Noah Michael Lichterman, 91, died of natural causes Monday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Hillside Manor Nursing Home. Born in Chicago on March 11, 1914, he was the last of five children of Lewis and Emma Dolitzky Lichterman, who had emigrated from Russia. On July 4, 1940, he married Estelle Epstein, with whom he had two daughters. Estelle died in September 1960, and in December 1961, he married Edith Baker. After he retired they moved to Missoula in 1975. Edith died in 1995. Noah had worked for many years at Rapaport Bros. Toy Co. in Chicago, where he was production manager and invented several toys. Because of the Great Depression he didn't finish college, but he was an avid reader, had a wide range of interests, and participated actively in a discussion group that met monthly for two decades. In retirement, he started doing artwork, including making molds and casting plaster reproductions of such things as New Guinea and Aztec masks and Egyptian and Norse sculptures, which he exhibited at art fairs in Montana.

Joseph Webster Golinkin Hambletonian Painting Lot #421 (Sale Order 421 of 1083) 25.5" by 31.5" framed. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Joseph Golinkin, illustrator and fine art painter, was noted for a wide range of subjects that included sports genre, and landscape scenes of South Florida and other places, polo contests, and genre views of New York City. Much of his work reflected American life in the 1920s and 1930 and depicted speakeasies, dance halls, jazz bands, and street scenes with ordinary people going about their business. He also received Gold and Bronze Olympic medals for excellence in art relating to sport. He began his career when newspapers were still using artists as illustrators, and by the mid-1920s, his work had been extensively reproduced in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, Fortune, Country Life, and other publications. After World War I, he went to New York and attended the Art Students League, but he deliberately did not study in Europe because he was committed to having a uniquely American style. He was a student and friend of Social Realist painter George Luks and earned distinction early in his art career. However, from 1939, he served in the Navy for twenty years, becoming a Rear Admiral, and this was a disruption to his art career. After that period and with a strong background in marine activities, he devoted himself to paintings of ocean racing, especially the America's cup, and many of these pictures were reproduced in the book, Twelve Meter Challenges for the America's Cup, published in 1977 with Norris Hoyt. Golinkin's work celebrates man, particularly man in action, and his polo works depicting the great history of polo at Meadow Brook in the 1930's offers an excellent extraordinary collection, which includes 35 handcolored lithographs, 29 black and white lighographs and 20 watercolors. The works depict the great players of the 1930's---Guest, Hitchcock, Pedley, Balding, Roark, Guinness, Lacey and fieldside views of the 1930 Westchester Cup, the 1930 International Cup at Meadow Brook and the 1938 US Open Finals.

Elton Bennett Steelhead Weather Washington Print Lot #460 (Sale Order 460 of 1083) Serigraph 25.25" by 30.75" framed. Elton Bennett (1910-1974) was a lifelong native of Grays Harbor. One look at his luminous silkscreen art work is enough to inform the viewer of his deep and enduring love for everything that Grays Harbor has to offer- our grey days, the abundance of rainfall, the brisk scent of salt air, the rivers, beaches, and waterways. My memories of my father always conjure the image of an artist reaching for sketch book and pen, a delighted expression of coming upon yet another scene he needed to record. Weekends were spent as a family exploring places which would later appear in a finished print. The early years were a difficult time, as he struggled to establish himself as an artist. He had no desire to leave home in order to fit in with the Seattle art community. The inspiration for his art was always here, and here he would stay, even if it meant putting his talent to use screening labels for cans of clam chowder. Which he did! There were also bumper stickers for the Westport Salmon Derby, menu covers for Sourdough Lils, motel brochures, and paper placemats.

Powell Swanser Turtle Wood Carving Lifesized Lot #477 (Sale Order 477 of 1083) Title of the work is The Long and Winding Road. 24" tall, 24" long, 15.5" wide including base. Item will be crated and delivered by our carrier or via Fedex Freight. Local pickup is also an option. The carving retailed at over $7500 years ago from the artist. POWELL SWANSER is a self taught artist, originally from a log cabin homestead, 52 miles down into the rough, Missouri River Breaks of Eastern Montana and from a long line of pioneers and trailblazers. He now lives with his wife Tazun in the Rocky Mountains near Missoula, Montana in Big Sky Country. Swanser's paintings, sculptures and hand made blades are owned by the rich and famous. His work is world renowned. Swanser is a relative of the great mountain man, John Colter, hunter, guide and "sign talker" for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. "We must prepare ourselves for great suffering", were the words of the brave Shoshone girl Sacajawea, the only woman of the Expedition. "The Hard Way of the Long Knives to the Salt Water of the Setting Sun"...had begun. Out front on horseback was John Colter with his 54 calibur flintlock and his feared and coveted blades. His smaller knife, the "Wolffang" was strapped down to his snakeboot. His tomahawk was packed on his belt along with his big blade, the "Grizzly Chisel". The Indians called these weapons the "COURAGE BLADES". John Colter's "likeness" was to be enshrined at Mt. Rushmore but no image of him could ever be found. He was replaced by Theodore Roosevelt. Powell Swanser is currently in the process of writing a series of books on Colter, the mountain man who discovered and mapped Wyoming's Sunlight Basin, the Teton Mountains and the geysers of Yellowstone...and helped to lead Lewis and Clark to the Pacific.

Powell Swanser is currently in the process of writing a series of books on Colter, the mountain man who discovered and mapped Wyoming's Sunlight Basin, the Teton Mountains and the geysers of Yellowstone...and helped to lead Lewis and Clark to the Pacific.

Charles Russell Pedigree Shorthorn Bronze Montana Lot #694 (Sale Order 694 of 1083) Rare early bronze. Two piece set. Both numbered and matching. Another example of this bronze is found in the archives of the Montana Historical Society. Made during the artist lifetime this bronze was never reproduced as to our knowledge. 4.5" by 6.5" on board. Born in St. Louis, Charles Russell became a legendary painter and sculptor of frontier activities of the American West. Unlike his well-known counterpart, Frederic Remington, he preferred to paint the Indian and the Cowboys rather than the cavalry men. He was fascinated with western life from an early age when he had heard stories of Indian fighting about his great uncle, Will Bent. Russell's earliest paintings were of war bonneted Indians on horseback. Not interested in school, he left home for Helena, Montana, at the suggestion of his father, who paid his son's way after the youth turned 16. The father thought that rough and tough realities of the West would shake romantic notions of it out of the boy's head. But instead, Russell fell totally in love with the environment. He got a job as a night wrangler, and had the days free for observation and painting. He spent seven years working at cowboy jobs and carried his watercolors in his bedroll and also made clay models of wildlife. He did numerous profiles paintings, and sold his early works among the cowboys for five and ten dollars each. In 1887, he turned down a chance to study in Rome to spend the winter with the Blood Indians in Canada. He became very sensitive to the plight of Indians and respectful of their ways. In 1888, Harper's Weekly published one of his cowboy paintings, and he spent that winter among the Blackfeet Indians of Alberta. He studied their language and ceremonies, and the Chief tried unsuccessfully to get Russell to take an Indian wife. In 1890, a folio of fourteen of his paintings was published, and that same year, he did a mural of ranch life scenes for the iron door of the bank in Lewiston, Montana. But it was not until fall, 1896, that he pursued art as a serious career. That year he married Nancy Cooper, and devoting her life to furthering his career, she persuaded him to set up a studio and do commissions. She became his business manager, and much of his career success is due to her marketing and business skills. In succeeding years, his popularity as an illustrator increased, amazing success considering that he had had only three formal drawing lessons. His paintings of men and wild animals, pitted against tough life in the West, also sold widely to Hollywood celebrities, oil rich collectors, a numerous others who liked reminders of the "wild west." In the early 1900s, Russell and his wife visited Yellowstone National Park, and he later did illustrations reflecting that visit including the book, Fifteen Thousand Miles by Stage by Carrie Strahorn. He regarded the Park as a haven for wild animals, and strongly opposed the idea of anyone killing them for hunting pleasure. Apparently Russell only visited the Park once, in 1902, but in 1915, Nancy Russell came back to the Park by herself and set up an exhibition of her husband's work, which was well received. He traveled frequently throughout the West, and his Arizona painting Navajo Trackers is thought to be his last completed work. He died of heart failure in Great Falls, Montana on October 24, 1926, but during the last seven years of his life, he spent his winters in Pasadena, California.

Egon Schiele Die Jungfrau Watercolor Painting Lot #729 (Sale Order 729 of 1083) After Egon Schiele. Title of the work is Die Jungfrau. 15" by 21" on board. This painting was found in the attic of a Survivor of WW2 in Montana. He brought it back following the war. It appears to have been a copy of the work. Which is why it is being sold as "After", and not in fact by the artist. It is pencil and pen signed as shown. Egon Schiele (1890-1918) Egon Schiele is one of the most significant artists of the Wiener Moderne along with Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka. His exceptional talent was discovered early on. Schiele was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the young age of 16, leaving after only three years to found the Neukunstgruppe in 1909. Influenced by Gustav Klimt, whom he first met in 1907, Schiele soon developed a completely unique style. At the age of 20, he was already a mature artist. After leaving Vienna in 1911, Schiele experienced one of his most productive periods. His lifestyle, however, was seen as scandalous outside the capital. He was even imprisoned due to ‘public immorality’. Upon his return to Vienna in 1917, Schiele’s artistic output reached another point of culmination. Schiele achieved his breakthrough in 1918 with a group exhibition of the Vienna Secession. He subsequently participated in "A Century of Viennese Painting" at the Kunsthaus Zürich as well as in shows in Prague and Dresden. Egon Schiele's works, which are connected like no other artist with his biography, are among the most important of modernity and achieve maximum prices at international auctions.

John Edward Wright Oil on Board Painting Lot #830 (Sale Order 830 of 1083) 10.5" by 12.5" framed. John Wright, the former principal of Newport Art College, knew from the age of five that he wanted to become an artist. A schoolmate showed him how to draw an Arab and, after realizing he too could replicate the image with a few deft lines, he drew it on every available surface. His pleasure knew no bounds and the epiphany remained with him for the rest of his life. He was born in Catford, London, in 1931, one of a fireman's three sons. Sent to Wales as an evacuee in 1940, he took to the people and countryside of Carmarthenshire with such affection that by the time he entered Carmarthen School of Art he considered himself to be Welsh and would be closely associated with the arts scene in Wales as painter, film-maker, animateur and designer. He was fortunate in having been put into the care of a man who owned an antiques business, The Old Curiosity Shop, and whose brother owned a second-hand bookshop. These were perfect places for the young aesthete to spend much of his free time. He was also deeply affected by the scenery of west Wales, with which he became acquainted on Sunday outings, and the coves around Mwnt and the farms of the Cothi valley became his first subjects. While still a student, he saw a film called High Conquest, the story of Edward Whymper and the climbing of the Matterhorn. The sight of the moonlit peak from the main street of Zermatt a few years later left an indelible impression on him. He now set out to climb every ridge of the Matterhorn over 4,000 metres and soon became a seasoned alpinist. Many of his paintings depict mountain scenery, sometimes distorted as if reflected in a mirror but always vibrant and majestic. He became a member of the Alpine Club, often climbing without a guide on mountains where others had lost their lives. At about the same time he discovered a passion for bull-fighting, after reading Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon. He became an aficionado of the bull-ring and on 28 July 1965 saw one of the most memorable corridas of recent times when Antonio Ordonez and Paco Camino, two of Spain's greatest matadors, appeared "in an afternoon of overwhelming triumph". In an essay he contributed to my symposium, Artists in Wales (1971), he wrote: "No European artists have moved me more than Ordonez and Camino. Wright, slim and lithe of body in a matador's mould, was a natty dresser and a man whom many women found attractive. He also had a relationship with alcohol and could be very good company late at night. Another discovery was that he could write, a talent nurtured by Keidrych Rhys, who ran the Druid Press and published the magazine Wales in Carmarthen's Lammas Street, where he was taken on as an assistant. Browsing among the famously untidy shelves, it was here he read Dylan Thomas and RS Thomas for the first time; both poets became inspirations for the mature artist. He also wrote short stories, one of which appeared in the prestigious Faber anthology Welsh Short Stories (1959), edited by George Ewart Evans. But it was as a painter that he concentrated his energies. Even so, he once told me that he thought of himself as a literary painter and wanted his pictures to tell a story first and foremost. In 1953 he exhibited at the first of the Arts Council's open exhibitions in Cardiff and thereafter his pictures could be seen in many of the major galleries of Wales, England and America. He won the Llandaff Festival Prize in 1961. In 1968 he was presented with a Medal by the municipality of Arles for a documentary film and, in the year following, with the Montera d'Or, the highest award at the Montpellier Film Festival. Thus began a love affair with the landscapes and cultures of the Mediterranean. As a member of the '56 Group he was part of a campaign for modernist art against those who were content with more traditional scenes. He was a designer for the publisher Chatto and Windus. Among the public bodies to which he was appointed were the Council for Industrial Design and the Welsh Arts Council. In 1965 he joined the Newport College of Art and Design, where he had a number of distinguished colleagues such as Tom Rathmell, Ernest Zobole, John Selway, Jeffrey Steele and Anthony Stevens. The college also produced budding film-makers and graphic designers, rare birds in the Wales of the Sixties. Op Art, a system of pure abstraction that relied on mathematical progressions and the theories of the psychology of perception, was the order of the day. John Wright, the least autocratic of principals, and one of the youngest, allowed his staff the freedom to develop their own interests. The film department at Newport was the only one of its kind in Wales, but under the direction of Harley Jones – sometime assistant to the documentary-maker John Grierson – it allowed students to express themselves in a modernist idiom. But Wright's career as principal was to be cut short: he resigned from his post in 1986, and "disappeared for many years thereafter. Very

Authentic Sitting Bull Sioux Indian Pipe Bag Lot #1082 (Sale Order 1082 of 1083) This item is being relisted due to a non-paying buyer.
Very nice piece of history. This bag came with the pipe bowl listed in a separate lot. It was owned by Sitting Bull. The bag is in poor condition but could and should be conserved. It is accompanied by an Indian Wars time period Military drawstring bag, in which it was found.
The pipe bowl is inscribed From Chief Joseph Nez Perce to Sitting Bull Sioux From Sitting Bull to Lt Kennedy.
In 1877, Chief Joseph began his trek to Canada seeking asylum with Sitting Bull's band of Sioux. Even though Chief Joseph managed to outmaneuver U.S. troops for months, he eventually surrendered to General Nelson Miles after the Battle of Bear Paw, just 40 miles from the Canadian border. A few Nez Perce, under the leadership of White Bird, did not surrender and made it to Sitting Bull's camp, where a pipe could have been given by the two parties.
The Lieutenant Kennedy identified on the inscription is likely Chase W. Kennedy (1859-1936). Lieutenant Kennedy was a West Point graduate and stationed at Fort Meade and Fort Sully in South Dakota with the 3rd Infantry, between 1888-1891.
