Auction featuring many fine examples of edged weapons, armour including many helmets and Japanese suit parts, ethnographic pieces featuring pre-Columbian, Filipino and Africa lots, a wide selection of jewelry, fossils and minerals as well as other assorted collectables.

Lot #1 (Sale Order 1 of 324)

Important and well provenanced cross of the Cloister Marienthal, Saxony circa 1750. Beautifully decorated and carved in wood with polychrome painted sunburst rays and an interior under glass. Heavily gilded and painted in white with elegant floral patterns in the German fashion. The interior of the cross under its original curio glass with a complex series of jeweled pierced filigree over a lace background. The cross features inscription in Latin on paper reading (Romani, Celsi, Magn, mansuet, aucundini, candida, adriani, urbani) or roughly (The noble Roman, the great man, of the great Aucundini, of the city of Hadrian). The base with a curio window for a reliquary and hinged tray accessible from the rear.

A post envelope circa 1950 and included documents. An included letter translated to English later details information from circa 1951 including quotes the Cross as being the collection of (Frau Gisela Heink, from Riesa, on the River Elbe in Saxony, East-Germany). The letter further states and translates the cross as per a chronicle from the Cloister Marienthal located in Saxony-Lausitz, Germany as being made circa 1750. At the time and currently the cloister belongs to the Catholic nun's order of the Listerrienser. When the nuns had to escape temporarily during the Napoleonic wars around 1800, the Cloister's secretary was likely given the cross. The secretary August Felix Heink a brother of Margaretha Williamson's great grandfather. The cross has remained in the family collection until 2024.

Kloster St. Marienthal is the oldest nunnery of the Cistercian Order of Germany to maintained unbroken occupation of its house since foundation, circa 1234. Size: 17 1/2" H x 8 1/4" W. Condition: Good with some wear commensurate to age and use. Looseness to sunburst rays. Loss to some polychrome paint.. Provenance: Cloister Marienthal circa 1750-1800, Ex-August Felix Heink, and the family by descent 1800-1950, Margaretha Williamson 1950, Hix Family by descent. (Same Family from 1800-2024). George Fellows 1920-2000, purchased at earlier European Art Fairs

Beautifully detailed antique Chinese cloisonne pot with cloisonne birds to each side of the shoulder. Baby blue background with periwinkle framing allow for bright yellow, green and red details to shine. Four panels depicting a variety of scenes including a vase full of blooming flowers, birds by a bonsai tree and more. Birds on the shoulders are black with a navy blue feather tip. An absolute lovely example of craftmanship at its finest. Size 14" H x 18" W. Condition: Good condition throughout.

Spanish 'Carabinieri of the Kingdom' Sword w/Scabbard

Fine Spanish officers sword of the 'Carabinieri of the Kingdom'. Handle in gilded brass with the coat of arms for Spain absent the fleur de Lis to the center. Probably circa late 1860s or the Regency of General Espartero. The guard with an octagonal panel reading (CDR) meaning (Carabineros del Reino) and decorative quillion matching in design to the remainder. Good leather scabbard with brass matching mounts and the top mount featuring the coat of arms for Spain that was used to attach to a Baldric. Size 38 1/8" L, blade 30 3/4" L. Condition: very good with some leather to the reverse of the scabbard for stabilization. Leather loose and detached from guard. Provenance: ex-Los Angeles collection, ex-Spanish collection

Iberian Peninsula, Spain, famous Navaja folding knife in typical fashion with a decorated red inset blade that has a single edge and sharp terminating point for multiple uses. The beautiful handle in bright brass with incised patterns and turned finial, the steel core with a mechanism to fold the knife back into the handle. Size 17" L, blade 7 3/4" L

Navaja knives have a historical association with piracy, particularly during the Golden Age of Piracy in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Pirates, who roamed the seas in search of treasure and plunder, often carried a variety of weapons, including knives, for self-defense, utility, and intimidation. Navaja knives with brass handles were well-suited for maritime life and could serve a variety of purposes aboard a pirate ship.

Particularly suitable for infantry as most were familiar with the tool as a farm implement and then later as a weapon in battle. Indian elephant combination-dagger, known as ankus or Indian elephant goad from South India, 19th century. Carried by a elephant driver (Mahout), the pointed tip and dual elephant trunk shaped protrusion to the face is double edged and inlaid in silver decoration. The shaft has a series of iron rings and at the base features a pommel in brass. Carved brass pommel is in the shape of a lion head with a smaller lion protruding in pierced carving. The pommel can be unscrewed from the shaft revealing a stiletto like four sided blade for puncturing. Size overall 18 7/8" L, blade 6 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W. Condition: Very good with detail remaining to the inlay throughout under original patina.

Indonesia, Dayak Peoples Mandau headhunters sword with scabbard. Ornate well carved antler bone handle with fine detailing of a humanoid figure riding or being consumed by a zoomorphic beast. Handle with a natural resin pastiche section. Double-edged blade well formed and engraved with scrolling patterns from the ricasso and upper section to the tip, highlighted in white pigment. The blade scabbard is beautifully done with light and dark rattan wrapping, bone carved section matching handle, and relief carved sections of demons and humanoid figures. Known for their long standing tradition of taking heads and souvenirs like scalps or body parts the Headhunters have now been outlawed and Dayak peoples mostly used the sword as a working weapon such as a machete. The uppermost haft of the blade and ricasso heavily inlaid in silver scrolling and a long series of brass inlaid circles (some absent). Scabbard in wood and carved bone covered with tightly wrapped rattan and attached to a rawhide leather with cover and belt in rattan. Fine target rifle with beautifully carved stock and octagonal barrel, the ramrod is original and the rifle has roughly a .25" bore. This target rifle was reputedly owned Christian Castenskiold a member of the royal family of Denmark and kin to the King of Denmark. Christian born 1926 into the royal family a cousin of Queen Margrethe. His mother Royal Highness Princess Dagmar Castenskiold and his father Jorgen Castenskiold titled Master of the Royal Hunt. 1949 Christian became the only member of the Royal family to do so immigrated to the US. Shortly after Christian was married and then drafted to the United States Army where he served just before the Korean war, previous he served in the Royal Danish Guard as an Officer. Barrel 21" L, overall 36" L

The top mark a double headed eagle reading (II K) underneath. Seral Number (41XXX), dated 1888 to the stock with an impressed mark and the action mechanism. Size 42" L, barrel 20 1/2" L

Cossacks, as a prominent military and cultural group in Russia, used the Berdan II rifle extensively. The rifle saw action in various conflicts, including the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), and World War I (1914–1918)

Philippines Archipelago, 19th century or earlier. Comprised of a brass links in several sizes, thick brass plates, iron, and buffalo horn to the interior of the forward chest plates. This heavy and high quality armour has seen minimal restoration and repair with many of the original links remaining. The plates of heavy brass are riveted together throughout with even the lower links that come to a series of upside down triangular peaks are almost all intact. Links are butt end and the larger heavy links affix to the plates while series of smaller links affix to each of the large forming a tightly woven pattern. Size 31 1/4" H x 29 " W, weighs 20lbs & 12.4 ounces

For a similar armour see Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology (OBJECT NUMBER 40-39-70/1523). Condition: Some replaced or missing rivets, cracks to horn interior liner plates, dings and damage from use commensurate with age and condition. Known as a precursor to the classic period Acoma manta. Close to half the size of a manta similar to an Acoma piece woven 800 years later with brocaded or embroidered end bands in vegetal colors, just like the Puebloans wove using indigo and cochineal in the middle of the 19th century. West Africa, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, Akan Cultures, Asante peoples mid to early 20th century. Beautifully cast traditional ring with a protrusion to one side and raised details. For additional information on Asante gold Finger rings and similar examples see (Gold of the Akan from the Glassell Collection, pg. 168-185). Acid tested with partial dissolution 18k indicating likely consistent 18k gold content. US ring (size 8.5). Total weight 21 grams. Size 1 3/8" W. Condition: very good with some visible casting flaws and file marks from the original craftsman. Provenance: Family collection of an esteemed diplomat and ambassador amassed during travel and work circa 1960-1990s in the medical field providing charitable advanced medical care throughout the African continent and internationally.
