Burt Reynolds Stroker Ace Champagne Set Given To Johnny Bruce

The violin case champagne set was a gift to Johnny Bruce from Burt Reynolds for his work and time spent on set during the filming of Stroker Ace, a comedy / action movie released in 1983. A spoof on the growing popularity of Nascar and racing, Johnny was a natural fit as he had been a fan since the early 60's and worked as a crew member from dirt track days to the somewhat glamorous days that evolved with the growing popularity of the sport. He worked for driver Benny Kerley and later Harry Gant, both Alexander Co natives throughout the 70's. In 1981 Harry brought his crew along when he began driving the #33 Skoal Bandit Pontiac, owned by Hal Needham and Burt Reynolds at that time, later by Leo Jackson. Hal Needham was the more hands on owner and he and Johnny struck it off immediately, becoming close friends, so when the movie evolved, Hal brought Johnny along as an chauffeur and assistant during the filming. He also had a couple of cameo roles as an extra in the movie and was on the pit crew as the jackman wearing a chicken suit for Stroker Ace. He received a paycheck for $10,000 dollars. Filming was a fun and memorable experience for all of the local personalities and real drivers on set. Included in the making of the film were drivers Neil Bonnet, Dale Earnhart, Tim Richman, Harry Gant, Kyle Petty, Terry Labonte, Ricky Rudd and Cale Yarbrough. Premier night was at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, NC. It didn't receive rave reviews from film critics but is still a fan favorite to this day. Johnny and Hal became lifelong friends with Hal being Johnny's best man when he married in 1994.

Original 1960's Fugitive Television Series Star David Janssen's Golf Bag

This golf bag belonged to David Janssen, an actor most famous for his role as Dr. Richard Kimble in the original American crime drama The Fugitive, a series filmed from 1963 to 1967. He was the 3rd husband of Dani Crayne Greco Janssen Needham, a Hollywood model, actor and socialite. David Jansenn died from a heart attack 1980 and his widow married Hal Needham in 1982 during the time that he and Burt Reynolds owned the #33 Skoal Bandit Pontiac in the NASCAR racing series. Johnny was an original crew member for Harry Gant, their driver. Hal Needham and Johnny Bruce hit it off immediately, spending time together off track too and remained lifelong friends. On a visit to Hal and Dani's home, being a fan of The Fugitive, Johnny made a big deal over her previous husband and she later gave him David's golf bag that she still owned. The tags on the bag are from memorable clubs or courses played by Johnny. A putter and a #1 driver are from a Charlotte golf tournament. Included is a tee shirt, "Skoal Bandit Race Team loves Dani Needham".
