The spring lever and spring plate are not present. The spike has the Eagle 5 acceptance stamp. The Paul Weyersberg marked carbon steel blade does not have the "Rostfrei" marking. The blade exhibits age graying and darker spotting which is also indicative of carbon steel. This is an extremely rare blade to find on these gravity knives! According to Jan-Peter Bruning, the author of the holy grail reference book on Luftwaffe Gravity Knives, there are only a few known examples. The following is a partial quote from an interview with Mr. Bruning "I have just recently decided for myself though that some of the rarest WW2 specimens belong to the group of non-takedown knives produced in 1942 consisting of a mix of stainless and carbon steel parts. Apparently stainless steel started to become scarce and thus the Armament Office of the Luftwaffe changed the specification from all stainless steel to carbon steel. I know only 2 SMF and 2 WEYERSBERG knives out of this group which included a carbon steel blade which is devoid of the “ROSTFREI (rust-free)” writing. These are super rare....(End Quote)" I suppose this particular gravity knife would make it 3 know examples!

The lower band of the Goblet is hand engraved and named to "FELDWEBEL KURT FRIEDMANN" and was awarded "11.2.43" Feldwebel Kurt Friedmann was an NCO Pilot assigned to the 5th (Long Range) Reconnaissance Squadron/122nd Reconnaissance Group. He was awarded the German Cross In Gold on August 31, 1943. Feldwebel Friedmann's other awards are the Iron Cross 1st Class, Iron Cross 2nd Class, Eastern Front Service Medal, Black Wound Badge, Luftwaffe Pilot's Qualification Badge, Reconnaissance Clasp In Bronze. Recipients' named were published in the periodical Ehrenliste der Deutschen Luftwaffe (Honor List of the German Air Force). German archives indicate that approximately 58,000 were given "on paper", but only 13–15,000 goblets were actually awarded according to the records." It was also given to those that didn't quite qualify DKIG award, but as noted above, Friedmann was eventually awarded the German Cross In Gold 7 months later!
