USA/New York 1893 Naval Review medal Eglit-221 choice AU/UNC Lot #225 (Sale Order 229 of 244) The naval review in New York harbor was part of the 400th Anniversary celebration of the discovery of America by Columbus. It involved the ships of many nations and included replicas of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. This medal was struck for the occasion by the Quint company in Philadelphia in white metal (probably tin). It is 38mm in diameter and was holed at the top to be suspended from a ribbon. Obverse features a vignette of Columbus making landfall, reverse is a soldier and sailor in period uniforms with battleship and the (then fairly new) Statue of Liberty in the background.
