John Louis Clarke Bronze Mountain Goat Montana

Artist is John Louis Clarke of Glacier Park Montana. Work is entitled "Climbing Goat". 7.25" tall, 5.25" long. How could a Native American boy lacking the ability to hear or speak and raised at the edge of what would become Glacier National Park grow to become one of the most celebrated and collected wood sculptors in American history? It’s quite a story. John L. Clarke (1881-1970) experienced a meteoric rise to national notoriety. Many individuals and the Native American experience molded this man—who was made with the bark on. John L. Clarke was born the grandson of Blackfeet Chief Stands Alone and infamous frontiersman Malcom Clarke (1817-1869). Malcom’s murder led in part to the 1870 Baker Massacre of 217 Blackfeet on the Marias River in northern Montana—an event burned into the memory of every Blackfeet. Andrew R. Graybill, author of The Red and the White: A Family Saga of the American West wrote, "The Clarkes thus offer a rich historical lens through which to view the shifting grounds of race in the West and the wider nation during the mid-nineteenth century. They are also ideal in another sense: their individual stories are enormously compelling, for both the historian and the general reader." Robbed of his hearing by scarlet fever at just two years old, John and his family moved from the hardscrabble ranch life of central Montana near Highwood to Midvale, now East Glacier Park, on the western end of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. As cultural historian and John L. Clarke biographer Larry Len Peterson wrote in Blackfeet John L. “Cutapuis†Clarke and the Silent Call of Glacier National Park: America’s Wood Sculptor, “He felt a visceral fascination with the natural world and found his home in the grandeur of Glacier country in northwestern Montana. Wilderness, especially big wilderness, is where wildness most often happens, and it was where Clarke discovered himself and subjects for his art.†After attending several deaf schools in North Dakota, Montana, and Wisconsin, Clarke worked in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a master wood carver for several years and then returned to Midvale around 1910, started sculpting, and never wavered. He rose to fame by applying his passions for the Glacier country, its wildlife, and Native Americans to the arts of wood carving, sculpture, sketching, and painting. Louis W. Hill, Great Northern Railway president and unflagging promoter of Glacier National Park, played a significant part in that rise by including Clarke in a clever and well-planned promotional campaign that was initiated soon after the park was created in 1910. John L. Clarke and his wife Mamie were very moved by the visits of their dear friend Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) who in 1918 urged Clarke to embrace his Native American heritage. Russell understood that it would play well to tourists visiting the park. Soon, Clarke’s carvings often were signed not only with “J. L. Clarke,†but also at times “Cutapuis,†Piegan for “Doesn’t Talk.†Taking a cue from Russell, Clarke eventually illustrated his letters to friends and patrons and also began using an Indian head cipher with his signature. Clarke and Joe De Yong would be close friends for fifty years. In 1918 there was national recognition for Clarke when a prestigious gold medal was presented by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia for a carving of a bear. Clarke exhibited there in 1917, 1918, 1922, 1923-1932, and 1935. Many more national honors would follow. Clarke created art that was collected not only by adoring tourists, but also by the famous such as his friends Charles M. Russell and Joe De Yong—who was also deaf; John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; and President William Harding, among many others. His 1956 masterwork, The Blackfeet Encampment, four feet by thirteen feet, graces the Montana Historical Society in Helena. Well-received retrospective exhibitions followed at the MHS in 1993/1994 and 2014. On March 1, 2003, John L. Clarke was inducted into the Gallery of Outstanding Montanans at the MHS. The citation for John L. Clarke in part read, “Facing odds that would have deterred lesser men, he crafted a career as a renowned Blackfeet artist. His legacy survives as a worthy inspiration for all Montanans.†Spokesman for the nominating committee, Kirby Lambert, gave special praise and lauded Clarke as “…one of my personal favorites†of the almost three dozen individuals in the Gallery. The Montana Historical Society in Helena; Charles M. Russell Museum, Great Falls, Montana; Museum of the Plains Indian, Browning, Montana; Miracle of America Museum, Polson, Montana; and Glacier County Museum, Cut Bank, Montana have impressive collections of his art, among others. His archival collection is located at the John L. Clarke Gallery, East Glacier Park, Montana.

Elmer Sprunger Montana Squirrel Oil on Canvas

11" by 13.25" framed. Elmer Sprunger grew up on the west side of the Rockies around Bigfork, Flathead and Swan Lake. His sophomore year of high school was in Butte, where his art teacher was Elizabeth Lochrie. Her lessons took hold. Sprunger married Marie in 1940, and they moved to Seattle where his art training helped him to draw the patterns for Liberty Ships onto huge steel plates and to learn drafting. He worked in the woods cutting vitally needed timber and then joined the Army. After a year in California and another in Hawaii, he returned to the Olympic Peninsula where he worked in logging, construction, and road-building. In 1950 he came back to his boyhood haunts near Swan Lake. Besides carpentry, he did sign painting and made posters. His goal was never art so much as hunting and fishing. The three went together in his thinking. He and Marie have built their own comfortable house. Two of his major principles are fitting the animals to the land, so that none show up in a painting where they would never be in life, and making each animal a unique individual. He does use a camera, but only to record details for reference later.

Wonderful old bag. Complete with tribal provenance along with a signed an notarized Affidavit. Has been examined by Putt Thompson and is guaranteed to be authentic. Letter accompanying the bag reads as follows: The Lakota Tomahawk Brass Pipe and Cavalry Boot Top Tobacco Bag were owned and handed down in biological order by Chief Iron Shell of the 1800's. Chief Iron Shell acquired the boot top pipe bag from a deceased cavalry man after he fought in the battle of the Little Big Horn aka Custer's Last Stand in southeastern Montana. Treaty Chief Iron Shell migrated to Rosebud South Dakota from the Whetstone Bay area on the Missouri River just off highway 18 in South Dakota with Chief Spotted Tail. The Iron Shell extended family was located and allotted land in the southwest part of the Indian District known as Upper Cut Meat in Southwest Rosebud Reservation. Isaac Iron Shell Sr. who passed to the spirit world in the 1960s was the primary descendant of Treaty Chief Iron Shell. He held the pipe and bag for many years. Isaac Sr handed the Lakota Pipe and Tobacco Bag to his son Isaac Iron Shell Jr. Isaac Iron Shell Jr. passed away in the late 1970s. Ike Jr., as he was known on the Rosebud Reservation handed the pipe and bag to Carl Waln Sr. for safe keeping in approximately 1970. Interesting, the Sioux word for Pipe is Chanupa. Chanupa can be translated to English as two sticks. Authentic ceremonial pipe stems were carved this way for sacred purposes. Brass Tomahawk Pipes could be used as a symbol of Peace or a weapon in War.

Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. He was born May 29, 1932, in Rush Springs, Okla., to the late Olva Franklin and Lena Ray (Black) Castleberry. Archie proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was a self-employed building contractor until 1978, when he began merchandise trading. Archie was an accomplished carpenter as well as a creative artist. His artistic ability led him to making bronzes. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Jo Castleberry, of Weatherford; stepdaughters, Melinda Hawthorne and Robbie Prentice; daughter, Doris Heider; son, Brad Castleberry; sister, Doris Quisenberry; brother, Metz Castleberry and wife, Barbara; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Michael Chiago Indian Gouache Painting

21 3/4" by 25 3/4" framed. Michael Chiago is one of very few Southern Arizona Indian painters to achieve national recognition. His background includes a stint as an Indian fancy dancer that included performing at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, barber school, and study in commercial art at Maricopa Community College. He was born in the Kohatk Village on the Tohono O’odham reservation. His tribal lineage is Tohono O’odham, Pima-Maricopa. The Tohono O’odham reservation is roughly the size of Connecticut with a population of about 27,000. Michael is a veteran of the U.S. Marines whose tour of duty included Vietnam. He began his painting career in the early 70’s and is self-taught, although he studied commercial art at Maricopa Community College and worked as a commercial artist before setting out on his life adventure. The welcoming appeal of his colorful paintings reaches far beyond the desert southwest, to portray a time and place that is distinctly the Sonoran Desert. His work provides a look at the way indigenous people of the Tucson Basin lived in the recent past and how they incorporate the same cultural traditions today which is in contrast to those of the Pueblo and Navajo. Each work of art is carefully painted with the utmost accuracy, from the stitch marks in the basketry to the pottery designs and clothing of the villagers. Brilliant desert skies and cactus in bloom seem almost lifelike. Michael now creates many one-of-a-kind paintings each year of the culture that remains visible and vibrant to him since his early childhood. Michael is known for his watercolors, but has created murals (Gila River Indian Community’s Huukum Cultural Center) as well as posters for Indian Art shows including O’odham Tash in Casa Grande, Arizona, and the Heard Museum in Phoenix. He was also commissioned to illustrate a children’s book "Singing Down the Rain" (Moreillon 1997), about Tohono O’odham desert culture. He was an adviser for an exhibit at the Heard Museum, simply called “Rain†and traveled to London’s British Museum of Man with that exhibit. One of his murals hangs in the permanent exhibit “Home†at the Heard in Phoenix. He has also graced the pages of magazines such as Time-Life, Reader's Digest and Arizona Highways. Other displays can be seen at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort, Tucson Botanical Gardens and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. A number of awards have been won and Michael participates in several prominent shows. SWAIA’s Indian Market and the Heard Museum Indian Fair & Market are among them. He was selected as the poster artist for the Pueblo Grande Indian Market held in Phoenix each December. Michael is the recipient of the prestigious 2006 Arizona Living Treasure Award, plus he was one of the two 2005 Honored Artists of the Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market which he shared with Internationally-known artist, Oreland Joe. 23" by 28 3/4" framed. Alaska regionalist painter Rie Mounier Munoz was the child of Dutch parents who immigrated to California, where she was born and raised. She is known for her colorful scenes of everyday life in Alaska. Rie (from Marie) Munoz (moo nyos), studied art at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. In 1950, she traveled up the Inside Passage by steamship, fell in love with Juneau, and gave herself until the boat left the next day to find a job and a place to live. Since then Juneau has been home to Munoz. She began painting small vignettes of Alaska soon after arriving in Juneau, and also studied art at the University of Alaska-Juneau. Munoz painted in oils in what she describes as a "painstakingly realistic" style, which she found stiff and "somewhat boring." Her breakthrough came a few years later when an artist friend introduced her to a versatile, water-soluble paint called casein. The immediacy of this inexpensive medium prompted an entirely new style. Rie's paintings became colorful and carefree, mirroring her own optimistic attitude toward life. With her newfound technique she set about recording everyday scenes of Alaskans at work and at play. Of the many jobs she has heldjournalist, teacher, museum curator, artist, mother, Munoz recalls one of her most memorable was as a teacher on King Island in 1951, where she taught 25 Eskimo children. The island was a 13-hour umiak (a walrus skin boat) voyage from Nome, an experience she remembers vividly. After teaching in the Inupiat Eskimo village on the island with her husband during one school year, she felt a special affinity for Alaska's Native peoples and deliberately set about recording their traditional lifestyles that she knew to be changing very fast. For the next twenty years, Rie practiced her art as a "Sunday painter," in and around prospecting with her husband, raising a son, and working as a freelance commercial artist, illustrator, cartoonist, and curator of exhibits for the Alaska State Museum. During her years in Alaska, Munoz has lived in a variety of small Alaskan communities, including prospecting and mining camps. Her paintings reflect an interest in the day-to-day activities of village life such as fishing, berry picking, children at play, as well as her love of folklore and legends. Munoz says that what has appealed to her most were "images you might not think an artist would want to paint," such as people butchering crab, skinning a seal, or doing their laundry in a hand-cranked washing machine. In 1972, with her hand-cut stencil and serigraph prints selling well in four locations in Alaska, she felt confident enough to leave her job at the Alaska State Museum and devote herself full time to her art. Freed from the constraints of an office job, she began to produce close to a hundred paintings a year, in addition to stone lithograph and serigraph prints. From her earliest days as an artist, Rie had firm beliefs about selling her work. First, she insisted the edition size should be kept modest. When she decided in 1973 to reproduce Eskimo Story Teller as an offset lithography print and found the minimum print run to be 500, she destroyed 200 of the prints. She did the same with King Island, her second reproduction. Reluctantly, to meet market demand, she increased the edition size of the reproductions to 500 and then 750. The editions stayed at that level for almost ten years before climbing to 950 and 1250. Munoz also believed her art should remain accessible to the people who provide the subject matter for her paintings, -the cannery workers and fishermen and residents of rural Alaska. Her first stencil prints sold for $9 and $12 when they were issued in 1969 and 1970. With few exceptions, new releases were still priced at $50 or less ten years later. Her work has been exhibited many solo watercolor exhibits in Alaska, Oregon and Washington State, including the Charles and Emma Frye Art Museum, Alaska State Museum in Juneau, Anchorage Historical and Fine Arts Museum, Tongass Historical Museum in Ketchikan, and Yukon Regional Library in Whitehorse; Yukon Territory, and included in exhibits at the Smithsonian Institute and Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. Munozs paintings have graced the covers of countless publications, from cookbooks to mail order catalogs, and been published in magazines, newspapers, posters, calendars, and two previous collections of her work: Rie Munoz, Alaskan Artist (Alaska Northwest Publishing Company, 1984) and Rie Munoz, Artist in Alaska (Rie Munoz Ltd., 1987). Galleries throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Norway, Japan, England, and Holland carry her reproductions and original prints. Although Rie usually paints Alaskan subjects, collectors of her work live across the nation. Many collect thematically, such as focusing on images of Russian churches, for example, or all the bird prints, or the self-portraits. Now in her seventies, Rie completes fifty to sixty pain

Lot of 9 original drawings. Born in Wales, Alaska, Robert Mayokok became a painter of subjects depicting his culture. He was a resident artist at the Alaska Treasure Shop for eighteen years, talking to visitors and designing Christmas cards, stationery, shopping bags, etc. His medium was ink and ink wash and then when he felt he had mastered that, he used color, usually on bleached animal skins including rabbit, caribou hide, cowhide and even pig skin. After 1970, he included three small birds in his drawings to symbolize the Holy Trinity of his Christian faith. He was very prolific, selling two to three-thousand drawings a year. From the money he earned, he would purchase plane tickets and fly to other places in Alaska to promote his artwork. Many of his sketches were reproduced on pottery, wall plaques, and other items. Growing up, he only attended school through the eighth grade but learned to speak English by studying Sears and Roebuck catalogs. A reproduction of a painting by Rembrandt in a classroom was his early inspiration to become a painter. When Mayokok was fifteen in 1918, his life changed drastically from tragic circumstances. His mother died and then a flu epidemic ravaged his village, killing his father, grandfather and many others. It was many weeks before help arrived to bury the dead in the isolated area. After that, he took a series of jobs including teacher, walrus hunter, fox trapper, reindeer herder, seiner, a gold and tin miner, longshoreman, and messboy on several boats. As a walrus hunter on a boat caught in an ice pack, he had a chance meeting with explorer Roald Amundsen on a schooner. He traveled to the Arctic with anthropologist Knud Rasmussen, and in 1922-23, became an interpreter for the Swedish Covenant Mission on Little Diomede. This experience led him to Christianity. Among his many youthful experiences was a trip to various cities in a boxcar with eight wild reindeer that were shown at each stop, the final one being Boston. In 1939 he took another herd of wild reindeer to the New York World's Fair for a company that outfitted Arctic and North Pole expeditions. After the Fair, Mayokok traveled and lectured on Eskimo life. From 1947 to 1950, he was hospitalized with tuberculosis and isolated from his family, and to avoid depression, he wrote stories about Eskimo life. He left the hospital before being officially discharged and financed his return trip home with his ivory engravings. Several years later, he had a tubercular relapse and spent two years in the Riverton Sanatorium in Seattle. During this time he began to paint and draw seriously, and after he was released he moved to Anchorage where he sold his drawings and began his residency at the Alaska Treasure Shop. He also wrote a series of stories about Eskimo life that were published, and he illustrated several books. In 1964-65, he was again at the New York World's Fair, demonstrating his paintings and talking about his culture. He died in 1983 and in addition to museums in the Northwest, his work is in the California Academy of Sciences and the Kodiak Historical Society. Several feature articles about him have been published: "My Life as an Eskimo" in "The Alaska Sportsman, August 1955 and September, 1955; "Robert Mayokok" in "The Alaska Journal," Vol. 6, 1976. His work has also been submitted to the Korea Art Exhibition, the New York Art Expo, and the Han Kook Art and Culture Association. Gouache on Paper. 32" by 44" framed. Cathy Corcilius, nicknamed "CAT," became known for her paintings of Indian women. Cat's paintings depict many common bonds of womanhood.....pride in heritage, respect for tradition, strength of character, passion, and often, tempting charm. In her later work she has turned to realistic still life paintings of various eclectic subjects, including Western. She also does paintings of American wildlife including depictions of wolves, mountain lions, coyotes, horses and even the lowly squirrel. She was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and lived with her parents on the Bahamas Islands, where her father was employed until Cat was of school age. Cat and her family moved to California, taking in all the sights along the way. Cat's father had an adventurous spirit and loved to take the less traveled routes. Cat's mother had an interest in everything Western and implanted the same interest in her daughter at a very young age. Many vacations were taken in the Southwest where Cat's curiosity about the American Indians and pioneer history grew. Cat was extremely interested in the American Indian women, how they survived, and how their lives had been different from modern day women. While in high school Cat won several scholarships to the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, taking classes during the summers. Cat gained much of her art education there, but her life's dream of becoming an artist was not thought highly of by her father. She is basically self-taught in the field of portraiture. As an adult, Cat went on to specialize in the rendering of the American Indian woman, intending to express the feminine mystique that many American Indian women have in their expressions. "Being a romantic, I tend to paint the American Indian woman in a somewhat spiritual or legendary setting. It is my intention to portray the American Indian woman so that her spirit, beauty and strength are the subject." Cat works in several mediums including pastels combined with watercolor. She also works in acrylics, painting on canvas. She uses acrylic paints with an oil method, and because of that her acrylic paintings have often been mistaken to be oils. Each Corcilius original acrylic begins with photography sessions with a model, incorporation of American Indian regalia, Southwestern landscapes and skyscapes. The painting begins with an extensive underpainting, followed by glazing to convey a feeling of mystic life. The goal is to depict a subject that seems as though she could literally walk off of the canvas. Cat's work can be seen on greeting cards published by the Leanin' Tree Greeting Card Company, and several pieces have been chosen by collector plate companies for publication on collector plates. If there ever was an artist who inspired a fellow artist, it was Charles M. Russell who had a profound influence on Olaf Carl Seltzer (1877-1957). The cowboy artist helped bring out the best in his younger, Great Falls, Montana friend. While Russell was gregarious and enjoyed a crowd, Seltzer was quiet and somewhat withdrawn. They both saw the same truth, their love for Montana and the "West That Has Passed." Born on August 25, 1877 in Copenhagen, Denmark to German immigrant parents, Olaf was abandoned in infancy by his father. He found solace in drawing, which led to acceptance at the Tekniske Selskabe Institute, known to develop artisans. Yet the young artist dreamed of the American West of Buffalo Bill Cody. He and his mother Julie sailed to America on June 21, 1892 to join his sister Laura and her husband in Giant Springs, a short jaunt from Great Falls, Montana. His first job was a ranch hand for a local outfit, but soon he realized the wages were better working for the Great Northern Railway. In October 1893 he was employed as an apprentice machinist for the railway in Great Falls. A steady income allowed him to marry Mabel L. Cleland, and they eventually had two sons, Carl and Walter. Other jobs such as locomotive repairman found him riding trains throughout the northern Great Plains, sketching in his spare time. His big break came from Russell patron Dr. Phillip Cole who by 1925 was one of the most important collectors of Western American art in the country. Cole was born in 1883 in Illinois but raised in Montana. Cole had met Seltzer on one of his trips to Montana, and for a year starting in 1926 Seltzer moved to New York to work on art commissions for him. Many more would follow. In 1928 he purchased a home on East Central Avenue and completed for Cole a series of watercolors that would be called the "Western Characters. In 1933 Cole had yet another project for Olaf. He was to paint the history of Montana in a series of oils, measuring no greater than six inches. He and Cole worked together on the commentary for each piece. The last of the oils was delivered to Cole in the autumn of 1935. The next year Cole photocopied the miniatures and assembled them into an impressive suede-covered volume he titled Montana in Miniature. At least four copies were produced. But Cole wouldn’t enjoy his collection long. On June 29, 1941 he died of a stroke at age fifty-seven. Several years later, Oklahoma oilman Thomas Gilcrease purchased for $400,000 much of Cole’s collection that included 560 paintings, sixty-two bronzes, and historical material. Half of the paintings were executed by Seltzer. They eventually found a home in 1949 when the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Seltzer died in a Great Falls convalescent home on December 16, 1957. He once said, "If there is anything of lasting value in my art, it will survive. If not, it will perish. He would be happy to know that him and his art—2,500 oil and watercolor paintings—were not forgotten. In 1960 the Montana Historical Society had a major retrospective of Seltzer’s paintings. Six years later art dealer Dr. Van Kirke Nelson in Kalispell, Montana and Cato K. Butler from Helena published Montana in Miniature, after finding one of Cole’s copies by the same name. In June 1979 the Gilcrease Museum had the largest one-man exhibit of Seltzer’s to date. Many exhibitions followed, including one at the C.M. Russell Museum in 2019. Besides his art, Olaf would be proud of his grandson, Steve Seltzer, who lives in Great Falls and is a noted and prolific artist.
Olaf Carl Wieghorst Letter and Envelope w/ Drawing

Born in Viborg, Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst was a child acrobatic performer from the age of nine when he began appearances at Tivoli Theater in Copenhagen and later toured Europe. He also learned horseback riding working on a stock farm, and horses became a major focus of his admiration and later his painting. In 1918, he arrived in the United States, having worked as a cabin boy on a steamer. He served in the 5th U.S. Cavalry on the Mexican border in the days of Pancho Villa. He later recalled a favorite horse from that period and said that riding through El Paso in 1921, the horse fell on his ankle and broke it. The outfit was heading to Douglas, Arizona, and not wanting to be left behind with his injury, he stayed on the horse which carried him all the way through the New Mexico desert on one of the hottest days of the year. The horse died during the night, having expended all his energy on saving Wieghorst. He later wrote that when the Cavalry discarded the use of horses, "they took the soul out of that great branch of the service" ("Widening Horizons"). He wandered extensively through the West sometimes on horseback, finding work in Arizona and New Mexico as a cowboy. Then he went to New York and served as a mounted policeman until 1944, spending most of his time on a horse named Rhombo patrolling the Central Park bridle paths and saving many people injury from runaway horses. He began painting in his spare time, and he was successful enough that his work was represented by the Grand Central Art Galleries of the Biltmore Hotel. In 1944, he settled in El Cajon, California. His paintings include cowboys, horses, and Indians in landscape, but there is little if any collectible art of his done during his early days in the West. His primary output came after his return to California when he began painting cowboys and horses extensively. He did numerous horse portraits, spending time on ranches studying their unique personalities. He painted celebrity horses including Roy Rogers' Trigger, Gene Autry's Champion and Tom Morgan's stallion. He was a large, powerful, handsome, and very personable man.

They both saw the same truth, their love for Montana and the "West That Has Passed." He found solace in drawing, which led to acceptance at the Tekniske Selskabe Institute, known to develop artisans. Yet the young artist dreamed of the American West of Buffalo Bill Cody. He and his mother Julie sailed to America on June 21, 1892 to join his sister Laura and her husband in Giant Springs, a short jaunt from Great Falls, Montana. His first job was a ranch hand for a local outfit, but soon he realized the wages were better working for the Great Northern Railway. In October 1893 he was employed as an apprentice machinist for the railway in Great Falls. A steady income allowed him to marry Mabel L. Cleland, and they eventually had two sons, Carl and Walter. Other jobs such as locomotive repairman found him riding trains throughout the northern Great Plains, sketching in his spare time. His big break came from Russell patron Dr. Phillip Cole who by 1925 was one of the most important collectors of Western American art in the country. Cole was born in 1883 in Illinois but raised in Montana. Cole had met Seltzer on one of his trips to Montana, and for a year starting in 1926 Seltzer moved to New York to work on art commissions for him. Many more would follow. Pen and Ink. 13 3/8" by 15 3/8" framed. Provenance: Ex CM Russell Art Museum on loan by Jack Mahood Great Falls Montana. Born in Viborg, Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst was a child acrobatic performer from the age of nine when he began appearances at Tivoli Theater in Copenhagen and later toured Europe. He also learned horseback riding working on a stock farm, and horses became a major focus of his admiration and later his painting. In 1918, he arrived in the United States, having worked as a cabin boy on a steamer. He served in the 5th U.S. Cavalry on the Mexican border in the days of Pancho Villa. He later recalled a favorite horse from that period and said that riding through El Paso in 1921, the horse fell on his ankle and broke it. The outfit was heading to Douglas, Arizona, and not wanting to be left behind with his injury, he stayed on the horse which carried him all the way through the New Mexico desert on one of the hottest days of the year. The horse died during the night, having expended all his energy on saving Wieghorst. He later wrote that when the Cavalry discarded the use of horses, "they took the soul out of that great branch of the service" ("Widening Horizons"). He wandered extensively through the West sometimes on horseback, finding work in Arizona and New Mexico as a cowboy. Then he went to New York and served as a mounted policeman until 1944, spending most of his time on a horse named Rhombo patrolling the Central Park bridle paths and saving many people injury from runaway horses. He began painting in his spare time, and he was successful enough that his work was represented by the Grand Central Art Galleries of the Biltmore Hotel. In 1944, he settled in El Cajon, California. His paintings include cowboys, horses, and Indians in landscape, but there is little if any collectible art of his done during his early days in the West. His primary output came after his return to California when he began painting cowboys and horses extensively. He did numerous horse portraits, spending time on ranches studying their unique personalities. He painted celebrity horses including Roy Rogers' Trigger, Gene Autry's Champion and Tom Morgan's stallion. He was a large, powerful, handsome, and very personable man.

Morgan was born in 1929 and lived in the Stansfield Lake area of the Helena Valley. "I've always fooled around with painting or some art form," Morgan says. When Bob was only 13 years old he got a job at Fligelman's Department Store in Helena in the advertising/display department. It was at Fligelman's that Morgan received his first instruction in design, color and lettering. In high school, Morgan continued to refine his talents with his natural aptitude, a keen eye to what he viewed and the influence of his commercial art teacher, Freddy Robinson. In 1952, Morgan was hired to design exhibits at the Montana Historical Society. With nothing more than a high school education and a stint in the Montana National Guard, Bob spent 15 years, off and on, as curator of the Montana Historical Society where he designed exhibits and was in charge of art collections and all matters pertaining to the Society's art functions. In the mid 1970's, Bob left the Historical Society to pursue a career in art. Today, Bob and his wife of 54 years, Genevieve, maintain a home/studio near historic downtown Helena. He remains active in the Northwest Rendezvous Group, which he is a founding member of, and annually participates in the C.M. Russell Auction.

Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, Ace Powell became a painter of western action scenes, wild animals, and Indian figures in realistic style and in the tradition of Charles Russell. Powell's trademark signature on his paintings is the ace of diamonds, which also became his nickname. He was prolific, creating between 12,000 and 15,000 paintings and sculptures. He considered oil to be his best medium although he loved sculpting in terra cotta, stone, and wood. He also was skilled at etching. His life has involved many changes of location and personal circumstance, much of it due to his alcoholism, which he eventually overcame. Eventually he settled in Kalispell. He moved to Montana at age one month. His mother was a schoolteacher, and his father was a cowboy foreman on the Ben Steven's horse ranch, then a homesteader, and eventually a worker for the Glacier National Park Service. Charlie Russell' s summer home was near the Powell home, and the Russells were family friends and encouraged Asa, nicknamed "Ace" in his artistic talent. He loved the Blackfeet Indians so much his father sent him to school on their reservation, and these people became one of his most frequent subjects. He also worked on the Bar X Six Ranch where he was a saddle-horse guide for many visiting successful western artists. He built a studio in Choteau, Montana and from there worked as a wood animal sculptor and also did book illustrations. After his first wife died when he was 29, he was briefly in the Army, worked in a defense plant, and was in the plastic figurine business in Yakima, Washington, but his partner ran off with his second wife, obviously terminating their business arrangement. He returned to Glacier Park for six years with his young son and then at age 40 enrolled in the University of Montana on the G.I. Bill. But he disliked the abstract art being promoted, so he quit and took the Famous Artists correspondence course, which really helped him down the path that established his art career. In 1952, he married artist Nancy McLaughlin, and in Hungry Horse, Montana they successfully operated a gallery, but it burned to the ground in 1964. They divorced, and in 1965, he married Thelma Conner.

Provenance: From a Large Private Utah Collection John Henri Moser was born to John Moser and Elizabeth Flueman on September 13, 1876, in Wabern, Switzerland. Of seven children in the family, John Henri was the fifth. At an early age he dropped the name John and went by the name Henri. In 1881, his family moved to Bern, Switzerland, where his father pursued stone cutting as a career and where Henri first attended school. His early love of painting and drawing became evident as he was constantly chastised for sketching in class. One teacher even beat his hands until blistered for such behavior in her class. However, even this experience could not sway him from his love of art. Some years later, the Moser family became converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1888, the family emigrated to America and crossed the plains in a covered wagon. They settled first in Payson, Utah, and later moved to Logan, Utah. It was in Logan that Moser began to work for the Diem family on their farm. A short while later, he began working in a printing shop in Enterprise, Utah: a job that was to last for the next ten years. While working at the printing shop, Moser decided to further his formal education. He went to work in the Gill Edge Mine in Montana to earn money for school. After saving the required funds, he returned to Logan and enrolled in the Utah State Agriculture College (USAC). He initially registered in the School of Engineering, but after some persuasion from Professor Stoddare, Henri changed his studies to art. On September 13, 1905, Henri married Aldina Wurden and later had six sons and daughters with her. They continued to live in Logan where Henri pursued his studies along with Alma B. Wright at Brigham Young College. In 1910, Dr. John A. Widstoe, President of Utah State Agriculture College, granted Henri a loan that allowed Henri to travel to Paris, France. In Paris, Henri enrolled at Colarossi Delecluse Academy and studied with Marvel Berenaur. He continued his studies at Carri and Miller. During this time, Henri became acquainted with Pablo Picasso. Henri later said of Picasso, "I know him well, he painted beautiful things then. Today he paints to advertise himself and laughs at the credulous public. He has wonderful talent and ability." In 1911, Moser returned to the United States to teach at the USAC. He later taught at the Agricultural College in Ceder City before moving to Idaho to homestead land in Malad. He ranched and painted there for the next eight years. Henri Moser proved his talent and ability with each of his creations. He received numerous awards and exhibited throughout the country.

Oil on Canvas Board. Subject is Monument Valley on the Arizona/Utah border in the Navajo Nation. 8" by 10" unframed. 10" by 12" framed. In the foreground it has a Navajo Indian Riding a horse, this figure is small and hard to make out. Condition report: Blacklight reveals three very small areas of touch up in the bottom right corner as shown. Painting appears to have some soiling and may benefit from a cleaning. Born in Marion, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, Gerard Delano, with a strong New England heritage, became a well-known illustrator and fine-art painter of western scenes, particularly Navajo Indians in landscape. He was the son of a sea captain and named for Gerard Curtis, the man who owned the ship that his father commanded. He began his art studies in New Bedford and as a youth sold illustrations to Life Magazine. His first training was at the Swaine Free School of Design near Marion, and in 1910, he enrolled at the Art Students League in New York City, becoming the pupil of George Bridgman, Frank Vincent DuMond, and Edward Dufner. He also worked as a textile designer. At the Grand Central School of Art, Gerard Delano studied with illustrators Dean Cornwell, Harvey Dunn and N.C. Wyeth. He became a successful commercial artist and illustrator, working in New York City until 1919 when he first came West and worked on a Colorado Ranch. In 1920, Gerard Delano homesteaded at Cataract Creek in Summit County, Colorado, and built his own dirt-roof studio. In 1933, he settled there permanently, but found the life hard because of the isolation, lack of art sales from being out of contact with his eastern market, and extreme winters in the high altitude. From there he took a trip into Navaho country, where the subject matter set the course of his career. He was fascinated by the colorful clothing of the Indians against the spectacular canyons of Arizona, and he painted scenes of Indians herding sheep and goats, emphasizing subtle coloration and mystical, contemplative mood. Needing to be near libraries for authentic research, he commuted to New York for illustration assignments. He later established a studio in Denver, having earned enough money from illustrating a weekly magazine feature called "The Story of the West". He spent his summers in Opdike, Illinois, his wife's home town.

New York City taught many lessons, and a longing for the wilderness was one. Entitled "Preying Time". 14" tall, 13 1/4" long. On a swivel base. Weighs 33lb 11oz. A retired dentist from Colville, Washington, Jerry McKellar began creating bronze sculptures in 1987 and in 1997 won the "Best Sculpture/People's Choice" and "Artists' Choice Awards" at the C.M. Russell Show. His primary focus is native Americans, although early in his sculpting career, he focused on wildlife. He has said that his background as a dentist was certainly important to his sculpture career as he worked with shaping instruments and in tedious detail. His studio is located on 22 acres of land near Colville, where he is surrounded by the wildlife that was the primary subject of his early sculpture. He was raised on Lake Chelan in north-central Washington and became very adept at skiing. In dental school at the University of Washington, he realized that he had skill with his hands because he could finish his lab work making gold crowns and other devices faster than most of his colleagues. In 1969, he graduated and served for two years as an Army dentist in Missouri. Borrowing some of his mother's equipment from an art class she was taking, McKellar began sketching and then working up detailed wildlife sketches on scratchboard. He also did oil painting. However, marriage and fatherhood diverted him from his art career, but in the mid-1980s, when his children were older, he pursued his sculpture interest. One of his first pieces was for the Ducks Unlimited competition. Successful, he and his wife went on the road selling his work at art shows. Much of his work is inspired by his travels that include Alaska, Greece, and Mexico.

Ron Jenkins Montana Watercolor Duck Painting

15 1/2" by 19 1/2" framed. Pintail Duck. Painted in 1980. Ron Jenkins was born on August 18, 1932 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and then was raised in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art throughout the academic year of 1954-1955, but increasing family responsibilities prompted him to drop his art education temporarily to go to work for a savings and loan association. It was a job he was to hold for ten years, but in the meantime he began a correspondence course in art that ran from 1958 to 1962. He works fast, and although he will tackle any subject, birds are his favorite; his work on them goes especially fast. In fact, he spent so little time, comparatively speaking, on the 1964 painting of canvasbacks that von the 1965-66 Federal Duck Stamp Competition that it gave him mildly embarassed pause; he had almost not submitted it at all. He has illustrated a number of stories for the Pennsylvania Game News and the Pennsylvania Angler. His work has also appeared in the National Geographic magazine and the Modern Game Breeding magazine. In 1980, he won the third annual Montana Bird Stamp Design contest with his Whistlers'or Barrows Goldenyes, which he produced in two medium which was that of a reproduction edition and a hand colored stone lithograph edition. In 1993, Ron was selected as the 1993 First of State for the Rhode Island Trout Conservation Stamp with his work of a brook trout during a Rhode Island caddis hatch.

Biography photo for Gary Shoop Living near Riverton, Wyoming in an old log homestead house for a studio, Gary Shoop has been a sculptor in bronze since the 1970s. His favorite subject is horses, but he also does other animals and sometimes includes people. Shoop began as a painter, but has been sculpting for 30 years when he met and worked for noted sculptor Harry Jackson. He worked with Jackson for nine years and this allowed him to make several working trips to Europe. There he was able to participate in the process of lost wax bronze casting and to study the art of the Old Masters. He works in many sizes from life-size to miniature.

Ted Long, North Platte artist and sculptor, created the larger than life bronze sculpture, "Defenders of Liberty," that is at the entrance to the 20th Century Veterans Memorial. Long died Tuesday at his home. Ted Long, North Platte artist and sculptor, died Tuesday at his ranch home. Nationally recognized as one of the foremost western artists in the country, Long was best known at home in North Platte for the sculptures he created over the past few years for the 20th Century Veterans Memorial. Long had often mused that an artist is never as quickly recognized in his hometown as he is across the nation and around the world. Yet the sculptures he created for the Veterans Memorial were, he said, the ones that evoked the most emotion within him and elicited the greatest feeling from him. "We get to know each other very personally," he had said of the figures as he worked in his ranch home studio to bring each of them to their life-like and larger-than-life status. Long said that Defenders of Liberty, the sculpture that stands at the entrance to the Veterans Memorial, had been a sculpture he carried "in his head" for decades. He had often wondered when it would cease to be an image in his mind and become a reality in bronze. It became reality when he was commissioned to do the memorial entrance piece in 2003. The three battle-weary soldiers are from the Korean War period, the same war in which Long, an Army veteran, had fought. Long's work that is currently in place at the 20th Century Veterans memorial, in addition to the Defenders of Liberty, are those of a Word War II pilot and a Vietnam era infantryman. Two larger than life eagles in flight are atop the memorial's arched entrance along with a dove bearing an olive branch. Even as Long's cancer, that was diagnosed only a few months ago, progressed, Long remained at his work as an artist. His primary focus had been on sculptures for the Veterans Memorial. Within days after undergoing surgery for the sarcoma in his leg, and as he underwent chemotherapy, Long returned to his studio to complete the sculpture that honors those who served the military in medical capacities. The piece, of a female figure rendering medical aid in combat, is done and has been cast in larger- than-life size bronze. The figure of a United States Marine, standing at parade rest, has been cast in its one-eighth-size bronze. The armature for the larger-then-life figure of the Marine is done. Long helped found the Nebraskaland Days Governor's Western and Wildlife Art Show. During the first years of the show, Long persuaded his professional artist friends from across the country to come to North Platte and show their work in a million-dollar exhibit. It was Long's urging and support that brought many of the artists who currently exhibit their work during Nebraskaland Days to the show. Long's sculpture of Ponca Chief Standing Bear is in the rotunda of the Nebraska capitol building. Long became the first Nebraska artist to have a piece in the rotunda and Standing Bear became the first American Indian to be inducted into the state's Hall of Fame. Ted Long's art brought him national acclaim and his work is in corporate and private collections, galleries and museums across the nation. But as much as being an artist had brought Long fame and accolades, he remained ever at-heart a rancher and a steward of the land. Long lived and worked the ranch northwest of North Platte where he was born and where he and his wife, Margaret, raised their four children: Michaelene, Tom, Patrick and Cathy. When President Ronald Reagan visited the Long ranch in 1987, and when he shook hands with Long and Long's father, Charles, Reagan said he was pleased to shake hands with "real working cowboys." Long believed that his connection to the land, his respect for its seasons and the recognition of both its beauty and its demands, inspired his work. That bond with the land, he felt, gave his paintings their life and their vitality. An artist does not live forever. Ted Long died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at the age of 75.

Long died Tuesday at his home. Ted Long, North Platte artist and sculptor, died Tuesday at his ranch home. Nationally recognized as one of the foremost western artists in the country, Long was best known at home in North Platte for the sculptures he created over the past few years for the 20th Century Veterans Memorial. Long had often mused that an artist is never as quickly recognized in his hometown as he is across the nation and around the world. Yet the sculptures he created for the Veterans Memorial were, he said, the ones that evoked the most emotion within him and elicited the greatest feeling from him. "We get to know each other very personally," he had said of the figures as he worked in his ranch home studio to bring each of them to their life-like and larger-than-life status. Long said that Defenders of Liberty, the sculpture that stands at the entrance to the Veterans Memorial, had been a sculpture he carried "in his head" for decades. He had often wondered when it would cease to be an image in his mind and become a reality in bronze. It became reality when he was commissioned to do the memorial entrance piece in 2003. The three battle-weary soldiers are from the Korean War period, the same war in which Long, an Army veteran, had fought. Long's work that is currently in place at the 20th Century Veterans memorial, in addition to the Defenders of Liberty, are those of a Word War II pilot and a Vietnam era infantryman. Two larger than life eagles in flight are atop the memorial's arched entrance along with a dove bearing an olive branch. Even as Long's cancer, that was diagnosed only a few months ago, progressed, Long remained at his work as an artist. His primary focus had been on sculptures for the Veterans Memorial. Within days after undergoing surgery for the sarcoma in his leg, and as he underwent chemotherapy, Long returned to his studio to complete the sculpture that honors those who served the military in medical capacities. The piece, of a female figure rendering medical aid in combat, is done and has been cast in larger- than-life size bronze. Nice pair of ledger drawings. 9" by 11". Dave Powell is a native son of Montana, in a world of change and transition; few can say they have roots in a single geography that go back four generations. Dave's pedigree in art is just about as deep. He is the son of artists Ace Powell and Nancy McLaughlin Powell. That heritage leads back to the likes of Charlie Russell and Joe De Young, both famous for their abilities to "tell the story" through their art. His father, Ace Powell, was a prolific Western artist whose first childhood paint-box set was a gift from Charlie and Nancy Russell. Dave became a serious student of art in his mid-teens, and has been a professional artist most of his adult life. Over the years he has worked with Bob Scriver, Ned Jacob and Robert Lougheed. Dave will be the first to give thanks and credit to *CAA founder Joe Beeler for his longstanding friendship and guidance over many years. Because of his vast knowledge of the dress and habits of Western Indians, pioneers and cowboys, Dave is often called upon to provide costumes and props, and to give technical advice about authenticity for films and television. Productions he has worked on include Good Old Boys, Silverado, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams and Lonesome Dove. His interests in historic reenactments and rides have taken him all across the West, and these travels have afforded Dave the opportunity for inspiration. While his film work utilizes his experience and observation, his sculptures, paintings and illustrations are born of his imagination. Dave and his family now reside in central Montana, just a short drive from Charlie Russell's home in Great Falls. There he is constantly inspired by the very buttes and prairies that Russell himself loved and painted.

Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey is the daughter of a retired career officer, and is fortunate enough to be exposed to exotic cultures throughout her childhood. In whatever country her father was stationed, Nancy immersed herself in the culture, and her affection for the arts later led her to study two years in Paris and another five years in Britain. Nancy loves color, texture and pattern. She began her painting career 35 years ago and worked predominately in watercolor. Through her pursuit for texture and passion for color, Nancy discovered the spontaneity and brilliance she could create through painting on silk, a Chinese technique that has been practiced for thousands of years. And, although silk painting is now her medium of choice, she continues to explore a variety of subjects in watercolor, pastel, oil and experimental media. Often, we see a mixture of media in her silk compositions. Through this overlaying of various media she creates buoyant color and texture with her combination of transparent pigment and the shimmer of silk. A colorist with a strong sense of design, Nancy´s work always evokes a response, whether she is creating one of her signature western figure pieces, a breathtaking landscape, a quiet corner of Venice, or a vibrant floral. Nancy moved to Montana 22 years ago and settled near Bigfork on Fox Creek Slough near Flathead Lake where Montana´s expansiveness serves as the primary inspiration for her work. She also enjoys traveling to the Southwest and abroad to paint on-site plein air studies. Represented in galleries in Jackson, Cody, Carmel, and Bigfork, her work is included in invitational art shows across the West, like the Annual C. M. Russell Show and Auction, The Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale, National Cowgirl Museum "Heart of The West" Invitational, the Cowgirl Up! Show at The Desert Caballeros Museum.She is a Signature Member on the Montana Watercolor Society. Her work is exhibited in many private and corporate collections across the country and in Europe.
