $800 above the top-of-the-line Studebaker President State hardtop. The exterior paint on this car is original along with the original leather back seat. It also has the original wire wheel hubcaps and a chrome trim strip in the center of the hood.

1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible. A member of the Lot #286 (Sale Order 291 of 319) 1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible. A member of the Champion line for Studebaker, this convertible wears the first year "spinner" grille design many immediately recognize as a Studebaker, though Ford had a similar look in 1949. This car was purchased in 1968 by Daryl Hemken remembering how he and Ann Hemken dated in his 1950 Studebaker years earlier. So this car held some special meaning for the couple. It saw frequent summer use and continues to be a good driver that is both comfortable and reliable. The car is powered by a 170ci L-head six cylinder making 85 horsepower with a 3-speed manual transmission. Just over 9300 of these convertibles were built, costing $1981. Exterior sheet metal and interior are all original on this example and is waiting for its next opportunity to serve as a parade car or transport to the nearest ice cream shop. It's easy to drive and makes a good parade car. You just have to remember that the starter button is under the clutch pedal. It is totally original, upholstery included.

1948 Studebaker Champion Convertible. This Studebaker Lot #287 (Sale Order 292 of 319) 1948 Studebaker Champion Convertible. This Studebaker was in a junk yard in 1968. That's where Daryl Hemken found it. He had the 170ci, 80 hp engine overhauled once he got it back home. Just under 10,000 of these models were built with a $2,059 price tag. Studebaker was the first major U.S. manufacturer to introduce redesigned cars after World War II. Raymond Loewy and Virgil Exner were the force behind the dramatic streamlined forms that set Studebaker on a path similar to the groundbreaking Chrysler Airflows of the mid 30's. Soundly conceived and competently executed, they were design leaders in the postwar market. The 1948 was very similar to the 1947 models that were Studebaker's first foray into new styling concepts in the post-war era. Introduced on April 30, 1946 at the posh Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue in New York, the 1947 Studebaker was indeed the first new postwar car from a major U.S. automaker. So yes, the company's tagline, "First by far with a postwar car" was entirely appropriate. The rest of the nation's automakers, busily churning out mildly facelifted versions of their 1942 models into a seller's market, wouldn't have their new offerings ready until the model 1948 and 1949 model years. Studebaker beat them all to the punch. Studebaker built on this styling while staying with it's tried-and-true powerplants. The Champion line used "A new kind of motoring" as it's marketing theme this year. And it still is...a nice running and driving Studebaker, needing break work!

1957 Packard Clipper Town Sedan. The 1957 lineup of Lot #288 (Sale Order 293 of 319) 1957 Packard Clipper Town Sedan. The 1957 lineup of Packard automobiles was based on Studebaker models using some restyling, rebadging and the addition of more luxurious interiors. 1956 had ended Packard production when the engine and transmission factory was leased to Curtiss-Wright Corporation and the Detroit East Grand Boulevard assembly plant was sold. Only two models this year carried the Packard name, the 4-door Clipper Town Sedan and the Clipper Country Sedan Station Wagon. Carryover parts from earlier Packard models included taillights, wheel covers, block letters on the hood, instruments and radios. The headlight "eyebrows" and front bumper assembly were styled for a Packard appearance. A 1955 hood ornament was modified to fit the Studebaker hood shape and the long, wide side trim was designed to be reminiscent of recent Packard trim. A stamped overlay for the lower rear fenders also gave them a body crease line suggestive of the side trim of the 1956 Caribbean. Packard's revisions in 1955 were accompanied by bills for new tooling, technology, and factory expansion. They were costs that Packard could no longer bear alone, so the company's president, James Nance, decided to purchase Studebaker, but this actually brought more problems. When sales dropped to 13,000 cars in the depressed market of 1956, Nance bailed out. The Curtiss-Wright Corporation acquired Studebaker-Packard, primarily as a tax write-off, and quickly decided to consolidate its holdings at Studebaker's South Bend facilities. For the next two years the Packard became a badge-engineered car, built off a Studebaker platform. Though technically a fine automobile, and certainly rare and unique, this type of Packard was unable to attract customer interest. After 1958, the name of Packard disappeared from the automotive scene. Many say the passing was unavoidable, for how could a car with enduring quality and grace survive in an age in which the basis of success is planned obsolescence? If you ask the man who owns one, he's likely to answer that Packard chose an honorable death over acceptance of mediocrity. This Town Sedan was purchased in 1977 from Earl Riley in Des Moines, Iowa and doesn't run but all the factory components are in place.

1958 Packard Hawk. This was the very last year a car Lot #289 (Sale Order 294 of 319) 1958 Packard Hawk. This was the very last year a car carried the Packard name and the Packard Hawk was at the high end of the price range for Studebaker-Packard. Daryl Hemken purchased this car in 1970 from a farmer in New Providence, Iowa who was the original owner. The car came equipped with a Paxton supercharger, but the family had it removed to "slow it down". It has been reinstalled and helps the engine produce 275 horsepower. A McCulloch supercharger was in the trunk. The Packard Hawk was produced for just one year and had leather upholstery and headliner. The only thing changed on this car is the foam cushioning in the seats has been replaced so it is an unrestored original or "survivor" in today's parlance. Restyled by Duncan McRae, Studebaker-Packard's finances dictated that the changes for 1958 be made as cheaply as possible. Quad headlights, as on Studebakers, were achieved by affixing pods to the previous year's front fenders designed for two headlights. In the rear, McRae attempted to follow the tailfin craze established by Chrysler's 1957 "Forward Look" by crafting outward-canted steel fin extensions that were mounted to the tops of the existing vertical rear fenders. 1956 Clipper taillight units continued to be used. Packards also adopted a low, wide "fishmouth" grille to further distinguish them from their Studebaker cousins. Other notable changes included the hardtop's astonishingly attractive rooflines, very similar to concurrent Chrysler/DeSoto designs. Also, the switch to a one-piece drive shaft allowed Studebaker engineers to flatten the floor, which also allowed flattening of the roof panels on sedan and hardtop models. Packard (and Studebaker) also switched to 14" wheels so most 1958 models are noticeably lower. The Packard Hawk had just 588 built and the last Packard rolled off the assembly line in South Bend, Indiana on July 25, 1958. And, it's still rolling today.

1956 Packard Patrician. Purchased from Delbert Schroder Lot #290 (Sale Order 295 of 319) 1956 Packard Patrician. Purchased from Delbert Schroder in Sibley, Iowa, this is what is considered the last "real" Packard, a company that for years had held the distinction of being among the mightiest luxury automakers. The Patrician had minor changes that were mostly cosmetic, including the hood bird streamlined to the max. Just below, a crest replaces the letters formerly used with the 55 Series. Front fender headlamp brows are extended forward, increasing the appearance of overall length. Grille is restyled with larger openings, backed up by a mesh panel that was initially made of chrome-plated steel, but Packard quickly switched to a gold-anodized aluminum material to keep up with Cadillac. Front bumper guards are moved outward, air opening in lower valence is enlarged and also includes a mesh panel. Ribbed stainless side trim (aka - Reynolds Wrap) is extended all the way to the taillight. New gas door molding features a concealed finger cove. Window finish moldings are eliminated from top of sedan doors and center pillars, in favor of a wider molding for the roof drip rail. Brushed stainless side roof trim and corresponding sheet metal gusset allow for a more streamlined roof pillar; former circle-vee ornament was replaced with a crest here. Fender skirts and lower body moldings are standard. Trunk lid is squared off, and circle-vee ornamentation replaces former trunk handle. V-shaped ornaments on taillights replaced by a hexagonal red reflex. All exterior script plates are now gold-plated. New electric door locks were available with electric (power) window lifts, but on sedans only. Torsion-Level suspension becomes standard equipment in May of 1956. This car runs, powered by Packard's 374ci 290 horsepower engine and it drives nicely but does need brakes.

1948 Lincoln Continental 2-Door Cabriolet. With a total Lot #291 (Sale Order 296 of 319) With a total production of 452, this Continental Cabriolet is easily as rare as many of the 40s and 50s cars Daryl Hemken managed to find. He was searching out these collector cars well before many were even thought to be collectible! This one came into his hands, strangely enough, during the dark of a Saturday night when he found it in Des Moines. He inspected it in the dark but then told the owner he would buy it only if it was delivered to Williams, Iowa by the following day. That Sunday morning, at 7 a.m., he had a new acquisition and the Series 876H Lincoln was part of his collection. It now runs well on a rebuilt engine and is waiting to head down the road, sleek, low and with the top, down! The Lincoln has a 305ci V-12 engine (rebuilt in 1990s) packing 130 horsepower which was not offered again by Lincoln after the 1948 year. Lincoln was in the midst of a total rework of their model lineup so the 1948 models didn't get many updates from the year before (or the two years before that), but the Lincoln still held on to its luxury car designation. This car has push button door latches, power windows and top with dimensions much larger that the rest of the Lincoln lineup. Wtih a hood seven inches longer (to fit that V-12 engine), the car stretched 218 total inches. It sits about three inches lower than the rest of the '48 Lincoln models and has a frame design that "incorporates bridge-floor construction with double box section side rails for utmost rigidity and high torsional strength" according to 1948 advertisements. The Lincoln was repainted and upholstered but needs a new top. And as the Lincoln advertising said, "Your perfect introduction...anywhere."

1953 Dodge Coronet 4-Door Sedan. It's not often what Lot #292 (Sale Order 297 of 319) 1953 Dodge Coronet 4-Door Sedan. It's not often what is considered a "Plain Jane" car has any special significance in the collector car community, but this '53 Dodge Coronet is just one of three Chrysler built to use as a demonstration model for the company's air conditioning system. Chrysler had been one of the early innovators in air conditioning systems after Walter Chrysler had a system invented and designed for his new Chrysler Building in New York City. Systems in the 1930s were bulky and complex so Chrysler went to his engineering staff to come up with a new way to cool buildings, The Airtemp Corporation was born from that effort and the systems were also developed to be installed in vehicles. Some early vehicle air conditioning systems appeared in the late 1930s but until 1953 the major manufacturers didn't introduce systems that were true options. Ford and GM launched factory A/C systems for Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Lincoln and Chrysler put a system in the 1953 Imperial. But Chrysler's system was different from the GM and Ford systems and the company wanted to show the public what they had and why it was better. Which brings us to the 1953 Dodge Coronet Daryl Hemken managed to find in Arizona with just 16,000 miles on the odometer. Chrysler created three demonstration vehicles that were shown around the country with the air conditioning system installed. This is one of those three and it was actually sold by the company to Winnie Hogg in Coralville, PA on June 12, 1953. Chrysler's Airtemp systems utilized a trunk-mounted evaporator with fresh air inlets located on the rear fender, a much tidier installation than the chunky scoops Ford and Lincoln employed to draw in fresh air. The evaporator both discharged cooled air and recirculated inside air through the rear parcel shelf. Unlike GM and Lincoln, Chrysler did not use ceiling mounted diffusers with clear plastic ducts to distribute the air, but discharged the air right into the parcel shelf. To avoid freezing the rear passengers' necks, cold air was discharged through the center register, while the outboard ones were used for air return (opposite from Lincoln and GM systems). Even though Chrysler had a distinct advantage with their Airtemp systems being well known in the residential and commercial use markets, Chrysler wanted to expand its use of the systems into its regular car lines and these Coronets worked perfectly as potential demonstrators. This one-of-kind car still runs and drives and has had one repaint. All the components are in place as installed at the factory.

1947 Dodge Custom Convertible. The 1947 cars were Lot #293 (Sale Order 298 of 319) 1947 Dodge Custom Convertible. The 1947 cars were essentially unchanged because there was not much point in trying to change a car they could scarcely produce enough of as it was. Every car offered up to the public by Dodge was eagerly snapped up, demand was just that high. With the seller's market still going as it had before, most dealers accessorized the cars to the max (and generously padded the mark-up). Some unscrupulous dealers sold themselves the cars, drove them a few weeks then sold them at very inflated prices as "used cars" since car prices were technically still held down by government mandate. Shortages of everything possible, inflation, strikes both large and small, even riots began to erupt across the nation. Despite that, Dodge managed to churn out more cars in 1947 than 1946 with an estimated 243,000 cars (about 50 percent more than 1946). Dodge produced 9500 of these cars from 1946-1948. The Custom convertible was purchased from a service station in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1971 and up until that time Daryl Hemken said he had never seen one before. All models were powered by a 230 cid inline six-cylinder engine producing 102 horsepower. A three-speed manual transmission was standard but this one has the optional Fluid Drive transmission. This car has had new paint and upholstery and runs and drives well.

1947 Oldsmobile Series 66 Convertible. Purchased on Lot #294 (Sale Order 299 of 319) 1947 Oldsmobile Series 66 Convertible. Purchased on September 30, 1965 from a young man who was drafted into military service. He told the Hemkens he wanted to see the car preserved and it has been. The car is completely original except for one re-paint. The engine does run and the car could be drivable. It has that look that would cause heads to turn on a drive through town! The car has a 238ci six-cylinder engine featuring a Hydra-Matic transmission. This transmission was developed by GM during World War II for army tanks and other combat vehicles needing reliability and performance. Standard features for the Oldsmobile were safety glass, spare wheel and tire, dual horns, vacuum booster pump and cigarette lighter. A special feature of the engine is the down draft carburetor and an automatic choke and fast idle system.

1948 Pontiac Torpedo Deluxe Convertible. This Lot #295 (Sale Order 300 of 319) 1948 Pontiac Torpedo Deluxe Convertible. This convertible was purchased in May, 1971 and is the last in the line of Torpedo named Pontiacs that extended back to 1940. This particular car is complete including the ivory steering wheel and chrome facial tissue dispenser. The Torpedo had more chrome trim than any other GM vehicle at that time and this car has stainless steel full window surround, front fender stainless, wheel trim rings and chrome gravel guards. Pontiac, like all American automotive manufacturers, was wholly dedicated to the war effort until 1945. Accordingly, when Pontiac introduced its new line for 1946, as every other builder did, it was essentially a 1942 model with a new grille, fenders, and trim. They did not have to do much, as demand was also at its highest point ever with newly returning servicemen and their families literally buying anything that they could get their hands on. The refreshed 1942 design would stay in production for a solid three years, remaining tremendously popular for each of those years. To many, the streamlined Torpedo design of this model represents post-war Pontiac design at its best. It has a wonderfully aggressive, purely American appearance, which when paired with the famous power of the Pontiac straight eight and the iconic "Silver Streaks" on its hood represents the best of 1940s Detroit motoring. Currently not running.

1942 Buick Special Sedan. This was an abbreviated year Lot #296 (Sale Order 301 of 319) 1942 Buick Special Sedan. This was an abbreviated year for Buick and all the other automakers with Buick production ending February 4, 1942 after the U.S. entered World War II. This Special Sedan was purchased from the original Phoenix, Arizona owner in 2002 with 17,500 confirmed miles on the odometer. It runs and drives very nicely. The Buick was part of the 41SE Series and has the Century interior which was used on only two models in this series. The five main bearing 248ci overhead valve straight-eight engine is mated to a 3-speed synchromesh manual transmission. The engine features dual Stromberg carburetors. Much of its life this car was warehoused in Idaho which may explain why it has such low mileage. The factory price for these Special Sedans was $1287 and 2286 of these were produced before the factory was converted for military production.

1947 Buick Roadmaster Convertible. As with many of the Lot #297 (Sale Order 302 of 319) 1947 Buick Roadmaster Convertible. As with many of the immediate domestic postwar vehicles, the Buick Roadmaster changed little from 1946. When postwar automobile production resumed in the 1946 model year, chrome was more sparingly applied, swept-back fenders were fitted to sedans as well as coupes, and a war-inspired "bombsight" hood ornament was adopted. The instrument panel was two-toned with woodgrain facings except on convertibles which used body-colored panels. The convertible top and front windows on this Buick are hydraulically operated and the car sports original paint and interior. Only 38,000 miles have been recorded on the car's odometer and the car looks much the same as it was when Daryl Hemken purchased the car from a couple in Des Moines on December 22, 1965. The couple said they had just sold their blue house which matched the Buick's blue, so they had to sell the car because they couldn't bear to look at it. This convertible is powered by a nicely running Fireball 320ci straight 8, with 144 horsepower. The 3-speed column shift transmission makes for a comfortably managed road auto.

1947 Hudson Commodore Brougham Convertible. Only 361 of Lot #298 (Sale Order 303 of 319) 1947 Hudson Commodore Brougham Convertible. Only 361 of these top-of-the-line Hudson convertibles were built making it another rare member of the Hemken Collection. It was originally purchased by the postmistress in Slater, Iowa, but was sold to a second owner who had to have a center main bearing replaced. Daryl Hemken discovered the car under a tarp behind a shed in Oskaloosa, Iowa while the family was traveling to a family reunion. Of course he purchased the car and drove it back home. The car's odometer shows an original 33,000 miles and the Commodore is in excellent overall condition. The 212ci L-head six-cylinder engine produces 102 horsepower. It has a new top and leather seat covers (30 years ago) and features a swiveling front passenger seat, hydraulic control for operating the top and a special luggage compartment with room for a vertically stored spare tire and wheel. Hudson automobiles were more fully equipped than competitive makes with door arm rests, twin air-horns, ashtrays, windshield wipers, stop lights, locking glove box, sealed beam headlights, and deep pile carpeting. Commodore and Commodore Customs added foam rubber seat cushions (Hudson was the first automaker to introduce foam seat cushions), door-step courtesy lights, rear arm rest in sedans and gold etched lettering on the dashboard panel.

1950 Hudson Convertible. At $2,809 this Hudson model Lot #299 (Sale Order 304 of 319) 1950 Hudson Convertible. At $2,809 this Hudson model was the most expensive in the lineup selling some 1100+ in the third year of Hudson's completely new body design. That design heralded the introduction of Hudson's "step in" platform which proved to be a popular draw for car buyers. This convertible was purchased from Delmer Cox in 1967 and repainted its original color in 2001. It is powered by the 262ci Super Six L-head six cylinder producing 123 horsepower. Another Hemken Collection convertible that runs well and is ready to go on a "top down trip" for a cold lemonade! Special features include the pop-out cigarette lighter, special dash and window molding trim and an electric clock. The car was purchased in 1975 and in 2003 upholstery work was done.

1948 Packard Super 8 Victoria Convertible. Packard Lot #300 (Sale Order 305 of 319) 1948 Packard Super 8 Victoria Convertible. Packard promoted the 1948 Super 8 as "A new performance thrill awaits the buyers of the spirited Super Eight, the motor car that makes distances disappear!" The company sold over 4700 of this model its first year which for the time was impressive. A 288ci, 145 hp inline 8 cylinder engine powers this "spirited" Packard which is all original except for the seat covers. Daryl Hemken purchased the car in 1966 following the publication of a newspaper article about his collection. This Packard is not currently running, but well worth the needed love & attention to return it to its deserved glory. A reader in Aberdeen, South Dakota, contacted Daryl that he had a '49 Packard for sale. Daryl bout it and drove the car home. Daryl's interest in Packards started to take off after a fellow Packard enthusiast said, "Postwar Packards aren't worth shed room." Daryl decided then to find any Packard he could and bring it home.

1947 Mercury Club Convertible. Leather upholstery was Lot #302 (Sale Order 307 of 319) 1947 Mercury Club Convertible. Leather upholstery was standard in this series 79M Mercury convertible. The car line was begun in 1939 so was relatively young when this model was produced as a middle of the line between Ford and Lincoln. This was purchased for the Hemken Collection in 1971 from a fellow collector in North Dakota and is in good running condition. Interior and exterior are factory original and the hydraulic top has been replaced. The power plant is Ford's legendary 239ci flathead V-8, producing a dependable 100 horsepower. This great convertible is in good running condition. The Mercury was Edsel Ford's penultimate automotive hurrah. Edsel, only son of Henry Ford, had joined his father's company at age 21, first as secretary, then president four years later. In fact, Henry Ford never yielded control. The younger Ford was delegated projects in which his father had no interest, like beautifying the prestige marque Lincoln that Ford acquired in 1922 and shepherding the radical Lincoln-Zephyr into production for 1936. Edsel hired Ford's first stylist, E.T. "Bob" Gregorie in 1929 and the two men oversaw all of the company's aesthetic triumphs of the 1930s, the Zephyr, its lesser sibling the 1937 Ford and the Zephyr's derivative Lincoln Continental. Among these was the Mercury. Conceived as a gap-filler between Ford and the Lincoln-Zephyr, the Mercury was initially considered as a prestige Ford model, not a marque in its own right. But by the time of its introduction in October 1938, it had become Mercury, Ford's big brother, bearing a family resemblance but with gentle styling cues from Gregorie that set it apart.

1960 Chevrolet El Camino Pickup. Manufactured only in Lot #303 (Sale Order 308 of 319) 1960 Chevrolet El Camino Pickup. Manufactured only in 1959 & '60 and 1964-1987. The early years are rare. The intro in 1959 was in response to the success of Ford's Ranchero pickup. Built on Chevy's Brookwood two-door station wagon platform, the cab and cargo bed were adapted. It was designed to be "Car comfortable" but offer utility as well. It did both. After introduction in 1959 and production of over 22,000, the 1960 Camino sales dropped sharply to 14,100. So this is a rare survivor. Always well maintained with modest custom touches, wheels, some striping and interior freshened, this Camino has a lot of style for a trip cross country or to the hardware store. It runs and is ready to make any and all of those trips. Powered by a small block V-8 engine with optional Powerglide transmission and 40,300 miles on the odometer, this Camino has a lot of life left in it.

1950 Mercedes 170S Cabriolet B. Only 20 of these Lot #305 (Sale Order 310 of 319) 1950 Mercedes 170S Cabriolet B. Only 20 of these Mercedes were ever built and this one retains the original floor mats and paper sides. It was acquired in 1969 from Warren Loder of St. Paul, Minnesota. A 108ci L-head inline four-cylinder 52 hp engine, four-speed manual transmission, transverse leaf-spring front suspension, swing axle rear suspension with coil springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes are the foundation for this model. This rare Mercedes has new brakes, runs and is driveable. Mercedes-Benz long recognized the importance of carrying a design theme across an entire line of cars. The convertible models of the 170S from the early 1950s were scaled-down versions of the larger 300S, with the exception of the freestanding headlamps. The curves of the wings, the tail, and the beltline molding were all the same, but in smaller form. The result was a spectacular smaller car, which, thanks to its racing-inspired suspension, high-compression engine, and all-synchromesh transmission, was sporty, comfortable, and fun to drive. The car offered here is a Cabriolet B, referring to its rear seat and rear quarter windows, which improve passenger comfort and visibility.

1959 Morgan series II 4/4 Roadster. Lot #305A (Sale Order 311 of 319) Here’s a classic British sports car with genetics spiraling back to 1910. From the original 3-wheel Morgan Runabout to this classic low slung 2-seater, With racing and speed records stacking up in the first half of the 20th Century, Morgans became a favorite for UK auto collectors as well as collectors around the world.
This roadster was purchased in Florida in the 1980’s and found it’s way to Iowa where it’s been in storage since. On occasion it was taken to parades and community showings. Today it’s in much the same condition as when found.
The body and interior are in very good original condition, with no visible damage excepting fractured enamel paint. This ’59 model came with wire wheels and the side-valve 1172 cc Ford 100E engine. It was used with a Ford three-speed gearbox. The engine produced 36 bhp. Yes, this lightweight low to the ground sports car could perform!
It shows the Fergus Imported Cars, New York, NY tag and their Stock No. 21939. In the cockpit, looking through the wood trimmed steering wheel, the original Stewart Warner odometer shows just 2,156 miles.
Lights & turn signals not working. Wiring needs attention. In running condition, With just 386 of this model built between 1955 & 1960, and that’s a very small run with the Anglia engine, this roadster would be an excellent candidate for preservation or complete restoration.

1970 Porsche 914 Roadster. This was a one owner car Lot #306 (Sale Order 312 of 319) 1970 Porsche 914 Roadster. This was a one owner car before it was acquired for the Hemken Collection from a widow in Webster City, Iowa. The car was purchased new in 1970 by her son who drove it for a few years before his brother drove it back to Iowa in 1975. His parents continued to drive the car on special occasions but when the husband passed, the car went to Williams, Iowa to become part of the collection. This roadster has a removable hard top that is stowed in a rear compartment. With its horizontally opposed four-cylinder 102ci mid-engine located from the rear, the car uses the front space for luggage. The five-speed transmission and fuel injection are in place, but the car needs a serious tune before it will run.

1991 Chevrolet S10 Pickup. The Chevy S10 pickup joined Lot #308 (Sale Order 314 of 319) 1991 Chevrolet S10 Pickup. The Chevy S10 pickup joined the Chevrolet lineup in 1982, with the first generation production lasting until 1993. Chevy was the first of the big three to build a compact pickup. The S10 quickly built a reputation for being affordable, durable and dependable. The second and final generation of S10's built in the US ran from 1994 - 2004. That good reputation carried through the entire US production run. So it stood to good reason that when Daryl Hemken was in AZ in the mid 1990's, he was interested when he spotted one at an auction. He brought it home intending it to be Ann's "Garden Pickup". It came with a 2.5L, 105 horsepower Iron Duke four cylinder motor. It was backed with a 5-speed transmission. Since it came from AZ, it was no surprise it also came with AC. Perfect for doing garden work in those warm Iowa summers. It's proven its durability, with the odometer showing just over 109,000 miles. It continues to run well and was given a fresh paint job in 2005. So it could look good running for another 100K miles!

1986 Mercedes-Benz 350 SDL. Here's one of the Lot #309 (Sale Order 315 of 319) 1986 Mercedes-Benz 350 SDL. Here's one of the Mercedes-Benz luxury models. This model is powered by their six cylinder turbo diesel. Benz brought their diesel technology to the U.S. in 1949. They started with an inline 4 cylinder, then 5 cylinders in 1975 adding turbocharging shortly thereafter. In 1986 they brought in the S-class diesel. Now it's a 3.5L inline that grew to 6 cylinders! And it too is turbocharged. These cars were built to run long, hard and to last. They did. This one is an example. This was a one owner car donated to the museum in 2020. Impeccably maintained. Beautiful interior. Very nice outside. It actually looks like new. But the odometer shows 300,000 plus miles. If you didn't look at the odometer....you'd never guess the mileage. It's mechanically sound and impeccably maintained. AC doesn't work. Six cylinder turbo has plenty of power. It's an S class!

1970 Mercury Marquis Convertible. Considered to be in Lot #310 (Sale Order 316 of 319) 1970 Mercury Marquis Convertible. Considered to be in the Luxury class, sport open-top car, this Mercury took that title seriously. The engine was Ford's "Big Block" 429ci with Select-shift 3-speed automatic. It weighed 4,600 lbs, so it needed the 360hp. The size, weight and power made it a great road car. It still could be! Purchased in 1977 this original Mercury comes with AC...as well as the natural AC, a convertible top!! The odometer shows 87,000 miles and it has a solid body, new brakes, tires, water pump, radiator, carburetor, ignition and other components to make it roadworthy. But recently it suffered an over heating episode so currently it's not running. When running it drives well.

1969 Cadillac DeVille Convertible. Purchased from Lot #311 (Sale Order 317 of 319) 1969 Cadillac DeVille Convertible. Purchased from Howard Ruble Modern Classics of Woodburn, Iowa June 1, 1977. In the mid 70's when it was announced that domestic makers would no longer be making convertibles, Daryl Hemken began purchasing the last year models to add to his collection. These classics were designed & built well before the oil embargo. So a 472ci engine that pounded out 375hp was just another great selling feature. And at 4,600 lbs, it needed the power. Base price was $5,740. So your wallet needed some horsepower too. Restyled in the Eldorado image, it needed to look long & sleek. So rear quarters were extended to achieve that. The hood was also extended 12". This model came with variable-ratio power steering, dual power brakes, power windows, center front arm rest, rear center arm rests, two-way power operated horizontal front seat adjusters, dual front and rear cigarette lighters. Everything needed to maximize driver luxury and comfort. Original except for one re-paint, including nice original top and interior. The Hemken Collection purchased this as a relatively new car (like the '70 Mercury and the '72 Ford), since domestic convertible production was said to be stopping after 1976. Looks like lower miles and needs exhaust and misc to be roadworthy. Ann Hemken had back issues so appreciated the comfortable high back seats in this vehicle. Photos show road and gravel reflection in mirror-like chrome finish on bumpers and body chrome. Not damage.

1973 Lincoln Continental. 1973 was a record setting Lot #312 (Sale Order 318 of 319) 1973 Lincoln Continental. 1973 was a record setting year for U.S. automakers. And it was good for Lincoln too. Up 28 percent over '72 with 12,667 more units sold. So almost 59,000 of these entered the marketplace. This one was purchased in 1996 by Phil Hemken out of Chicago and then sold to Steve with 56,000 miles on it. It was used as a family car for 5 or so years and Steve's daughter learned to drive in it. This is an original car, but has been repainted. Engine runs good and the car drives well. Has cruise and AC and odometer shows 122,000 miles. Proper Lincoln with 460ci engine with 219hp and all the trimmings. Driver quality with rust repair. Working AC, cruise, windows, etc. New sprints and shocks to make it drive well. A dependable car that was driven regularly and still could fill that bill.

1972 Ford LTD 400 Convertible. This car was purchased Lot #313 (Sale Order 319 of 319) 1972 Ford LTD 400 Convertible. This car was purchased from Howard Shepard of Webster City in 1977 as part of the late model Hemken Convertible Collection. One repaint on a solid car. Lower miles with original top and interior, 402ci engine, power steering and brakes, Cruise-O-Matic transmission and power brakes. Is a good hobby car. Needs detailed to be ready for the road. Last time it was used was in the summer of 1981 when Steve Hemken went to see his girlfriend (now wife) Carrie in Minneapolis. Reportedly, he had a nice ride on the freeway with the top down both ways.
