Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 2. Comments: French, circa 1865. American "Bailey's Midget Piano" with Eleven Dancing Dolls 1600/2100

17" (43 cm.) w. x 23"h. The wooden piano with ebony finish and elephant-shaped cast iron legs is surmounted by a display cabinet with mirrored back that contains eleven miniature porcelain-head dolls. When the keys are played, a mechanism connects with the dolls which dance about. The piano is labeled "Gem" in gilt lettering. Excellent condition, mechanism functions well. The dancing dolls piano was patented on June 21, 1881, marketed as "Bailey's Midget Piano"; it was made in several sizes, this appearing to be the most deluxe of the models. It is very rare to find.

26" (66 cm.) h. x 17"l. x 12"d. A two-story wooden dollhouse has original lithographed brick paper on the second floor and stone-work paper on the first; the remainder of the house, including roof and all architectural details, have original painted finish including stonework details and outlines of window frames, balcony and porch. There is a second floor balcony with opening door, front porch with columns and arched window above the porch roof, two full-length bay windows on the first floor, and two dormer windows at the attic roof. The house rests on original base. There are two large rooms inside and the house has original wall and floor papers, and original curtains (frail on the second floor). A unique feature of the house are the painted cardboard curtains of the attic dormer windows. Excellent original condition with some minor rubs. Germany, Moritz Gottschalk, model #9, circa 1890. A very rare dollhouse, it was featured in The Genius of Moritz Gottschalk by Evelyn Ackerman, page 27.

Comments: Gebruder Heubach, circa 1927, the model was commissioned for George Borgfeldt, the doll design was by the German-born American artist Hy Mayer who copyrighted the doll in 1927 according to information in the Borgfeldt catalog of that year. Henry "Hy" Mayer was a cartoonist for Universal Studios from 1913-1920, and designed the "Such is Life" film series from 1920-1926. The constructed room box whose sides are covered with early lithographs depicting the story of Cinderella is furnished with an outstanding collection of Viennese bronze miniature pieces, each with superb hand-painted and enameled finish depicting 18th century romantic scenes, including grand piano, harp, lady's desk with high paneled back, three-part folding screen, table with drawer, four side chairs, two settees, lady's secretary desk, along with 21 hand-painted porcelains that decorate the walls, and two bisque dollhouse dolls, presumably Cinderella and the Prince. The miniature furnishings are in near mint condition, Vienna, late 1800s. The room was constructed at a later date and for many years was displayed in the Doll Museum at Knotts Berry Farm in California.

37" (94 cm.) 37" (94 cm.) h. x 24"w. x 22"d. A wooden three-story house including attic, features a very high steeped roof and a small front garden enclosed by a carved fence. There are four bay windows at the front below two gables with arched windows, and unusual double windows at each side that provide access to the house interior. The front door is protected by an arched and pillared front porch. A pair of double chimneys flank the roof which is covered with thick hand-carved roof shingles; and the roof, eaves and window moldings are decorated with intricate detailing on elaborate gingerbread trim. Inside are four rooms, each with a fireplace (the living room fireplace hand-painted and framed by architectural alcoves). There are decorative plaster moldings on the ceilings of the dining and living rooms, and wooden baseboard moldings. The center stair-case has a detailed banister with turned spindles. Excellent condition. Circa 1885, probably English.
