English Wooden "Post Office" Dollhouse with Exceptional Exterior Details 5000/7500 Lot #301 (Sale Order 2 of 253) 25" (64 cm.) h. x 18"d. x 20"w. The wooden two story building designed to appear as though a stone house with shaped stone work around the windows, has an arched front door and two side doors, each with tiny bone door knob, the front door under an arched frame, and with windows having wooden panes, with steepled roof centered by a pair of large chimneys, two front steps, and two large interior rooms with wooden floors. The words "Post Office" are lettered across the front of the house. Excellent condition, original finish, on swivel base allowing easy access to either front or back of house. English, mid-1800s.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 192. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1892, the model was registered by the firm in that year; it is unknown who actually produced the bisque heads for Kammer and Reinhardt during this era, but its close resemblance to Kestner suggests that firm as a possible source. Value Points: hard-to-find model with beautifully-painted brows and lips, original early body, antique velvet costume.

Condition: restoration of shoulderplate, back of head, and left hand. Marks: Bru Jne 9 (head) Bru Jne No. 9 (shoulders) (partial Bru label on torso). Comments: Bebe Teteur, Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1880. The doll is shown in the book, Through the Nursery Window by Lila Rait, and its provenance is told. The original owner, Lorna, was the daughter of a prosperous Scottish family who had come to Australia about 1850; it is believed that the doll was presented as an exhibition model at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880 and was acquired by the family from there. Value Points: extremely rare size of the Bebe Teteur, indicating its probable use as an exhibition doll, with great presentation, beautiful facial complexion, sturdy original body and costume. A copy of the book is included.

English Wooden Georgian Period Dollhouse with Provenance 5000/7500 Lot #338 (Sale Order 39 of 253) 40" (102 cm.) h. x 30"w. x 16"d. The dark wood two store dollhouse with natural finish has double gable rooflines, each roof with double chimney, full-width front porch with chain-attached short posts, arched paneled front door, and painted-pane front windows. The entire front opens to reveal four large interior rooms, each with original wood or paper floor, papered walls, and built-in fireplaces, and the kitchen fireplace is fitted with a rare roasting device (see detail photos). The house is in excellent condition. English, Georgian era, circa 1800. Included with the house is a 1951 note regarding its history, "The piece was on exhibition at the English Fair at Wembley and viewed by Queen Mary who is a collector of doll furniture. Alan Crosland, noted Movie Director, now deceased, bought it in competition with Queen Mary's Commissionaire".

Each is all wooden with one-piece head and torso, dowel-jointed wooden limbs, painted black hair and facial features, antique costume. Along with early wooden hand-carved blanket chest with removable lid; and miniature wooden chest with faux-wood grain finish and wooden straps, and with mysterious symbols on the hinged lid; and three-drawer chest of red-washed pine with mahogany drawer fronts, brass cast faux keyholes and knob, impressed "J. French Musical Automaton "Little Girl Training Her Pup" by Renou 5500/7500 Lot #339 (Sale Order 41 of 253) 21" (53 cm.) Arranged upon a velvet covered base is a bisque head girl with glass eyes, brunette mohair wig, original costume, holding a training stick in one hand and a biscuit in the other. Facing her, posed upon a chair, is a costumed glass-eyed paper mache dog, resting on its back haunches, with front paws extended in a begging manner. When wound, music plays, the girl turns her head side to side and extends training stick as though commanding the pup, and then tempts with the biscuit she extends in her left hand. Meanwhile the pup leans back and forth, his front paws finally leaning on his chair tray while he looks beseechingly at the biscuit, and all the while vigorously wagging his tail. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1902 2/0 Comments: Renou, Paris, circa 1895. Value Points: rare automaton functions well and presents a delightful amusing scene, in fine original condition.

German Mechanical Black Man as Peddler in Original Costume 1600/2100 Lot #340 (Sale Order 42 of 253) 24" (61 cm.) Standing upon a wooden base is a paper mache head man with ebony black complexion, his head attached in loose nodding manner, with black glass eyes, painted features, open hinged mouth with two rows of teeth, wide smiling expression, paper mache body, wire upper arms, paper mache hands with pointing finger on right hand. When wound, he nods his head and hinges open and close his mouth as though hawking his wares which are presumably held in the suitcases at his feet. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1890, designed as a store promotional item to draw the public's focus to whatever product was being shown in the store window. Value Points: fine all-original condition including wonderful costume including fancy shoes and plaid slacks with matching jacket lining.

Man with rich brown complexioned paper mache head which is loosely attached to a paper mache body is posed seated with crossed legs, and with hinged arms that are held outward with open palms. The man has brown flirty eyes, closed mouth, highly-characterized features, black fleecy hair, and is wearing original costume of exotic snake charmer including jewelry; at his side is a woven basket which contains a rubber snake. When wound, his head leans side to side, his eyes flirt, and his left arm moves up and down as though charming the snake which he holds. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, early 1900s, from a series of store promotional mechanical figures, designed to be placed in store windows to attract attention of passers-by. Bisque socket head, very deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, rose blushed eye shadow, brushstroked and multi-feathered brows, shaded nostrils, closed mouth, shaded and outlined lips, separately-modeled pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Brevete SGDG Jumeau 12 (incised, and artist checkmarks) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, the depose model was introduced in 1885/86 and were his first systems for sleeping eyes; the system was unsuccessful and those heads which had been designed for this use (with a small drilled hole at the back of the head for placement of the turning knob) were simply presented with the in-demand classic paperweight eyes. The only signals that denote the original are the unusual Jumeau incised marking and the factory-filled small hole at the back of head. Few examples of the luxury model exist, and especially in this large and expensive size. Value Points: rare model has exemplary bisque and painting, original body and body finish, lovely antique dress, bonnet, undergarments, Jumeau socks and Jumeau signed shoes.

French Musical Automaton "The Professor and the Dunce" by Roullet et Decamps 6500/8500 Lot #376 (Sale Order 78 of 253) 19" (48 cm.) Posed on a silk brocade-covered wooden platform is a bisque-head Professor standing behind his teacher's desk, holding a book and a teaching rod, while alongside is the classroom student "dunce" in kneeling position and with accessory ears. When wound, the professor turns side-to-side, nodding his head and waving his stick as he turns to the student, then inclining his head to read from his book. The Dunce lifts his book up and down, pretending to study, while his ears move up and down and back and forth as though mocking the professor. Two tunes are played. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1895. Value Points: the amusing vignette is well-preserved, including school room details such as teacher's bell and blackboard.
