TAKING A GLIMPSE THROUGH THE WINDOW of a LOVELY FAMILY
When Muscarelli begins an auction, two or three of us travel to the site and begin putting together things that are similar – a group of glassware, a group of pink glassware, a group of odd chairs, etc. (we call this lotting up), then a team of two with computer in-hand move in for multiple days to create the catalogue or describe the items, followed by photographers to take pictures of the lots! The process is sometimes tedious and sometimes overwhelming, but the job eventually gets done. As one spends time in a residence where people used to live and thrive and enjoy celebrating life, one begins to see or envision those who used to reside there. Quickly there are clues that pop up that assist greatly with solving the mystery about these folks, but sometimes heart aches and pains that you wish you had not discovered remain. This particular sale has been a rare joy! The Stories lived near Lenoir for a number of years (probably most of their lives) and this sale is a composite of who they were and how they lived.
Mr. Storie was a woodworker. His shop was neatly arranged with electric tools of all descriptions – saws, bandsaws, table saw, roller stand, scroll saw, jig saws, planer, router, drill press, circular saws, miter saws, drills and so much more. Add a complement of hand tools, like screwdrivers, chisels, hammers of all shapes and sizes, pliers and a huge variety of useful tools in the right hands! There are neatly grouped boxes of nails, screws, squares, fasteners and other implements that might be needed for the next project. There are patterns for some of the whimsical items that he made for friends and family, complete with paints and brushes to give them personality and finished appearance. The craftsman had fans for cooling the air, air compressors, air tanks and other items to make the work more pleasurable and fun. This workshop is fully equipped and in good clean condition, a little sawdust never hurt anything! He left behind a few things that he had made – work benches for making the tasks easier, some walking sticks, a nice hinged lid box, and other keepsakes that his close friends and family could treasure.
This gentleman enjoyed a variety of activities. He was a golfer, a fisherman, an outdoors man, a grill master and a person who cherished his past. He split his own wood (and probably some for others less fortunate), mowed his own grass and had an amazing tractor for keeping the snow removed from the steep drive for himself and his neighbors. There are items that he kept because they brought fond memories – Coca-Cola items, enameled ware, apple boxes, orchard baskets, iron wheels, clocks and many other vintage and antique “treasures.” He apparently was handy and enjoyed lawn care because there are lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers and tools of all descriptions, sprayers, pesticides and chemicals to rid the lawn of varmints!
Mrs. Storie was committed to her task as a homemaker, and she appears to have been very successful in her endeavors. She amassed an assortment of electric appliances to help make her household tasks both easier and more productive. Vacuums, air fryers, electric fry pans, crock pots, warmers and many more electric gadgets. She had the normal baking dishes, silverware, China and tools for making a house into a home. She enjoyed canning and quilting and there are items which are being shared from her handiwork. She loved beauty and her decorating flair featured many religious items and statements about her (their) faith. The household furniture reflects her belief that “cleanliness is next to Godliness” and everything was clean and polished. She loved gardening and numerous planters were once vibrant with bold colors. There is a cute hard plastic plant station where many a pot was planted and encouraged to grow. She enjoyed the holidays, as can be seen through boxes and boxes of holiday decorations that she had used to “deck the halls” and make the holidays more enjoyable for her family and friends.
As a couple, the Stories enjoyed their church and their home reflected their commitment to the church, its teachings and their ministry into the community. This was not a family that valued lots of things, but they purchased quality items and cared for them so that they would last. They loved God’s creatures as reflected in the numerous birdfeeders and houses, both in the storage area and outside. Whirly gigs dotted the landscape for additional interest. Their commitment to family was apparent as they had kept items from their children’s childhood, games and toys for the grandchildren to enjoy and opportunities to spend time together as a family.
What a treasure trove of memories were left behind. As a cataloguer, this was truly a joy to take a “peek in a window” to gather a glimpse of happiness as it existed on top of the mountain!

This pick up will be in Lenoir, North Carolina.)
