Solid domed bisque head with flanged neck, brown sculpted boyish hair with long tousled bangs, small brown glass sleep eyes, painted curly lashes, tinted brows, accented nostrils, open mouth with bow-shaped lips, two porcelain lower teeth, muslin body, composition lower limbs, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Copr by J.L. Kallus Made in Germany 1394/. Comments: Baby Bo-Kaye, designed by the American sculptor Joseph Kallus, circa 1925, made in Germany; the wonderful Kallus doll models ranged from expressive bisque dolls such as this Baby Bo-Kaye to colorful composition dolls of the 1930s such as Jeep (lot #501 of this catalog). Value Points: rare model with wonderfully expressive and endearing features, choice bisque and modeling.

The wheels have original paper labels "Fabrication Parisienne A.W. Modele Depose", and pull-string cord is imprinted with reference to the 1900 era French patisserie Au Poussin Bleu in Marseille. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Columbian Doll presented by Emma Adams at the Columbian Exposition of 1892, created in her cottage industry in New York, notably became the first American doll to win the prestigious Gold Medal. Condition: very good overall, some dustiness, small stockinette tear at right eye brow. Comments: attributed to Julia Beecher, of Elmira, New York, circa 1890, made in the sewing circle of the Elmira, New York, Congregational Church 1893 to 1910, with proceeds donated to missionary groups, thus earning the dolls the name of Missionary Rag Babies. Condition: very good overall, some light dustiness. Comments: the doll was patented by Ruth Mackay of Pittsburgh on May 4, 1926, #1583408, simply titled "Head for Rag Dolls" and described as "having a more life-like expression than dolls as heretofore constructed". The doll was marketed as "Baby Sister" and made in the workshops of the Misses Tebbetts, late 1920s. Value Points: rare early cloth doll is seldom found.

Krieger Novelty of California, a line of 18 pull-toys with realistic bucking movement were introduced in 1926 and are very rare to find.

Condition: fair/good, original finish albeit typical craquelure and complexion fading. Comments: Martha Wellington, of Massachusetts, who patented the doll in 1883; the intricate construction of the doll and its great scarcity today are indicative of very limited production at the time. Value Points: very distinctive construction with compelling presence of the rare American 19th century. Included is his own toy glass-eyed wooden horse by Schoenhut.

Each is all-bisque depicting a chubby naked baby in amusing variations of pose, each with sculpted hair with side-coiled braids, sculpted green hair bow at the crown, painted facial features, large side-glancing googly eyes, tiny impish smile, sculpted blue wings in heart-shape design. Condition: generally excellent, one has chips on three fingers. Comments: Germany, circa 1915, attributed to Hertel and Schwab, the figures were inspired by the popular Kewpie and incorporated many of the Kewpie features and designs. Value Points: included is little girl crawling out of egg shell which has open top for use as candy container and two googlies with attached bases.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 192. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1892, the model was registered by the firm in that year; it is unknown who actually produced the bisque heads for Kammer and Reinhardt during this era, but its close resemblance to Kestner suggests that firm as firm as a possible source. Value Points: hard-to-find model with beautifully-painted brows and lips, original early body.

These include: zebra, brown horse, pig, double-hump camel, orange-striped tiger, lion, elephant, rhinoceros, brown bear, hippopotamus, buffalo, ostrich, white horse with rider platform, goat, spotted leopard, donkey, along with acrobat lady, ringmaster, Black Dude, Hobo, and clown, and with two ladders, two chairs, two barrels, two drums and one ball. Very good/excellent condition. Schoenhut, the "reduced size" circus of the firm was introduced in 1923 in a cost-cutting effort and remained in production until 1935.

Dark brown mohair bear with amber glass eyes, embroidered nose with metal ring for leash, has hinged legs with hidden metal wheels allowing the bear to be pulled along in a brisk walking action. The bear has original red metal tag "DRGM D.R. Patent Trippel Trappel BTE SGDG Engl. Patent, Amerik Pat. Appd For" and with Bing logo on reverse side. Excellent condition, mohair well preserved. Germany, Bing of Bavaria, circa 1912, the toy was made in a variety of different animals including dogs, but is very rare to find especially in this fine condition.
