The Texas Centennial half dollar commemorative coin was minted to honor the Centennial of Texas's independence from Mexico. Early in the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, on June 15, 1933, Congress passed an act to authorize the coinage of silver half dollars "in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary in 1936 of the independence of Texas, and of the noble and heroic sacrifices of her pioneers, whose revered memory has been an inspiration to her sons and daughters during the past century." The Texas commemorative series ran from 1934 thru 1938 and 13 different dates and mint mark combinations were issued. For each of the years 1935 thru 1938, coins were struck at all three Mints; Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. But for the 1934 Texas, only Philadelphia Mint coins were issued. The original issue price was $1.00 per coin.The coin was designed by Pompeo Coppini, a Texan. The obverse depicts an Eagle sitting on a branch in front of the Lone Star, the symbol of Texas. The reverse depicts the goddess Victory spreading her wings over the Alamo. It also depicts Sam Houston on her left and Stephen F. Austin on her right. The Six Flags of Texas fly above her head. Under her it reads REMEMBER THE ALAMO. Over Sam Houston, Victory, and Stephen F. Austin it reads THE TEXAS INDEPENDENCE CENTENNIAL.

1937 Roanoke Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades GEM+ Unc. A silver commemorative coin was authorized to mark the 350th anniversary of the establishment of Roanoke Colony. This early attempt to establish a permanent English settlement in America became known as the Lost Colony when all of the inhabitants mysteriously vanished.The obverse of the 1937 Roanoke Half Dollar features a profile portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh, who had been granted the charter for colonization by Queen Elizabeth I.On the reverse is an image of Ellinore Dare and her child Virginia Dare, who was the first child born in America to English parents. To each side are sailing ships and below is a pine branch. The coins were designed by William Marks Simpson, who had also designed the Antietam Half Dollar and the Norfolk Half Dollar with his wife.Under the authorizing legislation, the Roanoke Half Dollars had a minimum mintage of 25,000 pieces and no established maximum. A total of 50,000 pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in two batches. The coins were distributed through the Roanoke Colony Memorial Association of Manteo at an issue price of $1.65. Although sales levels exceeded the number of coins sold for other recent issues, eventually a large portion of the production was returned for melting, resulting in net distribution of 29,030.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

The sharp to full detail to the central high points is of particular note for an 1889-O; here the definition is equally crisp toward the borders. Frosty and brilliant, the surfaces are also exceptionally well preserved with most areas appearing as pristine. Thanks to the release of coins from federal vaults from the late 1930s to the early 1960s, examples are plentiful in an absolute sense. Most are poorly struck with blunt high point definition, however, and many also possess indifferent luster quality or numerous abrasions. This issue is scarce in MS-65 and rare any finer. As one of the finer examples known, here is a significant offering.

The 1936 Battle of Gettysburg Half Dollar was issued to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the pivotal battle of the American Civil War. The issue has become one of the more popular amongst the early commemorative coins.The obverse depicts Union and Confederate soldiers in profile. On the reverse are Union and Confederate shields separated by a fasces, a bundle of sticks bound together around a double sided axe, with sprays of oak and laurel to each side. Designed by Frank Vittor, the design for the coin is sometimes described as metallic in appearance. This effect is created by the outer ring containing inscriptions and the exaggerated basining of the fields.Similar to the Delaware Half Dollar, the Gettysburg Half Dollar is associated with a somewhat confusing array of dates. The coins are issued to celebrate an anniversary which occurs in 1938, however they were issued in 1937, and dated 1936.The maximum authorized mintage for the Battle of Gettysburg Half Dollar was 50,000 pieces to be struck at a single mint. The entire number was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and distributed by the Pennsylvania State Commission at a price of $1.65 per coin. In 1938, an unsold quantity of coins was turned over to the American Legion Department of Pennsylvania, who sold the coins for $2.65 each. Eventually, an unsold quantity of 23,100 pieces was returned to the mint for melting.The coin at hand is tied for the Finest Known and well deserving of its grade. Far and away the finest I have ever seen. Fully struck with rich, multicolored iridescence over each side in a fully original pattern. The centers basically present as brilliant with mint-green shades deepening to pastel-blue, then antique-gold and red-russet at the borders. A technically unimpeachable and visually stunning Superb Gem.

Depicted on the face is a profile portrait of Alexander Hamilton, differently styled from that on the $2 Legal Tender Note, Series of 1862. On the right side is the standing goddess Liberty, holding a shield aloft with her left arm, with a walking stick in her right, and wearing a helmet topped with an eagle. The allegory was taken from a drawing by John W. Casilear, who studied art under Asher B. Durand and Peter Maverick, and who in the 1850s was a partner in the bank-note engraving and printing firm of Tappan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. His nephew George W. Casilear joined the National Currency Bureau in 1862 and later held the post of chief engraver of the BEP. During this era there were many different representations of a goddess representing America, sometimes called Liberty (often with a liberty pole), sometimes called Columbia, or America, or another designation.

They came to be nicknamed greenbacks for the color of the back. These notes were printed on paper that was very fragile so it's common to find them in horribly compromised condition. Finding a Nicer One Like this is a rarity. Head of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln,1861-1864, and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court 1864-1873. He is probably best known to numismatists for his causing the motto "In God We Trust" to be adopted for our national coinage.

Extremely Rare in Mint State - One of the most important varieties in the trade dollar series of 1873-1883, the 1876-CC Doubled Die Reverse exhibits particularly wide doubling to the eagle's right (facing) wing tip and the olive branch. Less pronounced doubling is also noted for the eagle's beak, as well as letters in the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Examples are scarce and eagerly sought in all grades, and they are particularly rare at and above AU-50.There are probably fewer than 10-15 Mint State examples of this variety in numismatic circles, one of which is this radiant, captivating and low population BU in SEGS MS-62. The eye appeal is actually superior for the assigned grade, the surfaces fairly smooth overall and free of all individually distracting abrasions. Razor sharp striking detail allows ready appreciation of all elements of the design, including the all important reverse doubling. Fully brilliant with semi reflective surfaces, sure to fetch strong bids from specialized collectorsThe fifth edition of the Cherrypickers' Guide notes: "Considered by most to be the strongest reverse doubled die in the series, this variety is one of the highlights of the trade dollar varieties and is thought to be extremely rare in grades above AU." The coins may range from circulated to uncirculated. Any condition is possible. We have weighed the roll and can assure you that it is 20 Silver Dollars, that all 20 are Morgan/PEace Dollars and that it is not an uncirculated roll as the weight comes in slightly under the 534.60 grams that a fully uncirculated roll would weigh. A commemorative coin issue was approved to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the colony of Connecticut. The design for the 1935 Connecticut Tercentenary Half Dollar would be quite striking art Deco representations of an oak tree and bald eagle.The famous Charter Oak appears on what is usually considered to be the obverse of the coin. This is where the colonists hid their royal charter when King James II sought to confiscate it. The representation of the tree is based on a painting by Charles DeWolf held by the Connecticut Historical Society. The proportions of the leaves are expanded for dramatic effect. The reverse of the coin (which Mint records actually refer to as the obverse) features a bald eagle with particularly stark and minimalistic features. Both sides of the coin were designed by Henry Kreis.The 1935 Connecticut Half Dollar had a relatively modest maximum authorized mintage of 25,000 coins. The net distribution including coins struck for assay was 25,018 after the entire issue sold out. When evaluating this issue, attention should be paid to the broad, flat area of the eagle’s wing, which tends to have hairlines or friction marks.

The five dollar silver certificate has always been one of the most popular denominations to collect. There are several different design types, all of which are quite popular. The 1899 $5 silver certificate is especially popular. The powerful engraving of Running Antelope, Chief of the Oncpapa (Hunkpapa) Lakota Sioux is featured on this large-sized $5 currency note from 1899. This is the first – and only – time a Native American image was used as the central motif on any U.S. paper currency. The central vignette of Running Antelope is highlighted by the bright vibrant blue seal and “V” denoting its denomination. The note caused some ill will among the tribes of the Great Plains when it was issued as it depicted Running Antelope as a chief wearing a Pawnee headdress as the original Lakota headdress was too tall for the engraving. Apparently the engravers at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing weren’t aware that the Lakota and Pawnee were mortal enemies on the Great Plains! Known as Ta-to-ka-in-yan-ka in Lakota, Running Antelope was a close advisor to the great Sitting Bull. As one of four principal “shirt wearers” or chiefs during the Plains Indians Wars, he eventually had a falling out with Sitting Bull because Running Antelope believed that compromise was in his people’s best interests. Certainly one of the most popular currency notes of all time, this note blends United States history and beautiful artwork to form a uniquely American artifact from the turn of the century. Despite also saying 1914 and 1913, these are referred to by collectors as 1918 federal reserve bank notes. Collectors have given this note the nickname of the “Flying Eagle.” The back of the note shows why the bill received its nickname. Keep in mind that series of 1918 one dollar federal reserve bank notes were issued for 12 different banks. The artwork will all be the same though. George Washington is on the left hand side of the bill. There is a blue seal on the right hand side of the bill and the serial numbers are in blue ink.

The Daniel Boone Half Dollar was minted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous frontiersman, explorer, and folk hero. Originally, the coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint to coincide with the bicentennial year. During the next four years, the coins would continue to be struck, across three different mint facilities.On the obverse of the coin is a portrait of Daniel Boone. Since no known portraits of him exist, this is an artists conception created by Augustus Lukeman. The likeness looks decidedly different than the portrait of Boone, which had appeared on the previous 1921 Missouri Centennial Half Dollar. The reverse of the coin features a scene of the frontiersman holding a chart of Kentucky and a musket, facing an American Indian holding a tomahawk. In the background a blockhouse stockade and a sun with rays appear. This was also designed by Augustus Lukeman. Out of the maximum authorized mintage of 600,000 coins, there were only 10,007 of the 1934 Daniel Boone Half Dollars produced and sold at a price of $1.60 each. In the following year, additional coins were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints carrying the 1935 date. Subsequent to the initial distribution, legislation was passed in Congress stipulating that the original design should be supplemented by adding the bicentennial year “1934” to the reverse of the coin. A smaller number of coins were minted with the “small 1934 on reverse” and came to represent a scarce variety.More coins continued to be minted and issued in 1936, 1937, and 1938. The final two years would have smaller net distribution levels as collectors began to grow weary of the endless string of varieties of the commemorative coin, issued years after the actual bicentennial.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Despite having one of the most beautiful design in the series, the Oregon Trail Half Dollar is usually cited as the best example of the abuses which began to take place within commemorative coin programs. Between the years 1926 and 1939, the coins were minted with eight different dates at three different mint facilities for varying prices, in an attempt to make as much money as possible.The obverse of the Oregon Trail Half Dollar was designed by Laura Gardin Fraser. It features a covered wagon drawn by two oxen moving west, towards the setting sun. (Officially, the US Mint states this as the obverse of the coin, although the designers of the coin and many collectors consider this the reverse of the coin.)The other side of the coin was designed by James Earle Fraser. The full figure of a Native American in headdress is shown. He stands before a map of the United States with the Oregon Trail marked, with his left hand outstretched to the east and a bow in his right hand spanning the continent. The maximum authorized mintage for the program was set at a lofty 6 million pieces, which was the largest authorization for commemorative coin thus far. For the first year of issue coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint and offered by the Oregon Trail Memorial Association for $1 each.Since the law authorizing the coins did not include a specific time frame or mint, the Association requested more coins struck in subsequent years and from different mints. Additional coins would be minted in 1928, 1933, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1938, and 1939, variously at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. Individual coin pricing varied from $1.50 to $2.00 to $1.60. The final two years were sold as complete sets from all three mints for $6.25 and later $7.50 each.When Buying an Oregon Trail Commemorative, regardless of year and mint the Points to first show wear are the Indian’s hand and thigh on the obverse and the ox and the bows of the wagon’s cover on the reverse, these are the high points.

The small 12.7 mm diameter of the Type I gold dollar brought about a few complaints of it being easy to lose, like the silver trime. To address this, Longacre enlarged the diameter to 14.3 mm, but he also completely revised the design, replacing it with an Indian design with a crown of feathers resembling his design on the newly introduced three-dollar gold piece. He also moved the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA to the obverse from the reverse. The reverse laurel wreath was replaced with the cereal wreath Longacre employed on the three-dollar denomination and that was later adopted for the Flying Eagle cent. Even with these design changes, challenges faced Mint personnel when striking the coins. Because the weight of the denomination remained unchanged, the coins were made slightly thinner. The obverse Indian head bust of Liberty was in too high a relief for the thinner planchets, and most examples displayed poor definition in and around the centers. To further complicate matters, the dies often clashed early and frequently during press runs, and many survivors exhibit numerous pronounced clash marks. Bowers estimates 90% of all 1854 Type II dollars bear such clash marks on one or both sides. These striking deficiencies prompted the third and final redesign in 1856, enlarging the bust and flattening its relief profile.

Ranked #16 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, the Series 1899 Black Eagle note is from an era when paper money was backed by precious silver, as the issue bears the statement ONE SILVER DOLLAR PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND. It doesn’t take much work to figure out the nickname of the 1899 $1 silver certificate. A quick glance shows three vignettes, an eagle, Ulysses S Grant, and Abraham Lincoln. Somewhere along the way the collecting world decided that this note should be called a “black eagle.” The name has stuck. All series of 1902 five dollar bills have a picture of Ben Harrison on the Left hand side of the bill. 23rd president of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He was a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and a great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison V, a founding father who signed the United States Declaration of Independence Each bill has a large blue number printed on the front of the bill twice. If the back of your blue seal has the years 1902 and 1908 written on it, then you have what is known as a 1902 date back. If your five dollar bill does not have those two dates written on the back of it, then you have what is known as a 1902 plain back.

A commemorative half dollar was issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, during which General McClellan thwarted General Lee’s invasion of Maryland. This followed a separate coin recently issued for the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.The obverse of the Battle of Antietam Half Dollar features the profile portraits of General George B. McClellan and General Robert E. Lee. On the reverse of the coin is an image of the Burnside Bridge, which was an important tactical objective of the battle. The designs for the coin were created by William Marks Simpson, who had also designed the recent commemorative issues for the Norfolk and Roanoke Island. All of these coins include an unusually large number of inscriptions.A maximum of 50,000 pieces were authorized to be produced. The entire number was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and send to the Washington County Historical Society, which offered the 1937 Antietam Half Dollars for $1.65 each. The general market for commemorative coins had declined by this time and sales were slow. Eventually 32,000 pieces were returned to the mint for melting. Of the three Civil War themed early commemoratives (Stone Mountain, Gettysburg, and Antietam), the final issue had the lowest mintage.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

The Daniel Boone Half Dollar was minted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous frontiersman, explorer, and folk hero. Originally, the coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint to coincide with the bicentennial year. During the next four years, the coins would continue to be struck, across three different mint facilities.On the obverse of the coin is a portrait of Daniel Boone. Since no known portraits of him exist, this is an artists conception created by Augustus Lukeman. The likeness looks decidedly different than the portrait of Boone, which had appeared on the previous 1921 Missouri Centennial Half Dollar. The reverse of the coin features a scene of the frontiersman holding a chart of Kentucky and a musket, facing an American Indian holding a tomahawk. In the background a blockhouse stockade and a sun with rays appear. This was also designed by Augustus Lukeman. Out of the maximum authorized mintage of 600,000 coins, there were only 10,007 of the 1934 Daniel Boone Half Dollars produced and sold at a price of $1.60 each. In the following year, additional coins were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints carrying the 1935 date. Subsequent to the initial distribution, legislation was passed in Congress stipulating that the original design should be supplemented by adding the bicentennial year “1934” to the reverse of the coin. A smaller number of coins were minted with the “small 1934 on reverse” and came to represent a scarce variety.More coins continued to be minted and issued in 1936, 1937, and 1938. The final two years would have smaller net distribution levels as collectors began to grow weary of the endless string of varieties of the commemorative coin, issued years after the actual bicentennial.
1899 "Black Eagle" Large Size $1 Silver Certificate FR-234 Grades f+. Ranked #16 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, the Series 1899 Black Eagle note is from an era when paper money was backed by precious silver, as the issue bears the statement ONE SILVER DOLLAR PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND. It doesn’t take much work to figure out the nickname of the 1899 $1 silver certificate. A quick glance shows three vignettes, an eagle, Ulysses S Grant, and Abraham Lincoln. Somewhere along the way the collecting world decided that this note should be called a “black eagle.” The name has stuck. Whether you have been collected for a week or your entire life, you certainly know what a black eagle is. Grant and Lincoln often get overlooked. All Series of 1886 Silver Certificates are highly desired for their beautifully ornate designs. This 1886 Series included the country's first two dollar denomination for the type.. A large portrait vignette of General Winfield Scott Hancock is seen at the left, Winfield Scott Hancock (February 14, 1824 – February 9, 1886) was a United States Army officer and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. He served with distinction in the Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican–American War and as a Union general in the American Civil War. Known to his Army colleagues as "Hancock the Superb," he was noted in particular for his personal leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. His military service continued after the Civil War, as Hancock participated in the military Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontierSilver Certificates were first issued in 1886 under the title of Silver Certificates of Deposit, such notes being authorized under the Bland-Allison Act of February 28 of that year, best remembered for launching the production of hundreds of millions of Morgan silver dollars. The idea was to have each Silver Certificate backed by an equivalent number of silver dollars held in Treasury vaults.Silver Certificates proved to be an enduring series and continued well into the 20th century in the form of small size notes. The designs differed from those used on Legal Tender and other currency and were often notable and attractive from a numismatic viewpoint. The 1886 Series notes were the first issued in fairly large quantities.

1917 $1 Legal Tender Note "Sawhorse" F36 Grades vf+. This 1917 $1 note is the last large-sized legal tender bank note ever issued. It's referred to as a "Horseblanket Note," due to their large size. The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art.

Continuing the outpouring of commemorative coins issued during the year was the 1936 Wisconsin Territorial Centennial Half Dollar. As the name suggests, this issue does not mark the 100th anniversary of statehood, which would occur six years later, but rather the start of the territorial government.The designs, which have been criticized by some collectors, are the result of the strict instructions from the Coinage Committee of the Wisconsin Centennial Celebration and the work of two artists. A local university art student David Parsons prepared initial designs based on the requirements to feature the territorial seal on one side of the coin and a badger on the other. The models prepared by Parsons were rejected by the Mint, so modifications were performed by New York artist Benjamin Hawkins to make the designs suitable for production. The final designs bore little resemblance to the initial rejected models, except for the identical themes presented.On the obverse is an image of a badger standing on a log with three arrows and an olive branch positioned vertically behind. The reverse features an arm holding a pickax and a small mount of rocks, an image adapted from the Wisconsin Territorial Seal. The authorizing legislation for the 1936 Wisconsin Half Dollars specified a minimum mintage of 25,000 pieces, with no specified maximum. The minimum quantity was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and offered for sale for an initial price of $1.50 per coin plus postage.

Only a few light hairlines on the reverse fields prevent an even higher-grade determination. But this wonderful coins Trump card is its spectacular mirrored fields!

In 1896, the U.S. Treasury printed Silver Certificates with beautiful designs depicting educational motifs. Known as the “Educational Series,” each of these notes is a numismatic masterpiece. They’re also incredibly difficult to come by. We’ve managed to Bring to auction a $2 note depicting an allegorical figure of Science presenting Steam and Electricity to Commerce and Manufacture, paired with a reverse featuring Samuel Morse (inventor of the Morse code and telegraph) and steamship pioneer Robert Fulton! Due to their theme, these notes became known as “Two Dollar Eds,” although in some circles they are known as “Fulton” or “Morse” notes in reference to the portraits of the two famous Americans on the back of the bill. Still, it’s the beautifully and intricately-engraved images on the front of the bill that are truly inspiring – making it arguably the most classically beautiful two-dollar bill ever printed! In the center is the allegorical figure of Science presenting two children, Steam and Electricity, to the more mature figures of Commerce on the left and Manufacture on the right. Issued just before the Turn of the Century, the novelty of Steam and Electricity was still new and their portrayals as youths, while Science, Industry, and Commerce are all mature women effectively illustrates where America was at that time regarding these new forms of power. In the book 100 Greatest Currency Notes by Q. David Bowers, the $2 Educational Note is ranked #11.

Heavy clash marks are observed on both sides, though the design elements are boldly impressed. Tinges of light toning surround the peripheries, with mainly untoned silvery surfaces over the central regions. The luster is vibrant and undeniably original, with remarkably few abrasions. A highly appealing Choice example of this slightly better date. A small die lump in the N in UNITED aids in identifying the variety.

***Auction Highlight*** 1925 Fort Vancouver Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Graded ms67 by SEGS. One of the four different commemorative coins issued during the year was the 1925 Fort Vancouver Centennial Half Dollar. This coin featured designs by Portland, Oregon artist Sidney Bell, which were modeled by Laura Gardin Fraser.The occasion commemorated was the 100th anniversary of the founding Fort Vancouver, Washington. This outpost had served as a trading center for settlers and Native Americans within the territory. The coins were issued as part of a week long local celebration and sold for $1 each.Dr. John McLoughlin is depicted on the obverse of the coin. He had established Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River in 1825 and later went on to found Oregon City. The reverse of the Fort Vancouver Half Dollar portrays a pioneer holding a musket with the Fort and a mountain peak in the background. Authorized production was set at 300,000, which proved far too optimistic. A quantity of 50,000 coins was struck at the San Francisco Mint (although the coins did not carry the “S” mint mark) and after unsold coins were returned for melting, net distribution was a paltry 14,994 coins.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Although the Top 100 book claims they are both equally available and valuable, time has proven the 117 to be much more elusive and worth an even bigger premium. If you are buying a 117, check it closely as some coins slabbed 117 actually have a broken O that can only be seen by close inspection and tilting the coin under good light. VAM-117 also is polished away on the eagle’s right side.” Also the Key identifier for the Vam 117, is an “Alligator Eye”

1864 $2 Confederate States Of America, T-70 Grades vf, very fine. This $2 paper note not only marks the last of its denomination it also was from the 7th and final series of currency issued by the Confederacy. The note features a portrait of Confederate Secretary of the State Judah Benjamin, one of the most capable members of President Jefferson Davis’ cabinet. During the Civil War, Benjamin also served as the South’s attorney general and secretary of war. When the Confederates lost a battle, he refused to reveal that they didn’t have any available reinforcements, instead accepting a congressional censure. After the war, he spent days burning personal correspondence and government documents before escaping to England, where he became a successful attorney.

1935-s San Diego Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades GEM+ Unc. The issue commonly referred to as the San Diego Half Dollar was authorized to mark the California-Pacific International Exposition. The commemorative coins were first issued in 1935 struck at the San Francisco Mint, and later in 1936 struck at the Denver Mint.The obverse design was based on elements of the California State Seal. Minerva is seated with a spear and shield bearing the word “Eureka”, a grizzly bear is to her left, a horn of plenty is to the right, and a ship and miner at work appear in the background. The reverse image includes two of the exposition buildings, the observation tower and the Sate of California building. The designer of the coin was Robert Aitken, best known for his design of the 1915-S Panama Pacific $50 Gold Piece.The full maximum authorized mintage of 250,000 pieces was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1935 and sales began at the price of $1 each. After slow initial sales, the exposition sought and received Congressional approval to send back 180,000 of the unsold coins to be melted and reminted with the 1936 date. The 1936-dated coins would be struck at the Denver Mint and offered for sale at $1.50 each. Meanwhile, a remaining quantity of the 1935-dated coins were offered at $3 each. Later, the cost of the 1936 coins were also raised to $3 each.Despite these efforts, sales progressed even more slowly. Eventually, 150,000 of the 1936 coins were sent back to the Mint for melting. After the entire convoluted process, total sales were 100,224 out of the 250,000 maximum authorized mintage.

Somewhat similar to the language seen on National Bank Notes, the notes themselves were actually backed by bonds deposited with the United States Treasury by the individual Federal Reserve bank. Forever confusing new collectors, the top of these notes read “NATIONAL CURRENCY” but they are not what is referred to as National Bank Notes. Starting off with the main attraction to these interesting banknotes is the design on the back, with its imposing visage of the 27,000-ton USS New York dreadnought battleship. The vignette was never labeled on the note itself and was intended to be generic, but in comparing it to an image of New York it is clear the two are the same. The face of the note has a vignette of third United States President Thomas Jefferson; his first appearance on the Federal $2 bill was on the Series of 1869 Legal Tender, and he can be found there on modern $2 notes to this day.

He was a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and a great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison V, a founding father who signed the United States Declaration of Independence Each bill has a large blue number printed on the front of the bill twice. If the back of your blue seal has the years 1902 and 1908 written on it, then you have what is known as a 1902 date back. If your five dollar bill does not have those two dates written on the back of it, then you have what is known as a 1902 plain back.

The Long Island Tercentenary half dollar was a commemorative half dollar struck by the United States Bureau of the Mint in 1936 at the height of the 1930s commemorative craze. There were 100,053 pieces minted.. The obverse depicts a male Dutch settler and an Algonquian tribesman, and the reverse shows a Dutch sailing ship. It was designed by Howard Weinman, the son of Mercury dime designer Adolph A. Weinman.The Long Island Tercentenary Committee wanted a coin to mark the 300th anniversary of the first European settlement there, at modern Flatlands, Brooklyn, New York City. The authorizing bill passed through Congress without opposition. Still, it was amended in the Senate to add protections against past commemorative coin abuses, such as low mintages or an assortment of varieties. On April 13, 1936, the bill became law with the signature of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Most Long Islands are mint state, with the average grade being MS63 to MS65. Superb Gem MS66 examples are fairly difficult to obtain. But MS67 examples are definitely rare. This is probably due to the fact that both the obverse and reverse designs are somewhat flat and marks and abrasions are fairly common. Most Long Islands have frosty luster

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

1936-d San Diego Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades GEM Unc. The issue commonly referred to as the San Diego Half Dollar was authorized to mark the California-Pacific International Exposition. The commemorative coins were first issued in 1935 struck at the San Francisco Mint, and later in 1936 struck at the Denver Mint.The obverse design was based on elements of the California State Seal. Minerva is seated with a spear and shield bearing the word “Eureka”, a grizzly bear is to her left, a horn of plenty is to the right, and a ship and miner at work appear in the background. The reverse image includes two of the exposition buildings, the observation tower and the Sate of California building. The designer of the coin was Robert Aitken, best known for his design of the 1915-S Panama Pacific $50 Gold Piece.The full maximum authorized mintage of 250,000 pieces was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1935 and sales began at the price of $1 each. After slow initial sales, the exposition sought and received Congressional approval to send back 180,000 of the unsold coins to be melted and reminted with the 1936 date. The 1936-dated coins would be struck at the Denver Mint and offered for sale at $1.50 each. Meanwhile, a remaining quantity of the 1935-dated coins were offered at $3 each. Later, the cost of the 1936 coins were also raised to $3 each.Despite these efforts, sales progressed even more slowly. Eventually, 150,000 of the 1936 coins were sent back to the Mint for melting. After the entire convoluted process, total sales were 100,224 out of the 250,000 maximum authorized mintage.

1864 $50 Confederate States of America Richmond CSA Bank Note T-66 Grades vf+. After the Civil War broke out in 1861, the newly established Confederate government began to issue it's own money as legal tender to the citizens of the South. The gamble was that if the South won the war, the money would be redeemable. The 1st note from the Government of the Confederate States of America was issued in April of 1861. From then on, notes were issued on through 1864. Almost every Confederate note was painstakingly hand signed and numbered. It is not uncommon for these notes to have uneven, or rough borders since scissors or shears were used to hastily cut the sheets of notes apart.

The Daniel Boone Half Dollar was minted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous frontiersman, explorer, and folk hero. Originally, the coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint to coincide with the bicentennial year. During the next four years, the coins would continue to be struck, across three different mint facilities.On the obverse of the coin is a portrait of Daniel Boone. Since no known portraits of him exist, this is an artists conception created by Augustus Lukeman. The likeness looks decidedly different than the portrait of Boone, which had appeared on the previous 1921 Missouri Centennial Half Dollar. The reverse of the coin features a scene of the frontiersman holding a chart of Kentucky and a musket, facing an American Indian holding a tomahawk. In the background a blockhouse stockade and a sun with rays appear. This was also designed by Augustus Lukeman. Out of the maximum authorized mintage of 600,000 coins, there were only 10,007 of the 1934 Daniel Boone Half Dollars produced and sold at a price of $1.60 each. In the following year, additional coins were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints carrying the 1935 date. Subsequent to the initial distribution, legislation was passed in Congress stipulating that the original design should be supplemented by adding the bicentennial year “1934” to the reverse of the coin. A smaller number of coins were minted with the “small 1934 on reverse” and came to represent a scarce variety.More coins continued to be minted and issued in 1936, 1937, and 1938. The final two years would have smaller net distribution levels as collectors began to grow weary of the endless string of varieties of the commemorative coin, issued years after the actual bicentennial.

Late dies with multiple sets of bold clash marks, and peripheral elements drawn toward the rims. Virtually Full Mint Luster remains and only lightly abraded. 1936 Norfolk Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades Select Unc. The Norfolk Half Dollar Honors the Bicentennial of Norfolk, Virginia's elevation to the status of Borough in 1736. This Commemorative marked an event of purely local interest, and realized poor sales at the time of issue. In the irony that often accompanies such initial failure, it is now among the Scarcer and More Costly Coins in the old commemorative series. This bill authorized the coining of not more than 25,000 half dollars, to be coined at a single mint and with a single design. The entire mintage of 25,013 Norfolk halves was coined in September at the Philadelphia Mint (the odd 13 pieces were reserved for assay and later destroyed). Points to check for wear include the lower left of each sail and the highpoints of the mace.

The 1925 California Diamond Jubilee Half Dollar is one of the collector favorites amongst early commemorative coins. The issue was authorized to mark the 75th anniversary of California’s statehood and featured imagery recalling the famous gold rush.The obverse the coin features a kneeling figure of a “forty-niner” as he pans for gold. The reverse features an image of a grizzly bear, which comes from the state emblem of California. Both the obverse and reverse of the California Half Dollar were designed by sculptor Joseph Mora.Authorization was provided to strike up to 300,000 coins. Production took place at the San Francisco Mint, where 150,000 coins were produced. Distribution was handled by the San Francisco Citizens’ Committee with an issuance price of $1 per coin, which had become standard for commemorative half dollar issues. Coins which remained unsold were returned to the mint for melting, resulting in a net distribution of 86,594.The High Points of the Coin are the Bear's Shoulder and Leg and the Miner's Back, Shoulder and Shirtsleeve.

Ranked #16 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, the Series 1899 Black Eagle note is from an era when paper money was backed by precious silver, as the issue bears the statement ONE SILVER DOLLAR PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND. Clean Surfaces for the Grade, A Major Rarity This Fine. The 1901 Morgan dollar is an elite condition rarity. Despite a mintage in excess of 6.9 million coins, the date is scarce in Mint State, rapidly decreasing in availability at each ascending grade level. It is believed that most of the coins not released into circulation at the time of issue were destroyed after 1918 under the terms of the Pittman Act. For most collectors, the finest 1901 Morgan dollars collectible are in MS64. The last two PCGS-graded pieces that were auctioned in this grade realized $52,800 and $55,200, respectively. Gems are almost unheard of today, even though a handful are reported by the grading services. The last to sell at auction was an NGC coin in Bowers and Merena's November 2009 Baltimore auction, which realized more than $155,000. Clearly, the rarity of the 1901 Morgan dollar in high grade is not at all overstated. This near-Gem is blast white with superb satin luster. The strike is a trifle soft on the eagle's breast feathers but is bold elsewhere. To the unaided eye, the coin appears a grade point finer, but a loupe reveals a few faint marks that affirm the MS64 designation. Additionally this incredible coin is not only a conditional rarity but it is both the Vam 15, a R-5 variety, and a mint error, in that it is struck slightly off center on the obverse. WOW. We look forward to this coin's sale with great anticipation.

Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collection of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.

Commemorative coins were authorized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the admission of Arkansas into the Union. The Arkansas Centennial Half Dollars ended up being issued during five separate years, across three different mints. The coins became controversial due to the stream of variations created specifically to market to collectors, as well as the escalating issue prices as mintage for later issues became smaller.The obverse design features the head of Liberty and a Native American in headdress. Although this is now considered to be the obverse of the coin, there was initially some confusion and US Mint records and some references refer to this side as the reverse. In 1936, a new design was issued for this side of the coin, featuring a Senator who was living at the time of issue. The 1936 Robinson-Arkansas Half Dollar is considered a separate issue by most collectors.The reverse of the coin features the image of an eagle with wings spread, perched on the rising sun with rays emanating upwards. In the background a geometrical shape appears with the word “Arkansas” at center, amidst an arrangement of stars. Both the obverse and reverse design designed by Edward Everett Burr, following models prepared by Emily Bates.At the onset, the Arkansas Half Dollar was struck in a modest quantity of 13,012 pieces at the Philadelphia Mint with an additional 5,505 from Denver and 5,506 from San Francisco. The Philadelphia issues were sold at an issue price of $1 each, while the mint marked coins were purchased in a bulk transaction by a coin dealer and subsequently sold for $2.75 each. This initial situation was a taste of things to come.In the following year, coins from three different mints were initially offered for $1 each, but the price was quickly raised to $1.50 per coin, and eventually sold as sets of three coins for $6.75. The following year three coin sets were sold at $8.75, which was eventually raised to $10. This would also be the price of the 1939 sets.

Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 681 Rare $20 Grades Select AU. Series 681 military payment certificates are a favorite of the men and women who actually served in Vietnam. Many of those same people are now big collectors today. They are popular because the artwork on these MPCs actually has something to do with the military, unlike previous issues which were all just generic vignettes. I am sure the Bureau of Engraving and Printing considered these a success. Series 681 MPCs were only used in Vietnam between August 11, 1969 and October 7th, 1970.

The 1936 Norfolk Bicentennial Half Dollar was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Norfolk, Virginia as a borough. Both the obverse and reverse of the coins carry incredibly voluminous number of inscriptions, which dominate the design.At the center of the obverse is a reproduction of the Norfolk City Seal, which carries a ship plow and stocks of grain. Inscriptions are placed in three concentric circles surrounding this image. The inscriptions read “Borough of Norfolk Bicentennial”, “1936”, “City of Norfolk Virginia”, “Town 1682”, “Borough 1736”, “City 1845”, “Et Terra Et Mare Divitiae Tuae” (Both by Land and by Sea Thy Riches Are), and “Crescas” (Thou Shalt Grow).The reverse carries an image of the Royal Mace of Norfolk, which was presented by Lieutenant Governor Dinwiddie in 1753. The date “1636” appears at center with two floral sprays. As with the obverse, many inscriptions surround, reading “United States of America”, “Half Dollar”, “Norfolk Virginia Land Grant”, “In God We Trust”, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “Liberty”. Designs for the coin were prepared by William Marks Simpson and Marjorie Emory Simpson.This Commemorative marked an event of purely local interest, and realized poor sales at the time of issue. In the irony that often accompanies such initial failure, it is now among the Scarcer and More Costly Coins in the old commemorative series. This bill authorized the coining of not more than 25,000 half dollars, to be coined at a single mint and with a single design.
