Book is bound in paper boards with black leather spine, interior front cover has label from the library, front and back empty pages has writing from the donator of book William T. Rowland, interior is intact with some page toning from age. This is an early American published law book that was for use by the general public who may have never studied law.

Civil War Era Scrape Album belonging To General J. C. Winsmith Of Spartanburg South Carolina Lot #43 (Sale Order 43 of 125) John Christopher Winsmith was the son of Dr. John Winsmith, they were wealthy land and slave owners in Spartanburg Co. S.C. Dr. Winsmith was a prominent physician and state legislator, J.C. Winsmith attended the Citadel in Charleston SC, in 1859 J. C. obtained his law degree from Charleston College, he first was enlisted as a Liet. in Company G of the fifth S. C. Vol. Infantry, in May of 1862 he became a Capt. with Company H of the first South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, Winsmith was wounded twice, he was a fervent supporter of the confederate cause. After the war he joined the republican party and began supporting their platform in the south, Black rights, which caused him backlash from the Ku Klux Klan who attempted to assonate him in 1870. The scrape album offered in this lot belonged to J. C. Winsmith, on front fly leaf of album it is signed by him with later added provenance written along the top of this page spelling out its chain of ownership. The scrape album contains newspaper articles beginning in the 1850's and running to the mid 1870's, it illustrates the interest J. C. Winsmith had during these years. Album is found in fair condition, bound in paper covered boards with leather spine, top cover and the first 10 pages detached from spine, some of the pages have darkened from the use of the glue. Pages have chipping along its edges but most content is in good readable condition. Truely a piece of South Carolina history coming from one of SC's more prominent citizens.

John Shimpock was an early settler to Mount Pleasant NC in Eastern Cabarrus County. Around 1860 Shimpock was one of the wealthiest men in Eastern Cabarrus County, he was a state legislator, slave and land owner, he operated a country store in the 1840s and 50's. Complete book title is "Abstract of Infantry Tactics Including Exercises and Maneuvers of Light Infantry and Riflemen; for The Use of the Military of The United States, published by the War Department in Boston Hilliard, Gray, Little and Wilkens. Important Lot Of 3 Civil War Era Carte-de-Visites By Renowned Black Photographer James Presley Ball Lot #50 (Sale Order 50 of 125) Ball was born in Frederick County Virginia, he was a freeman of color, in 1849 he settled in Cincinnati Ohio an opened a photography gallery. Around 1855 ball opened with his brother in law, Alexander Thomas (Ball & Thomas Gallery). James P. Ball is considered one of the early Black photographers of the day, his images are highly desirable and command strong prices at auction. This fine lot contains a image of a man with J. P. Ball backstamp at address No. 30 West 4th Street between Main & Walnut Streets, Cincinnati, Ohio, Second photograph is a bust portrait of a man, on back is a 3 cent Washington revenue stamp and name Ball & Thomas Art gallery at 120 W. 4th Street, Cin'ti, last image is of a standing carte-de visite of a Civil War soldier holding his hat in full uniform, it is impressed with J. Lot Of 4 Manuscript Sermons Given During The Years Of 1861-1867 By Lutheran Pastor J. D. Shirey Lot #51 (Sale Order 51 of 125) First sermon is titled "The Enormity Of War" it was given in Aug. 1861 at Mt Tabor Lutheran Church near Staunton Virginia, 32 pages, Sermon discusses the effects of war on mankind and the church. Second Sermon given at the funeral of a confederate soldier, he talks on the bravery of soldier, how his death was one of the first in the community (Mt. Tabor, Va.), sermon is undated but assumed to be early in the war. Third sermon relates to funerals held during the years 1862-1867, also sermon was delivered in 1863 to negro congregation at Mt. Tabor, and lastly sermon given to negros Mt. Tabor 1864. All are hand written, very readable, very rare find. Rev. J. D. Shirey was born in 1836, he attended Roanoke College and was ordained a minister at Gettysburg Sem. in 1860. From 1861-1867 he served at Mt. Tabor near Staunton, Virginia, then in 1867-70 he was a minister at Floyd Co. Va. where he went on to Beth Eden Parrish in Newberry SC from 1870-1882. He then moved to North Carolina and became the minister at Grace & St. Luke-Salem churches from 1882-1889. In 1889 he became president of North Carolina College at Mt. Pleasant until his death in 1896. This is one of many lots by this southern preacher we will be offering in this catalog.

Over 30 Civil War Era Sermons By Rev. J. D. Shirey Lot #57 (Sale Order 57 of 125) Rev. Shirey was a Lutheran minister, he began his service at Mt Tabor Lutheran church in 1861. This lot of sermons were initially given during the years of the Civil War, the Southern branch of the Lutheran church was supportive of the Confederate cause. Rev. Shirey kept impeccable records of where he preached his sermons by making notes giving location, date of the deliverance of his sermons, he noted if they were for funerals and negro congregation. This lot contains 44 sermons. All are hand written and very readable, this lot gives us insight to the message that was delivered during the war and after. The Civil War Era Farm Account Book Of Paul Miller Of Cabarrus County North Carolina Lot #91 (Sale Order 91 of 125) Account book belonging to Paul Miller Of Cabarrus County NC has entries dating from 1861-69, book has accounts for Casewell Smith for bushels of corn, coffee, half gallon brandy, for labor, other accounts for Mathias Petre, Daniel Blackwelder, John A. Bost, Henry Shimpock and others. Account book mentions killing of pork for 1865, interest on debt, for hire of William Pitts 2 negros. Book also comes with 2 unused 1863-64 10 cent Confederate States, Jefferson Davis, greenish blue stamp with gum on back, stamps were stored in back of account book, stamps are in very good condition with good margins, one corner is turned on one stamp. Book is bound in marbleized paper boards with cloth spine, covers have edge wear and are beginning to split from spine-still tight. Interior is clean with some page toning and soiling. The miller family owned a farm near Mt. Pleasant NC, Paul's father George who died in 1836 mentions in his will the division of real estate left to Paul. Farm accounts like this are scarce, nice to find one in this condition.
