Plain and decorated stone balls were not gaming pieces but ceremonial orbs. They are rarely damaged indicating gentle handling. Gaming balls were made from the latex-like sap of rubber trees. TAINO PRECOLUMBIAN MALE "MIDGET" SCEPTER Lot #1153 (Sale Order 150 of 418) Taino PreColumbian. Important scepter with male Midget depicted as a bird man or shaman. Midgets are noted by short arms and compact anatomy in Taino art . See Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State” pgs 31-34 (Roberts 2023). Shamans, hunchbacks and other nonconventional types often became shamans as it was believed they saw the spiritual world differently and thus were chosen by the gods as spiritual leaders. The underside of the beak and joints at elbows are pierced. When inverted the feet join with the incised band to create a spirit face. On reverse the cupped sections on the shoulder and butt join with the vertebral column to create 2 separate bird heads. The vertical line running down the length of the staff is a natural inclusion in the stone. Marble. Length 17” Taino Culture c600-1500AD. TAINO PRECOLUMBIAN BIRD MAN SPADE LIKE FORM Lot #1155 (Sale Order 152 of 418) Taino. PreColumbian. Bird-man on a spade-like form. A fully formed shaman or bird-man can be identified by the avian head and long human like legs. The eyes and nose has been drilled through to connect. Suspension holes on either side of form indicate it was hung, likely in a caciques lodge or caney. A band of interlocking bird heads is incised on the front and back of the form.
