The tab that is not RZM stamped is slightly larger in width as is typical with this maker. Excellent detail throughout. The original gold tone finish is still bright exhibiting the original factory lacquer which hasn't darkened with age quite as much as most examples found, most likely due to being stored in the original "leatherette" covered thick cardboard storage case. All 31 rectangular chain links are present and exhibit moderate age patina darkening. The reverse green felt backing is in excellent condition not exhibiting much wear at all. This is a stellar example of a German mid-WWII style Sturmabteilung (SA) Political Leader's Gorget. These would be worn at meetings and even in the field, to make it clear who was of a higher rank. Rare Double Sided Nazi Police Unit/Battalion Pennant/Wimpel Lot #57 (Sale Order 62 of 264) From an advanced WW2 Nazi Police Collector's estate. This example was acquired many years ago from a WW2 vet the collector stated. The collector is now in his 90's stated this pennant was one of his prized Nazi Police items in his collection! Double sided example has reinforcement stitching at the tip, along the straight edge and has horizontal reinforcement stitching in the corners where the pole ties are. The pole ties exhibit wear and appear to have been cut from the pole. Bevo embroidered Police eagle insignia on each side. The unit/district numbers are bar stitched on each side which was done in the early 3rd Reich period before chain stitching became more common. No reaction to UV lighting. The red base material is a fine wool construction. The swastika is printed onto a fine white wool circle which is stitched to the red wool base on each side. We have had several advanced collector's look at this and response was nearly 100% positive with the main issue being that Nazi Police Unit designated pennants are extremely rare and is almost impossible to compare to other examples. The construction is certainly indicative of 3rd Reich era. In our opinion and having examined in hand, we believe it to be an original period example but please bid based on your own knowledge, expertise and/or research!

Footnote: In 1938, the Civil Aeronautics Act transferred federal responsibilities for non-military aviation from the Bureau of Air Commerce to a new, independent agency, the Civil Aeronautics Authority. The legislation also gave the authority the power to regulate airline fares and to determine the routes that air carriers would serve. In 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt split the authority into two agencies, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) and the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB). The CAA was responsible for air traffic control, safety programs, and airway development. The CAB was entrusted with safety rule-making, accident investigation, and economic regulation of the airlines. Although both organizations were part of the Department of Commerce, the CAB functioned independently. After the Second World War began in Europe, the CAA launched the Civilian Pilot Training Program, to provide the nation with more aviators. On the eve of America's entry into the conflict, the agency began to take over operation of airport control towers, a role that eventually became permanent. During the war, the CAA also greatly enlarged its en route air traffic control system. In 1944, the United States hosted a conference in Chicago that led to the establishment of the International Civil Aviation Organization and set the framework for future aviation diplomacy. In the post-war era, the application of radar to air traffic control helped controllers to keep abreast of the postwar boom in air transportation. In 1946, Congress gave the CAA the task of administering a federal-aid airport program aimed exclusively at promoting development of the nation's civil airports.
