This pistol was issued to two Generals in its service life. It was first issued to Brigadier General Charles Harold Royce (1902-1979) until 1950, when it was issued to Brigadier General Phillips Waller Smith (1906-1963).

Charles Harold Royce served the U.S. Army in China, Germany, and Japan.  Little of his official record can be found.  In 1931, he married Mary Reed Royce, granddaughter of famed U.S. army surgeon Dr. Walter Reed.

Phillips Waller Smith received a commission in the U.S. army in 1930 after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  He transferred from the Cavalry to the Ordnance Department in 1933, and would take command as Chief of the Ordnance Section under the Undersecretary of War in 1942.  By 1945, after some time in Europe, he became chief of the current procurement branch of the War Department General Staff in Washington.

After the creation of the U.S. Air Force in 1947, he was appointed special assistant to Lieutenant General Howard A. Craig, the deputy chief of staff for Materiel of the U.S. Air Force.  After several years of excellent service, he was appointed comptroller of Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.  He retired from service as a Major General.

**This pistol retains much of the original arsenal blue finish.  Grips are excellent.  The bore is excellent.  Markings are sharp and clear.  Overall a great pistol with Military history, and I'Ded to two Brigadier Generals.**

U.S. Model 1917 Trench Knife of Joseph Steinmetz (1870-1928) U.S. Model 1917 Trench Knife of Joseph Steinmetz (1870-1928)

U.S. Model 1917 Trench Knife of Joseph Steinmetz (1870-1928)

Lot #75 (Sale Order 73 of 262)

8.75" triangular blued blade.  Seven-stud steel guard with contoured wood grip.  Tip of guard marked "U.S./L.F.&C./1917.  Correct Jewell leather scabbard with steel throat and chape.

Joseph Allison Steinmetz would enjoy an adventurous career as an inventor, soldier, military advisor, and collector, filled experiences that were usually reserved for dime store adventure novels and newspaper serials.

During the Spanish-American War, Steinmetz served as a recruiting officer in Philadelphia with the Army Corps of Engineers.  After the war, he traveled to Cuba and worked actively under the direction of Clara Barton to care for the hundreds of orphans and displaced persons, also known as "reconcentrados" who had suffered greatly from the war.  After his return, he became active in the Red Cross Society of Philadelphia, which had greatly aided his work.

An engineer by trade, he founded Janney, Steinmetz & Company in 1893, and soon became one of the most prominent dealers of steel and iron in Philadelphia. In this capacity he developed a love for aviation, and his firm would provide experimental models for Dr. Samuel Pierpont Langley, aviation pioneer and founder of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.

His constant tinkering and planning drew the attention of the U.S. Army, for whom Steinmetz wrote Submarine Problems and Torpedo Defense as an advisory document detailing the possible issues in combating the newly-developed art of submarine warfare. This treatise was presented to Woodrow Wilson and then-Chairman of the Navy Board on Inventions for National Defense, Thomas Edison.  He would later take on membership in the Submarine Defense Association and the National Research Council.

In November, 1917, Steinmetz was commissioned a Major in the U.S. Ordnance Reserve, and in December of that year was sent to France in cooperation with the Ordnance Department and War Industries Board to study aviation factories and French ordnance depots.  It was during his time in that country that he carried this knife. Upon his return to America, he resumed his industrial work and would continue to be called upon to advise the President and his cabinet.

Steinmetz died in July 1928, and is buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, with his wife, Oma.

German Third Reich Hitler Youth Knife

Lot #114 (Sale Order 112 of 262)

5.5" blade without ricasso.  Nickel-plated fittings with black riveted bakelite grips and hand-fitted Hitler Youth insignia.  Reverse of blade etched with "Blut und Ehre!" (Blood and iron) motto, with obverse showing maker's mark of J.A. Henckels, Solingen.  Black painted steel scabbard.

As the NSDAP sought to control all aspects of German life, it began the Jugendbund der NSDAP  (Youth Group of the NSDAP) in 1922.  By 1926, it had taken on the name Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth), the name by which it would be known to history.  From 1936 to 1945, it was the official (and conveniently, the only) youth organization of Germany, and in 1939, membership was compulsory for all boys aged 14-18.  If parents refused, they were subject to investigation by authorities.  At their meetings, youth would be indoctrinated with Nazi ideology, and would also attend large training camps and rallies, preparing them for life in either the army, the Nazi government, or the workforce.  At its height, the Hitler Youth had over 8 million members.  During Germany's last stand, Hitler Youth members as young as 12 years of age were drafted into the army to defend Berlin.  These units suffered heavy casualties, with the "Youth Brigade" having only two survivors.

**Good condition overall.  Some minor wear and dulling of plating with some scratches to blade.  Scabbard is in good condition with some minor paint loss.**

31.5" spearpoint blade with 23.5" median fuller.  Plated nickel fittings with pearl grip scales.  Blade marked with Alcoso maker's stamp.  Leather scabbard of equal quality with plated fittings en suite.

Considered one of the most prestigious institutions in the Third Reich, the Ausw...rtiges Amt (Foreign Office) was filled with members of Germany's upper classes.  While not all of them wholeheartedly embraced Nazism, the old Prussian attitude of loyalty to the state above all dominated the attitudes of the Foreign Office.  This feeling led to the vast majority of Germany's pre-war diplomats supporting Nazi efforts to violate the 1918 Treaty of Versailles and return Germany to a place of power and prestige on the world stage.

**Very good to fine condition overall.  Some tarnishing and wear to details including Parteiadler.  No major cracks or splits to grip scales.  Some tarnishing to scabbard fittings.  A good example of a sword that is quite rare.**

German Third Reich NSDAP Orstgruppe Zellenleiter Armband German Third Reich NSDAP Orstgruppe Zellenleiter Armband

German Third Reich NSDAP Orstgruppe Zellenleiter Armband

Lot #129 (Sale Order 127 of 262)

21" x 5".  Red wool with gold bullion oak leaves and banding.  Black mobile swastika trimmed in gold bullion with center pip.  Ear of band shows stamped "up" indicator and RZM tag showing number "154428".

This armband, with its blue edge trim would have been worn by a Zellenleiter (Cell/block leader), who was in charge of orstgruppe (local) Nazi Party operations in a "cell" of approximately eight to twelve city blocks.  The exact title and responsibilities would change several times during the Nazi Party's time in power.  Many of those in the Zellenleiter position would be pressed into military leadership positions of the citizen-militias formed during the German's desperate last defense.

**Fine condition.  Wool is of good bright color with no major fraying or wear of stitching.  A stunning example of this rare piece for the advanced researcher or collector.**

WWII Italian 6th Alpini Regiment Officer's Cap WWII Italian 6th Alpini Regiment Officer's Cap

WWII Italian 6th Alpini Regiment Officer's Cap

Lot #223 (Sale Order 219 of 262)

Wool felt construction with grosgrain trim.  Wide band with knotted cord.  Embroidered bullion officer's eagle with regimental numeral.  Captain's rank trim on right side.  Wool lining with leather sweatband and "57" size marking.

During the Second World War, the 6th Alpini Regiment advanced into Southern France.  It was then transferred to the Balkans, where it was badly mauled during the Italian invasion of Greece.    After the German invasion of Yugoslavia, pressure was taken off of the worn Italians and the regiment was sent back to Italy for rest.

In the fall of 1942, the 6th was assigned to the Italian Army in Russia (ARMIR) and supported the German 6th Army's left flank as it advanced into Stalingrad.  During its time on the Eastern Front, the "Tridenta" Division, to which the 6th was assigned, was the only Italian division to escape Soviet encirclement.  Desperate action at the Battle of Nikolayevka (January 26, 1943) allowed the 4,250 survivors (representing less than 30% of the Tridenta's original numbers) to escape to German lines.

**Fine condition overall.  Minor wear present.**

Lot of Three Rare WWII U.S. Canteens Lot of Three Rare WWII U.S. Canteens

Lot of Three Rare WWII U.S. Canteens

Lot #264 (Sale Order 259 of 262)

Lot contains three rare American WWII canteens including one M-1942 porcelain enamel marked with "U.S.S.CO./1942" and two ethocellulose marked with 1943 and 1944 dates.

In 1942, in an effort to preserve valuable stocks of tin and aluminum, the U.S. army experimented with several materials for their standard issue canteens.  Enameled porcelain-coated canteens were only produced for one year, as they were found to chip and crack, making them unsuited for field use.  They were used mostly by the Marines and Navy.

The ethocellulose canteens debuted in 1942 and were in production until 1944.  Mostly issued to Marines in the Pacific Theater, the troops fund that they quickly developed stress cracks from heat, as well as giving the water within an unpleasant plastic taste.

**Good condition overall.  Some wear, light chips, and marks from age and use but no cracks or splits.**
