One-piece bisque head and torso depicting a smiling-face young child, her head tilted coquettishly to the side, sculpted short brown curly hair with orange hair ribbon, brown side-painted eyes, closed mouth, loop-jointed bisque arms and legs, painted brown shoes and white socks, antique dress. Excellent condition, one stringing loop repaired. Gebruder Heubach, circa 1917.

Marks: Jumeau Medaille'Or Paris (body). EmileJumeau, circa 1878. Rare signed poupee with new facial model introduced at the 1878 Universal Exposition in Paris. Excellent condition.

When wound, the ballerina should twirl around on toe, move arms up and down to display garland of flowers, and the platform designed to glide around in an auxiliary movement. French, circa 1880. Excellent condition of bisque and presentation, mechanism needs adjustment.

Rare Pair of American Wax Black Character Dolls by Mary McEwan 800/1200

17" (43 cm.) 17" woman and 11" child, each have brown complexioned wax head with highly characterized features, brown glass googly-like eyes, fleecy black hair, padded armature bodies, the mother with wax over-sized hands, the child with composition hands, nicely costumed. Made by Mary McEwan, born 1866, and co-owner of the McEwan Wax Works in Milwaukee until 1910 when she and her husband moved to Seattle. She maintained her interest in wax, creating a parade of wax doll heads with highly characterized features, although it is believed that not more than 300/400 of the black dolls were sculpted and most were never sold until after her death and the estate closing of the family home. The dolls are highly distinctive, and quite rare.

Unmarked. The doll closely resembles the Bye-lo Baby (although with variant body), of which a very small number were made by wax by Grace Storey Putnam during the 1920s.
