This large, ambitious composition was based on a painting Rembrandt made for Frederick Hendrik, the Prince of Orange, who, as stadholder was the highest-ranking elected official in the country. It directly challenged Rubens by showing the removal of Christ from the cross as a dismal, physical event rather than a glorious baroque cascade. Even in such a serious production, Rembrandt's idiosyncratic humor comes through, for he assigned himself a cameo role, clutching Christ's arm and glaring outward.  - Lot - REMBRANDT "DESCENT FROM THE CROSS" ETCHING BY ARMAND DURAND

 

The Descent from the Cross, dated 1633, is an etching from a series highlighting classic religious scenes, titled The Passion of Christ, commissioned by the secretary of the Prince of Orange, Constantijin Huygens. The Descent from the Cross illustrates a group of men taking Christ down from the cross after his crucifixion. It is believed that Rembrandt produced his iteration of this iconic scene in response to Peter Paul Rubens painting of the same scene from 161214.

In contrast to Rubens iteration, Rembrandt allows this piece to be more responsive. He creates a genuine sense of suffering through the detailed expression on all of the figures visages causing viewers to feel a compelling involvement. From Christs pained expression to the way in which his body twists rather unsettlingly, this scene shies away from an often-idealized depiction. While the men pull Christ off the cross they bring forward a sense of weight as they cling onto his lifeless form. Rembrandt also uses complex lighting to enforce the importance of the occurring scene; rays of light shine down onto the central figures casting bystanders into the shadows and creating a hierarchy of importance.

Her work is characterized by a unique blend of realism and the surreal; she is known for still lives featuring animals interacting with manmade objects in unexpected, fantastical ways.

Early in 1884, Claude Monet traveled to Bordighera, a town on the Italian Riviera, close to the border between Italy and France, for a working visit of three weeks that turned into nearly three months. In a letter to the sculptor Auguste Rodin describing his efforts to translate into paint the brilliant Mediterranean light, Monet declared he was "fencing, wrestling, with the sun."

Although he was entranced by the light and by the unfamiliar plants and trees in the south, Monet had difficulty in finding motifs. At Bordighera it seemed that everything was overgrown and he was tormented by the suspicion that he was in the wrong place. Often under these circumstances Monet would make conventional picturesque views as if to prepare himself for future exertions. In Bordighera, 1884, the windswept lines of the pine trees make a frame for the distant town in a painting that takes us back to sentimental souvenirs of the Grand Tour.

About David Kramer

Inspired by the glossy spreads of vintage magazines and pornography, David Kramer's paintings frequently feature shiny cars and gorgeous women looking longingly into the lens. Alternately humorous and reflective, text plays a crucial role in his paintings: sometimes standing alone, sometimes surrounding accompanying images. "They always kind of seemed like they were images of adulthood," says Kramer, "What life was going to be like soon. What I really wanted..."
