DETAILED BROADSIDE 138 AFRICAN SLAVE AUCTION SALE Lot #5047 (Sale Order 47 of 248) Broadside listing 138 African American slaves for sale or probable auction. Reads "Descriptive List of 138 Negroes Accustomed to the Culture of Rice These Negroes will be sold deliverable at Savannah, from the 15th to the 20th of January, 186. For particulars, enquire of J. Bryan Johnson Square, Savannah, Georgia." The document then proceeds to list these individuals, ordering them by number, name, age, 'field rate,' and remarks. The remarks are rather interesting, providing different details about the individuals described. Examples include "Sophy Adams Very prime and large - mother of fine family," "Diana Complaining, but looks well," "Amos Very inferior boy," and "Mina Prime woman - about to be confined." Individuals on the list are divided into family units, marked by empty space. Paper is disconnecting at seams, but is supported by rice paper and is currently preserved inside a riker frame. Browning on one side where it was recovered from a scrap book. Paper demonstrates evidence of having been placed inside a frame for a long time due to discoloration along border. Overall, the item is in very good, original condition. This lot has a reserve.

US ANDREW JACKSON WRITTEN & SIGNED COURT DOCUMENT Lot #5048 (Sale Order 48 of 248) Court document containing a legal decision involving sheriff Andrew Nelson. Dated to 1801, when Andrew Jackson was serving on the Tennessee Superior Court. Back of document has a legal paragraph written by Andrew Jackson and then signed. Handwriting present on back matches known examples of Jackson's writing, and the signature does as well. The document is written in ferrous ink on period appropriate paper. Top of document has been cut, likely for display, in a wave like pattern. 7.75 X 12.5 inches. Deemed authentic according to terms. Very good, original condition.

BRITISH P1856 & P1858 YATAGHAN SWORD BAYONET PAIR Lot #5178 (Sale Order 177 of 248) Lot of TWO (2) British yataghan sword bayonets, patterns 1856 & 1858, with leather scabbards. Both have 23-inch fullered steel blades and two-piece checkered leather grips. The P1856 blade is marked with a WD approval and the knights' head of Kirschbaum, Solingen, and the P1858 blade with "A & E. H" of A. & E. Holler, London. The Kirschbaum bayonet is engraved "52.B.B" on the cross guard and "L G.A 41" on the scabbard frog stud. Various proof and inspection marks throughout. Good condition. Scattered pitting, oxidation. Locking bolt springs are functional.

EARLY EDO JAPANESE ANCESTRAL SWORD IN GUNTO MOUNT Lot #5179 (Sale Order 178 of 248) 17th century Japanese wakizashi with Shirasaya (protective storage scabbard). The blade has a midare hamon (scattered edge pattern). The blade is 19 inches and the tang is 5.75 inches, for a combined length of 24.75 inches. This classifies the sword as a wakizashi, indicating that this was likely designed for indoor or one-handed use. The blade is 1.2 pounds. Mei (artist signature) on tang translates to 'Minamoto Moritsugu, resident of Hizen province on an auspicious day of the second month of Kan'ei 20 (1643 CE).' Minamoto Moritsugu was a smith of the Kongo Hyoue forge. which was associated with the Kamado Shrine and produced katana and other weapons for militant Buddhist factions. The tang is in the 'Sotoba' shape, innovated by the Kongo Hyoue, but was likely cut at some point. The tang has two mekugi-ana (holes where the hilt is attached), consistent with the blade being modified at a later point to fit a more modern tsuka (hilt), likely the Second World War. The tsuka is also consistent with those produced during World War 2, with 20th century cloth wrapping and shark skin, in the Shingunto model. The tsuka is 11 inches. The tsuba (guard) is cast iron with gilt gold flower design, also consistent with WWII. The blade shows some evidence of use, with two miniscule notches in the cutting edge of the blade. There is some patination and rusting, consistent with use. Overall, the blade could be classified as 'tired. The blade is relatively short compared to the tsuka, which was designed for a longer Otherwise, the blade is in very good, original condition. This lot has a reserve.

US CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE OFFICERS SABER HAIMAN Lot #5183 (Sale Order 182 of 248) Civil War unmarked Confederate cavalry saber, produced by L. Haiman of Columbus, GA. Bearing resemblance to the US M1860 with 35 inch curved blade with unstopped fuller. Often mistaken for unattributed "Dog River" Confederate swords due to lack of markings, this sword features the distinctive blade flaw and pommel, as well as the wide solder seams and thick brass ring mounts on the scabbard, all of which have come to be known as characteristic to the Haiman swords. Both sword and scabbard have an aged dark brown patina, and blade shows small aged nicks, likely from period service. Hilt fittings are slightly loose from age, and wire wrapped grip retains almost all of original leather. 37 inch blade. Overall, very good example. In very good, original condition.

This sword was originally sold in 2011 with materials relating to its previous owner, Ollie Murphy, Confederate soldier and Southern Cross of Honor winner.
