14" by 18" unframed, 19" by 23" framed. Jay Contway is a native Montanan, who has spent a life-time creating western sculpture which captures the life he knows. Jay spent time on the rodeo circuit, and his knowledge and respect for the working cowboy shows clearly in his art. Appreciation for the history, his own native ancestry and the people and animals of the West is clearly illustrated in his sculpture. Jay's preoccupation with his art includes a foundry which enables him to oversee all the details of each bronze he creates. The foundry, located just a few yards from his studio, is the site of all castings of any Jay Contway sculpture. No original models are sold and all are cast in only bronze or silver. All bronzes are limited in the number cast. Jay's work is seldom found in galleries. He prefers to market his own work through art shows in the western United States and Canada. He was commissioned by the Latigo Corporation to do the only authorized bronze commemorating the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive.

13" by 15" framed. Kenneth Yarus was brought up in Kalispell Montana, where he first dreamed of being a painter. He found mentors in the local art world. Steve and Nancy Cawdrey encouraged his growth as well as Greg Call, Susan Guthrie and Rusti Warner. He pursued his passion through high school and earned several awards including a Gold Key from the Scholastic Art Awards, 2nd place in the Montana "Paint the State" anti meth contest, and The John and Anne Taylor Scholarship. With this scholarship Ken was able to continue his studies at the Ashland Academy of Art. He learned the fundamentals of drawing under Russian Master Semyon Bilmes. The school moved to Maui and Ken moved to New York City's Grand Central Academy. He studied under modern masters Jacob Collins, Edward Minoff, Josh LaRock, and Scott Waddell. Ken then returned to the West Coast to continue his learning by taking workshops and painting "plein air" in the land he loves. "My personal love for nature and adventure inspire my art. I strive to communicate an emotional value about my subjects by exploring the nuances of colors and textures that make them unique. Balancing the realistic representation and the deeper emotional value is a constant struggle that will always motivate my work."

Title is "Piegan Brave". 6.5" tall. Charles M. Russell, the nostalgic, held tight memories of a youthful past when the West belonged to God. There was a sense of loss, as poignant as losing a loved one. The specter of what this loss meant loomed over Russell the rest of his life. He was the quintessential nostalgic who grabbed history and married it to idealized memory and imagination. For example, despite Russell never witnessing a buffalo hunt, it became the basis for his most popular and desired art. Nancy Russell explained, "No man can be a painter without imagination." The Romantic art of the nineteenth century was the cornerstone to build the West reimagined for not only Russell, but also his contemporaries and future artists. No Western American artist fought back harder against racism, sexism, and championed environmentalism more than did Charles M. Russell. He thrived on imagining a time when the land was pristine, women were held in high regard, and people of color were the heroes. Paradoxically, the industrialized world championed just the opposite. To many, his life appeared odd—that cowboy hat, that sash, that unruly hair, that folksy talk. He and his art embraced an identity of an exile from a different place and time, which is even more appealing today. In that way, Russell was a visionary who instilled hope in all who saw his art, and his heart. For those reasons and much more, he is the most beloved of all the Western American artists. The Charles M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana; the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West at the University of Oklahoma in Norman; the Charles M. Russell Center Series on Art and Photography of the American West (books published by the University of Oklahoma University Press); the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge in Montana; the Russell Riders; and the Russell Skull Society are a testament to that fact. The Cowboy Artists of America have been called “The Sons of Charlie Russell†by art historian B. Byron Price for good reason. Russell was a legendary painter, sculptor, and author. Ever humble and self-effacing, as his fame skyrocketed, he never forgot his cowboy friends. The importance of his life and works is that no one has inspired more new generations of artists. Russell lived in the past and his wife Nancy who was his business manager lived for the future. How could a self-trained artist living in remote Montana become the highest paid artist in America? It’s quite a story. Charles Marion Russell was born on March 19, 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, a bustling gateway to the West of some 200,000 people. Family history and adventure stories such as the Leatherstocking Tales by James Fenimore Cooper lured Russell to the West. On a crisp March day in 1880 Charles M. Russell jumped off the stagecoach in Helena, Montana Territory and took his turn as the latest easterner seeking western adventure. Accompanying him was Willis L.W. “Pike†Miller, a family acquaintance who acted as Russell’s guardian and gave him his first job in Montana on a sheep ranch Miller owned in the Judith Basin. While Miller was kind enough to chaperone Russell, they soon parted ways because Russell wanted nothing to do with sheepherding. For twelve years Russell and his horse Monte were together on the open range mainly nighthawking—somewhat of a lowly cowboy job of watching the horses overnight while the rest of the cowboys slept—until 1893 when Russell began transitioning from cowboy artist to full-time artist. Only a teenager, Russell was younger than most cowboys who were usually in their early twenties but shared with them the qualities of being gregarious, humble, energetic and adventuresome. Charlie saw the cowboy as the last frontiersman—unlike the colorless overburdened farmer and sheep herder. The period from 1906 to 1910 was one of the most productive and enjoyable times of Charlie’s life, which in no small part was due to the summers at Bull Head Lodge and the mentoring by others such as Philip R. Goodwin who visited him there in 1907 and 1910. Glacier National Park has the type of views that keep postcard publishers in business. The mountains fanned the flames of Charlie Russell’s creative genius. He understood that the mountains don’t need us, we need the mountains. Charlie’s favorite place in the world was the lodge, a log structure nestled among the cedar, fir, and tamarack along the shoreline of beautiful Lake McDonald. The years from 1911 to 1915 were a time of artistic achievement by Russell and promotion by Nancy who was as skilled as any field general with her well planned exhibitions in America, Canada, and England. It would be a grueling pace for the duo, but one that would yield a bountiful harvest of financial and critical success. Robert "Bob" Macfie Scriver (1914–1999) was a Montana sculptor who was born on the Blackfeet reservation of Anglophone Quebec parents. Scriver was a scholar of Blackfoot Indian culture and history who knew and associated with Blackfoot historian James Willard Schultz in the earlier part of his life. He specialized in western subjects, but it is more accurate to associate him with the American Beaux Arts-educated sculptors who became prominent at the turn of the 19th century. His first efforts were small inexpensive souvenir wildlife figurines cast in plaster and air-brushed in natural colors. A parallel career in taxidermy and a fondness for hunting supported the increasingly accurate portrayals of these animals.

22.5" by 28.5" framed. John Pace (c. 1930--July 22, 2006) My Grandfather John Pace was a distinguished, passionate man with a variety of skills. My dad and Uncle Nick are both great artists, but Grandfather ran the show. My Grandfather was incredibley charismatic and smart. The Grand-father, as we call him, dabled in many things throughout his life. He served in the war, drove racecars, had a knack for gambling, poker and black jack, and painted occasionally. His first wife was Native American, my dad's mom. She passed when my dad was only 14. When my dad met my mom he was excited to learn she too was California Indian (Pitt-River Tribe). So, he introduced her to John right away. She later admitted that she was more taken with John than my dad! She says he was not only handsome but full of character. When he passed he said, "Ah, yes. I think I'll die now." That's how he was. He was ready for anything. His life was full and he was truly anticipating the next phase in his journey. The last time I talked to him, he sounded just like that. Very put together, never sweating the small stuff. He sounded at least 20 years younger than he actually was. As far as his work, it lives on through us. On our walls and above our fireplaces. His spirit travels still in those paintings. Submitted as a bulletin by Christal Pace. Howard W Gorman Navajo Indian Conte Crayon Drawing

12.25" by 15.75". A member of the Navajo nation, Howard Gorman was one of three brothers: Ed, Carl and Howard, and well-known Navajo artist, R.C. Gorman was the son of Carl. Howard Gorman was primarily a writer, but also did the occasional painting. Three of his paintings, signed "H. Gorman" are in the collection of the Hubbell Trading Post at Ganado. One of the paintings is dated 1928 and another appears to be 1931. They are landscape scenes with Indians and horses. One of the writings of Howard Gorman is a story, The Long Walk of the Navajos, about the trip to Fort Sumner and reservation existence, imposed by the 'white men' in 1964. 25.5" by 29.5" framed. Lieutenant Kangiyatapiki Blackfoot Chief Standing Rock Reservation. Hermon Adams was born on September 14, 1945, in Raymond Mississippi. He began painting at a very early age, selling his first painting by the age of fifteen. Hermon's artwork, especially the horses, reflect the influences growing up with and training horses, working on his family's cattle farm and on ranches close by, and in Texas. Hermon received an Associates Degree from Hinds Community College, and Bachelor of Fine arts in Advertising Design from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1968. Hermon married Sheila Hembree, and with an interruption of two years serving in the Army, he worked for several years in commercial art, before beginning painting full time in 1977. In 1981, Hermon Adams followed his heart west, settling with his wife, Sheila and their two sons, Jim and Rob in Arizona in 1983. The Artist began his own publishing company in 1988, and also has done commission work for The Franklin Mint, Landmark Calendars, Leisure Books, Leanin' Tree Greeting Cards, Milton Bradley puzzles, Bradford Exchange plates, Mountain Tee Shirts, and Tree Free Greeting Cards. Western subjects, landscapes, Native Americans, cowboys, horses, wildlife and fantasy are Hermon Adams's primary subject matter. The artist says, with regard to his distinctive style, "An artist's style, if it's honest, is everything he has experienced, seen, loved and even hated. But when he begins to paint, he should try only to paint the best that he can, not dwelling on how to achieve a particular style. Then, he will have a style that is uniquely his own". Hermon has lectured for various art groups and colleges. His artwork is in the collections of financier Thomas James (Raymond James Financial); Burt Reynolds; Chuck Norris; Hotel Magnate, Richard Kessler; The Roy Rogers family. Hermon's work has been on display at the Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center in Texas, and is in the permanent collection of the Prescott Resort and Conference Center on the Yavapi Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. Original drawing, as published in the Pueblo Children of the Earth Mother. 20.25" by 5.5" framed. Title is Yellow Corn Girl Sister. A painter in realist style of historical and contemporary Southwest Indians, Thomas Mails was born in Groveland, California. He settled at Lake Elsinore, California. After serving in World War II, he studied at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and then was an instructor in architectural design at Heald College in San Francisco. In 1947, he moved to Seattle and worked as an architect until 1955, when he entered a Lutheran Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota and was ordained in 1958. He served as a pastor and in 1962, began his documentation of Indians. Of this commitment, he said: "I have a profound regard for the Indian religions. Everything about the native American centers in religion, and all they undertake begins with and is thereafter influenced by this single base or source. My deep interest lies in conveying in words and pictures their ceremonies and the ceremonial costumes. . ..and they are not vanishing. There is a ceremonial renaissance taking place." 26.75" by 32.75" framed. Ila Mae McAfee was born 1897 in the small ranching community of Sargents in southwestern Colorado near Gunnison. She died in 1995 in Pueblo, Colorado, where she moved after leaving her adobe home in Taos, New Mexico in late summer 1993. She was raised on her family's ranch south of Gunnison, and attended Logan County School, riding ten miles each way to school. In 1916, she graduated from Gunnison High School and then spent time in Los Angeles at the West Lake School of Art and the Haz Art School (1917-1918). Returning to Colorado, she studied art with Catherine and Henry Ricter at Western State College where she earned a BA degree in 1919. The next year she went to Chicago and became a student of muralist James E McBurney and served as his assistant until 1924. During this time, she was also influenced by sculptor Lorado Taft. In 1925, she attended in New York the National Academy of Design, and 1926, the Art Students League. She also worked as an illustrator and painter of miniature animals during this period. In 1926, McAfee married Elmer Page Turner, an artist whom she had met on her parent's Colorado ranch, and that same year she visited Taos, New Mexico. Two years later, she and her husband settled there, and in 1929, they built the White Horse Studio, which continued to be her residence until 1993, when she moved to Pueblo, Colorado. In Taos, she became known for her pueblo paintings and her depictions of horses and other animals as well as Native Americans, ranch scenes, and landscapes. In 1981, she was voted Taos Artist of the Year. She also worked as a WPA artist, completing many commissions for post office locations such as Edmond, Oklahoma, and Clifton, Texas. 31.5" by 36" framed. I don't remember a time when I wasn't playing with some kind of art. I think everyone has the innate ability to do masterworks. What sets an artist apart from the everyday person is just the interest factor. I have an intense interest in drawing, painting, and sculpting. I was born at Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1940. Hobbs was a fairly new oil boom town, moving into the modern world when World War II came along. My folks were raised in Oklahoma and Texas, and their folks were part of the homesteading and settling, and farming and ranching of the West. My grandfather, on my mothers side, homesteaded around Weed, New Mexico, when my mom was about 5 years old. World War I disrupted that, when granpas' brother had to go into the Army, leaving 'granpa' to prove up on two homesteads and watch out for both families. When he thought he was going to get called up too. He traded the homesteads for some mules and a wagon and moved both families back to Fort Worth. That is just a typical story of all of us raised in the west. Some of us lived in towns and some stayed on the farms and ranches. My dad worked as a cowboy, farmer, oil field worker, and sheet metal worker, and I don't know what all. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC), and helped to plant wind rows and helped build a bridge and the trail in Grand Canyon. All I know is we moved a lot. My older brother was born in 1938 in Littlefield, Texas; my younger sister in Phoenix, Arizona; a younger brother in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and then another younger brother back in Hobbs. Some of my earliest memories are of making my toys out of clay. Then drawing all the time on what ever kind of paper I could get. I got hold of a roll of butcher paper when I was about 9, and remember drawing whole scenes right down the roll laid out on a cement floor. I remember making a lot of my own toys, whittling and carving them out of wood. I was sort of in different fantasy worlds, in that I made a lot of model airplanes and dressed in my western chaps and hat at the same time. And naturally I did adventure comic strips, especially when we were fighting the commies in Korea. The subject matter in my art was always varied, but the horse was always prominent. I 'dinked' with drawing and painting part time, as I discovered girls and cars, and sports and didn't know that a person could make a living doing artwork. After a stint in the Navy, I took a job with the Forest Service about 1970, and discovered Montana. I went in some Art Galleries in Kalispell, Montana, and saw that some guys were selling paintings. I said, "Heck, I can do that." So, I started doing paintings to sell, and started sculpting in wax. That started an adventure in Art, that continues today I learn from other Artists, books, TV shows, and anywhere that has something of interest. Mostly, I learn from trial and error. I think that masterpieces can be done in a closet, if that is the only space you have. But, I prefer to have a nice studio. I sometimes work on a series of paintings. Right now I am living in Lincoln, Nebraska, with my true Love, and have a nice studio. As I get a little older, I am having to narrow down my subject matter. I like the Old West Subjects best of all, but we aren't that far removed from the "Old West". So, I imagine that I will continue to do a mixture of old and new west, and anything with horses. I plan to do a series on the early longhorn cattle drives, and that may happen, if I can keep from straying too far. A few years ago, I went to Montana to do a series on the Longhorn, and wound up doing buffalo hunts and indians attacking stagecoaches. But, most everyone up there wanted me to do packer scenes, so I did a lot of packers and cowboys in slickers. I am using the Gray Ghost label because, some of my friends got to calling me the Gray Ghost when I would dissappear and reappear at different times and places. Actually, I was just looking for that perfect place to call home. A lot of the time I will hide out from the Rat Race and just paint. At the present time, this is the only place you will find my paintings. I am not working with any galleries right now. So, check back often to see new paintings. Randy Lee White is an expert on many subjects, both related to his heritage as a South Dakota Lower Brule Sioux, and to his affinity for pictographs as an artform and medium for relating history. Although White (born Whitehorse, but the artist dropped the "horse" as many Native Americans in his generation do) uses a variety of media in his art, the constant ingredient in his works is the use of pictographs to tell a story and to enlighten the viewer. White's goals and aspirations for his art are ambitious. He wants to educate, enlighten, entertain, and keep the artform of pictographs alive for future generations. His paintings tell of tension and struggle; the tension between life and death, Indian versus white, fate versus knowledge of fate. White currently lives in Questa, New Mexico, a community possessing many different cultural bodies. In this type of culture within a culture, White feels that he is judged on the fruits of his labor and not on his ethnic heritage. As is the case with many artists of minority culture, White does not want to be labeled and pigeonholed with a culturally-tied title, such as "Native American painter." This is especially important for White, since he is only half Native American. His father was French. He wants to be considered on the merits of his work, not by his heritage. Even though White has noble intentions of being considered an artist first and a Native American second, his work is overwhelmingly cultural in nature. White wants to convey how proud he is of his past, and his ancestors, but at the same time in a way that is not condescending or segregating to any other culture. He attended North Platte High School and received numerous art internships, but has had no formal art training. Most of his work covers 1800 Western U.S. culture; his paintings and sculptures of the American West are extremely detailed and heavily researched. Long still resides in North Platte in a historic, century old log cabin but his work is known in New Mexico, Germany, Arizona, Wyoming, and Minnesota. Some collectors of his work include John Wayne, George Montgomery, Henry Fonda, Ken Curtis, Amanda Blake, and Ben Johnson. In the heart of America lives Ted Long. Ted is dedicated entirely to the fascinating legacy of the old west, so much that his North Platte, Nebraska, studio is situated in a century-old log cabin on a ranch his great-grandfather homestead in the 1800's. Within sight of his home is the historic plains where the Sioux, Cheynne and Pawnee Indian tribes followed great herds of buffalo, and where cattle stampedes, battles between calvary and Indians, and the continuous migration of settlers west was commonplace. Inspired by the rustic and beautiful surroundings of his homeland, Long's works have an exciting touch of stark realism that puts his artistry in a class by itself. Western hospitality was the order of the day when President Ronald Reagan had lunch at the Long Ranch in 1987. Long presented the President with "The Last Farewell", a bronze of Buffalo Bill Cody. In 1978 Long was commissioned by the Nebraska State Historical Society to do a life-sized bronze bust of Ponca Chief Standing Bear. In 1979, he received the Old West Trails Foundation Art Award. Bob Scriver No More Forever Bronze

Very nice bronze. Was produced in very limited numbers. 15" tall. Robert "Bob" Macfie Scriver (1914–1999) was a Montana sculptor who was born on the Blackfeet reservation of Anglophone Quebec parents. Scriver was a scholar of Blackfoot Indian culture and history who knew and associated with Blackfoot historian James Willard Schultz in the earlier part of his life. He specialized in western subjects, but it is more accurate to associate him with the American Beaux Arts-educated sculptors who became prominent at the turn of the 19th century. His first efforts were small inexpensive souvenir wildlife figurines cast in plaster and air-brushed in natural colors. A parallel career in taxidermy and a fondness for hunting supported the increasingly accurate portrayals of these animals.

Very nice pen and ink drawing. Action packed scene. 14.5" by 16.5" framed. Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault, later to be known as Will James, was born on June 6, 1892, in Quebec, Canada. Known for both his writing and his precise pencil drawings, Will's drawing experiences began on his mother's kitchen floor. At a young age, he departed Canada and traveled to the United States, working and drifting primarily as a cowboy. He served in the army and soon began selling his sketches. In 1920 he married, and shortly after that, he had a brief period of study at Yale University, but that enrollment was short lived because he felt closed in by the environment and missed his wife Alice. During that time, he painted the occasional still life, which was atypical of him. His writing career began when he sent in an essay, accompanied with illustrations, to the New York offices of Scribner's. His easy-going and casual style, with drawings, provided a combination that editor Maxwell Perkins liked. (Perkins also worked with Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and other notables) James' pencil drawings were precise and depicted his own experiences as a cowboy. His first novel, Smoky, was introduced in 1926 and won the Newberry medal for literature from the American Library Association. He also produced an oil by the same name, again his most famous and recognized work. Two years later his first writing of Bucking Horse Riders was sold, and since then has never been out of print. His last book, "The American Cowboy" was written in 1942. He wrote and illustrated 23 books in all, with appeal to a wide audience. His art appeared in the pages of books and periodicals, as well as illustrating the works of other authors. Will James spent his latter years at his home in Billings, Montana, and on his ranch, the "Rocking R Ranch", at Pryor Creek, Montana. During his lifetime, he was fortunate to watch his popularity grow, as he witnessed movies made from his books. Despite his popularity and success as a novelist and artist, James had a tragic life. He served a short prison term for rustling, experienced an unpleasant marriage, and had a severe alcohol dependency. His life ended at an early age of 50 in 1942.

Frederick Kress Paintings California

Oil on canvas. Circa 1920. Painted at Kress's Home in San Francisco California. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on Jan. 7, 1888, the son of artist Carl Victor Kress. Fred Kress spent his childhood in Pittsburgh and high school years in Independence, MO. His arrival with his family in San Francisco was a few months before the disaster of 1906. While working with his father as a sign and scenery painter, he studied at the Institute of Art. During his five years at that school he also studied privately with local artists Maynard Dixon, C. Chapel Judson, and Emil Grebs. In 1912 Kress began making painting excursions into the Big Sur area, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Marin County when not working in the paint department of Foster & Kleiser (billboards), a position he held for 42 years. He exhibited with the San Francisco Art Ass'n until 1920 and after that time painted strictly for pleasure and was not known to have exhibited or sold any of his paintings. A resident of San Francisco until 1962, his last years were spent in Santa Rosa, CA where he died on Aug. 10, 1970. Using a bright palette, he painted small, realistic landscapes of northern California. Exh: San Francisco Art Association, 1913-16.

Provenance: One family of ownership since initial purchase, never before offered on the open market. There is a reserve on this lot. By the beginning of the twentieth century Joseph Farquharson had established himself as the foremost landscape painter in Scotland, making the subject of snow-covered Deeside his true domain. Throughout his life he balanced his artistic career with the inherited responsibility of laird of the family estate, Finzean in Aberdeenshire, where the Farquharson family has lived since 1579. He studied at the Edinburgh Trustees' Academy, where he was greatly influenced by Peter Graham, and from 1880 onwards spent time in the studio of Carolus-Duran in Paris where he met and became friends with American painter John Singer Sargeant. Paris at the end of the nineteenth century was a hotbed of artistic development and Farquharson was able to assimilate many of the concerns of the Impressionists and the Naturalists exhibiting there at the time. Most importantly, he understood the importance of working en plein air in front of the motif and depicting nature at different times of day and in different atmospheric conditions. An early example of the scale and power of his canvasses is A Joyless Winter Day (1883), now in the Tate Gallery, London. It depicts an icy snowstorm, which remarkably the artist painted in situ, from a specially constructed mobile painting hut, which even contained a stove. Farquharson frequently included a human figure in his compositions, introducing a sense of scale and presence in the frequently unwelcoming landscape. A factotum at the estate frequently used to help the artist by posing as a shepherd and one of the surviving anecdotes tells us how his model was getting rather blue during one sitting session in the winter, and the artist invited him to go into the mobile studio and warm up. The factotum however asked the artist whether he had finished or not and when they established he had not, he said that he would wait a little longer until Farquharson had completed his study. Farquharson sent one painting to the Royal Academy every year between 1894 and 1925, with the exception of 1914. He managed to create innovative and imaginative compositions every time, by finding an unexplored corner of his estate, going out to paint at different times of the day, and in different weather conditions, and even adopting a slightly elevated point of view. Light filtering through tree branches is at once dramatic and balanced against the coolness of the snow in the foreground. The violence and pathos of the sunset adds poetry to an otherwise mundane scene of a shepherd tending his sheep. Every rock, tree and shrub is lovingly described and mapped out, as only someone who really knows and understand the landscape and the local geography can paint it. Farquharson's landscapes not only serve to depict the Deeside countryside beautifully, they also serve as points of reflection and contemplation. The dramatic yet subtle juxtaposition of a winter landscape with a beautiful light bathing the scene offers the viewer space for reflection on the life of those living on the land, or more abstractly, on the lyrical beauty of nature.

Lenny Bay Montana Cowboy Bronze

16" tall, 12.5" long, 9" wide. Lenny was born in Hibbing, Minn., on May 30, 1920, to Emil and Helen Bay and moved to Butte at a young age. After graduating from Butte High School, he served on the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Butte and worked for the Butte Brewery for a short time. He then was a deputy sheriff for Silver Bow County Sheriff's Department and later a bailiff, until his retirement in 1982. On May 30, 1943, he married Ethel DeLong in Alameda, Calif. Lenny was well known for his bronze statues, which he sculptured out of wax and then formed into bronze. His attention to the smallest detail was astounding.

Maud Stumm Art Nouveau Watercolor Painting

14.5" by 14.5" framed. Watercolor on Paper Known as a portrait, figure, and still-life painter, Maud Stumm was born near Cleveland, Ohio, about 1866, the daughter of Frank A. and Lucy Stumm. After receiving her early education in the Cleveland public schools, she pursued her art education, from 1884 to 1888, at the Cleveland Art Club, and then attended the Art Students League in New York, where her instructors were Kenyon Cox and Siddons Mowbray. During the early 1890's, her watercolors were shown at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Boston Art Club. Later, after study in Paris with Oliver Merson (circa 1894-1895), she returned to New York, where she found much success designing illustrations for books, magazines and calendar's. These are extremely popular even today. She eventually began to spend time in Nantucket during the summers, where she was active in the art community as early as 1916. Maud Stumm was a founding member and regular contributor to the Nantucket Art Colony and its exhibits. She is also noted there for founding the Sidewalk Art Show in 1930. Achieving instant popularity, these outdoor exhibitions gave opportunity, recognition and chance for sales to many a struggling painter. In her obituary, the local Nantucket newspaper stated: "Miss Stumm was a familiar figure to Nantucketers. Possessing a rare and distinctive intellect as well as her talents with brush and canvas, she made a marked impression upon those who came to know her, and whoever grew to know her intimately found her a delightful conversationalist as well as a remarkable exponent of the art she loved so well."

Chester (Skip) Armstrong (Born 1948) is active/lives in Oregon. J Armstrong is known for Sculptor-wood totem and wildlife. Growing up in California during the 1960s, J Chester Armstrong graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in philosophy. He then went to Central America and was inspired by the Mayan Indian temple carvings. Following that time period, he moved to a small town in Vermont where he became fascinated with older building built by hand. He worked on restoring these buildings and began carving with tools. In central Oregon, he carves totems and also wild animals. He works on a large scale so usually begins with a 16 inch saw.

Franco Vianello Mountain Lion Bronze

Born in Venice, Italy in 1937 into a family with a tradition of over a century of sculptors and founders, he began his traditional training at nine and by eleven his skills and talents were recognized by the well-known sculptor, Napoleone Martinuzzi, who accepted him as an apprentice. At the age of thirteen, he qualified to study at the Institute of Arts in Venice where he received his master's degree. In 1959, Vianello came to the United States as an already recognized and respected sculptor having created many bronze works, including life-size bronzes. He has also restored historic works in piazzas and churches for many well-known collectors, including Peter Guggenheim. Vianello started a lost-wax sculpture foundry in Berkeley in 1960. He taught bronze sculpting techniques and set up lost-wax casting facilities, including at the University of California at Berkeley. After serving in the United States Army, he and his wife, Jane settled in the East Bay of San Francisco. He resumed his career in sculpture and some of his favorite works are historically correct pieces that depict early California life and some of its wild animals. He also enjoys sculpting and casting modern pieces, classical and thematic works. Many of his sculpture are 18-24 inches tall but Vianello also enlarges statues to heroic sizes and casting them in bronze. Some larger bronzes sculptures include: Tuna Fishermen Monument on Shelter Island in San Diego; Four Horsemen at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Bucking Horse for the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Pony Express in Old Town, Sacramento, California (co-sculptor); Leif Eriksson, Seattle, Washington. He has created bronze sculptures for: the Audobon Society, Champion International, Scripps Oceanographic Institute, Wells Fargo Bank, Dillingham Corporation, Levi Strauss Company, San Francisco Bohemian Club, San Diego Historical Society, and San Francisco Academy of Sciences. Vianello has received many awards and prizes for his work including the Trustees' Gold Medal unanimously voted by the directors of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center and National Academy of Western Art.

He and his three sisters and a brother were raised on a cattle ranch bordering the Assiniboine reservation near Harlem, MT. During the past 35 years, his love of the cowboy and of wildlife has inspired him to sculpt both subjects with "wild and wooly" action and empathy. However, his greatest interest lies in portraying the Indian people he has known and their way of life spanning the time of the last nomadic Indians to contemporary Indian people in the mainstream of modern society. Harvey has chosen to portray his ancestors and the people he knows in a representational art form foregoing the growing trend toward abstraction. Michael Garman The Outlaw Bronze

Title is "The Outlaw". 9.5" tall on base. Born in Fort Worth in 1938 and raised in Arlington, Texas, Michael Garman was eight years old when he began creating little pipe-cleaner men. "I would twist pipe cleaners around pipe cleaners to make the muscles, arms and legs, and other features just right," Michael Garman recalls “I used my mother’s sewing machine to design little cavalry uniforms and cowboy boots. I carved horses out of wood so that some of my guys were mounted. Then I’d gather up all my characters on my bed like a battle scene. I had guns and cannons and horses. Then the great battle began and my hero would get shot. I would arrange him just so, as he was dying. And I would cry and cry for him. I mean, I’d really be sobbing. And then I would scoop them all up and do it over again.†According to Michael Garman, that was his start on 1959-Guatemala, the path to becoming America’s Storyteller Sculptor. Then, in 1959, Michael Garman hitchhiked into Mexico with $35 in his pocket and his Nikon camera for what he thought would be a two-week sojourn. When his money ran out, he would charm his way into a restaurant, offering to sweep the floor or something for a bit to eat or a drink. More often than not, the owner would give him a meal and a place to sleep. “No one I asked hired me, but everyone fed me.†He hitchhiked his way further south through Central and South America. Two years later, he had traveled all the way to Santiago, Chile where he talked his way for free into the School of Fine Arts. It was here that he discovered his talent for sculpting. “I would sculpt my characters, street people, vendors and such,†Michael Garman relates, “and the school would fire them for free. Then I would go door to door and sell them for $5 or $10.†When he returned to the United States, Garman continued his vagabond lifestyle in the run-down neighborhoods of Dallas, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Colorado Springs. Initially, he continued to create one-of-a-kind sculptures. And, as his technique improved, his sculptures became more detailed. Inspired by the people he met on his hitchhiking journey, Michael’s early work depicted simple street moments – a tailor mending a garment, a woman on a bench, two ladies gossiping under an umbrella. As he had done in South America, as soon as he had a few sculptures finished, he would load them on his motor scooter and sell them door-to-door. Though he eventually made good money, Michael admitted to a growing emptiness. “I began to miss my own work,†he admits. “I discovered that I needed to be surrounded by my little characters, my pals. I still do to this day. I can’t live without my figures around me.†And so he decided to master the art of reproduction. “Writers do it. Musicians and filmmakers too. Could you imagine if John Steinbeck had only written one copy of The Grapes of Wrath?†Michael asks. “And only one person, one rich muckity-muck was able to read those words?! What a crime that would be. What a loss! As a sculptor, I can do the same thing that a writer or a musician does. I can publish my art. The trick is to make sure that every reproduced copy is just as detailed, just as rich and just as authentic as the original. Sure, it’s hard to master. But it’s supposed to be hard. That’s what makes it fun.†In the late 1960s, Michael Garman moved into the SoMa region of San Francisco where he found a studio above an old print shop. “Man, I landed in the center of wino town,†Garman recalled. “I loved it.†Inspired by the neighborhood, Michael’s sculptures began to become more realistic, gritty, and honest. Soon he began working at a local theatre company. It was here that he learned stage craft, illusion, as well as good business. “It was an important time in my life; that was my Harvard Business School,†Garman relates. After years spent as a real-life vagabond throughout North and South America, Michael Garman eventually settled in Colorado Springs in 1971. It was here that he perfected his gritty, Americana style. He also began a 40-year project to bring to life his vagabond experiences with a new art form – sculptural theater. He began work on Magic Town in 1975, and opened it 10 years and 1 million dollars later. “It’s a work-in-progress,†he admitted. And over the following three decades, Michael has added magical illusions, holographic effects, detailed alleyways and more. “Think of a 3,000 square-foot dollhouse,†Michael describes. “A gritty blend of Walt Disney and Norman Rockwell.†Peek into a window and you might see a woman teaching piano lessons. Then the Magic-Town-images200x581 lights fade. A few seconds later, the lights come up and all the figures in the scene have changed. Now, as you peer into the window, you discover Michael Garman himself, back in his San Francisco studio sculpting a favorite piece – Flying Leather. Each scene captures a moment in time – a pool
Title is Trailing Hostiles. Oil on canvas. 30.25" by 42" framed. Irvin "Shorty" Shope (b. May 11, 1900- d. 1977) Painted 11 Mountie subjects between 1959-1960. Irvin "Shorty" Shope was raised on a ranch in Montana, and fell under the influence of the western painter Edgar S. Paxson while still in high school. Between 1919 and 1930, Shope worked as a cowboy on Montana ranches, while studying art through a correspondence course. Beginning in 1925, he first exhibited his paintings in Montana, and received some commercial assignments. Having sold his first painting at the age of thirty, Shope returned to college, majoring in art and history. In Helena, Montana, Shope began working as a commercial artist for the state government, and at that time also spent a few months studying under the well-known illustrator Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central School of Art in New York. Shope's usual subjects were cowboys, the Blackfoot Indians, mountains and deserts, and all his works have a distinctly western look. The eleven paintings he created for The Northwest Paper Company in 1959 and 1960 also have the look of the west about them, often featuring the Mountie with Indians, ranchers, and cattle.

Ace Powell Montana Oil on Board Indian Painting

16" by 22" framed. Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, Ace Powell became a painter of western action scenes, wild animals, and Indian figures in realistic style and in the tradition of Charles Russell. Powell's trademark signature on his paintings is the ace of diamonds, which also became his nickname. He was prolific, creating between 12,000 and 15,000 paintings and sculptures. He considered oil to be his best medium although he loved sculpting in terra cotta, stone, and wood. He also was skilled at etching. His life has involved many changes of location and personal circumstance, much of it due to his alcoholism, which he eventually overcame. Eventually he settled in Kalispell. He moved to Montana at age one month. His mother was a schoolteacher, and his father was a cowboy foreman on the Ben Steven's horse ranch, then a homesteader, and eventually a worker for the Glacier National Park Service. Charlie Russell' s summer home was near the Powell home, and the Russells were family friends and encouraged Asa, nicknamed "Ace" in his artistic talent. He loved the Blackfeet Indians so much his father sent him to school on their reservation, and these people became one of his most frequent subjects. He also worked on the Bar X Six Ranch where he was a saddle-horse guide for many visiting successful western artists. He built a studio in Choteau, Montana and from there worked as a wood animal sculptor and also did book illustrations. After his first wife died when he was 29, he was briefly in the Army, worked in a defense plant, and was in the plastic figurine business in Yakima, Washington, but his partner ran off with his second wife, obviously terminating their business arrangement. He returned to Glacier Park for six years with his young son and then at age 40 enrolled in the University of Montana on the G.I. Bill. But he disliked the abstract art being promoted, so he quit and took the Famous Artists correspondence course, which really helped him down the path that established his art career. In 1952, he married artist Nancy McLaughlin, and in Hungry Horse, Montana they successfully operated a gallery, but it burned to the ground in 1964. They divorced, and in 1965, he married Thelma Conner.

His ability in art was apparent at an early age and he was always the artist in class, even in grade school. In high school he started pin striping cars and painting signs. His favorite subject and most of his attention was spent in art class in Walla Walla high school and later, Columbia Basin College. He started a career in retail advertising and commercial art and moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon. Influenced by the outstanding Western Art at the Favell Museum in Klamath Falls, Jim started oil painting seriously in the 1970's after completing the "Famous Artists Course". Showing his work at Western Art Shows and galleries in the Northwest. Jim changed careers and went into retail management which limited his time, but not his desire for painting and his dream of being a full time artist. He spends much of his time out in the field gathering material and studying his subjects. James is inspired to capture the beauty of the American west working in oils, his wildlife fine art paintings and those of the working cowboy are popular with collectors for capturing the accuracy of the animals and the beauty of their environment. New York City taught many lessons, and a longing for the wilderness was one. Moved to Taos, NM in 1924 and became the youngest & last member of the Taos Society of Artists in 1926. Began teaching at the Taos Field School of Art in 1929 then moved to Albuquerque in 1937 where he was artist-in-residence at the University of New Mexico until his retirement in 1963.
Harvey Otis Young Denver Colorado Painting

Born in Lyndon, Vermont, Harvey Young became one of Colorado's leading 19th-century artists, known for his Rocky Mountain landscapes and mining scenes in oil and watercolor. Young attended St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, and in 1859 went to California, via Panama, to prospect for gold and pursue painting. He established a studio in San Francisco where he earned an excellent reputation. After serving in the Civil War, he returned to California in 1866 and established a studio. Between 1869 and 1879, he made six trips to Europe to further his art study, which included classes in Paris at the Academie Julian and private classes with Carolus Duran as well as academic training in Munich. In 1878, his work was exhibited at the Paris Salon. He also retained his ties to the American West. In the early 1870s, he went with his wife and children on the railroad's first cross-continental train trip to California. By 1879, he determined to mine for silver in Colorado, and earning a fortune from mining, he abandoned painting for many years. However, he lost the money during the Panic of 1893, and he returned to painting, focusing especially on scenes along the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. Later Railroad personnel loaned him the use of a private studio car in which he traveled and painted advertising literature for the railroad. For his painting, he had a special formula that combined oil and watercolor, and then he covered the paintings with a varnish that he invented after years of experimentation. His travels also took him often to southern Arizona between 1889 and 1894. There, traveling by burro, he did many sketches including drawings of Tucson in the winter of 1890, although he was much more focused on business matters than his art talents. Young was in Denver in 1893 and was a charter member of the Artists Club formed in December of that year for the purpose of "advancing the Art interests of Denver." The Club consisted of members who were themselves artists, including Emma Richardson Cherry, Charles Partridge Adams, and Charles M. Carter. The organization later made it their mission to purchase art work for a collection to be housed in their art museum, a building that did not materialize until 1922 when the Chappell family gifted the group, now called the Denver Art Association, the family's home. The Chappell House was immediately renamed the Denver Art Museum and has evolved into one of Denver's premier cultural agencies, which is currently housed in distinctive architectural structures designed by Geo Ponti and Daniel Liebeskind. 14" by 26" framed. St Marys Lake Glacier Park Montana. Leonard Lopp (May 1, 1888 - December 3, 1974) was an American painter and muralist of the Pacific Northwest. He exhibited his work in the United States and Canada, and he did five murals in Kalispell, Montana. His paintings were collected by President Harry Truman and FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. Lopp became a painter and muralist of the Pacific Northwest. He did five murals in Kalispell, Montana: four in the Conrad National Bank, and one in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He was a member of the Montana Institute of the Arts, and he exhibited his work in the United States and Canada. His paintings often came in handmade frames. Lopp also restored paintings in the C. M. Russell Museum Complex in Great Falls, Montana.

Still Life Painting of Peaches. 18" by 22". In need of some conservation work as shown. Hall made trips to the West in the 1850s via the Oregon Trail. He painted scenery in and around Portland before moving south to San Francisco where he painted a huge panorama of the Overland Trail and of California. From 1861 to 1866 he lived in South America where he had gone for his brother's health. He pursued his profession there until the threat of war between Chile and Spain forced his return to the States. Returning to NYC, in 1867 he sailed to England and France, and then spent three years of art study in Munich. Upon his return to New York, he was active there for a few years and then settled in Chicago; however, he continued to be peripatetic. He was in Kansas in 1878, Montana in 1885, and then made another trip to Portland. Hall died in Chicago in 1896.

William Henry Chandler Pastel Still Life

18.25" by 21.5" framed. William Henry Chandler was a prolific pastel artist. Living in New Jersey and working from his studios in New York City, Chandler was a deeply religious man who created primarily landscape scenes. He also paints fruit and dead-game still life, seascapes and occasionally some foreign scenes. And not all "Chandler" pastels were created by Chandler's own hand. Rather, at the peak of his business, orders were sometimes so numerous that Chandler employed a stable of artists who created a large number of "original" pastels in the style of Chandler, who signed the "Chandler" name to them, and who sold them through the Chandler Studios. Most Chandler pastels were signed "Chandler" either by Chandler himself, or one of his staff artists. And frequently Chandler pastels left the studio unsigned. Often when sold in pairs, only one pastel of the pair would be signed.

Bob Wood was a prolifically talented artist, historian and speaker. His love for The West was evident in each stroke of his brush, etch of his pen and molding of clay from his fingers. His work was displayed at The Outlaw Inn located in Kalispell, MT during 1970's and 1980's until the Inn was sold. He went on to produce profoundly detailed sculptured works in bronze until the late 1980's. He died in 1999 in Washington State and he is buried in Kalispell, Montana.

Back states Faksimilie Reproduktion der Bundesdruckerei Berlin. Was acquired by previous owner from the Albrecht Durer Festival in Nurnberg Germany in 1972. Rembrandt was born in Leyden on July 15, 1606. In 1620 he became a student at the Latin School of Leyden University, but soon gave up his formal education to enter the studio of Jacob van Swanenburch. He continued his instruction in Amsterdam with Pieter Lastman and then Jan Pynas. In 1626 he returned to Leyden, an independent master, and entered into partnership with Gerald Dou (1628). Three years later he settled in Amsterdam, where he remained until his death. In that city his first big portrait group, "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" gained him immediate recognition and a fashionable portrait following. Rembrandt, however, could not accept that sort of career and "The Night Watch", finished in 1642, aroused the hostility of his sitters. Titus, the artist's only son was born in 1641, the year preceding his mother, Saskia's, death. In their eight years of married life, Saskia had born Rembrandt four children, but only Titus survived childhood. His financial affairs meanwhile had become disastrously involved and were rapidly getting out of control, and in 1656 he was declared insolvent. He continued consistently to work, despite his misfortunes, living with Hendrickje Stoffels, who had been his housekeeper, and Titus, and in 1654 a daughter, Cornelia was born. The number of his paintings, etchings and drawings is unusually large. No artist has ever left so complete a record of his own appearance as has Rembrandt. He used himself constantly as a model, from his boyhood to the very year of his death, and it has been estimated that he must have made at least two self-portraits a year throughout his life. He died on October 4, 1669 and was buried in the Westerkerk.
Dan Dailey Simple Complexities in Drawings & Glass

Dan Dailey, born in Philadelphia in 1947, is an artist who, with the support of a team of artists and crafts people, creates sculptures and functional objects in glass and metal. Dan Dailey's career in glass has spanned more than 40 years. Emerging from the Studio Glass movement initiated by Harvey Littleton, Dailey's work has branched out from the mainstream by the incorporation of metal into many of the sculptures. Additionally, he has worked with several glass companies, in particular as an independent artist/ designer for Crisallerie Daum, France for more than twenty years. He has taught at many glass programs and is a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design* where he founded the glass program. Since 1971, Dailey's work has been featured in more than 90 exhibitions and included in over 300 juried or invitational group shows. He is married to Linda MacNeil, an artist also working with glass and metal, primarily in the studio or art jewelry field. Dailey first encountered glass as an artist's medium when helping to construct a small glass blowing studio at the Philadelphia College of Art* with Roland Jahn, a ceramics teacher at the college. From building basic equipment and observing processes, Dailey soon began working with glass. In 1970, he received a teaching fellowship at the Rhode Island School of Design*, and there became the first graduate student of Dale Chihuly, who was teaching there at the time. Dailey and others also assisted in building the RISD glass studio and working on concepts for illuminated sculpture. In 1972, he received a Fulbright Hays Fellowship* and worked at the Venini Factory in Murano as an independent artist/designer. There he created a series of blown glass and brass sculptural lamps. From 1973 to 1985, he established the glass curriculum and taught glass and ceramics at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. With students, he built the studio and equipment and also created much work of his own including illuminated sculpture, vase forms and Vitrolite* wall reliefs. In 1975, he taught at the Pilchuck Glass School* in Stanwood, Washington; and in 1976 he worked as an independent artist at Christallerie Daum in Nancy, France, and developed an ongoing relationship with that company. In 1980, he received a fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Advanced Visual Studies in Cambridge and co-taught "Glass, Gas and Electricity", a class with German artist Otto Piene. From 1984, Dailey was an independent artist/designer for Steuben Glass* in Corning, New York, and at the request of the company produced sports-themed designs on vases including the design for Ice Dancers. Other artist/design associations and commissions include the Fenton Art Glass Company in Williamstown, West Virginia, 1984-1985; Rockefeller Center in New York City, 1987, where he made a cast glass relief mural titled Orbit for the Rainbow Room. At the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Dailey had a solo exhibition in 1987. In the accompanying catalogue, New York art critic Henry Geldzahler wrote an essay in which he noted: "Dan Dailey's achievement is in the seamless marriage he effects in his work in every medium between the idiosyncratic convolutions of his inner landscape and the classic harmony and lucidity of the great tradition in glass, of whom Daum, Nancy and Lalique are giants. Dailey's work joins in that tradition, but with a contemporary spin that causes the viewer to smile in complicity." In 2007, Harry N. Abrams Press published a 384 page volume titled Dan Dailey. In 2012, Dailey was named Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In the last several decades of his career, he has continued to lecture and teach, and even wrote a children's book, Glassigator, at the request of The Toledo Museum of Art.

The design was developed with Sonja Holy Eagle, an Oglala Lakota artist who was trained by her grandmother in painting buffalo hides to record the stories of the people. For this collaboration, she has worked with us to adapt her distinctive style of " Winter Count" to convey the hopeful message of the return of the buffalo. The magpie is known as the buffalo’s companion, and the presence of the magpie heralds their return. When this blanket is wrapped around a person, the large buffalo comes together to symbolize a complete restoration of the buffalo in tribal communities.
