TAINO STONE COHOBA STAND ANTHROPIC FIGURES Lot #2186 (Sale Order 184 of 472) Taino. Fantastic stone Cohoba Stand with duel Anthropomorphic figures supporting snuffing platform. Cohoba stands were usually made of wood (Lignum vitae) and are rarely seen this size. They were used to inhale the hallucinogen cohoba directly from the top of the head, or from vessels placed on the stand. A significantly important example of Taino craftsmanship. Duality was a primary cosmological view of similar but opposing concepts like night/day, man/woman sun/moon etc. An ornate band of symbolic water icons surround the platforms rim. Both faces are defined by embossed mouth and eye margins, a typical Taino design element. The two figures have hands on knees and stare out blankly into space, with mouths agape, a symbolic figuration for entropic transcendence, and a fitting design for a cohoba stand. Duck head ear spools brace the sides of the heads. The thighs are engraved with interfacing bird head symbols. Made from a bluish rhyolite, commonly seen in ceremonial goods from the Dominican Republic. Length 12 inch. Originally purchased from Pre-Columbian art dealer Robert Sonin in 1998 at the New York City Pier Antiques show. Currently Roberts Collection, author of “Taino Sculpture Art of the Gods” and “Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust”. Reserve 1500. Estimate 6,000-7000. The Taino people lived in the Greater Antilles, from Cuba to the Virgin Islands, as well as the Bahamas, occupying the islands from c800-1500AD. They brought the lithic talents of pan America to the islands forming a homogeny of artistic influences incorporating animal allies, natural phenomena, and shamanism. What is interesting is this creative impetus was centered on the ceremonial consumption of the hallucinogen cohoba. Literally all ritual art was considered living, imbued with spiritual beings who shared their wisdom during altered states of consciousness. The Taino aesthetic is a wonderful mix of environmental and spiritual elements. Using nothing more than Stone Age tools, native craftsmen carved local semiprecious stones creating magnificent mythical beings, ancestral representations, and shamanic transformations that is unmatched in pre-Columbian art. 0

CARRIBEAN CULTURE TAINO MALE AX WITH MOUNT Lot #2187 (Sale Order 185 of 472) PreColumbian. A Monumental male Figural Anthropic ax measuring 14.5 in length, 2.41 diameter and 6.02” in width. Taino ax forms follow a long tradition of Figural ceremonial axes dating back to the Olmec. Following the Taino’s preference for stone over other media, this colossal ax may be the biggest ax form known in the PreColumbian context. It probably represents a male fertility god as the phallus is erect and prominent. When inverted the eyes and crown of the head create a ghost’s face, and another incorporating the mouth and shoulder roundels . Hidden faces were a trademark of Taino carvers and can be found in most Taino sculptures. Made of serpentinite. Originally from the Dominican Republic. Comes with heavy duty metal museum mount. C 1000-1500 AD. Ex collection of Larry Roberts author of Taino Sculpture, Art of the Gods and Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust. 0
