The Life of Thomas L. Booth Artist October 7, 1933 – April 5, 2024 Thomas L. Booth was born in Pulaski, TN, and took many paths in becoming an exceptional artist. Booth received his early education in Pulaski and graduated from Giles County High School in 1951. He then attended college for 2 years at Middle Tennessee State (now Middle Tennessee State University) through 1953. From there, Booth spent 4 years in Chicago, Illinois, studying at the School of Art Institute of Chicago and graduating with a BFA degree in Advertising Design in 1957. Booth’s job experiences were remarkable. From 1957 through 1959, he was the exhibit designer for the Museum of Atomic Energy in Oak Ridge, TN. From 1959 – 1961, Booth was employed by the Department of Commerce, Washington, D.C. as an Industrial Design Draftsman designing plans for two United States Trade Fairs held in Osaka, Japan and Zagreb, Yugoslavia. From 1962 – 1973, Booth opened Booth Studio on Canal St., New York, New York to pursue his real passion of fine art plus free lance advertising. In his own words, “Having my own studio loft in downtown Manhattan, I was self-employed in various free lance art projects including exhibit designs”. In 1971, he designed a portable planisphere for educational training in astronomy. This was a basic tool for learning the major constellations and their stars in the Northern Hemisphere. Much later, this endeavor proved to become the stepping stone for a much larger creation. After 1973, Booth zigzagged across the country to immerse himself in art, first in Oregon, then in Virginia, where he had designed the internally illuminated planisphere for the Bays Mountain Nature Center. This became the catalyst for the development of his new board game in 1989, using the Stelescope concept producing “Constellation Station”, which identifies 1,020 stars in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres. With travel and adventure behind him, Thomas and his wife Joan, decided to return home to Pulaski, TN, and focus on fine art. Upon his return, Booth was quiet about his exceptional art expertise and portfolio. He created his own studio and substantial library for the pure enjoyment of study and painting. His magnificent mind enhanced by exceptional art abilities are evident through his fine art and research.
