John Mather (Australian, 1848-1916) watercolor painting of a landscape. Untitled. Signed lower left corner and dated 1914. Excellent condition with minor toning. Sight size is 8 1/2" x 12", framed to 13" x 17". Mather was Scottish and migrated to Australia in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolors, as well as a prolific etcher. Leader of many artist societies in Australia, he was also associated with the plein-air artist camps that grew around Sydney in the late 19th century. Three of his works are owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.

RARE Hummel Just Resting Bell

Very rare, unmarked and never-released Hummel bell, with no TMK at all. Penciled notation on outside of bell reads "230 g, 420 ccm." The bell does indeed weigh 229.4 grams, and "ccm" might well mean "cubic centimeters." Inside the bell is "Neu 9/79." Designed by Gerhard Skrobek in 1978 for release in 1985. Bell measures 7-1/2" high and is in fine condition.

Five volume set of The Works of Byron, each beautifully fore-edge painted. Published by John Murray, London, 1823. Custom slip case marked "Fore Edge Paintings." Each measure 6 1/2" tall. Part of a collection of books from Dromoland Castle in today's sale. Provenance: Dromoland Castle, County Clare, Ireland. From the library of Sir Edward O'Brien, 2nd Baronet (1705-1765), inherited by his son, Sir Lucius O'Brien, 3rd Baronet (1731-1795), then by his son, Sir Edward O'Brien, 4th Baronet (1773-1837). The library was pretty much intact until 1962, when Donough O'Brien, the 16th Baron Inchiquin, was forced to sell the castle and its contents at public auction. The December 1962 sale -- conducted by James Adams & Sons of Dublin -- was attended by Gioia Marconi Braga, the daughter of Beatrice O'Brien and inventor Guglielmo Marconi. O'Brien was the daughter of the 14th Baron Inchiquin (1839-1900). Braga purchased a number of volumes from the auction and brought them to the U.S. Thence by descent in the family.

Interestingly, Roosevelt was himself a New Yorker AND a philatelist, so this cut signature could have come from a franked postcard. It appears that the collector who assembled this gem of an album continued adding to it for a couple of decades, as there are a few added pages from the 1960s in it, as well.
