Barrel has turned plumwith receiver retaining mottled silver case color with light surface erosion in a few spots. Forend wood has several large dings and scratches with 3 1/2" crack fight top side, buttstock appears to be a carbine style replacement with saddle ringhardware hole filled with wood and a screw. Carbine style buttplate very good with mottled case color visible. Top of receiver tang beneath Vernier sight is broken and second digit in serial number has been drilled through and isunreadable. Keith Cochrans book "Colt Peace maker Encyclopedia Volume 1, states "Depot 14 Pall Mall London" was added to barrel address in 1876 after Colt received permission from the British Customs Agent. He further states Peacemaker no. 29940 does not have this address while Peacemaker 33899 does. Revolver shows good condition with all matching serial numbers including barrel, cylinder has British proof marks rear circumference, left side frame show 2 line patent marks, trigger guard stamped 45 cal. B. Barrel retains a gray to plum patina with areas of blue at breech end, ejector housing with blue in recessed area. Frame has visible mottled case hardening, cylinder with blue in flutes, trigger guard and backstrap also shoiwng an even silvery gray with blue behind trigger. Walnut grips are good with small flattened area of loss on right, toe with light wear or rounding. originally from Black Hills Mining town of Pactola, SD. Town of Pactola was founded 1870's after gold discovery in Black Hills but flooded out ending up under water of Pactola Reservoir by 1956. Collection of items was saved by then Custer resident Carl Wiehe who owned and operated the Frontier Museum where it was displayed for many years. The Frontier Museum was a family ran Museum originally located at Custer State Park and in the 1950's moved to town of Custer SD. and featured a write up in 1956 by the National Geographic Magazine. After closing in the 1960's the items went into storage but include everything as was displayed in the museum which includes the original cage door, gold scales with weights, smelting spoon, carbide lamp, miners candle stick, Ways Bocket Smelter kit, ingot molds, early gold pan, mortars and pestles, early photos of a mine speculator (original early family member of the Wiehe family) 1893 hard bound Interstate Corporation record book for Harvest Mining Co. incorporated in Pactola SD in 1903 which was also used as the guest register for the museum, Charles Parker assay bag, old Pactola addressed letters, ore samples and three specimen vials of Black Hills gold the first weighing 4.3 grams, the second 6.7 grams and the third panned from French Creek weighting 25.1 grams, all three tested and guaranteed as gold.
