A vintage 1/8 scale Biosatellite model from NASA measuring 11" high on its stand and 7" diameter at the back. It is made of a hollow lightweight material and detaches from its stand. It comes complete in its original 9"x 13"x 15" wooden storage box - the molded foam inside has long since deteriorated to dust, but foam can be replaced. The model has a small piece loose and rattling around inside, but that does not affect its display. It also could use a proper cleaning. This lot also includes six reference booklets on the Biosatellite program including a design booklet and a Press Kit. Very uncommon. Estimated Value: $100 - $200

A 4"x 10" heavy plastic orbit indicator from Grumman with an orbit track slide on the front and two dials on the back for the North and South poles. Since this is from Grumman, this very well could be more likely from the Apollo era. This orbit slide was formerly in the personal collection of Original 7 Mercury astronaut Deke Slayton and comes with a 4"x 5½" Certificate of Authenticity card signed by Slayton's wife Bobbie attesting to the fact that it belonged to Slayton. An early Performance Flight Testing training manual from the USAF Experimental Flight Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB dated August 1953 with 232 pages of training materials. This training manual belonged to future Mercury 7 astronaut Deke Slayton, and in fact he has written his name in pencil on the top margin of the front cover "Capt. Slayton". Inside are also eight lined pages of pencil notes taken by Slayton during the course (6 sheets with 2 sheets written on both sides for a total of 8) with at least five of them for sure being in Slayton's hand and the other three very probably being written by Slayton as well. The manual itself is faded with age and in used extensively by Slayton, but still good shape. This lot comes with a certificate signed by Slayton's wife Bobbie attesting to the fact that this manual was indeed the personal property of Deke Slayton. Estimated Value: $400 - $500

In fact, on the title page, it specifies Capsule-13, which was Glenn's spacecraft. It consists of about 40-50 heavier than normal pages detailing rescue procedures for any emergency. There are 11 sections, but the 5 main sections range from T minus 120 seconds to T plus 10 seconds, which all the different scenarios within that time. Excellent condition and quite rare. Each piece must be separated from the main sheet, folded where instructed and fit together with other pieces by way of tabs and slots. This dates to the time of the Apollo 11 mission, and I remember putting together 5 or 6 of these when I was a kid (still have one). I have provided a back view of this item to better show what is missing - however, the two small missing pieces are not actually part of the LM model but in fact are in between pieces meant to be thrown away. The empty spot near the bottom seems to be reserved to display a matchbook showing the non-emblem side. This framed set comes complete in its original box and with all the paperwork. The first manual is a Validation of the Polarity Checker Preliminary Document dated 11-07-66 (49 pages), the next is Ascent Stage Fit Checks dated 6-17-66 (about 20 pages), the next is Spacecraft Handling and Transportation dated 11-15-66 (about 50 pages), the next is Ascent Stage Descent Stage Mating dated 11-15-66 (about 20 pages), the next is Receiving Inspection Checklist dated 11-15-66 (about 40 pages) and the last is again Validation of the Polarity Checker dated 12-1-66 and presumably the final version of this document (about 30 pages). An original 5"x 5" cylindrical plastic lunar material collection bag of the type actually used on the lunar surface by the astronauts. I have provided a photo showing an Apollo 12 astronaut on the lunar surface near the cylindrical case where these plastic bags were stored for easy access - the aluminum 'flags' can be seen sticking out the slot. This bag was used in training and has an aluminum rim to facilitate easy opening and closing, and are numbered for later determining when and where a sample was scooped. Most times these bags were fitted on the end of a long scoop so the astronaut wouldn't have to leave the rover to collect a sample. It contains 1000+ pages in 13 sections, and the sections are Introduction, Physical Data, Orbital Mechanics, Perturbations, Satellite Lifetimes, Maneuvers, Rendezvous, Orbital Departure, Satellite Re-entry, Waiting Orbit Criteria, Orbit Computations, Guidance and Control Requirements and Mission Requirements. Full of explanations, equations, calculations, tables, charts and graphs, and in excellent condition. Rare. Since there were no powerful computers or calculators in the 1960's, all calculations contained in the volumes were done by hand with a slide rule, and contained in these two volumes was all the information that made the space program a success. CSM To LM EVT Transfer Instruction Sticker

A metallic-like checklist sticker for Hatch Closing EVT (Extra-Vehicular Transfer) between the CSM and the LM. This sticker was normally placed near the CSM/LM hatch for ready reference for the astronauts. The sticker is about 2"x 5" in size. Unused and in excellent condition. Probably one of the very few left in existence. Estimated Value: $200 - $250

Lunar Module Docking Model From CSM Simulator

The actual Lunar Module ascent stage taken from the Command Module Simulator 2 at KSC after training was complete. It measures 5" tall and 8" at its widest point, and seems to be made of molded and then painted fiberglass. This was the actual Lunar Module model which was made to move around the camera in the simulator tunnel to show the attitude of the LM in relation to the CSM in response to the hand controller inputs from the Command Module Pilots. The model contains a docking port for practice in that maneuver, and several lights, including the main strobe light, that were wired up and in lit up in the simulator. The wires and most the bulbs still remain, and can be made to work again. The windows on the LM used to have sort sort of plexiglass glued onto the window recesses, but they have come off and have been lost, but can be easily restored. Of the sixteen small thrusters, only 15 remain. There were a total of three Command Module simulators in use at the time, CMS-1, CMS-2 and CMS-3. CMS-1 was in Houston and was used for system familiarization, while CMS-2 and CMS-3 were at KSC and were used for mission specific training, such as docking. This particular Lunar Module model was in the darkened CMS-2 tunnel, and was used to train the Apollo 9, Apollo 11 and Apollo 13 crews. That means that Dave Scott, Michael Collins and Ken Mattingly, along with their backups (Gordon, Anders and Swigert) all trained for rendezvous and docking using this model. CMS-2 also was used to train the Apollo 1 and Apollo 7 crews but without a need for this LM model of course. The other simulator, CMS-3, was used to train all the other Apollo crews. After training for the Apollo landing missions was complete, this model was taken from the CMS-2 simulator tunnel, and has been kept in storage ever since that time. Probably the only one of the three in existence that was saved. Estimated Value: $5000 - $6000

Lunar Module Hardware - Extending Clamp Light

To be clear from the start, this Lunar Module clamp extension light is not "like" the one shown above Armstrong's head, it IS the one above Armstrong's head. It was rescued from the Lunar Module Simulator (LMS) by the consignor after all Apollo LM mission training was completed, and a signed letter attesting to that fact comes with this lot. The entire unit weighs about 2 pounds with the capability of the long, coiled extension cable to be plugged into the LM panel for power. It could be clamped into place in the LM for fixed lighting at any angle or the light itself (white part) could be removed from the clamp base to be used as a flashlight to extend lighting into all the nooks and crannies inside the spacecraft. The coiled wire has separated over the years a few inches from the light, but that can easily be repaired to either working condition or for display. An interesting aside is that the clamp from a light similar to this one was used to help attach cue cards and repair the Apollo 17 lunar rover fender. This Lunar Module light may be the only one you will ever see for sale. Excellent condition except for the aforementioned break in the wire. Estimated Value: $5000 - $6000

The developed film in this particular canister was delivered to NASA on January 3, 1969, only a week after the mission. The canister is 3-1/2" diameter and 3" tall and the film roll fits snugly inside. A sheet lists all the photo numbers and provides captions for all the photos taken by the Apollo 8 crew during the flight with that camera. Apollo 9 Commander Jim McDivitt's Working Paper book dated 9 September 1968 entitled "Program Guidance Equations for Sundance Lunar Module Earth Orbital Program", consisting of several hundred pages (about 2" thick) of equations and computer programming all having to do with the Sundance program. Sundance was the name given to the computer program run on the Apollo 9 Lunar Module AGC, and was replaced for later flights. Thick 300+ pages filled with equations, techniques, and illustrations on orbital rendezvous for manned space flight. One look at this document reveals why Buzz Aldrin was known by his fellow astronauts as "Mr. Rendezvous." Explains in great detail the counter intuitive nature of space rendezvous with example analysis applied to the NASA Gemini rendezvous mission. Six years later Buzz Aldrin would execute the then controversial Lunar Orbit Rendezvous (LOR) maneuvers that made possible the success of Apollo 11. An original 8½"x 10½" Apollo 11 LM Data Card Book, along with four Apollo 11 Lunar Module cue cards, used by the crew of Apollo 11 in training. All the pages are dated anywhere feom mid June 1969 to early July 1969, and the book consists of 9 labeled tabs with 11 mostly two-sided heavy paper stock pages of data entry including DOI Data Card, Lunar Surface Align, Ascent Phasing and many more. Heavily used in training in the Lunar Module Simulator and several of the pages show loads of penciled in data entry either by Armstrong or Aldrin. Training books such as this were not commercially available and were made in very limited quantities. Rare. In addition to the Data Card book, this lot contains four Lunar Module cue cards - each with velcro on one side for attachment to the LM panels for quick reference. The cards all basically measure 8"x 10" in size and included are a LM Phasing Reference Trajectory and what looks like three different CSM/LM ingress and egress checklist and timeline cards. These cards are not dated but come with a letter from the consignor attesting to the fact that they were used for Apollo 11 training. Heavily used condition and rare. Estimated Value: $1500 - $2000

Early Apollo 12 Lunar Module TD+2 Star Chart

An 8-3/4" diameter Apollo 12 Lunar Module TD+2 HRS (Touchdown+2) star chart consisting of a black star disc below and a semi-transparent rotating disc above. The rings on the outer disc signify what stars would be seen through the Optical Telescope at certain times during the stay on the moon. Star charts like this were used on every lunar landing mission to orient the LM just prior to liftoff. This star chart is dated October 3, 1969 for a launch date of November 14, 1969 (the Apollo 12 actual launch date), and was to be used in case the Lunar Module had to leave the moon's surface within two hours after landing. Each Lunar Module carried two similar star charts - this one for an immediate liftoff, and another for liftoff after the stars had precessed across the sky during their stay on the moon. This star chart was used in the Lunar Module Simulator and was no doubt handled by Conrad and Bean during their training. Nice condition and extremely uncommon. Estimated Value: $300 - $400

It contains about 10-12 sections with about 30 heavy paper stock two-sided pages (60 total pages) of LM contingency checklists and procedures. Little or no annotations inside. Some of the tabbed sections are Docked DPS/APS, Loss of Comm, Staged and Unstaged Power Down List, Emergency Power Down, Contingency EVT/IVT and many more. This checklist was used by the Apollo 12 crew during training for the mission, and was the designated copy to be used in the Crew Quarters (A "Q" on the cover). This checklist details, in set procedures, what to do in all cases of an emergency in the Lunar Module. Two 8½"x 11" manuals "Telemetry And Flight Program Report - Luminary" Volumes I and II, prepared by NASA for the Apollo 13 mission, and they are dated 2 March 1970. They each consist of probably 50-60 pages with many tabbed sections. Volume I deals with Expanded Checklists, Nouns and Alarm Codes, and Volume II deals with E-Memory, Downlink Telemetry, Padloads, and SSR Displays. The purpose of these manual is to assist the AGC Staff Support personnel, who support the Guidance Officer, during the mission. Luminary was the name of the computer program run on the Lunar Module AGC (Apollo Guidance Computer). Volume one is discolored on the cover from age and its tabs are wirn from use, but is still in good shape inside. Volume II is nice shape all around, but does have some bent tabs from use. Additionally scores of craters and landmarks are shown along with and the PDI approach of the LM. The map is a first edition dated 1 March 1970, for an April 11 launch. The rings on the outer disc signify what stars would be seen through the Optical Telescope at certain times during the stay on the moon. Star charts like this were used on every lunar landing mission to orient the LM just prior to liftoff. The strange thing about this star chart is that it is dated for a launch on March 12, 1970, one month before the actual launch date. Maybe it was an early version used for training purposes. Charts like these were to be used in case the Lunar Module had to leave the moon's surface within two hours before liftoff from the lunar surface. Each Lunar Module carried two similar star charts - this one for an immediate liftoff, and another for liftoff after the stars had precessed across the sky during their stay on the moon. This star chart was used in the Lunar Module Simulator and was no doubt handled by Lovell and Haise during their training. Nice shape. Extremely uncommon. Estimated Value: $200 - $300

An original and rare Apollo 13 CSM Lunar Landmark Maps book. It consists of a total of 29 flexible plastic sheets of the lunar surface, and of those 29 sheets, 18 are two-sided and 11 one-sided for a total of 37 plastic lunar map sheets. There are many cool oblique lunar surface approach landmark photos, several landing site closeups, 3 long foldouts showing the LM approach to the landing site and 19 regular paper lunar surface sheets in the back. So there is a total of about 50-60 maps in the book. Additionally, there are 7 or 8 data sheets and heading sheets. This Lunar Landmarks Map book was the Master Copy and was the property of the head of the Flight Planning Branch in Houston. Many of the maps and foldouts are marked up red pen by Colton. There are about a dozen tabbed sections of procedures and LM switch positions for complete CSM to LM transfer and Lunar Module activation. Sections include IVT to LM (IVT = Inter-Vehicular Transfer), LMP IVT to LM, IVT to CSM, PDI Day (Powered Descent Initiation), Drogue & Probe, C/W Checkout, Landing Gear Deploy, Prep For Undock, and many more. A couple pages have hand annotations inside, and the checklist itself is curved as if someone carried it around for a time in their back pocket. There are many AGC program code sections including nouns and verbs, and other sections such as Start Charts, Checklist Codes Alarms, AGS Logic, AGS Man Thrust, etc. A bit spotted and dirty with age and use on the front cover and the tabs are well worn from astronaut training use. This Timeline book is heavily used and also heavily marked up on many of the pages. These Timelines were the books most extensively used during training by all the Apollo Lunar Module astronauts. The chart shows the sun and planets in color to differentiate them from the background, and important navigational stars are numbered, highlighted and oversized. The track of the Apollo 15 CSM across the star field is also shown in color. The lunar star chart reads at the bottom "CSM Lunar Orbit Star Chart, January 31, 1971 Launch" which was the launch date of Apollo 14. This Lunar Orbit Star Chart was used in training by the crew. There is a bend and slight crease from the bend in the middle from poor storage, but can possibly be made to vanish when it is flattened out under glass. No rips or tears. Subsections for the first include Prelaunch Closeout Check, SubsystemG&C Reference Modes, Thrust, Staging and more. This AOH manual is bound by a string and has some stains on the front page, but looks to still be in nice shape - ready to put into a binder. LM-8 was the Lunar Module used on the Apollo 14 mission and LM-9 is on display at KSC - it did not meet the upgrade requirements for the rover missions. Quite uncommon. Estimated Value: $750 - $1000

All look to be in excellent condition except for all of them have a minor bottom left corner issue. When separating them apart after years of storage, a small bit of paper from the back of the photo above in the stack, stuck to the gloss of the underneath photo. Richard Gordon's Apollo 15 LM Lunar Surface Maps

An original and vintage 8½"x 10½" Apollo 15 Lunar Module Lunar Surface Maps originally belonging to Apollo 15 backup commander Richard Gordon. The book consists of 17 one-sided Hadley Region area lunar terrain maps and 11 two-sided EVA traverse maps for a total of 39 map sides. All the maps in this book are made of a flexible plastic material - the traverse maps in quite heavy plastic, heavier than the others. The maps are montages of the lunar surface showing landmarks and craters around the Hadley region. The 11 traverse maps (22 sides) show detailed paths and planned stops for EVA-I, EVA-II and EVA-III around Hadley Rille. On the backs of many of the traverse maps there is a detailed list of tasks to be performed for each traverse segment shown on the map. The map book also contains a data sheet and two of the maps are closeups of the landing site. This map book was used for Apollo 15 crew training, and was the personal property of Gordon, whose name appears on the front cover (top right corner). The front cover has experienced a bit of fading with age, but the plastic maps are all in excellent condition. Complete with its front and back covers, and all the maps are contained with three metal rings. Not a commercial item, but used specifically for Apollo 15 lunar mission crew training. A complete group of eight launch-dated Apollo 15 CSM and LM star charts along with, and verified complete by, an Apollo 15 11"x 17" Basic Star Charts booklet showing each star chart to be carried onboard and used on the Apollo 15 mission. There are five 8"x 15" plastic rectangular star charts and three circular star charts. The rectangular star charts include CSM Lunar Orbit, CSM Translunar Coast, CSM Transearth Coast, LM Lunar Orbit and a Standard Apollo Star Chart. The circular charts are LM Pre-Liftoff and LM Post-Landing, along with a rare, two-sided Northern and Southern Hemisphere CSM PTC Star Chart. The three circular charts are in great condition. The five rectangular charts all exhibit a curve in the plastic from 40 years of poor storage, however, there are no bends or creases and would flattened out seamlessly under glass for instance. Each of these star charts is dated for a launch on July 26, 1971 (the actual launch date for Apollo 15) and were used in training for the Apollo 15 mission. Apollo 16 Lunar Module Post Landing Star Chart

An 8-1/4" diameter Apollo 16 Lunar Module Post-Landing star chart consisting of a black star disc below and a semi-transparent rotating disc above. The rings on the outer disc signify what stars would be seen through the Optical Telescope at certain times during the stay on the moon. Star charts like this were used on every lunar landing mission to orient the LM just prior to liftoff. The star chart is dated March 6, 1972 for a launch date of April 16, 1972 (the Apollo 16 actual launch date), and was to be used in case the Lunar Module had to leave the moon's surface immediately after landing. Each Lunar Module carried two similar star charts - this one for an immediate liftoff, and another for liftoff after the stars had precessed across the sky during their stay on the moon. This star chart was used in the Lunar Module Simulator and was no doubt handled by Young and Duke during their training. There is a slight bend line in the top plastic disc no doubt made there in order to more clearly see the disc underneath. Nice condition otherwise and extremely uncommon. There are many AGC program code sections including nouns and verbs, and other sections such as Stars, Verbs, Nouns, Pre-Thrust, Opt & Alarm Codes, DEDA Addresses, Contingency Alignment, etc. This particular manual contains little or no annotations inside and is in excellent condition. An original and vintage 8½"x 10½" Apollo 16 Lunar Module Lunar Surface Maps book consisting of 15 one-sided Descartes Region area lunar terrain maps, including three closeups of the landing site, and 16 page-sides of traverse maps for a total of 31 map sides. All the maps in this book are made of a flexible plastic material - the traverse maps are made from quite heavy plastic, heavier than the others. The maps are montages of the lunar surface showing landmarks and craters around the Descartes region. The 16 traverse maps show detailed paths and planned stops for EVA-I, EVA-II and EVA-III around the landing site. On the backs of some of the traverse maps there is a detailed list of tasks to be performed for each traverse segment shown on the map. The map book also contains a data sheet. This map book was used for Apollo 16 crew training. The front cover is marked in places, but the plastic maps are all in excellent condition. Complete with its front and back covers, and all the maps are contained with three metal rings. Not a commercial item, but used specifically for Apollo 16 lunar mission crew training. There is also a Alarm Code Summary foldout. The majority of the cards are dated 9-14-71, while the rest are dated anywhere from 9-30-71 to 11-20-71. Five of the cards bear "Apollo 15 Data" in italics, meaning this card for Apollo 16 was updated with data received from the Apollo 15 mission. Many of the cue cards have velcro attached to the back for the astronauts to attach to the LM panels for easy reference. Probably a complete set, and maybe the only one in existence. A 12" long wind direction device used at the launch pad during the last Saturn V launch. There were 3 wind direction devices used, and this particular one was installed at the very highest level at the 380 ft mark on the tower. This is what is left of the device once the Saturn V passed during the launch. Complete with the paperwork explaining the above, a Skylab decal, a Skylab 1 cover and a Skylab launch access badge. Space Shuttle Solenoid Valve With NASA Paperwork

A Space Shuttle solenoid valve manufactured in 1976-77 and removed from service, according to the paperwork, in November 1991. It is not clear if this valve was ever flown, but it was removed from inventory because of audible venting when being tested. In fact, all the ports are sealed as if straight from the factory. The solenoid valve is 5" long and 2" diameter and weighs almost 1 pound. The paperwork includes 5 sheets of NASA documentation, a green Unserviceable Tag and a red removal tag. Excellent condition.
